  • My 10 YO daughter wanted to use a reel mower but my Scott's Classic is too big...so I found a smaller one fairly cheap and give it a quick clean and adjust before sending it out into mowing service. Most attention paid to using light oil on the bearings and making sure the blade is adjusted correctly to the reels.
This is a fairly low end machine, 13.5" wide and only 4 reels.

My problem is when i adjust it and get it just to the point where it cuts paper than its stops spinning because its too tight, so im at a loss
Also the cheap plastic roller and bracket for height adjustment broke so im just using it without it which probably isn't good for it

Sounds like it needs to be sharpened. That restores the surfaces that rub, you back them off a bit and that’s how they cut. If those surfaces aren’t just right, you get what you have.

@@Turbo231 yeah I think you were right, I filed it and it's seemed to cut much better, that was my issue

Also, I'm not all that experienced with these but I believe you're pushing it a bit fast.

There is no speed limit to mowers as the ratio of wheel spin to reel spin is the same. What you get is momentum.

@@Turbo231 I've noticed at too high a speed the mower can skip a bit over rough and uneven patches of the lawn, so in my own use there's a sweet spot!

Think you need the just use grinding compound to even out the blade and sharpen it

Mostly the evening out part...and to cut a new edge, but a good alignment will get most people where they need to be, especially on blade contact mowers.

Wish you would have slowed down so we could actually see how and with what you clean blades with

WD-40 works well for cleaning…a rag or paper towel works.

    why can't u use WD40 as a lubricant?

Lots of people don’t think it’s a good lubricant. I haven’t had an issue with it.

Did you end up correcting center of blade?

It’s all close enough it cuts grass just fine. Paper is the gold standard.

There are a few on my channel. Look at the 20” Scotts Classic.

Great video! This is actually a decent little mower.
I bought this exact one from Lowe’s yesterday. Someone returned it and they marked it for $25
I’ve never had a reel mower I figured For that price why the heck not. Lol
