I am 58 and have decided to start playing the cello as achallenge to myself! I have a neuro problem affecting my arms and hands and cannot feel properly but refuse to give up. I am not sure how it will get on but i loved the fact that in the video the position of the hand/bow/cello is pretty much how my hand is normally! Let the adventure begin (tho not sure if my cat will like it!!)
Hi! I'm 55 years old and have a relatively inexpensive electric cello on order.
I have ZERO experience on stringed instruments.
When I was a kid, I was intrigued with the cello, but started on trumpet in sixth grade. I did badly on trumpet and moved to the euphonium (baritone), in ninth grade through 2 years of college and did pretty well.
During those years much of the music I played was originally written for bassoon or cello. A lot of baroque stuff by Bach, Telemann, etc...
So this has always been kind of a "bucket list" thing for me, to learn cello. At least the simpler music for my own entertainment.
Corona virus is now keeping a lot of us home and bored so this is a great chance for me to put my idle time to good use. Wish me luck!
How did you get on?
@@MiloMcCarthyMusic So so ,..I managed a low squeak/groan so i guess that's something. At the moment due to refurbishement and my hands being quite bad the cello has ad to go in the loft, as not enough room and t could get damaged, but it will come out again after February. I wont give up. Thank you for asking
@@mayorb3366 well done. hows it going?
@Luke Schneider ooh thank you :)
Thank you so much! I am 73 yo, just retired and always wanted to learn the cello. I look forward to following you.
My husband is just amazing, he bought me a cello! It's my favorite instrument and he saw how excited I was about the idea of learning to play. So he bought me a nice beginners cello and told me to find a teacher so I can have some "me" time, (aka - break from 4 kids 5 and under) I was so floored by the gesture. I'm glad I found this video, as I have never held a Cello a day in my life! I can't wait to get started! Thanks for the video, I will be looking for more.
My eight year old has just starting playing and this was invaluable helping me to set it up. Many thanks from a clueless parent.
thank you. this is a "bucket list" item of mine. no instrument speaks to me more.
Thanks :)
Me too, the only reason I havnt already started is because of the money
See if you can rent one from a local music store! Get started soon to play better sooner, you’ll be happy with how you play much faster
@@greablood1072 yeah for me to rent a used cello is only $35 a month!
I am 73....let the adventure begin. Wish me luck!
Best of luck!

Sad your company doesn’t create a section just for « cello ». When I go on the CZcams site I must hunt for the cello videos and it is difficult to find them.
Yes! There are people who like the way you teach!
Thank you!😊
P.S. I’m 68. Played for the church for a year. Plan on going back because my granddaughter wants to learn to play. I also taught myself piano and organ. My first song believe it or not, was Chopins wWaltz in C# Minor. Was always told sharps were difficult so I learned a song phrase by phrase until I learned ! I’m a very good sight reader☺️👍
I’m 15 and today I just had my first cello lesson :) it was very fun i look forward to mastering the cello ☺️
you're 18 now how's the journey 🙂 should i learn? i want to so please tell me 😭🙏
For my 43 birthday, just the other day, my sweet husband made a dream come true. He bought me a cello so I can learn

Happy to hear it☺️, you will love cello
The cello, a very elegant and beautiful instrument. It has a lovely bold sound.
I've been playing for two years, but I still have much to learn. Cheers for the video.
I’ve been playing the cello over 20 years but I am still watching this video!
Happy to hear that you liked it :)
Thanks Justin! This video was very helpful in getting me started. I’m definitely getting a teacher but due to Covid it’s on hold. I really appreciate your teaching style and your clear explanations. So awesome! 🎵
I am 38 and I just started cello lessons last Sunday. And it's quite difficult for me to hold the bow. Hehe
It will become easier every time you practice :)
Hello I'm 10 and I love the cello.😁I can't wait to start playing in strings class!😃
I’m 15 and I currently play the violin and am teaching myself how to play the guitar. I am thinking about taking up the cello because I find it such a beautiful instrument in the orchestra and it would be amazing to learn more instruments.
You will love cello ;)
Thank you Justin really helpful, just received a cello for my 55th birthday , really excited. Thanks for sharing your wisdom
Thank you for sharing your experience. I am 64 and just learning. It is challenging but worth it.
Thank you so much for this. Taking up the cello again 25 years after my stint at 11 years old :)
I have bought a cello amd I am going to learn to play! It is my dream!
Go for it! :)
How's it going so far?
@@randykimbrough3046 awful, I fell into a depressed state during the pandemic, but I'm much better and plan to get back to it 🙏
@@iracircosa8890 Don't give up!! take it slowly and have patience with your self..I'm 34 and i just started
This is a WONDERFUL, comprehensive introduction. Thank you !!
That C is like thunder, I love it! You forgot to do a quick mention of your comfort short C string pin, so a regular pin isn't poking you in the ear all the time. I assume it has an adjustment tool that connects into a socket in the end of the short pin, like an Allen wrench or something?
I am 53 and started violin 2 years ago. Today I want to give the cello a try. I am borrowing one for the week.
I was just wondering how having 3 pegs works? I’ve been playing cello over 10 years and have never seen this.
This is a wonderful video, it’s the best one I have found so far!
Thanks, very helpful tips!
I'm 15 and in September if 2019 I started playing the cello because it such a lovely instrument! Anyway I'm hopefully joining training orchestra at my school in a few weeks so yay!?
Thank you for this video! Informative and kind teaching without feeling condescending :)
Im 12 and chose to play the cello in orchestra today!
Im so excited
Edit: I'm now 13 and because of this freaking virus, I can't play anymore
All the best
it's fun I've been playing for 2 yrs
Im 12 too and hope to start playing the cello in orchestra when school opens up. I'm so excited 😝😝😝😝
me too ! my first class is on friday :)
Chicken Nugget yeah I have an online cello class soon and I don’t know how to play
The cello has always intrigued me. I want to start learning how to play, but can't quite afford to rent just yet. I'm starting off learning some basics in the meantime like how to read sheet music! ^^ I am concerned about the wrist position. Wrist problems have been quite prominent in my family as of late.
Fantastic stuff Justin, this will take me from bass and upright bass to the next step with string playing..I'll be keeping up with your other videos...
VERY educational 🙌🙌🙌🙌
GOD bless you
Thank you so much ❤️😊❤️
You are so welcome :)
I played violin as a youngster but the cello...I want to learn how to make it weep like I do. I want to play Prince on it! :-p I'm 58 too! Great relaxing video. Cute Host!
I don't own a cello my but ever since I was 14 I always wanted a cello. To me a cello seems like a sophisticated instrument but eventually I had a guitar (still bad at it). For awhile I kinda forgotten about cellos and was intrigued with guitars instead the further I try to master them. Until then, my interests of cellos have returned and I still yearned of either renting one or buying one (or make it from scrap even though I'm no carpenter) and I rather have the electric cello👍
Thousand thanks!
I just bought a cello as I've always wanted to play. This was very helpful!
Hi Justin, Thank you for your excellent video. I was interested in the chair, but don't see the link below. Any idea where we can find it? Thanks again! Great video.
Great video, thanks!
Glad you liked it!
I like this video my son really wants to play the cello
Hi Justin, loved the video!
Im just starting out cello and I do not know anything about it.
Awesome tips you had in your video!
I have one question about the bow, how tight are you meant to tighten the horse hair?
lovely, the best intro I have watched for a while. thanks. very helpful for me to get the basis of cello
Love your videos, Justin! Thanks for your time!
Hello.. When could you make anther video for Cello? Thank you.
Thanks so much. Very informative 'get to know the cello' class. I'm a pianist, but have always wanted to learn the cello. So guess what? That's right....I'm doing it?
i m 20 years old i want to learn to play cello but i m poor and very busy in engineering is it too late if i start after 2 years or from now will i be able to ever play hans zimmer work.😭😭😭😭
Hello! Thank you so much for sharing this. I absolutely love how you explain everything so clear. Keep doing it, please! I just bought an ukelele and trying learning all by myself, not gonna lie I'm strugling a lot with the position of my fingers so I practice and watch a lot of videos, hope that also can help me to play the cello, hehe.
I'm currently saving money to buy my first cello!!! I would like to tell you soon how is it going with that :D Thank you again, I already suscribed to your channel!!!
Sure thing! Please let me know, how it all goes
Sometimes it's fun to rosin your bow on top of the cake which helps you work on your bow arm and movement, that's why I do it! Just don't put too much on the bow lol
Very informative...thank you.....subscribed!
Thanks!
I cant seem to get any sound out of my bow. It comes out thin and airy. I tried to clean it like I did my bass bow, and clean debris from the strings, but nothing helps. What do I do?
Did you resin the bow
This is what I needed right now) Thank you!
I am a beginner and I have a question about where I should put my hand when I play? The video was helpful
Thank you for sharing your knowledge Sir
Thanks man, you're the best.
Thank you very much, so clear and nice explanation.
👏👏👏👏
Fantastic!
Thank you! Cheers!
I am 35! and I think I'll give it a try, you made it look like a fun and enjoyable thing to play. Well it also seems easy but I suppose... it is not :) Thank you
I am sure, you will like it :) Good luck ;)
Really good video, I'm starting cello in a week and want to be really prepared and become Ling Ling.
Best of luck! :)
Remember to practice 40 hours a day

I'm 13 and I'm learning to play the Cello for school :D
Very informative video
Hi, thank you for this video. I love the cello. I want to learn to play it but I have tremors in my hands. There are a few music pieces I really want to learn to play. I really need a teacher. Do you teach over Webex? How much would you charge? What are the fees like out there? Should I invest in a cheaper cello or do you think I should rent one? They could be pretty pricey to rent.
Very big help thankyou...have not got a cello yet but working towards buying one. Possibly a entry level cello that is good to start with....any brands that are ok??? I'm also a adult so would I need a 4/4 scale cello
Hi how often should you use Rosin? Luke every time you play?
Great video!
Thank you Emily! :)
I need help my cello is not making any sound
Can you tell me more about it?
Thank u , turned out i didnt use the rosin right lol
@@sumi5335 no worries, it is a common mistake :)
What’s the best cello as a bignner ?
I need a word of encouragement. I’m a month in and having a difficult time. Having vision problems and arthritis doesn’t help
I had to choose an individual progect for a semester of music, we have one or two lessons a week. I chose to learn the cello, but I am unable to take it home with me to practice because of the walk I must take, I hope I will be able to learn the cello during my semester of music, and maybe continue on in the sting ensemble my school has
Do you need big hands to play cello? I have small hands. Any tips? I play violin (well, I've been learning to play for three years), and I am fascinated with stringed instruments. Should I get a 3/4 cello? I am tall for a woman (5'9"), but I am small boned...small hands, "lighter" features. So if my hands aren't going to be able to play the notes properly since they're too small, I'd rather just know up front so I can not invest and then feel bad because I'm not built the right way. Thanks!
Can you supply a link for the cello rosin? I looked through your description and a lot of comments and couldn’t seem to find it. I am just going to start learning as soon as I can pick up my rental but I want to be prepared. PS I live in the San Fernando Valley.
How often do you need to re-hair the bow? How can you tell when it’s necessary.
THe inroducting lesson was great, I subscrubed the cours . How can I rass to the following lessons?
My autistic son with severe speech delays calls it a"floor fiddle" because he cant get the "ch" sound out correctly.
In the past month, we have had three different cellist play at church and each time, he is moved to tears. Now, hewants to learn it. Since we homeschool, it means that I, too need to learn.
My husband, a guitarist, also now wants to learn.
When you said, "older people", it really hit home. My husband and I are both 37 and we will be teaching a 12 year old.
Now, we just need to find a place to rent at least one. Around here, if it's not played at halftime on a football field, you cant rent it.
Hello. I am 35 and I decided to start playing the cello. I studies a music conservatory before (oh, another instrument :-D) and my hands are little bit accommodated to it (my wrist stands differently than others etc). I can find out whether the hair should be placed on a string flat while plaing or whether it can be little turned out (playing more by the edge of the hair). When I try playing flat, m wrist is very uncomfortable and looks like broken. Can please anyone help? Thank you!
Mostly very useful and informative so far, but at about 4:30 in I found myself wondering what sort of tree “balsam wood” comes from and why your cello bridge was made of it. I have yet to meet a fiddle family bowed instrument whose bridge wasn’t made of maple- it’s a fine grained wood with pretty high strength in compression, and allows a fairly thin cross section to transmit lots of energy to the spruce top of the instrument. Also, I’ve used a number of square and rectangular cakes of rosin, and it is entirely possible to rotate those to various angles while applying so as to avoid developing a groove in the middle. I like the idea of a circular cake, though, and may look for one of those if I ever go through enough rosin to need more.
Im 32 never played instrument or ever learned music . Can I start ? 😅
Absolutely!
thank you! I've played the violin since i was a kid, but i havent played it like 5 years ago and now i bought a cello, i hope its not so different ahahah
I enjoy your presentations but did I understand you in saying the cello bridge was made of "balsa wood?"
I don't play the cello, I don't even have a cello, yet here i am.
I recently turned 18 and its always been my dream to sing and atleast learn 5 instruments , I already have a keyboard, piano. And a acoustic guitar. I also wants to play the bass , electric violin. And cello
Nice list ;)
Guitar string sets are made up of 3 wound - 3plain steel OR 4 wound - 2 plain steel depending on the set diameters.
Ive have played electric bass for a long time and I'm interested in Cello . I'm having trouble finding instruments better then the $200 specials and decent ones under $1000. Most of the " Student models " are way over $2000.
In my area it seems that string shops are geared towards rentals and high end nothing to choose up to $1000
am trying to learn Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major, BWV 1007: I. Prelude on my cello
I have always loved the cello but I have zero experience with any instrument, I'm 29 and Ive really been considering trying to learn, but I'm afraid it might be too late to start, especially since I know absolutely nothing about music or how to read sheets etc.
thanks for the help
Happy to help!
I want to surprise my big brother because he plays the cello
Sounds like a good idea :)
Hi Justin; I'm a beginner (74 years old, yikes) and I just used your instruction for positioning the cello. Everything was great, except the bottom peg pokes me in the head and forces me to tilt my head to the right. I know this will cause neck damage pretty darn soon. I noticed your peg was cut off. What's that about?
I just started cello your just like my cello teacher I have a cello teacher teacher tho
Oh Khal Drogo! He's playing a cello!
I’m 14 and i’m aiming to start to learn the cello, with a teacher, in a few months. I want to enter a music college (you start college at the age of 16/17 in the UK) and the college I want to go to requires an audition where you play your instrument. I already play the guitar; i’ve had a facination with the cello and just orchestra instruments as a whole. Do you think ,with daily practice, I will be skilled enough to be accepted into the college? I was just wondering if 2 years of learning could give me a decent amount of chance and skill.
lxiee I would also like to enter a music college , and I know how to play guitar and piano. Do you think that will be enough?
Jon Ken I think you could pull it off! Most music colleges require decent knowledge in music theory aswell, so if you’re educated in that aspect then the possibility is higher. So I would definitely give it a shot and apply to the college you want to go to, especially if you want to do music as a career.
Oh my gosh justin!! 😍
I have just started playing by myself, no teacher. I find that when I first bow a string it's producing the note an octave up then slides down to the correct note. It happens relatively quickly in just a half a second or so. What am I doing wrong?
Push harder on the string with your left hand - it sounds like you're accidentally producing harmonics
I'm fourteen and I am finally getting lessons on how to play the cello! My mom played cello during her high school years and got a scholarship for cello to go to college. That inspired me and now I'm gonna play cello! Thank you Mr. Leopard!
