Just received this fire starter today. Found it on Amazon for $10.50 with free shipping. Immediately opened the package, grabbed some dryer lent, went outside and with 1 strike I had fire. Pretty awesome. This is my 1st fire starter and I'm very satisfied. Although I saw the video from Shot Show with the magnesium fire starter. I really like the idea of the 5000° heat because I like to disappear to the woods even on rainy days. Still may buy it. Thanks again David for your awesome reviews.
Mike
Thanks man! We do our best... Glad you enjoy them! Have a great day! ~David
I bought this when it came out. 4 years later i still love it!
Thanks Dude! Really appreciate the encouragement. Was up till 3am doing post production and posting the video. Glad you enjoyed it! Later. ~David
I have had one of these for about a year. I think it's excellent for what it is intended to be - an all-in-one firemaking and survival tool. Yes, you can get more compact firesteels, but as a package I think this is a great product. The steel works every time even with damp tinder if you store some dry material in the handle (I use dryer lint). If you are a gram weenie or a minimalist type outdoors type you can easily find simpler and cheaper alternatives, but no one product is every going to suit everyone.
As always... my pleasure bro! Thanks for the encouragement... again! ~David
I got this as a Christmas present and I'm honestly very surprised. This damn fire steel is really nice. It's large, throws a great spark and holds tinder. I will buy one again when i wear this one out
Hi Mike... good comments. I came home from the show with 2 Survivor Firestarters so I will be testing it soon. Have a great day! ~David
Hello to you and your Vikings! Thanks for being a part of what we do.
Glad to help! Take care! ~David
this was the first gerber bear grylls tool i brought and i loved it. i used is all day in different scenarios and it works for lighting everything, even a small piece of paper or tissue i grabbed out of my pocket. it wrealy works for anything.
Will do... someone else also mentioned this today. I'll go back and put it in all the video descriptions this weekend. ~David
You guys do a great job with your videos. Very informative and professional. So much better than other sources on the web and CZcams... thanks!
Thank you for your concern. Good point!
I was tired of lighting fires with tiny firesteels. This one is so much easier to use. I filled the tinder compartment with a foot of waxed jute twine. I also changed the cord to Firecord for emergency tinder. Great video as always. I wish I could visit you to learn how to make the best videos.
Just got this fire starter today. Works great! Had a fire started within seconds.
thanks david i just got this as a gift and everything you said will help me using it
brilliant in-depth review. Thanks mate
I have one of them firestarters myself, and i must say: I really like the sparks it throws.
Thanks man! You are welcome! Have a great day! ~David
Awesome! Thanks for the info.
Awesome video my man !
Keep making awesome videos !
That tool looks nice to start fires and I already have two of the ones used by the Swedish Army and like them. I have the survival kit made by Gerber, their multi-tool and love them. The kit has the smaller multi-tool in it also.
Thanks for the comment. It's on the list. Stand by... ~David
Hey good review. It is so taxing to watch many of the long winded self important tool demos on youtube. But you are very professional and to the point. Thank you. I'm going out right now to get one of these.
A bronze Medal still gets you on the stage! Congratulations! ~David
David you really have great reviews
Keep up the work bro :)
I love your videos, usually before I buy something I look at your videos!
I just bought this and I love it! thanks
Thanks for all the great tips and information
Sounds cool!
I just got mine yesterday and it works very good I recommend it.
Awesome! Thanks!
This is what i have didnt know how great it was till i got it i love it i also brought some for my sons who are in boys scouts
You got it. My pleasure bro! ~David
Thanks man!
Nice video, I recently did a bushcraft course and took my bg striker. I was lighting fires before anyone else and also beat the instructor lighting feather sticks with this.
Firesteel is easy to use in the rain. Use birch bark scrapings, feathersticks, Horses hoof mushroom, coconut husk, etc. just find dry kindling after you ignite your tinder of choice, I’d recommend any pine/evergreen sticks that are dead, they have turpentine in them which is a natural fuel. You can find it on the side of the evergreen tree on a wound, the tree will use this to seal wounds and keep out insects or bacteria that are looking to eat away at the inside of the tree. For you, you can use it to treat your own wounds, or you can use it to make torches or glue. The glue tends to be brittle if you don’t add charcoal to it. People have been using it for thousands of years.
Every one asking for a vid about changing the paracord , I'm 11 and worked out how to do it so I think most other people can work it out also
Much easier to use with bigger paracord
Awesome review, I was just in the Army-Navy store looking at some fire starters. Once again you've made my choice easy. Thanks again Sir. I seriously think you should do a survival course. Can you review on what are the best things to carry or put into a bug out bag? Keep up the outstanding work. Ty
Your video is professionnal and PERFECT! Thank you!
david, thanks for the review it was helpful
thanks man this really helped me
THANK YOU.The tip about how one should pull the fire stone instead of push the striker, that is really good information.
Hey... just tried it. Yeah it fits in the very top of the bag. But remember, there is a fire steel rod in the kit and a striker... Hope this helps! ~David
Great advice, thank you
I need this for my summer camp vacation at Alaska man I need this
First, thank you for the video. You mentioned that you were going to or had done another video about how to change the length of paracord. Short of clicking every link and simply reading the descriptions for most; I cannot seem to find that link in the description section.
I love you your the best CZcamsr ever keep working hard love your work man your what keeps me going every day
Hey... Yeah, Sandy lost her fight over PA... We were pretty well prepared for a week or two with no power... Yes, many were effected though. Our prayers go out to them. Thank you for the well wishes. On magnesium vs. ferrocerium... Magnesium is more of a fuel. You normally shave some magnesium off into your tinder and then spark the magnesium with fire steel (ferrocerium) or flint... So military issue has both. The BG fire steel works fine alone with good tinder. Hope this helps. ~David
good review, i'll get it as a xmas present for my cousin. Thanks
Thanks for the review, it looks good..
Thanks man! ~David
I tried it alongside the Strikeforce, Spark-Lite and an ordinary ferro rod and striker from a BCB combat survival kit. The three were very close and very effective. The Bear Grylls one was hopeless on comparison. I repeated the tests with my wife as the tester and the same happened.
By the way the tinder pocket in the Bear Grylls one does not keep tinder dry. Glad I found out under test conditions. not in the wild.
Very informative and helpful videos. Thanks.
Nice review
The best fire starter item for wet freezing outdoors that I’ve ever owned was from Bear but I can’t find them anymore. It was a white hockey puck looking thing that absorbed lighter fluid land went in a cup. One mag strike and it lit blow it out and it was cool to the touch.
You mentioned a video on how to replace the cord with higher grade. Would you mind posting the link. Thanks.
Nice and informative video.
This is the best channel ever
Awesome cool!
Thanks for the comment. Yes, I have it... I personally don't like it... so I keep pushing the review back... But it is on the schedule. Take care. ~ David
Congratulations, you managed to find the only Gerber Bear Grylls product that doesn't suck.
Yeah mate, an absolutely terrible and inferior product line, just Gerber and Bear cashing in i suppose. Also this BG fire starter is a bit more bulky than it needs to be. Cheers
The hatchet and canteen are goud.
+Tamer Kassem (T900Kassem) Canteen is expensive and impractical, hatchet is made from an abysmal steel.
Tamer Kassem The steel in the hatchet, 3Cr13MoV, is a relatively decent steel at best. It was clearly chosen as an incredibly cheap steel which wouldn't be the worst choice out there but good enough to be an acceptable choice while still being cheap. There are many, many other steels that would be better. The Buck 106, although ridiculously coated in red powdercoat. is made of 5160, a steel that is a really high quality spring steel.
While it's true a lot of his gear is marked up price and bad quality, The compass, light etc are quite decent quality, and the ultimate pro is 9cr19MoV. But everything else in his series is too expensive for what you get. And I agree, this fire starter is excellent.
No real favorite of all time yet... different knives suit different needs and moods and scenarios for me. I guess my favorite will be the one I design (if I ever do) that will have the best of the best from every knife I love. Hope this helps! ~David
Do you feel that it would be improved if it had some shaveable magnesium as part of it too?
thanks!! very good video!
Thanks for showing the fire starter I have to of them good product thumbs up keep up the good work God bless
***** Why not spread the love of God?
***** He loves you, too. Even if you don't believe in him, Jesus gave up his life for you and your soul. I'd recommend reading John.
BAD Ben i agree with u, we should spread love of God
***** how do you know He doesnt exist?
Whats wrong with Jesus he loves you and you even me he's for real not that I love him It's because he loves me and u and u whow
Hi David. Should be a link to the best price on Amazon in this video's description. Take care. ~David
Good vid, thanks
It is so cool I use it all the time in scouts!
Only on my one it is really hard to open the tinder box thing.
i got this a few weeks ago and i have used it alot and i think it is a good release from gerber (bear grylls) i think its a good piece of kit !!!!
Hey... I have a series launching on sharpening tools and how to sharpen a knife. I would NOT buy the BG Sharpener... it has a small defect. Go for the Smiths Pocket Pal if you want a "pull" sharpener. Hope this helps! ~David
i already ordered it...... it is on the way:)
Great videos man. I can't seem to find your video about replacing the paracord. Would you mind linking it? Thanks.
Are you going to release the video on how to repalce it with a new peace of paracrod
Cool!
you have cool servival stuff
I've had this fire starter since Christmas and first I was quite unsure of how this fire starter can light fire all of you know how's the quality of the bear grylls Gerber products but I loved this one it's the perfect fire starter for me I've make it really abusive tests and it keeps surprising me I love the sheet and all of I its a very useful tool it's not as expensive as a light my fire army 2.0 or something like that but it really does what it's meant to do I'm sure when I will buy more of this fire starters in the future.
David thank you that you actually reply to prople
I bought one of these about two months ago at the Wally-China-Mart (WCM) in my area the night before a trip to Denver. When I opened it to check it out I noticed the case was cracked almost an inch, so I marked the defect with a silver sharpie. While in Denver I took it to a WCM for exchange, but they didn't have another one, so I took my cash back. Fast forward three weeks later, I was in Denver again and went into that same store where I returned the BROKEN & Clearly Marked BG Fire Starter and they had stapled the package back together and hung it back on the floor at FULL PRICE! You could see my Silver Arrow Mark pointing to the crack. I wanted to take a picture, but my phone battery just went out on me & that's why I was there (to get a new charger). I'm sure it was just a defective model, but to put it back on the shelf ?!? Really!?! Thanks for a great video, I might pick another one of these up someday!
Good Luck and Godspeed,
danofiremano
Very cool. Yes... we try to review and teach at the same time. Funny you mention a survival course... We are working on a video Series on How to Build a Bug Out Bag... Stand by bro! ~David
Yeah. Certainly a bit big to wear. It's won't get lost easily, that's for sure. Have a great day! ~ David
I think you should do a video on the new BG firestarter and maybe compare the two firestarters so we can get a better idea of their performance
do you know if it can fit into the ultimate survival bag horizontally?
Hey man, love your videos! By any chance, do you know how many strikes you will get out of this?
David great review, I think I might switch over to this instead of using my fire steel from Lightmyfire, I think having handles that would allow me to control how I throw sparks would be great. I was very disappointed with the lightmyfire fire steel, about a week ago while I was backpacking for a few days the lightmyfire fire steel rod fell out of the mini handle, this was my fire steel piece of equipment. I will be looking to replace it.
Lanyard replacement video?
Have you posted the link how to disassemble the whistle yet? Looks like people have been waiting 6 years for it. My cord is broke and dont know how to get the whistle apart without breaking it.
This is the only good Bear Grylls Tool, I own one and love one
hi david i was wondering how i could take off the wistle and i cant find the separate vidieo could you lpz upload it
The "rock" is called a ferrocerium rod. The idea behind a ferrocerium rod is that when scraped with a sharp piece of metal it removes tiny pieces from the rod that burn at very high temperatures (aka the sparks that come off the rod). Because of the fact that those "sparks" are really pieces of the rod that are being flaked off, over time the rod will wear down and stop working, so it will not last forever.
I have one of these fire strikers and wondered if you can buy spare Magnesium flints and what size to order up can anyone help me please. Yours sincerely Mr Nicol Rogers
Thank you.
Hey david i am just wondering will the fire rod after a few years of use will the fire rod be used finished or it will be there for life
Hey I love the video really informative! but where is the paracord lanyard video? I cant find it
The best BG tool for the coming days... is the one you have on you when you need it... :) ~David
Does the already used part of the black bar ignites as well as the black one?
going to have to get it
Hope it works tommorow teaching class been raing all day so I will see how It will work for me
I am getting this for christmas
... and for a while Gerber was the only company who sent us gear to review... so I have a back log of their stuff... I am always taking viewer suggestions on gear to review. There is ALWAYS going to be something better... so if you have stuff you think we should look at, let me know. I'll give it a fair shake also. So, stand by, my next review is the Cold Steel SRK, some more SOG stuff, you should see the SOG Creed, Cool Buck Gear, some series on knife sharpening, building a bug out bag...
