Just found your channel and found the video interesting. The Gillette Slim was my first razor back in '63. My mom gave me my dad's old razor and told me to keep it set on a no.1 until I get use to it. If I do remember after talking to my dad about the razor, he told me to make sure that I open the doors when changing the setting. This makes sure that the blade is seated correctly. If you don't open the doors, the adjusting mechanism may not move to the correct position.
I lost my original Gillette Slim while I was in the service. I have since replaced it and also have 2 Gillette Fatboys. I find both of these razors to be excellent razors.
I do a two-pass shave everyday with an assortment of razors.

Glad you got a decent shave with that Fatboy, but on 1. That screams tune-me-up!
I bought a FatBoy from razor emporium as my first adjustable. 1 barely cuts and 9 will scrap to the bone. I'm definitely a 3 man when I use it. Also have a birth year Slim adjustable that I really enjoy. For me the slim is a bit more nimble than the fatboy. However; my favorite adjustable is the Rex Konsul.
You did a great job sharing your shave experience and I like that you hit on the topic of, revisiting early items. I formed the same opinion a few months ago. Especially when it comes to blades. Blades I used when I first start the DE shaving adventure that didn't yield good results are now decent to supreme performers a year later. Technique is very important. But it's only one of several factors to get a great shave. Soap, blade, pre-shave, and post-shave are just as important.
Can't wait for your next video!

Nice shave David! I have a 1959 Fatboy and a 1967 Slim that I sent to Razor Emporium forevamping. I had the Slim done first in rhodium, and the Fatboy done in nickel. Both look great, but IMO the nickel looks better.
I'm not sure about every Fatboy, but mine is very picky when it comes to blades. Some blades that work perfectly for me in other razors feel bad in the Fatboy. I should've made a list of the blades that work because I've forgotten which ones are best lol 😅 (I use alot of different blades to keep things interesting 😉)
    Have a good one!

    Hey Dave!
Another great video. I’m considering adding a Fatboy to my razor collection someday. I want to say I think I remember my father having one when I was 3 or 4 years old before he switched to the disposables. Sadly, I don’t think he kept it, and we had to lay him to rest on 4/20 of this year. He passed just 2-days short of his 85th birthday. May that Marine rest well and guard the gates of heaven dutifully.
Anyway, I’ve found Thayer’s at Walmart; both in Indiana and in Georgia. Really good stuff for its price point.

I’ve watched a lot of your videos but never commented before. It’s good to see the focus on technique and face mapping in this one for newer wet shavers to be inspired by. I’ve use that combo: fatboy, PCC blade, TOBS Sandalwood many times with great results. I generally run my fatboys on 5-7, on one I make a mess of my face. A few suggestions, you seem to shave once a week so,lots of growth, I find every 2-3 days gets better results as it balances rest time for skin without too much ‘work’ for the blade. Lather consistency is a personal thing but I would try thinner lathers and see if that helps. Kensurfs goes extra thin, that does not work for me but you should try it. To minimize irritation I’m careful to do only one stroke per location on each ‘pass’ - no blade buffing/short strokes over the same area. Maybe that’s why the higher settings work well for me - even with a feather or Nacet. Great videos, it’s been fun to watch you progress in wet shaving. Keep up the great content.

Hmm. One of the best shaves I ever had was with one of my Fatboys (I have two). Paired with a Derby Premium.
But I kind of broke a rule of DE shaving to get it. I applied pressure. A lot of it. Like I would with a cartridge razor. Strange thing is I wasn't paying a price for doing it, like I would if I dared try it with my Timeless or Futur. It was probably my closest, smoothest shave ever, but the surprise was there was no sting with the alum, or witch hazel, or aftershave. It was without feedback. My skin was unaffected. I didn't think that was possible.

Of the few vintage Gillettes I’ve tried the 1932 “new” long comb is the best I’ve tried hands down. Smooth but very efficient especially for how smooth it is. Smoothest OC I’ve ever used.
Fat handle post war tech was way too mild but the 3D printer base plates made it fun.

You should note that you need to loosen the doors before adjusting numbers, that may be damaging your razor.

I am team 3 piece razor. Granted it was early in the game but my first TTO experiences went way too bad. I've got a couple of vintage techs I hope to get my technique up enough to where I can use them.
I started out doing a bowl lather, but I notice face lathering does my shave a world of good. I've finally started getting the water ratio right with my soaps because even as I was adding more water before it was still drying out.
I just have to learn when to call my shave done. I destroy my face trying to get too cute instead of acknowledging with my beard I might have to shave every day. I've got to get better at knowing when I feel north to south and get no whisker that my shave is done. My excess soap cleanse will tell me where there are points I need to touch up. To that point, I'm waiting on the timeless slant to come in to see if a slant may do me any better.
Good video. I'd be curious to see once it's gotten the RE treatment how much different it shaves.

It helps with necks or weepers that you might acquire in your shave and when you get minor skin irritation, it will help relieve the redness and it actually helps close the pores on your face. It's after you shave to see how good you were with the razor. Instead of walking around with a, red face or neck it does take away the sting and the redness

I have an extremely hard and coarse beard, not very dense but it’s hard as nails and requires a more aggressive blade gap even on 2 days growth. A more aggressive blade seems to work best in vintage Gillette’s also.

Funny enough with that old commercial, I think of that when I've gotten excellent shaves with Gillette razorblades (like the Platinum or Nacet), and I feel my face up like that at the end once I've gotten that glass-smooth BBS, lol. Always funny to me and I saw an entire reel of old shaving commercials on YT with Gillette, Personna, PAL, etc. Nice to go back into history and see how people shaved and the products they used back then.
But I have both a Fat Boy and a 1968 Slim Adjustable (both refinished; the Fat Boy came straight from Razor Emporium, the Slim I sent in), and I enjoy the Slim much more. To me the Fat Boy is a tad too aggressive for me and I can get "okay" shaves out of it but I'm not crazy about it. The Slim is more consistent and enjoyable and I think Gillette refined the razor once they starting producing the Slims, in my view. Anyways, I'm going to end up selling my Fat Boy at some point.

I couldn't see your Fatboy close enough, but maybe it has a "clicker" override" and you are on a 10 instead of a 1. It could be fixed by pressing in the clicker spring with a toothpick and turning the dial from 1 to 9 in the dialing down direction. One of my Fatboys came with the same issue.

On mine, setting 1 was SUPER mild to the point that even on the part of my face that doesn’t got particularly dense or thick it just wasn’t cutting it, no pun intended. Setting 9 was also mild and pretty smooth, BUT had a TON of blade feel which gave me irritation. Setting 5 got the job done 99.9% after 3 passes, but wasn’t particularly efficient. The angle to cut is very different with the Gillette Fatboy. Start with the handle perpendicular to your face and slowly tilt the handle until it just starts cutting. I think you possibly have the handle tilted too shallow in relationships with your face. Try putting the empty razor on a flat surface and look at the handle angle you will have the handle much higher than something like a Henson.

  • @tikrais

With all Gillette adjustables, you can only adjust down when TTO knob is closed tight. After tightening on setting 1, you twisted to somewhere close to 7. And it looks like you did that quite easily. Probably you shaved with TTO knob not turned tight enough. That could be a reason why it was so aggressive. On setting 1 fatboy should have similar aggressivenes like rockwell with plate 1 or 2. Maybe Matt's rewamp is not really necessary ;)
