    One theory I had with the burning of King's Landing is wildfire by Aegon. When Aegon takes kings landing, Jon Connington's grayscale starts to infect the city at the same time Daenerys marches on King's Landing. So when she starts the siege, Aegon and most of his army is gone (left before the battle due to grayscale outbreak), but when Daenerys breaches the wall Jon Connington would light off the wildfire burning King's Landing and some of Daenerys's army. And Daenerys would be blamed for it.

    I think the secret to making Valyrian steel is forging regular steel with dragon fire. The dragon fire magically makes the steel lighter stronger and sharper.
    Which brings me to the theory that the Iron Throne is made of Valyrian Steel. All of those swords were bathed repeatedly with dragon fire and even though the throne is hundreds of years old the edges are still sharp. How many times has it been mentioned in ASOIAF that a king or queen cuts themself on the throne? Regular steel would have gone dull by now just sitting there but Valyrian steel would have held it’s edge.
    I guess what I’m getting at is if the people of Westeros get their heads out of their asses they can equip an army with Valyrian steel to fight the others when winter comes.
    That would be sick af!

    • @Elias_Ehler
      @Elias_Ehler Před rokem +25

      If dragon fire is responsible for the creation of Valyrian steel, the Iron Throne would only have a thin coating with the properties of Valyrian steel. This would also explain the many foldings of Valyrian blades.

    • @phillipmargrave
      @phillipmargrave Před rokem +13

      I always thought it made sense that dragon fire was used in the pattern welding process like the dragon breathes fire on the steel between folding instead of it being put back into the forge to reheat or dragon fire was used in the tempering process after the steel was quenched or maybe dragon fire was needed to light the forges the Valyrian smiths used

    • @thelocdesiringentryintoyou3686
      @thelocdesiringentryintoyou3686 Před 11 měsíci +15

      Seems to me that Valyrian steel is steel forged and tempered in dragon fire, with obsidian put into it as an intentional impurity, like how Damascus steel was intentionally impure so that it would develop nanotubules in the blade and make it lighter and stronger. This would explain why it can kill walkers or wights, would explain why it’s sharper(heating up steel doesn’t necessarily make it sharper, but adding in the sharpest material we really know of would) and then the steel and obsidian kind of merge taking on properties of one another.
      This seems the most likely explanation. Damascus steel with obsidian instead of wood impurities, and it has to be treated with dragon fire to melt the obsidian and steel together.
      Blood(from a dragon or from a Targaryen or some other magical blood) is likely used as a binding agent between the obsidian and steel, or to cool the blade after tempering. It is also possible that dragon bone is integrated into the blade like or instead of the obsidian.
      What do you guys think?

    • @andrewli6606
      @andrewli6606 Před 10 měsíci +7

      Problem with that idea is that would make Valyrian steel pretty easy to make, which seems inconsistent with the rest of the story. If dragon fire is all that's required to make Valyrian steel, why would the Targaryens only have a handful of Valyrian steel objects? Even if they lost the knowledge to make it, it makes no sense even minor dragonlords would have so little VS if dragon fire is all that's required. Additionally, it's said that Euron's VS armor would have cost a kingdom even in the days of the Valyrian Freehold, so it cannot be that easy to manufacture.

  • @xxrockraiderxx

    A different theory that I've heard is that the Blackfyre which was invited to join the Great Council which would eventually select Aegon V "The Unlikely", had brought Blackfyre with him as a symbol of legitimacy to use at the council, but when Bloodraven attacked him at the docks, had to quickly pass the sword off to someone who hid it in Kings Landing somewhere, potentially Rhaenys' Hill or Visenya's Hill as there's plenty of secret tunnels and caves in both.
    Though honestly whilst the other one has an air of mysticism around it, it doesn't make as much sense as Illyrio having the sword. Especially if you believe the theory that Illyrio married the last female Blackfyre and that their kid is fAegon and that he promised her that he'd put their child on the throne of Westeros. So most likely the sword is in Storm's End waiting to be handed to Aegon VI.

Last we know, it was with the Golden Company. How would it wind up at the Wall? Did the Golden Company lose it during one of the rebellions and for some reason the sword wasn't brought to the current Targaryen king but instead up to the Wall because a Targaryen might wind up exiled up there? That's overly goofy.

We don't know when the book is from, but Tyrion references it and suggests there are probably around 200 left. That's quite a few. And not everyone of those can be owned by a great house (especially since only three of the great(est) houses have been known to wield any (Targs, Starks and Lannisters) while the rest haven't). The impoverished Corbrays have one, the Harlaws and Drumms both have one, the goddamn Roxtons had one.

    What if Blackfyre isn't in possession of the Golden Company? The drafted Chapter for Tyrion where Illyrio mentions the gifts for Young Griff was cut out for a reason. I think GRRM changed his mind about Blackfyre being in the possession of Illyrio. It is quite interesting that both Swords that were in the possession of the Targaryen Family disappeared when Bloodraven was the last one to see them.
    Bittersteel came back during the 3rd Blackfyre-Rebellion with Haegon I. Who surrendered and gave up his Sword, before he was dishonourably killed. I think that Sword was the Bastard-Sword Blackfyre, we also have another Valyrian-Bastard-Sword called Longclaw at the Wall.
    Where were the Mormonts during that Blackfyre-Rebellion?
    I mean a poor (because Bear Island has not had a lot of resources) and small House, that can trace its Ancestors to the First Man and show a fighting woman with a Child at her Breast, not with a family bastard Sword but with an Axe at the Gate to their Hall, has a Valyrian-Steel Sword? That thing was most likely stolen or "found" on a Battlefield. And the Mormonts changed the hilt and put the Bear pommel on it and claimed to have it for 500 years. No one can say otherwise when it was rarely used outside the Family until no one knew any better and just accepted that the poor Mormonts came to its possession somehow.
    In the Text, we have few to no descriptions of Blackfyre, only that no one could have mistaken it for another Sword and that it is a Bastard Sword. And that Aegon rarely used it and preferred to use Balerion the Dread.
    I think GRRM wanted to avoid the Blackfyre-Connection because he wanted to be vague with Aegons Backstory because that would be more interesting, he was right, look at all the Discussions about that small Character.
    Btw we only have an answer from GRRM from 2018 to a Fan that Brynden took Dark Sister with him to the Wall, okay ADWD came out in 2011, but GRRM left this part of the Draft out for a Reason, most likely to avoid Connections between Aegon and the Blackfyres. So the Answer from GRRM doesn't mean that Illyrio has Blackfyre. It just means that in this Draft there is a Sword, most likely a Valyrian Steel Sword, that can be said to be Blackfyre because no one knows what Blackfyre looks like.
    I think a Mormont "found" Blackfyre on the Battlefield (or they took it and hide it away when Haegon gave it up), took it with him/her to Bear Island, changed the appearance of the hilt and the Pommel and only showed up with it a hundred years later when no one knew what Blackfyre looked like.
    Otherwise, please explain to me how a small and poor House like the Mormonts of Bear Island came into the possession of a Valyrian Steel Sword?

    • @Ilargizuri
      @Ilargizuri Před rokem

      I wanted to add that I always thought that it was odd that the Mormonts had a Valyrian Steel Sword, when it's lack of funds to buy such a thing is stated again and again. Valyrian Steel was never cheap. So it was always clear to me that the Mormonts didn't buy that thing. The idea that it could be Blackfyre comes from the CZcamsr Bridge 4, but I like that idea, I mean every Family has a Black Sheep or two ;)

    • @bierwolf8360
      @bierwolf8360 Před rokem

      according to Tyrion there are "thousands in known world, hundreds in Westeros alone" and archmaester Thurgood's Inventories lists 227 blades in Westeros (some have been lost, but most are still around). There aren't hundreds of great houses though and few of them wield valyrian steel. However, several "minor" houses own (or did own) valyrian steel: Corbrays, Roxtons, Harlaw, etc. So that point is pretty moot. Purely conjecture. Combined with the fact is requires the Mormonts to have lied, it's plain unlikely. Not to mention that it's never been mentionend that Haegon wielded Blackfyre himself instead of Aegor doing it. Aegor remains the last known wielder and died in Essos.
      Lastly, there are without a doubt many descriptions of Blackfyre within books within ASOIAF. It's not like people would just leave out this detail. It's silly. We don't know what it would look like, but the people of Westeros, or at least those semi-educated would.
      PS: "took it with him/her to Bear Island" made me puke.

    • @Ilargizuri
      @Ilargizuri Před rokem +2

      @@bierwolf8360 First: Women on Bear Island learn to fight, so a Mormont Woman can join the War against the Blackfyres. That's the reason I used both sexes, so no reason to puke because of that. If you want to say that People would recognize a Woman in Disguise, please, no one realized Brienne is a Woman until she revealed herself. We are talking about a world where Men need to check their sexual characteristics to distinguish Women from Men. Although there a more than enough hints to differentiate a woman from a Man without checking for visual sexual Characteristics.
      Second: People can lie even if they are known as members of honourable and honest Houses/Families. Which we learned through the Books, I mean if not, you have to believe Eddard Stark impregnated a woman named Wylla during Roberts's Rebellion and came back home with their Son. And by the way there is a black Sheep in every Family.
      Third: GRRM adds things and deletes Things from his Book, sometimes he changes his Mind, as it is the fact in this Chapter where that Sword is mentioned. Just because no one ever mentioned it, doesn't mean that Longclaw isn't Blackfyre, we don't know enough about Blackfyre. And neither does anyone at the Wall, the only one who could say if it is Blackfyre or not is Aemon and he is blind. Same for those who fought with Jorah during Robert's Rebellion, every semi-educated Person who was a Maester was busy taking care of the injured and because Longclaw is Valyrian Steel, no Smith would have seen it. And even if someone saw Longclaw, just like you no one would even think it was Blackfyre because it was the Family Sword of House Mormont. After all, Jorah said it is. I mean he is from House Mormont and from the North, these People are terrible Liars as we know. People see what they want to see or what they are told to see, Because People from House Mormont said it was their Sword, but no one saw Blackfyre. Because no one ever searched for Blackfyre nobody even assumed it was Blackfyre because clearly that is lost over in Essos, because no one of House Targaryen during the 3rd Blackfyre-Rebellion wanted to admit that they still didn't reclaim their ancestral Valyrian Steel Sword although they captured the last known Owner of that Sword.
      One Fact remains until now GRRM only answered one Fan-Question and that was about the Location of Dark Sister, everything else and that means both our Theories are only that Speculation & Theories. Canon is nothing, only what GRRM will write into his Books.

    Winds of winter may give the answers. Every Blackfyre was defeated by targaryns. Daenerys and Jon Snow the real targaryns will join and defeated the others. Bloodraven aka three eyed raven is still watching the kingdom with his Dark Sister. He will give it to Dany . Dance of the dragons was a fight between Blackfyre and Dark Sister.

    I didn't like the House of the Dragon design for Blackfyre. I was hoping we could get a new design for it for another adaptation.

      Honestly I kinda like it. Feels not-the-most functional, more ceremonial, which fits this sword in particular.

      @@QuinnTheGM Eh. I had wanted a battle ready Targaryen sword. All the other houses weapons can be used in battle. Even ice could potentially be used. And its a great sword. Remarkable Valerian Steel is lighter than regular metal
