The amp sounds great but what an amazing player this gentleman is!
Peavey does an excellent job of emulating a tube-like tone in their solid-state models. They just don't get enough credit because a lot of players are pretentious followers who don't think for themself. Two things separate the professional player from the poseur: skill and the ability to think for oneself, and both come from experience. I played in the metal scene in L.A. in the 1980s, and while I owned a Marshall stack, a Boogie, and several other fine tube amps, I found I got the best tone using a series of Randall, Peavey and Crate solid states. I used a Gallien Krueger once for a gig and it sounded amazing. And that was almost forty years ago. If any player today, in 2022, still thinks they have to have tubes or nothing, then they are living in a fantasy. Some of the best players of all time have even moved away from amps. John McLaughlin hasn't used a traditional amp in almost twenty years. He's touring using an HX-Stomp into the soundboard. Mark Knopfler, another player known for excellent tone, has been seen using a Fractal system at recent gigs. That's all solid state. If solid state is good enough for these players, why isn't it good enough for everyone? My next amp will probably be a Gamma 50 watt which is analogue solid state and about $200.
Вы не пробовали Randall V2XM 30 vatt?
This was my first amp 20 years ago paired with a Peavey Raptor guitar. Saved up all my mowing money from a summer to buy them. Good times with both, still have & play both
Jesus Dave. That intro was so beautiful I forgot I was even watching an amp demo. Let alone one like that peavey! You inspire me to pick my guitar up, and to also not get so down about not having money for bigger better things, truly in the player
Bought one myself and absolutely blew me away. I love playing through it and currently it's been my go-to amp for around the house. Love when you play through Peaveys and was very happy to see this pop up on youtube!! I paid $20 for mine as well :)
Next time John Frusciante quits the RHCP, there will be no reason to hold auditions or start an exhausting search for their next guitarist. This is the man for the job. When he was playing around the 17 minute mark of this video, I could have closed my eyes and thought that I was listening to a Frusciante-Flea jam from a RHCP concert. Frig. It isn't only the stratty tone...it is the note choice....the phrasing....the bends...the everything. This dude is freaking insane.. Mr. Simpson, I salute you.
You sir, are a sage to us bedroom guitar heros! Peavey makes (made) fantastic stuff. Rock n roll, Dave!
Dave, I've got to confess something. Lately I've been watching your content and I'm amazed. You're a genius hidden in a humble guy. As per the review, as everything else you do, it's amazing. Cheers from Serbia!
That is a beautiful soul soothing tune dude 😌👍
I also have a Peavy rage 158 amp. It my first and only amp and it serves me well. Thanks for sharing the video
I'm a keyboard/Hammond organ player... I can’t really play guitar but I seriously love what you do bro!!!! My dad plays guitar and fined my self researching, going down the rabbit hole on tone, different guitar amps, and geeking out on different gear...I always fined my self watching your videos the most, all while being entertained, educated all with a few churches and leave with a smile every time! .... I'm getting my old man one of these amps! The Red Stripe Rage or the Blazer...I already got him a old 80s Bandit 65....Peavy amps seem to be so underrated!
Nice playing and nice demo of the amp!
EVH said it best, and it's exemplified here: your tone, your sound- it's in the fingers. Love this man. Thanks.
EVH said the small Rage was the best? It sounds like someone (Eddy?) was having a joke at a reporter
My first amp! Still have it 20 something years later!
These little amps are incredible for what they are. My buddy had one laying around collecting dust so I took it home cleaned it up and added a speaker output on the back so now it can be run through a bigger cab. The thing sounds immense.
Thanks for the video Dave! I love PEAVEY and own one of them myself - Peavey Classic 30. Decent sound!
My buddy Jack has a Classic 30 too. We like 'em. Big tone.
Hi dave another cool video man you can make anything sound awsome good gravy ..
Epic piece, played beautifully and with thought. Transcending music. big Cheers Wolf Guitars Australia
My first amp was a Peavey Backstage circa 1982, loved it then sold it 'cause I needed the money. I picked up a Rage 158 a couple of years ago for old times' sake and then added a Backstage 50 to the collection. Great pedal platforms and built like the proverbial tank. I've got Marshalls, Fenders and Orange amps but Peavey amps will always be special to me. A great review of a great little amp, thanks, Dave!
Thx for the review Dave :)
I never had my focus on peavey amps... Than I saw the Josh homme video (where he was talking about the peavey decade...) and now iam totally in love with old peavey amps.
CA 6 hours after I watched this review, I bought an old red stripe peveay rage 158... And it sounds amazing!!!!
In the next days I will check out a studio pro 60.
Again, thx so much 😎
you really had that lp singin today dave , great job .....
The Peavey Blazer 158 is the rage with reverb and the blue marvel speaker. Great video brudda!
The back stage plus with your choice of speaker is a beast of a little amp I suggest any guitar player to put it on their wish list
Thanks so much for this review! Just bought this amp for €20 at the local flea-market. Haven't tried it with pedals yet, but so far I am impressed with what this little amp can do. 🤘😎🤘
I've got a "red stripe" Studio Pro 112 sat next to me & the spring line in them is lovely - even sounds good with a bass going (gently) through it. Cracking amps!
Thank you!
My first amp which I still have is a Peavey Bravo 112 which was amp of the year back when I bought it in the 90's.Amazing sounding amp, lovely cleans, built in spring reverb and distortion which goes from bluesy to ACDC and then on to Van Halen.
I *almost* bought the Bravo 112 as my first amp 😋 At the shop I tried both the Bravo and the Classic 20, but chose the Classic 20, as I thought it had a better tone. In hindsight, I regretted my decision, due to the Bravo's versatility (reverb, active tone controls and dual channels).
As a guy from Southeast USA and owner of one, I am happy you still have a Peavey in the Arsenal. The Bandit 112 seems to be gone but was a bit of a redundancy Imo. They just have a great clean tone.
My first amp too Dave. Bought as part of a guitar starter pack with an Ibanez SA160 back in 2001 I think. Still have the guitar but the amp has long gone unfortunately. Some good memories with that amp. Maybe time to buy one back too!
YEAH! In 1986 after much begging, my mom bought me a Peavy Bandit and a Hondo Strat in red. My first rig. I sadly no longer have either of them and i really wish i did. I spent years playing and learning with them. The good ole days!
loved that little amp
and the bandit.
my first amp was a 158 (non red stripe) absolutely superb little thing, i eventually had it running through a 1 x 12" cab and it sounded incredible! Dave you should definatly try the same!
How did you get it to run with another cab? I have a red stripe and there's no visible speaker jack.
Hi Dave my main amp is a 65 Deluxe reverb but I have a peavey red stripe studio pro as a backup what a fantastic little amp they are built to last and do everything…!
I own an old peavey transtube series 15w solid state and it is outstanding!
Dave, You got some mean tones out of the wee Peavey! My tiny Peavey Decade makes my ears ring worse than my Marshall half stack but I love it. That Rage is something I need to find.
If you’ve got a decade then you’re a lucky man
Yeah, I had a Rage 158 as my first amp too. Loved it.
Mine was one of the late eighties/early nineties ones with the slanted cab and the older logo (all pointy triangles). This one looks to have a bit more in the way of features, but sounds basically the same.
Cool memories.
. . . . and in one fell swoop Dave kills the entire boutique amp market. Truly the sign (as if we didn't already know) of what an incredible musician you are. I have a silver stripe Studio 112 which I play in preference to my Boss Katana. They really are amazing amps.
Hi Dave . Great little amp , Peavey are fantastic amps I play through a Peavey heritage 2 12. And that are loud
I have one. Love it to bits. Played with an office band and someone brought a Rage 158. It looked like garbage to me, but then I played it and immediately needed one. I like both channels. Just put a Boss eq into the lead channel and you’re all set.
I still have one of those. Peavy made some great amps.
You make that amp sound good! I used to gig with a 2x12 120 watt Peavey Transtube that was LOUD. I threw my back out lifting it out of a car trunk. Played that nights gig sitting down....
ok i'm in love, ty
The 15 / 8 baby Peavey with reverb was the Blazer . I have one , incredible tbh. Just bought a rage off eBay to keep it company.
These little amps certainly sound fantastic, it's the first thing that caught my attention about mine, I have a BLAZER 158 and I'm very happy with it. By the way, mine has reverb, I think that's what you're referring to in the video.
That was actually my first amp, in a bundle with a Peavey Raptor strat style guitar 😀
Edit after actually seeing the video: So cool that we share our first amp, great to see how many guitar players started with one of these!
it was my first amp also... got it and 95' Squier Fender at bargain price from friend for 75€... i gave the amp couple years ago to a owner of a pizzaplace, because he said he sometimes played guitar and tried to encourage him to play... :) i still have one without cab sitting in my storage... edit: i just noticed people mention the red stripes... it was red striped one with more standard Peavey text like Dave has here... the other one had the really pointy Peavey logo which i have still... dont know if i saved the logo...
Wow, this came just in time! I was about to sell mine, just to make space for other things. Stupid. Thanks for keeping me from being a blithering idiot. I promise to cherish it, look after it, and, of course , play it (and explore it deeper than I did until now...)!
My first amp, and I still have it!!!
A friend turned me onto these redlines...his was a Bandit.
This was in the '80's and my 1st response when seeing it was...ok....
But when he plugged in, my head was blown...😃😎👍
Good stuff does pass the test o' tjme😁
😎👍❤🖖
The peavey blazer 158 was my first amp... It is the same like this one but it had reverb..and if i remember right it was a spring reverb tank inside...i try to get one again because they where great amps in my opinion👍👍
my first amp was a 100 watt jcm900, so I got this shortly after...
Lots of late night recordings happened with this, a drum machine into that one jack, and a cassette 4 track and el cheapo mic.
I have a couple TransTube Blazers, which are almost exactly the same, except they have a spring reverb. Beware, though, they mounted the reverb pan with some foam adhesive that's prone to disintegrating, leaving the assembly to flop around inside the chassis.

That’s the video on how to wire new leads for a big pan
Hi there, I just bought a second hand Peavey Rage 158 on the internet, the other week, as a mature beginner , it is a bit of a mine field what to get to start this new interest . Great advice , many thanks I just need to learn playing as good as you are !
Nice playing. I just bought one in really nice condition for $40 and to me it sounds great!
Thanks for another great video, Dave. I'd love to see a review of a Vypyr 2 with Sanpera 2 pedal and what you'd buy next if you had that set up. Cheers
I forgot I had that as my first amp too... Upgraded to the Marshall mg100dfx after a year of learning on that thing😁
So I’m going to assume that you haven’t noticed that the silver and red stripe series blazers/rages have baffle that fits a 10 inch perfectly… I have a 1995 silver stripe rage that I put a 10 inch Jensen c10r l8 ohm in it and it made it less Swedish Death metal amounts of gain and more rage in the eq knobs. It was really a game changer for me and this amp and I left the baffle opening the stock size.
I still have one back home, which unfortunately is about 2 thousand miles from where I live now. Still, it brings back memories.😁👍👍✌️
That reminds me, I need to go get my little Peavey amp I let my friend Dave borrow - about 4 years ago (LOL, I have several other amps) It's got some great sound capabilities to it, especially for recording or using for edge of breakup. Some Peavey amps are HIGHLY underrated. My other Peavey is a tweed-style, "Classic 50" - made in the very early '90s - sounds great overdriven or clean, and surprisingly wonderful and warm at lower volumes. In fact, in a different way, I love my "50" as much as I do my "67 Blackface Twin!
My first amp was a Fender Frontman 15G. Gave it to a friend. Still have my second amp I every owned, the Roland Micro-Cube
I got mine for £20 a whiiiile ago and I'm taking it to a rehearsal on Saturday. I've always been a huge fan of peavey amps. I wish I hadn't sold my bandit.
I have exactly the same Rage 158. Bought it for 25€. I use it as practice amp and I'm totally satisfied.
I've got a '92 blue stripe Rage 158. The circuit board inside is the same as the Blazer which had reverb, just not populated. (It would be possible to build one out into a reverb model with the right parts.) I modded mine to have speaker out, and preamp line out, as well as putting selectable clippers in the distortion circuit. It's pretty fun played through a big cab.
still my main practise amp after many years
Thanks to you and In the Blues channel I bought myself peavey bandit. It is loud as hell but cheap and with really great sounds. Loudness is not good for my neighbours so I have to be extremely careful to dose gain and loudness, one mm makes huge difference xD
I have the Envoy Red Stripe. The reverb tanks fail. I also had and sold the silver stripe Envoy….that amp kicked butt and the reverb as a tank as well and worked and sounded very good to my ears. Also own the Bandit silver stripe. So much amp for the money (used) and a 3 take pedals very very nicely
For a fella (newbie) in his 50s to come across a real guitar player raving about the little, old, cheap & cheerful amp l just bought; to say l’m super excited is such an understatement.
I went to buy a Bandit 112 and decided to buy the guy’s Envoy 40w and Rage 15w.
Didn’t buy the Bandit 112, maybe should’ve got that too…
Great vid @DaveSimpson
158 = 15 watts 8" speaker
The Envoy is the 110 version of the Studio Pro (same basic circuit board, studio Pro is 65 watts, has T-dynamics and a loop)
Envoy is 2 channels with a reverb tank and switching. I've got the Red Stripe. It's a fantastic amp and it can keep up with a drummer on the lead channel.
You've made me want a Rage now :)
I have come very close to buying a Peavey on many occasions but there was always a Marshall to divert my attention. Maybe one day ?
I have this amplifier , my first amplifier also , righr now i'm using it to plug in my Alesis Strike multipad
Dave, your music on this amp is seductive. Persuaded me to buy the same Peavey Rage 158, made in U.S.A.
Now, all I have to do is learn how to play my Indonesian Harmony 02805 electric guitar.
I wonder how Happy Birthday and Amazing Grace will sound on my guitar.
Thanks for the inspiration.
I still play through mine daily. It's a great amp. Just bought a new Ltd and it absolutely screams through it
Hi Dave, i have an older peavey 158, it not sound as good as yours but i have modded and now use the clean channell at max volume with a cheap 16" speaker and sound amazing For a little cheap amp, this is My first amp too!!!
Hi Craig Macdonald here , that little one sounds great Dave , I have a peavey Stereo chorus 212 great amp got it for £90 when Chandlers at Kew London was closing down , it that sounds great and just for info anyone with a transistor amp buzzing when played in heavy gain or just load and can’t stop it with any controls , it’s the capacitors chained both on a fender stage 100 ,for £7.50 plus postage sounds great. Repair shop wanted £350 to look at it plus parts n labour to fix 😂
I still have my second amp, unfortunately not my first as I gave that to my cousin who was learning guitar at the time. First was a rage 158, the older version with metal corner protectors. It was ok, but I didn't know anything about amps or pedals and I was into high gain hard rock and metal and wanted that sound with reverb and delay etc. So I got an amp that I played through at a music store that I fell in love with once I plugged into it. Peavey Transfex208s. It's basically a modeling amp, sort of, that has eq curves that you can select in the digital efx section. They made a pedal preamp version that was set up the exact same called Max100 but they are hard to find and Google search brings up the Peavey Max100 bass amp as that is something still in their current lineup. I wish I got the larger Transfex Pro, they made a combo 2x12 and a head version. Those are very hard to find, but the 208s you can still find a couple now and then. Still kicking myself for not purchasing the Pro version every time I had the chance to. Live and learn I guess.
I have a peavy bandit 112 sitting on a big peavy cab..I think it's got a 15 in it...I call it my poor man's marshall stack...I think the damn thing is hip
I've always loved the clean sound of Peaveys - used to play through a Renown. While innovative (parametric EQ) the distortion / saturation didn't seem to appeal to me from what I recall, as this was sooo many years ago but they were tanks and very reliable for gigs.
24:12 damn! that lead channel is well worth the price and more alone.
I have a Made in USA Peavey Rage 158 amplifier, just like yours, It Rocks!!!
my first amp also!!
i have that amp i also managed to snatch a peavey ultra 410.Got my ear to the ground for a ultra plus head.
This intro was great it was like bucked head style and esily as good.
The Peavey SS amps are really pretty good.
I would be tempted to add a speaker out and try it through a bigger cab, just for giggles and shits.
i switched mine from vintage to modern and it made the loudest fucking screech it took my soul
I JUST GOT A RAGE 258 they call it a Missippi Marshall
My first was the teal stripe 158 Rage. Had a couple of distortion pedals for some lo-fi 80's thrash attempts. It wasnt amazing, but I still want another one, 31 years later lol. I wonder how it would sound with a Celestion greenback in there. Hmmm
I have a redstripe Peavey Blazer 158 which is the Rage with a little reverb tank. Holy moley what a little ripper of an amp. 15 watts of RMS goodness. My other Peavey never to be sold is a teal stripe Express 112 which is the greatly improved version of the Bandit 65. Peavey transtube amps are kind of a 'if you know you know'. Valve snobs might sniff at them but I know quite a few very good guitarists who enjoy their transtube amps.
Yes , I have a Peavey!
I still have bigger brother 112 bandit. Love it!
I used to have a Backstage that I used for gigs till i got a Sessionette. Bit quiet but also took pedals well. Somewhere in storage I have the transtube studio which I liked a lot more than the similar sized Marshall valvestate I had at the same time but sold after the second failure. What happened to Peavey?
it's a great amp!!!!!!!!
I ran a V-Amp Pro through mine and did some recordings. People had a hard time believing what I used. VAMP only has like 4 usable tones, but those 4 were good.
I have a studio pro. Never even fire up my marshall anymore. I wonder why peavey's are so underated? Yeah, in the end it will be keith, peavey, and twinkies! Keep rockin', Dave. 😜🤘
it’s not in the attach but at the end of the decay where it reveals itself as solid state amp
I've owned Marshalls and Boogies....oddly one one of the best lead tones I've ever gotten was the Peavey Rage- everything DIMED, with a Crybaby in front and active EMGs. Full throttle!
I was wondering why I’ve never heard you talk about Peavey. Peavey MIA guitars are really amazing. You can still find Peavey 1990s Predators (strat copy) in pawn shops and thrift stores. They have sharp ceramic pups but I think they sound great, especially with the tone rolled back a bit. I play mine more than my fender. If you get into 80s and 90s Peavey guitars you’ll discover some gems, their in house pickups are original, unique and full of tone. My only Peavey amp is the Envoy 110.
The Transtube series sounds absolutely great. I picked up a Transtube Supreme head for cheap and it's a real ass kicker. Loud as hell and really responsive. I really should use it more TBH.
Okey I listen on you Dave you have no low and high on O too but mids about 13 o clock and vintage mode I heard ,thanks 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
It’s the Blazer that has the reverb
I’ve just bought one 😎
My first amp was the Backstage. Now I have an Envoy 110, which can blow out the windows in my sleeping room, and a Studio Pro 112. All great. I have good ears, and I don't really hear the difference with tube amps, maybe with the exception of a Bassman 59. Have you ever tried a RathAmp Retro 20? They are fantastic.
Then there is the Peavey Express. 65 watts of yeah buddy!
