DS 1, GE7, BD2....these 3 Boss pedals can get anything you want....the EQ pedal is a wicked overdrive...
The GE-7 only increases the signal into your amp. I'm not a pedal expert but I don't believe it actually creates any clipping on its own. It's just boosting the signal into the amp which is causing the amp itself to "clip."
I agree with your 3 choices. You could live a whole lifetime and be happy with those 3. ✌️
@@castleanthrax1833 If you keep the EQ flat you only boost the signal...you crank the mids and you overdrive the amp or boost the bass or whatever you desire. Used in combination with the other two pedals I mentioned you can dial in a ton of tones...make single coils sound likee P90s or humbuckers siound like single coils....EQ is in m view the most underrated effect on my board. It also can allow you to crank your amp and still play at a low volume if you run it through the effects loop...clever little pedal.
@gregmock6808 Yes, what you've just said is true, but the drive you are getting when using an EQ as a boost is all coming from your amp.
@@castleanthrax1833your over drive pedals are just ge7’s with a preset eq built into the pedal and a signal increaser.
You should approach tone city and Collab on a Dave Simpson Golden plexi.
This is a brilliant idea, they'll more than likely do it.
The SD-1 has less bottom end because it's a tube screamer-like pedal. It will cut some of the lows and highs and have a mids bump.
Very cool demo bro.funny i just bought the jb angry driver .its amazing pedal blues driver and angry charlie in one pedal.lots of tones to choose from..so far i love it.❤🎸🎸⚘👍🌹👍🌹👍👍🌹
We need a part 2 with a Metal Zone
The moment you played the first chord with that fuzz, a filthy smirk hit your face. Quality stuff.
Great video Dave, it's like seeing a mad scientist at work. Love these types of videos. Fz1 video will be interesting. Apparently, john has recently added it to his board.
Absolutely fantastic have a wonderful weekend Dave ❤😊
Hey Dave. You should seriously check out the Boss OD-200 -- it replaced all my drive pedals ! I have a spare on here that I don't use I'd give it to you for a review (you can keep it afterwords) - hit me up if you would be into it...
If Dave doesn’t need it…
Hay,dav,I'm glad you survivd,stay,well you and the...band🎉🎉🎉
Hey man, good to see you
A very enjoyable survey of the BOSS range - you have the gift of communication mate, nice one! I recall you tipping the balance on my decision to buy a BOSS Katana 100 watt 1st generation, still got yours?
Literally just picked up an MD-2 two days ago and just waiting for it to be delivered. Bought it out of curiosity because I don’t see it anywhere or people using it. Glad you liked it and the tones you were getting were great.
The Mega Distortion is the most underrated Boss pedal ever. I’ve had one for nearly 20 years, never left my board, it’s an absolute beast.
Awesome video Dave. And "Gravy Lord" would be an awesome name for a custom Guitar Pedal 😎
I've never heard a boss md-2 sound like that!! Great playing as always!!
The danelectro daddy-o is an exact copy of the guvner for about $25. The angry driver is cool because it’s a jhs angry Charlie which is a Marshall/ mesa sound & a blues driver in 1. U can use a switcher pedal to go back and forth in it or mix them together. Od1 is basically a tube screamer with soft clipping
Great Dave!
My favorite boss pedal is the DS-2 dual overdrive. I set one for rhythm and the other side for leads.
Dude, you always sound good 👍🏻
Regular off the shelf Boss pedals are the world's standard for professional players.
It's funny that the brand gets so much respect these days because I'm an older fellow and I remember back in the '70s and early '80s and people were dissing BOSS all over the place. One of the best guitar technicians I knew at the time was dispelling those criticisms. And I was in agreement with him. It's good to see that the majority of the guitar community now acknowledges the inherent quality of these products.
@Joe-mz6dc I'm 40 and have always respected the Boss brand. It was endorsed by some of my heros as a teenager, my older neighbor got his first pedal, an SD-2, so I got a DS-1, because I trusted the brand, and love the look of their pedals. Now, I am a huge Boss collector.
Funnily enough, John actually added the Boss FZ-1w to his pedalboard a few weeks back.
Also, can we expect a demo of the new Boss Katana Gen 3? Would be awesome to hear your thoughts.
I have to say I own a few Boss Pedals and they are BOSS- nice video as always Dave 👍👍
the thing i like (love) about boss is they have pedals for EVERYTHING, some just look or are worded different then we first thought. for the longest time i went on a klon hunt, ended up going through about 8 pedals and 2 custom built pedals and guess what i ended up with, a boss od2 as my "always on"
love their stuff and love your videos dave
Once again Boss shows who is the boss. Love your playing, regards from Mexico. Let us know about your touring, you should come to Mexico City, we could arrange that. Both SD1 and Mega distor did the job, of course, but its clear that your guvrnr and plexi are your sound, Boss has that standard, which works so fine. On Roland world I love Boss Fender FBM1, it is a full preamp which can be quite close to Guvrnor, digital COSM, the level of control with FBM1 and FDR1 into a solid state amp is quite something, tube amps after Blues Jr I feel COSM lacks, but who am I to question The Edge, anyway in my opinion there you need analog to enhance and not limit... But those two pedals with solid state or small tube amps are delicious. I love BD2, DS1 and FZ1W. You might try the boss AW3 autowah with expression, again maybe the digital side of the equation you wont like in a wah... but it might work for shure. It is amazing all the ways to have different but close results through all the paths, very interesting video in that regard. A pleasure to listen to you.
Chris Buck did a video recently where he showed the costs to his band for a 3 show "tour" in the US.
The total was staggering.
If you don't watch Chris Buck you should check him out... especially the video I mentioned. ✌️🇦🇺
Good idea! I use the angry driver, its an amazing pedal, and does so much!
I have over 60 Boss pedals, I love them, and am trying for a full compact pedal collection.
Hi Dave, you should try the Boss power stack as well. So far I've tried of all those boss pedals, it is very close to the marshall amp which is on the edge of break off.
After playing for almost 40 years I recently bought an ST-2 and a BD-2. I can easily cover all my dirt requirements with these two pedals.
I use the power stack on my ME 70 and love it for a cranked Marshall stack tome ❤
If you can get all your tones crammed into Boss' catalog, then it's possible to go even smaller than the modeler/amp stompboxes by using the Boss Katana:GO (it can hold 30 banks, 60 total if you count guitar and bass banks together). Program all the patches at home, have a variety available at your venue. :-)
That's a headphone amp.
Can you plug it into an amp, rather than headphones?
@@castleanthrax1833 Just found out they killed it, so my adapter I was going to make for it is dead before arrival. Back to working on the WAZA headphone mods/glue. Dang, I had hope they were going to just give us a nice end to end with a puck preamp that had all the brains of the Katana line jammed inside.
The only reason it couldn't talk to an endpoint wireless puck is if it's not in the FW - the PHY exists already inside.
Great video, Fz1w in custom mode has a great overdrive tone at low gain settings that might interest you. It took me ages to get my head around the Angry Driver, really worth playing around with, especially the parallel mode. Kind regards Giles
I’ve always had a massive love for Boss pedals, my first two pedals were an OD-1X (which I still use as my main gain/drive pedal) and a DS-1 (which I have set to Kurt Cobain’s Teen Spirit settings after seeing it in an old Guitar World article) and I also have a CH-1 (one of the best chorus pedals I’ve played and my personal favourite), BF-3 flanger, TR-2 tremolo, CS-3 compressor and they all sound awesome, Boss pedals are built like absolute tanks and I will always love them for it. Definitely one of the greatest pedal companies of all time and one of my absolute favourites
Great video and helpful comparisons! I know you've said this before but I forgot. What gauge of strings are on that guitar, and what type of pick and thickness are you using? Thanks in advance!
10 - 46s and .60mm.
Good miniature choice!
I don't currently have any Boss pedals on my board, but if every pedal company were to disappear but one, I would want Boss to be the survivor. They make nearly everything, at a reasonable price in most cases, they're unbreakable, and they sound great. What more can you ask for, especially from a major corporate manufacturer?
Yep, and they're the one type of affordable brand that very few snobs will turn their noses up at.
OS-2!! That was my first pedal, and its crazy underrated and overlooked. Im not a fan of the OD side but full knob on the DS side and it's a beast.
Man ! The super over drive has been a mainstay on my board since my band mate 14 years ago was like you need to get this pedal.
Yes, Boss is definitely a good choice if you're looking for a new pedal! Prince knew that as well.
I never got on with the SD-1 personally because of the lack of low end... I always felt like I was playing through a transistor radio whenever I kicked it on. 😂
I eventually settled on the BD-2... Full-bodied, but retains clarity when you roll off the volume to clean it up, which it does very well.
It's been in my signal chain continuously for about 8 or 9 years now. I'd go as far as to say it's the only pedal I truly can't live without, as it's literally always on while I'm playing.
Awesome video Dave. Enjoyed that. The Mega Distortion sounds amazing 👏🏻 So annoying with that volume jump. I was having that problem on my pedalboard. So all that was put aside and went for the Katana and footswitch. Get everything I need and my Distortion tone is using the Guv"nor pedal in the amp. Makes life so much easier at band practice and gigs. Can I ask what pickups are in Mr White?
The stock tex mex ones. :)
Excellent vid once again Dave. Your original pedals, given the sound that you love, can never quite be replicated exactly sadly. However as you have shown us, that with a little fiddling/tweaking, you can get damnably close with other units. Neither are less good than each other, they just bring a slightly different deck of cards to the table and the final arbiter is personal taste at the end of the day. I do think though that if you ever use the Boss pedals live, you will have to get a new Vox V845 Wah to hedge your bets a bit. That's me done and keep on rockin' brother Dave.
I am as ever your humble servant.
Sincerely
Alex the K
Fun video as always. Have you tried reversing the order of the SD-1 and the DS-2? Sometimes the weirdest things can be caused by, or even resolved by reversing the order of pedals. It may not resolve the volume jump, and it might not even have the sound you want, but it could be worth a try. The good news is it's free to do and only requires a few minutes to compare! 🙂 Cheers.
I have a boss st-2. sounds great, also for stacking overdrives. Definatly worth trying
I've been after an Angry Driver for ages - disposable incoming not yet permitting - Ben McLeod from All Them Witches does a video where he explains why the Blues Driver is just the best pedal and it's compelling. Good video Dave, very interesting.
Sssshhhhh…… don’t tell anyone about the MD-2. It’s been a secret weapon of mine for years. A Tele or Strat into a Fender valve amp with one of those covers a massive range of tones just by using the guitars knobs. The cleanup is great, it goes from glassy crunch to fuzzy, raspy goodness and everything in between.
The good old zoom G1X! I must see if mine still works!
If you don’t a/b them to comparison, I don’t think we would know the difference. But since you did, I really love the tone city plexi and the governor. Great pedals. All of them 😂.
Thanks for this kind of stuff Sir Dave.
The only Boss pedal to go wrong on me had an argument with a falling bass cab that crushed all the controls. Currently loving the 200 series. GE7 is a really, really great OD and can cover up, or expose, a multitude of sins. Thanks to you and Boss for this vid Dave.
Worth watching just for the expression on your face at 35 mins as you say "It's not an issue ...coz I love it!".
Amazing work ❤ hows the tone for rammnn steeeeeinnnn coming along?!
Keep it up my guy! 🤘🙏
some sweet tones coming from the various setups but i'm sure some messing about without the camera rolling will provide a better idea of which way to blend them all in. do you have a Boss wah? i had the same volume inconsistencies with the Ibanez wah so i decided to try the Boss V--wah out - it also has a great Univibe setting. good luck with the setup man 😁
I admire your talent whatever you choose l am happy!🙂
Boss pedals are great. Inexpensive relatively speaking and great quality. Get a few of those and your set for life if you’re not a tone chaser.
The MD-2 was the first pedal I ever got when I was learning to play. I got it because I hated how the distorion sounded in the Solid State Randall amp I had and I used that pedal until it died.
Hi Dave. I do own a Guvnor plus Gv-2 and it is one of my favourites pedals. A few months ago I purchased a Cinders pedal ( Boss bluesdriver ) and I can tell you that the Cinders can do a lot of things, many players use it as an all time pedal on. At low gain it is a good pusher, I do push the guvnor with the cinders and I am happy with the sounds I get from it.
It gets a bit crazy as you turn the gain on, anyhow I think it is a bit cleaner in higher gain than the Bluesdriver.
Those TC Electronic pedals are great, aren't they? They're kinda big, but they're such great value and really well made.
@@castleanthrax1833 Yes they are great. The only downside is that the pedal gets on when the footswitch is off, but it is ok for me.
try an MXR Super Badass for the guv replacement. also, try the boss OD-3 overdrive to replace the golden plexi. its very transparent like the blues driver but not scooped... pretty flat eq
Hello Dave, have a great day
With the colour knob set anti clockwise on the os2 it IS an sd1. However might be small diffs in gain.
Surprised no-one's mentioned the Boss BP-1w booster preamp (or they did and I missed it). Maybe not a direct replacement for either pedal but it has an awesome CE-1 preamp mode which sounds very Frusciante-like to my untrained ears. Love mine!
You should try the truetone / visual sound jeckyll & hyde, it’s a dual pedal with a Nobel ODR1 on the overdrive side (tubescreamerish/SD1 style but more opened / transparent), and a GuvNor on the distortion side (with additionnal tonal shaping knobs/switches for each side), and they both have separate in/out jack sockets so it’s like if you had 2 pedals, you can plug pedals between them.
Best replacement I've found for the Guvnor 2 is the Xvive t1 Golden Brownie
Boss OD-3 would give the bottom end the SD-1 was lacking. surprised it was not on the list.
The Mega Distortion gets good sounds but it does take a bit of wrangling to really dial in what you want out of it (as you demonstrate). You can also get some really wild sounds out of it exploring the extremes of it.
Unrelated to that, I think for a daily driver distortion, a classic Rat does it for me and I love my mosky obsessive overdrive.
Sounds good to me. As long as it fits with what you sound like.
Bought myself a little gadget, Fender Micro Mustang headphone amp (with usb audio).
Checking it out (after reviewing). Sounds pretty Fender to my ear, hey little over €100 🤠
OD3 would be worth a try for the golden plexi - nice clean amp in a box type. SD1 into Blues Driver is classic but doesn’t get as heavy as you want for distortion. Mega Distortion I don’t have but has a lot of scope
Hey Dave picked up a Guv’nor while ago a never got on with it. Probably only got it because of your extended usage. Let us know if you need a back up one.
Feel like the angry driver can use a deep dive video! Its both the angry charlie which is a marshall in a box type pedal along with the blues driver in one. Since it can be foot controlled to switch between on stack em i think they might just replace the guvnor and plexi with enough tweaking. Great vid!
good vid , i was wondering , there are LOTS of electronics experts on the tube that could possibly clone your favorite peddles using the correct components ? nice project and a couple of cross over videos ?
I'm not trying to be nasty, but it's "pedals." Please forgive my correction. ✌️
@@castleanthrax1833 no i will make it my life's mission to stalk you on you tube correcting you and generally making your life a misery , thats what happens isn't it ??? 😁
Dave just recently seen ur interview on 5150 podcast from 3 yrs ago. Was very interesting. We’re still waiting on that live Peter Green Tribute show. I’m very curious to hear ur tasteful interpretation on each solo, also on which #s youd decide to play out if greens catalog
Im not a metal player, but once I touched a boss metal zone (waza craft edition) it never left the board, I tried to replace it just because its black and it says “metal” but with low to medium gain and a ts stacked its just heaven, and with the eq the metal zone has you can have pretty much any sound, give it a go dave if you can😜
Dave you should totaly try to get your hands on a Barber Direct Drive v4. I tried the jackhammer, golden plexi, strymon riverside, bogner la grange, plextone and tons of other marshall in a box pedals: but thats the one.
Just make sure you put your PastFX preamp in front of it or the WH10 will react funny. If I had to choose one marshall in a box pedal, either the Barber or the Ziggy V2 from Crazy Tubes....
Boss bc 2 combo drive is in its own league and super versatile!
The sd1 sounds good but the golden plexi and gv2+ really is your sound, just get a few backups as they are still available on eBay, reverb, guitar center etc
Great playing as always 👍🏻
Dave mega distortion is very underrated Boss pedal cheap on used market i pick one up for £30 it’s in marshall ball park.
The Katana have a Guv nor model in it not sure about a Boss plexi pedal Blues Driver cranked? I have a Boss overdrive/ distortion, handy pedal you can blend
Hey Dave, have you ever tried a Caline Englishman? It's a cheap pedal that gets a really good Plexi tone all the way up to a JCM800 tone
Golden Plexi is allegedly based on the Carl Martin Plexitone, which is now reasonably easy to get, though obv not at Tonecity prices. Guv'nor 2 is more difficult to find a sub for since most pedals are based around the v1, 3 band eq would help you get there easier probably...JHS Angry Charlie v4 maybe or MI Audio Super Crunch Box v2, though JHS is pretty costly and Crunch box is hard to find. MXR M75 Super Badass Distortion is pretty available and not too expensive, and seems to be in the Guv'nor ballpark from what I hear.
Hello Dave! As a Golden Plexi and a GV-2 owner I would recommend u try the Boss ST-2 Power Stack. Cheers
Angry Charlie is the original Marshall Governor
That Angry Driver sounds badass.
That angry driver sounds awesome, but I agree the GV-2 has a very distinctive sound- they should have re-released this (along with supervibe, jackhammer etc) instead of the Shredmaster/Bluesbreaker batch reissues!
Those boss pedals will work great as live replacements though- are you still using them?
I got ear-blind after 3 mins... and so will the audience! - But, just get backups for what you have, plenty around still...
Take two on the road. (backup).
I really wanna hear dat Fuzz
Also if you want a Super Overdrive with more bass try the Waza Craft version in custom mode.
Did you ever tried the DS2 on mode one with the DST around 12 to 1 o‘clock? in my opinion the DS2 on such a setting is a great edge of break up tone. So you can use two DS2s on your board. Like John do it nowadays. Maybe just an idea to try :)
@Dave Simpson, go and buy that golden plexi version 1 on reverb they've got a few new and quite a few used
would love to hear you play and ur thoughts on the new katana
Coming soon. :)
I’m surprised they didn’t include the Power Stack for you to try since it’s billed as the classic Marshall in a box
Your Mexican strat sounds great 👍🏻 Any advice for some great cheap strat pickups?
Tone rider city limits.
After the dental work did you feel comfortably numb? 😅
Dave golden plexi is a genius collaboration ❤
Hi Dave,
How are you using the Angry Driver, I am asking because this pedal is actually 2 pedals in one, you got the Boss BD2 and the JHS Angry Charlie, you can use them independently, in parallel or in series if I remember correctly.
The Angry Charlie should be very close to the guvner.
Just my 2 pennies, great video as usual.
Very timely video for me, in an absolute brain fade, I sent too much voltage to my golden plexi MK1 and cooked it !!! Now I can’t find one !!!
Danelectro Daddy-O’s a Guvnor clone that isn’t still being made, but will show up for cheap. Wampler had some kind of Plexi Drive that’s supposed to be a good one, too but I haven’t had any hands on experience.
I liked the Super Overdrive. I was going to ask about getting a CryBaby wah but I saw one on top of your Boss Katana amp in the background. Have you ever used the Boss Blues Driver? If you already made a video of it I have forgotten or missed it. Great video as always. 👍☮️🌞🎸🎵🩷
I have got a vid on the blues driver. Great pedal but a bit thin and bright for me.
Hey Dave, thanks. I’ll check it out 👍.
I find it weird that they didn't send you the BOSS power stack considering that it's their "Marshall in a box" type pedal, also the BOSS OS-2 is pretty good. I own both and I'd highly recommend you try them
Glad boss are looking after you dave..you've probably helped to shift a few thousand katanas..be well mate
And the Frusciante Ibawah 😎
Try the Boss Power Stack.
I'm surprised that they didn't send you the Power Stack. It nails that driven Marshall thing
I forgot to ask for one. Doh.
Want to borrow mine? Can post it down Louth way if you want
