  • For the vast majority of guitar players, Dumble amps are unobtainable. The combination of increasing rarity and six-figure pricing make it nearly impossible for you and I to purchase one of these legendary amps. However, there are a number of Dumble-modified amps in existence that deliver on the Dumble sound at a fraction of the cost.
    Today, we have the privilege of playing through a Dumble-modified Vibrolux Reverb (thanks to our friends at Techno Empire). This is not your father's silver face Fender. With its plethora of added features, its masterfully voiced clean and dirty channels, and its affordability when compared to other Dumble amps, this is the perfect route to take if you want to get into the Dumble club without spending hundreds of thousands of dollars.

      I can’t claim credit for that. The story goes that in the very early days when they were a touring band (with Baxter and Dias on guitars) Fagen and Becker would get their hard-drinking tour bus driver Mr Jerome Aniton to introduce them before each show. Aniton, always drunk as a skunk, literally did not understand it was a band and thought that Donald Fagen was “Mr Stevie Dan”.

    They are all different the ultra/rockfonic I own has alot more low end but its a bassman platform with mid added on back . Positive Sustain on clean channel and when I got the amp back in 2013 it was far more aggressive on lead side but a glass adjustment as well using a Brown Box solved that as well the proper Caps which brought all the filters back to life.. I record before and after to know where it was and if its better and soon as the great caps were in it I had to drop the bass to 1 or 2 maybe not past 2.5 with Treble and Mids up and I dime the clean side and back the lead side down a bit Volume wise. Its interesting to not be lacking in the clean volume department and if 50 isnt enough you can do the Landau thing ISO box tap off main amp into bigger amp. Speaking of that I found a 150 watt amp that has the same transformers as Ejs 005 or SRVS 006 and the same tubes GE 6550 chrome base tubes.. So when you introduce line level into that 150 on a open back 4x12 with EV 12s , then boost the gain to the bigger amp.... the 2nd amp is BIGGER clearly then the 50 watt amp TADA but you set the 2nd amp at 2.5 volume and the eq flat at first then get out in front of that and get a feel for that and adjust EQ and go.. All you hear is the Dumble but the IRON AND GLASS AND SPEAKERS is 150 watts with 4 ev 12 l speakers but open back cab.. So think Todd Sharpe Dumble 150 watts with SSS IRON and Tubes and more of a MEGA PLX lead . So it does the POSITIVE CLEAN SUSTAIN and the Lead.
    and by using the 2 channel clean and lead then any other lead is on the clean side say blues driver or tube screamer fuzz combinations flanger vibe tremolo all on clean side
    but still able to bring in the D LEAD or Combine all on AB Y switch.. Because the lead from the clean side is brighter more so SSS sounding then ODS or Mega Plx which is Dumbles take on the better Plexi. The mega Plx was not 50 watts though It was made with Studio work in mind to begin with not stadium amps all im suggesting is when I did this the sound was closer to SSS and original STEVIE OR EJ because thats the transformers and tubes and speakers used for the bigger amps. That rig could make people cower in the cotton bowl or billy bobs in Texas which is A GIANT CLUB ....But right about 3 on volume is about all one can handle and add fuzz flanger all that its gets real large...im mostly after dry sound though for IR CAPTURE. those amps are not existent in axe fx or modelers yet not the original setup for SSS and you clearly hear the massive difference and feel it I had that on 3 in a 1300 sq ft building and was at the other end and it was LOUD about perfect but LOUD So if you plug both amps into brown box and lowered power by 30 % its going to run cooler and sound better.. then you can lower power without re bias the amp and safely find other sweet spots and voltages. Does the owner know that potential buyers would want to see this amp inside out is this one smurfed or epoxied inside ? mine isnt. No smurf in my Dumble so its fully serviceable thus the correct caps wonder when the last time this amp had a cap job.....? I know the controls sure react much more sensitive its all touch at that point...

  • @anthonypanneton923
    @anthonypanneton923 Před 10 měsíci +1

    Very cool. I don't know what he did in there, but the 6-position rotary switch thing seemed to be just a variable gain with 6 detent positions, rather than a pot.
    Back in the early '90s I started modifying my own Silver-face Fender amps (and one or two black-face models - I know, that's probably a crime in some states...). It was less expensive than buying something new, and I could make it sound exactly how I wanted it to sound. I used to look for used silver-face Bandmaster heads to modify, because they were just right. I still have two or three down in the basement. My usual trick was to make them really close to a Marshall 50. I usually added a master volume pot after the tone stack, and on several I had the input go (internally) to both a "bright" and a "normal" first pre-amp stage, with separate volume pots for each. They sounded great. Old Traynor YBA-1 heads were also good for modding. Of course, back 30+ years ago, the raw materials (used silver-face heads) were a lot less expensive than they are today.

      I think it's a negative feedback control from what the original owner had indicated but I didn't look inside to verify or investigate.

    • @anthonypanneton923
      @anthonypanneton923 Před 10 měsíci

      @@VertexEffectsInc ah-ha! that makes sense. which explains why the tone didn't really change. varying the negative feedback on the power tubes is usually what's happening with a presense knob, except the presense only changes the high-end feedback - to open up high-end response from the power stage. a full range negative feedback control would basically act as a regulator or governor on how full-out the power stage runs. I've done a similar thing to a Chinese tube amp, but to increase the negative feedback and put the brakes on the power stage a little bit more than in the original design - to keep those Chinese power tubes operating longer...
      Everything is a trade-off. Unless you can afford a Dumbles or a Dumble-modded Vibrolux...

    • @VertexEffectsInc
      @VertexEffectsInc  Před 10 měsíci +5

      Most Dumble owners aren't anxious to hear how their $200K amp compares to a $2000 amp (or less). They typically don't want to provide an opportunity to devalue their amp or call into question whether it's a "good one" or a "dog". It can affect the price when they go to sell it if there is any negative press surrounding that particular serial number. However, I think it would be a good idea and a cool video to maybe bring some enthusiasts back to earth.

      At $50 an hour (very reasonable for an experienced professional), imagining parts at 1/4 total cost ($500 in your case, including things like glues, utility costs, etc) that would allow 30 hours for the builder to communicate with you, place the order, build and paint, package and ship your item.
      That doesn’t take into account R&D, sourcing parts, their insurance and staffing costs, etc.
      I understand that paying $42k for an old piece of gear isn’t everyone’s thing (certainly not mine), but I’m today’s economy buying a new amp or guitar built locally for $2k means they’re probably losing money ok it or don’t know what they’re doing.

      Respectfully, I think you're misrepresenting what was said in the video and taking some liberties with the intent of the video to scaffold a straw man. Nowhere in the video is it said that this is a reasonable price for an amp in general. The only comparison that is given for its affordability is relative to other Dumble amplifiers that can go upwards for $240,000. Furthermore, it is a true statement for those interested in Dumble amps, this is the most affordable way to get your foot in the door if having a real deal Dumble is the goal. The video makes no attempt to dispute that good (or even great) tones can be had and achieved for far less money - so I'm not sure how you could construe this as an insult unless you were triggered prematurely and saw "red" after on the revelation of the price and went on autopilot as to the context and just heard what you wanted to and made an argument against something that's not presented in the video. If you've spent any time on the channel you'll see that we frequently showcase high quality budget and sleeper amps like the 1980's Rivera Fender amps, that are well built, handwired, feature rich, and well below $800 in many cases.

I play Josie in a band and play a strat on 5th position with a semi clean sound then turn up the guitar for the solo. I have tried to play it with an LP on the neck position and that works also. For this cleanish type sound I use a Carr Rambler, Brownie Blue side, and Koko boost. This is all for lower volumes and I turn the guitar volume way down so that I have a lot of headroom.

      With any Dumble, it's a custom amp - modified or not. The player this was built for clearly liked a lot of low end. So much so, there's a "SUB" knob on the amp. We're trying to play it with more typical "Dumble" style sounds that are in the canonized songs you might have heard a Dumble on with some other clean/dirty examples mixed it. I think for a more traditional Dumble sound the ODS #0022 that we profiled a few weeks ago in a video is closer to that classic ODS sound compared to this amp.

I hope now you know what I have been trying to tell you for a few years now how the Dumble has this very high clean headroom midrange compression that sustains the notes for a very long time

    I currently own an early 70’s Silverface Fender Twin Reverb, a Soldano Lucky 13 from 2000, and a 2014 Marshall Bluesbreaker Reissue. My guitars consist of a 32 year old Fender ‘62 Reissue Strat, a Gibson 335 from 2003, and a 2020 Fender Robin Trower Custom Shop Strat. I’m very happy and lucky to own this gear. All my amps & guitars (and even pedals), don’t come close to $45K . If I think about all the great gear you can get for under $20K, why would you spend so much money on 1 amplifier? The thought is insane to me, but then again, I’m not rich.

      I understand that it’s market price, but by “folks,” I assume you’re referring to Robben Ford, Larry Carlton, Sonny Landreth, John Mayer, etc. We commoners can’t invest that kind of dough in 1 amp when we’re trying to pay a mortgage, a car note, feed a family and so on. I guess even if I had that type of cash to throw around, I would spread it around on multiple pieces of gear - just my opinion.

    I love Mason and his knowledge, but he’s talking about this amps $45k price tag like the average player can just drop that at their local Walmart at great is kind of funny. $45k is definitely more attainable than almost $300k, but not practical for 95% of players out there. I’m not arguing worth, as components and time, years of practice and improve on skill, as well as the value and prominence the brand dumble has built is definitely worth that price. If it wasn’t people wouldn’t be paying that much for them. The value is definitely there, but how much of us can practically afford that value is a different question.
    With that being said. Thank you Mason for sharing your access to amazing gear and amazing players that most of us would be robbed of if you were not gracious enough to do so through video format. 🙏🏽

    Understanding that a high price revolves around the fact that it was done by dumble. It does not mean that the circuit is worth that but the rarity of the item is worth that. Other dumb will amplifier show for hundreds of thousands of dollars. And are owned by elite musicians who make millions of dollars a year. Everything is relative. However any good electronics engineer could reverse engineer what Dumble did to this or any other amplifier. The question is are the circuits available to do it? Are the tubes available to do it? I believe that we have seen very close for about $250. The steel string supreme SRV IS A MUCH MORE AFFORDABLE VIABLE OPTION FOR THE MASSES. However there are good engineers in electronics today who could reverse engineer that amplifier or any Dumble amplifier and create very similar or exact tones of any given amplifier. We know this is true because the Chinese have brilliant engineers duplicating everything that we create now. However inferior parts are going to be an issue. With very little manufacturing being done in countries outside of China we are going to be subject to cheap cheap cheap duplication of parts. This is a classic example of the old parts were built better. Not cheaper because that is the goal of many people who duplicate parts but parts that are high quality potentiometers Rio stats the mounts for the boards the actual boards that tubes are mounted to right down to the cabinet that the amp is made with and the driver being used to duplicate the sound. Why do some speakers sound better it is the quality of the parts it is the design of the cone it is everything to the way the sound is reproduced. Speaker manufacturing has come a long way. One thing that concerns me is we are celebrating the old we do this a lot because the parts are not available to recreate it in the same manner. However parts can be recreated and made in a high quality environment. How much would a modern amplifier reversed engineer be worth if you're going to say $2,000 I have to say you're wrong $2,000 of today's money is very little money basically a week's pay The amplifiers that you're looking at sold for about 2 months pay back when they were developed. Depending on your income some things are out of reach. Some people can't afford a spark amplifier which will give you tones that are very close to anything on the market. Of course it is not something you would take on stage and play professionally. However there are people who are doing it. There are lots of jam sessions with a bunch of guys sitting around with spark amplifiers or boss amplifiers. Emulators give you a close tone for not a lot of money you see there is an answer for everyone but big money is made by making things affordable to the masses. If any of you young people have taken an economics class or macroeconomics or microeconomics you would understand this type of theory. I learn these theories a long time ago from a guy named zig ziglar. Yes his name is not a joke. go look up old videos by him and his theories on marketing and you will understand not only did he teach people how to sell he taught people the value of the things they were selling. We used to say in the record industry and in the music industry speaker manufacturers and other things the best for less. There were always elite things that the masses couldn't afford but what gave the closest emulation of that that was the one that sold the most. I would like to see a young manufacturer come along and make all the components or have them made in a quality environment. A quality environment outside of China.
