- Hello everyone! Brian here again. I'm coming close to finishing up my 2 year study on Gerber Gear. With a just a few more reviews up ahead I have to admit I'm kinda nervous on what's next. Anyways just liked I promised here is the review on the upgrades that I did to the Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Survival Knife and the Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Pro Knife. Please enjoy the vid! I DO NOT ENDORSE NOR PRAISE BEAR GRYLLS. MANY OF THE THINGS HE DOES WILL EITHER SERIOUSLY INJURE OR EVEN KILL YOU
Great review, Brian, well done! Very enjoyable. I was very interested to see your upgrades, a knife is such a personal thing. I'm looking forward to more reviews - subscribed! Best regards, Rob
Thanks Rob! More are their way mid December. I've been receiving and testing out more gear. Some I love and some I really don't know about. Either way I'll be posting some more vids soon!
I know I'm a bit late to the party here, but these mods look fantastic! I chose the Ultimate Pro as my first knife carefully after checking out a bunch of others, and was just as skeptical about the BG brand as many others... But it makes me feel vindicated seeing how many people who actually *use* the knife speak to its quality. Thanks for the great ideas!
I personally removed the velcro as soon as I got the knife as I hated the idea of it. I went to a local sewing shop and picked up a set of heavy duty snap clasps and sewed them back on in place of the velcro. Had it for about a year now and it hasn't let me down yet. Great video by the way and thanks for the reviews.
Excellent review...
... thanks!
Hey Brian, I'm sitting at my computer at 2 AM. Can't sleep, so I decide to watch your video. I'm not particularly a BG fan, but I must say . . . you were very easy to listen to. Good job, my friend.
I love the upgrades. Especially the paracord bracelets. Awesome!
Thanks! You outta check out the latest upgrades to these knives. I keep changing them up.
I don't think that you should have apologized! If someone doesn't like the way that you make videos so he doesn't have to watch them!
You are doing great! I really like your videos and I will keep watching them.
Thanks and please continue with your great work
Hey thanks for the comment. That meant a lot! I'll continue making more videos. Looks like next year will be a video mix of Gerber and Cold Steel. :)
this is cool to see. i bought my original immediately after its release, ive always thought that i was the only person that modded the crap out of mine.
Every thing that Gerber missed with the ultimate knife they nailed with the ultimate pro knife. Full tang, better steel, no serrations, better whistle, and totally upgraded the sheath, it is the ultimate survival knife considering there's no competition that offers a complete survival system with the quality of this product. I've seen the Les stroud camillus knife line and it isn't any better than Gerbers. Thanks for your review.
Yeah, Gerber did a lot better on the ultimate pro, and Camillus and Les stroud need to work on the Les stroud knives.
Your English is fine by the way. I'm from UK and it's all clear from here. Good review as usual. I have the Ultimate Pro and find it a superb knife. Some reviews say the fire steel takes some getting out. Well you have a knife just to lift it out. It takes a couple of seconds.
Some say the knife ii stiff to get out. Well surely that's the point. It does not come out easily. The knife locks into the sheath. If you take a tumble down a rocky slope the knife won't get lost in the brush.
Hey i just got the ultimate pro from Menards online it was on sale for $45 US. LOVE the knife but there shipping was terrible! I ordered this knife last Thursday and it was the following Friday (in the next week) . I'am going to put these mods on the knife.
Thanks for the vid Brian!
Awsome rigs, I really love the look of the bracelet clasp. I honestly think people are way to serious when it comes to these survival knives. From what I have seen they work just fine and at least you get a sheath that has purpose, other then the companies throwing in some piece of junk excuse of one. You honesty is good quality character, I to have problems making videos, my mind has all the right things planned out tell I hit the record button LOL. I really like the new LMF blades by gerber , its nice not having the brite orange BG handles and look more tactical. Good review man.
Brian, just saw this video for the first time. You are very well spoken. Very succinct. Your review is short, sweet and to the point. It is edited flawlessly. One of the best reviews I've ever seen. You made the reviewed item(s) the star. I am disappointed with reviewers who inject themselves into the program and make themselves the star. It's about the product. Your command of English is flawless. I noticed no speech impediments. Multiple takes simply means that you are a perfectionist. I have great respect for that. I think that people who offer criticism that is not constructive have jealousy/insecurity/self-respect/who-knows-what issues. Keep up the good work. Your new fan.
Thank you very much for the comment! I try very hard to make my videos straight to the point with little to no flashiness. I've often noticed myself that when there's too much flash it often drives the viewer to look at something else. And thank you for the pep comments. Languages are difficult as is.
Awesome rig. Awesome video. You kept my attention the whole time and I learned some clever stuff. Thank you.
Hey thanks! I know my vids don't have all the flashy bits in them. I just try to get to the points. :)
Fine review Benji. I also bought the BG survival, then ,when it came out, the Ultimate. I favor the Ultimate too.
I like your modification suggestions and will try them.
I also have a Kershaw EDC and like the CRKT brand as you mentioned doing work on their lines.
Steven Lambert literally just ordered the Ultimate for $37 I figured it was an offer that was too good to pass but now I am thinking I should have went for the pro for a little more expense. Are the differences In Blade quality and sheath that great? Thanks...
Nice quality vid awesome upgrades and great content 5/5 stars!
Hey thanks for the comment! :)
Hi Brian, this is the first video I have seen from you. Great work. I like your presentation. Considering the difficulties you mentioned I think this is awesome. I have a Bear Grylls Ultimate Pro, and love the knife except for the bright orange gaudiness, lol. I will take on some of your improvements, I think they are great, thanks also to the guy you mentioned it was not your idea. Best wishes, keep pushing out great video's. Thanks.
+Tony M Thanks Tony! I always give credit where it's due. I often try out ideas I see on YT and see if they work for me or anyone who's having similar issues or needs.
Go to a Shoe/Leather Repair Shop and they'll put you in a heavy duty snap on the Velcro straps for a couple of bucks. Do all your sheaths with Velcro this way. Headache solved.
I just to the Survival Knife ;). I love it I want to do those nice small upgrades that you did to yours looks awesome!!! Don't worry your videos are great!!!
I appreciate your dedication to good production values with your videos. I detected none of the issues you stated at the end...thought you were a native English speaker.)))
Paracord. Paracord everywhere! ;)
Great ideas, I think I might do some of those to mine. I had already put the whistle on the flint, didn't think about securing the knife with a clasp. I dont like the velcro if ai need to use it, normally just run it behind my knife like yours, but without another keeper.
Thanks for the info. Well done.
I think using the paircord for the strap is an even better ideal because you can use it as rope if needed
Hey thank you very much for the kind words and you hit all the points well on the head. Cheers to you and keep having fun outdoors! :)
Excellent knives, when my two Ontario knives wear out I will consider these as a replacement. Thanks for the review.
No problem!
The knives look new, which is a sign that you haven’t been in the woods longer than 10 minutes, so it doesn’t matter for you if a knife is bad or not
You do realize this review was made back in 2013 right? Also I use the Strongarm when I'm trekking through the wilderness but since it's obvious that you only looked at this one review and made a snap judgement about someone you don't know or know anything about the subject I'm guessing that you're an ignorant troll with only 2 subscribers which is a sign that you're only seeking attention. Good bye.
I apologize if i was rude, I wasn’t having a very good day. Despite my slight dislike for those Ultimate Survival Knives, the Gerber Strongarm is an excellent choice! Sorry again for the comment , I’m not an avid outdoorsman myself, just an enthusiast...
Great video! And great narration. The price of the ultimate non serrated have dropped to around $50. I may get one.
Nice I like what you did with the knife looks good
You're doing great for your speak issues, strong work, keep up the great job.
Dean Nuebling Thanks! I really appreciate that very much!
sum nice lil mods, great vid
+Bushybecky Smith Thank you! :)
Hey man your video review is great. One of my best friends has ADHD but he is very successful in life and makes a lot of money as an entrepreneur. Like you having the condition makes him try much harder and he sweats the details which makes him successful. This was one of the first knives I got.. It's so gaudy that I am embarrassed to carry it in the woods. I gave it away to a buddy. I like carrying the Bark River Bravo and the TOPs BOB knife along with a GFB axe and a saw. For all around good survival knife for under 100 bucks, the BK2 is probably your best bet. Keep up the good work.. and I subed
Hey thanks for comment. Yeah this knife isn't for everyone that's for sure. I myself covered the massive BG logo on the sides. You can see that on a later upgrade review Gerber VS Gerber vid. The BK2...Ol Becky. Yeah I would love to own that knife myself. This year I'll be doing side by side comparisons on some blades. Maybe if I'm lucky I'll get my hands on a Becky. Thanks for subbing! :)
Appreciate the video.. good job to. I just bought one on sale for $32.00.... If your only complaints are the Velcro strap and the firesteel concern I'm thinking I'm going to love mine. Good fixes with useful materials...nice job!!
Thanks! Which knife did you get?
Great review, I've beat the CRAP outta both of my BG's and they are still holding up wonderfully. And for English not being your first language, I couldn't even tell; don't listen to ignorant pricks man, keep it coming!
Dan Williams uu
I just wanted to say as someone that sutters slightly myself, and has been known to be a little less than focused (ooo, a squirrel!) I am quite impressed with your video. As for English not being your first language... holy hell I couldn't tell!
Thank you so much for that comment! I've been working on my accent since I was in my early 20's. Now at 37 I'm still working on it :) As for my stutter or there lack of I can thank my speech instructor for that :D
Good job Brian!
Thanks! I'm going to be doing a follow up on the BG Pro soon and just as I thought. It's still exceeded my expectations and the upgrades helped a lot to making this happen.
Very good ideas. Thank you very much
Sounds good! It cool and aligned two。
Man, english isn't your first language? I sure sounds like it. I must say that is pretty decent speech. And thanks for the ideas, I am sure going to use that paracord trick!!
@Roberto Oh wow, that was 6 years ago. Cheers mate
Amazing. Well done.
Thanks mate youve given me a couple of good ideas
My pleasure. One my latest videos is a total update thus far on these blades. Check it out! I compare them to the Gerber Prodigy! Thanks for the comment!
Nice review. They might not be the highest quality but for the price they make a good emergency blade/kit to keep in your vehicle. You know...just in case👍🏻
Good comparison. I was wondering whether it was worth getting the pro or not. Thanks - good detail.
Good thorough video! I personally put my money into TOPS for good survival knives. cheers!
A suggestion for the velcro strap you can use it as Molly attachments
GOOD ON YA BRIAN, NICE INFORMAITVE VIDS AS USUAL, Oi! WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND
Thanks! More vids to come as soon as I'm done moving! :)
Excellent idea!
Nice video review. you have a new sub.
i too hate the velco... nice upgrade to the kit. awesome ideas !
Thanks! Like everything else I keep changing and evolving myself and what I use in the wilderness. :)
I dislike these products, but your upgrades and video was very good.
Thanks! I was always taught if you have something you don't quite like, make it better by making it yours.
bonjour pourriez vous me donner le lien pour acheter ces couteaux en vous remerciant
thank you, great review
You're very welcome and thank you for the comment!
awesome review. One thing, how did you or how do you fasten your knife to your side? What kind of adapter did you make? Tks
great video!
I have. I was told that they love the paracord wrap idea.
thanks for the videos. I have the ultimate pro knife too. impressive knife, sharp but wasnt razor sharp tho (I work with knives for a living) I soon got it razor sharp. Ive borrowed the paracord buckle idea, looks really nice. But instead of a webbing strap like you have ive attatched a kydex belt loop using a knot of paracord . Works a treat.
Nice! Yeah I was using whatever I had laying around the house! I always like hearing about and checking out knife mods myself. Keep it up and thanks for the comment!
I brought my BG on many adventures, it has done more than meet expectations. I have had it sense they first came out and I only needed to sharpen it once outside of the sheath.
It works absolutely well. The only thing I don't really like is the serration on the blade.
Another thing I would like to add. The sharpening block on the rear of the sheath has kept my backcountry axe in great condition. I have not needed to buy a separate sharpener as the one on the sheath does very well.
Also with what you have done adding the paracord is a really nice addition. Smart
Very good review mate,I love the ultimate pro knife and I do a lot of hunting and camping it's been very good and not let me down, yes it has bear grylls all over it but I don't mind one bit I think he does a lot of things we could all learn from, the knife is just as good as some I have paid five times more money for and if not better, this knife I think has a hard time from some but I think they just love complaining as there's nothing wrong with it 100 % FACT.
Thanks for the comment! Yeah I'm pretty sure if the BG logo wasn't on it, it wouldn't get such hatred aimed towards it.
Good solution for the velcro!
Done my knife like yours with the help of your great ideas great video thanks ash
Excellent Video clip! Apologies for chiming in, I am interested in your thoughts. Have you thought about - Lammywalness Your Dream Guide (Sure I saw it on Google)? It is a great one off guide for discovering how to get a a FREE Edt multitool survival tool minus the hard work. Ive heard some super things about it and my mate after a lifetime of fighting got cool success with it.
Hey thanks for the comment! It is much appreciated! :)
Hi Brian ! Congratulations for informative video . It’s to the point and short . I have a doubt . Will there be quality concern as pro seems like Make in China . And rest all like prodigy and LMF|| are Make of USA .
Will the quality be same ? Please guide . Thanks
U SAID YOU HAVE A STUDDERING PROBLEM AND THAT UR FIRST LANGUAGE IS NOT ENGLISH, WELL JUST LET ME SAY YOU ARE DOING A GREAT GREAT JOB MY FRIEND AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. I will be copying some of what u have shown on your vids. Tks and good luck ion the future.
Great info in your vid and comments! Thanks to you I know I have 3rd gen ultimate. On sale for 30 bucks was a good deal... I would not pay more than 40. It's a fine knife and I like the orange and could care less what letters it has on it. It still dulls if the edge comes in contact with inside of sheath so I have to be careful. Steel needs frequent attention but it does the job. I would like to get the Pro but 70 is waaaay to high so I pass for now.
Yeah I totally agree about the prices and the blade's steel and I'm happy to hear that my vids are actually helping people like you! I have more planned and they will be uploaded shortly! :)
I don't give a crap about names or brands either. The Camilus or Gerber knives are all functional and you can get them on sale at bargain prices. I never see the Ka-Bar, Becker, Essee, Cold Steel, etc., knives as cheap as Gerber or some of the Schrade knives. I am sure there are buyers who think a blade under $100 is crap or under $300 depending on their viewpoint. I don't see a knife as a status symbol and ANY company can and does put out a defective piece of crap every now and then. Names, brands and slogans are just marketing tools.
MasterK9Trainer
Well said!
I have had the original ultimate survival knife for 3 years and after using the fire steel countless time and it has never came out if the sheath but I do like the pro knife more.
Will you make a video on how you did the add ons (tied, connected) the fire starter, the clip skinny orange rope as replacement for the velcro
thanks for posting
Will do!!!
I had this knife but within a week snapped the tip off. I was testing it out doing basic "survival tasks" in my back yard and it snapped quite easily. Obviously you get what you pay for but I was quite disappointed. Hopefully the new version is a little stronger.
Hey Brian, quick question: How long is the paracord bracelet you use to secure the blade? Thanks for doing this review. I've been debating for weeks over which model to get.
+Travis Gallegos I used about 8 ft of paracord on the original and about 9 ft for the Pro. As for the sheaths I just kinda wrapped em up. One can always use more cordage. Thanks!
Hey thanks for the comment!
Thanks for the comment! As time goes by I still try to see what does and what doesn't work and finally adapt.
Thanks, by the way I have been a subscriber for months
Thank you Sir
nice. thanks
i really enjoy your videos, keep em coming. and i can't notice anything wrong with your speach, and if English isnt your first language, i dont think anyone could tell.
Thanks! I'll still add onto it when I find a reason. As for a shout out, PM me on why you'd like one :)
I give shout outs to those who give very good suggestions and or when I implement those suggestions into my Gerbers. Perhaps you can give me a suggestion for CRKT as I found out that they are next on my reviews coming in January.
enjoy watching the your vids but was wondering if you can use the pro sheath with the ultimate knife .
I tried and unfortunately you cannot. The new blade was redesigned from pommel up.
Hi, Brian...what do you think of the schrade schf9 extreme survival knife?
How long is the para cord bracelet that you used?
Damn, awesome review. Answered all my questions i had on the both knives! Whatever i searched about gerber i always end up on ur videos :D
(Dunno if this comment work, death to google+)
HAHA! Thanks! Many more Gerber reviews will be coming up shortly. Even some comparisons to competing blades. You can also PM me if you like to know more. I try to keep em short but go into further detail when asked. :D
Sounds awesome! Nah, you answered every question i had! Pretty mutch order one of the "pro" knife right after i saw your review! Thanks. :D
Nice! I'm sure you'll love it!
Excellent review. Is the paracord bracelet the standard paracord bracelet size? or is it shorter?
You measure to your wrist. Typically I like to have about 10 feet of pararcord to make bracelets for the wrist and about 7 feet to make bracelets for the sheaths. But always measure twice and cut once.
What did you add for the belt loop on the Ultimate Survival Knife (the first knife you reviewed? I couldn't make it out based on what was shown on screen. It looks like a buckle of some sort
mrq1701 It was part of a cargo strap. I used what I had laying around. Still works great to this day.
You should consider replacing that belt buckle strap (appears to be an old ratchet strap perhaps?) with a paracord strap. You already have the paracord, it adds to the cordage and would be easy enough to do. A one piece design with a loop and a drop to the knife similar to the bracelet, but without the buckle. Good video. I enjoyed seeing your mods.
Thanks for the comment and excellent suggestion! I'm always learning and adapting! :)
I mentioned the sharpener on a solo BG Pro video. It's most likely on the before use video.
The new BG Ultimate Survival knife has been redesigned to the point they are only the same in looks only. I have the new BG knife and it's a solid performer. It's a really good knife. I have lots of knives and the new BG knife is one of my favorites. Don't like bright colors dye it black. Mine looks awesome in black.
How would I contact Gerber to get a sheath for my Gerber bear grylls....i like the. Fire starter up & the sharpening prong compared to the stone one
Unfortunately they don't since both blades while looking similar in some ways, the two are totally different. But if you do what I did with the sheath you might end up liking it more.
Hey I have a question for ya, does the new pro fit in the old sheath or is it to big?
I know people hate the old design but honestly I like it especially the color, the black with dark orange is much better then the new orange that fades over time from what I can tell. Or can the plastic inserts be switched if it doesn't fit?
Nope. Neither blade fits in each other's sheath. However the Prodigy fits in the BG Ultimate sheath as well as the LMF 2 sheath. Nothing but the BG Ultimate Pro fits in the sheath.
Cool thanks for the answer,
I tell ya , shopping for a good all around bushcraft/survival knife is a pain especially if your looking for the whole package "good knife and good sheath". The Lmf is awesome but none of them have a full straight edge, that's why IMO the new pro BG is so much better cause of that very thing.
The fire steel on the ultimate knife never comes out only if you make it. I don't know why it comes out, but my friends one fell out when we went on a 2 day hike and when we were coming up his thingy fell out and we couldn't find it but mine didn't come out and I was jumping around so much. Sorry this comment is so long.
You should have talked about the sharpener at the back inside of the black one, and show how to use it xD
Nice!
Hey how long should the "bracelet" be? I have the ultimate pro knife and want to do something similar
As well how much paracord do you need to make that and what size of buckle?
And what is this blue "belt upgrade" you have on it?
The bracelet I made was made of 7 feet of paracord. You can use any size buckle. And as for the blue belt upgrade that came off a kayak strap. In short I used what I had on hand and improvised.
Epic thanks
As soon as my next and my "almost last" Gerber arrives I'll testing that out, modding it and then I'll post something.
I am not a fan of partially serated knives and would not buy the first one, but would buy the second one. You have made many changes to the sheaths of both knives and I hope it works fine for you.
paracourt does the trick very wel :) what is your first language? great review, thanks!
My first language is Japanese :) どうもありがとう!
If you check the review from Ultimate Survival Tips, my comment shows what you can stuff in and around that great knife.
Love Gerber:-)
So wild you suggest the pro to someone on a budget or just getting into knifes? Because I have my eye set one the pro but I like the SOG Seal Team Elite just only have the money for the pro not the elite yet.
I would say you can get either and you would not be displeased. As a knife collector, tester and user I would get both but seeing that you're on a budget and if you need a knife now, then I would say get the Gerber BG Pro first and use that as your first knife platform to build on. But if your heart is set on the SOG, then save up your money and get that one. I've used the SOG before on many occasions and in my opinion that too is quite a formidable knife. Eventually I'm going to do another review on the BG Pro after the constant battering I put it through. Until that vid is made let's just say I put it through hell and then some and the blade has held up exceptionally well.
I like the pro version more but I Like the sharpening stone on the original knife sheath, can you put the pro knife in the original knifes sheath? Or any way to mod the stone into the new sheath?
Unfortunately there is no way to fit the new Pro into the Ultimate's sheath. As for the sharpening stone there is no known way to adapt that to the new sheath that I'm aware of. However with that being said I have to say that I like the carbide sharpener better but one can never beat a good sharpening stone or sharpening rod. :)
Where did you get them ?...and how did you drop it in the fire
The pommel and the ferro-rod are the only good things about the original BG Survival knife. I've given mine away I disliked it so much! The Pro looks o.k., being full tang an all, but I've never handled one. I like gear where the maker tells you exactly what it's made of.
