Here’s a major loophole in the 360’s security that greatly benefits Xenia: the _console_ determines whether an XBLA game is a demo or the full version, not the game itself. When you download an XBLA demo, it actually downloads the full game, and your system decides it should load the demo when you open it. That means you can download all the demos for all the XBLA games you want, copy them to your PC, and Xenia will see those demos as the full games. I’d hesitate to call this piracy because the system is designed to let you do that.

Huh. I was expecting you to just rip the game discs to ISOs. I didn't know you could do that with a usb drive and the 360 to play in Xenia. That's really cool. Thanks for the guide!

In that same config, for games that CTD or freeze on boot, change the GPU render API from Auto to Vulkan; or try Xenia Canary (forked version with new features for games that don't work in Xenia Master). DX12 has a lot of issues rendering things such as block shader mapping for shadows and texture mips. I have moved on to using Xenia Canary exclusively now, as it also has some major performance upgrades over the Master build.
I recently used Xenia to play Saints Row 1 start to finish. Fun time. I had to use the canary build because it gives better performance. To prevent it from crashing, I had to set the "protect_zero" flag to true. I imagine other games that crash near the beginning can be fixed with that setting as well.

What an awesome revelation. All the hard work I did to backup my games to isos back in the days was useful . I literally thought Id never get around to playing them ever as the 360 is in storage half a planet away and I couldn't be arsed to set it up even if I had it . I've got a tonne of game isos but only about 40 on my current backup drive, just installed Xenia and tried a few and they all worked so I cant wait to give them all a go to see which ones I want to play.

I've been keeping an eye on this for a couple of years. Dying to replay Lost Odyssey but there're a bunch of problems at the moment - audio cutting/corruption, the texture bug that looks to be in most games, and crashing randomly. But it's still amazing, most of the work looks done already. It's enough for me to drink in the nostalgia but definitely not a playthoughable state.
Great coverage, as always! Hoping that Xenia development continues forward as impressively, especially as far playability on something like the Steam Deck is concerned. I’m not picky-even a Proton-based solution (a la CEMU on the Steam Deck) is a-ok with me. I revisited the XBox 360 with the leak of the older XLBA Golden Eye remake a couple years ago now, and while I enjoy the N64 version it remakes, the XLBA version is a really great way to revisit the game with a more modern facelift.
Except Cemu actually has a native Linux version now.

@@EpicB gotcha. My sense is that Linux builds of CEMU are preliminary, so I was curious if your post indicated a good experience. As of the last time I checked, the best way to use CEMU on Steam Deck was still via the Windows build with Proton, hence my allusion. The performance is pretty remarkable, so remarkable that it’s easy to forget it’s not a native Linux program. In some respects, this begs the question of whether or not a native build is even necessary, though I’m personally always happy to have one.

This was awesome! I’ve been meaning to explore this emulator. Could you also cover how to set up Yuzu? I have it on windows but I’ve been having trouble getting it to work on Batocera even after following all the steps needed to get it on there. Awesome job!

I already showcased many 360 games with Xenia, including Shadow Complex, which can be fixed with a patch file, as long as you run the emulator's Canary version.
Forza Horizon runs and renders the ground floor outside the track finall? It used to be transparent, so trees would be flying in the air. Need to check it out! :)

Canary build is a gamechanger. Did you mention patches? you can get 720p and 60fps in games for example.
Hit F5(or was it F4) to reload textures, fixes most graphics issues especially texture related.
Also I've had success disabling "protect zero" and "break on unimplemented instruction" in settings.
If you need to make it an ISO anyway, could you use a computer with something like IMGBurn to create the ISO directly, or do you have to use the Xbox to create the GoD files and make the ISO from that?

One of the big fixes for Xenia is the config line:
gpu_allow_invalid_fetch_constants
Change this from false to true. Doesn't always work but it fixes quite a few black screens and glitches in the library, so it's worth a shot.

Yes it does. Just finished Gears 2 with my wife via my laptop output to the living room TV.

Does never work for me. The 2nd controller never gets recognized.

Hey russ. Can you do any tips on playing shooting arcade games that uses light gun. If maybe we can emulate them on new tv.
Lost odyssey is actually backwards compat on xbox one and series.
There are some xbox 360 that are not backwards compatible so great way to still play them. How do title updates work and DLC files with games? Or has anyone tried both of these yet?
I didn't actually know you could install discs to the hard drive! I only got my 360 S last year.

Wish I knew that you could download the disk to console back in the day. I would play Halo reach so much back in the day that I went through like 10 copy's.
I had same issue but lucky I got mine fixed by a legend I recommend you send request to, I'm very certain he gone fix it up 👌
Also note that a good handful of 360 games also have windows versions you can buy.
Since XB360 emulation is still hit and miss, I've never tried it - until I saw you running Forza Horizon no problem. I know your desktop is ok, but not a ridiculously overpriced powerhouse, so I've taken the plunge. Thanks for a great video.

@@Bee_Mavrick not a multiplatform game? Plenty of them do have a pc port. I really wanted to play Journey to the west, but thought it was a Ps3 exclusive. Until I found out it wasn't, bought it for peanuts and played it on a weak media center pc start to finish, no issues at all.

Hello I have a question if I want to play all yugioh tag force games but I couldn't find psp and the games for a good price is there an anbernic that have these games ? If yes, what is his name? And if not, do you know another way to play these games? I was thinking that if I didn't find it on anbernic I might buy a handheld pc (called ayaneo air) , but I also didn't search if it had these games or not because I was hoping the anbernic have them

So important to emulate 360 as the original hardware is so flaky, I went through 3 of them
I went through 5. All RRoD. All luckily covered by warranty. But after that I went to PS3 and never looked back.
I got two games required two disks like call of duty ghosts and halo 4, that has the game disk and install disk. Will those games work or will I run into issues?

I am shocked all this was possible without jailbreak. It's crazy how many things MS allows users to do on a vanilla 360.
I hope you read this because I can't find any information on it. How can I play games that offer content that is only accessible by playing online? I want to play a game called Too Human and there are drops that happen only when playing online and also more creatures when playing in online mode. I don't need to play with other people, I am fine playing solo. I just want to be able to access online content. Anything at all about custom servers, input in settings, anything that can create a mode or system setup to use online play? Any info on this is very much appreciated. I am using Too Human as an example but I would like to do this for any other games that might also have these same outcomes.
EDIT: Wanted to say I was able to get Too Human to work on my machine. It is my most nostalgic game from 360 era. Thank you for all the work you do!
Fable 2 would be a big one. As it's not available on PC for some reason. And it, along with the first game we're the best of the trilogy.
Burnout Revenge on 360 is such a gem but very sad that the music doesn't work.

i've got a prolem: i open a game in xenia, but once i'm in the menu, when i press A on the controller, it doesn't select any or start any game, it only select on "return to the arcade". what can i do?

You need both Canary and standard Xenia. Dead Rising plays fine on standard Xenia for example.

Still far from mature enough to even consider replacing a XB 360 but glad to see it's progressing at least.
Same thing for rpcs3 for PS3 but that is closer, especially for the games it run well.

Modern Vintage Gamer did a video of Xenia running on the deck. Seems to run pretty well.
You could pretty much play Red Dead and Forza Horizon 2 on it.
