/ @j.e.e
Your ability to speak so many languages so well and being humble while doing it rather than trying to show off that you know the language really impresses me. I lived in Kraków in Poland for a year in 2020 during the pandemic and really made an effort to learn Polish and fell in love with the language but definitely cannot speak it like you can with your Russian, French and Spanish. I was in Latvia for a month at the beginning of this year visiting mainly Riga and Sigulda, I loved the country a lot. Thanks for this video, allowing me to relive Riga in the summer.
Hello mate,
Such a nice comment... I am impressed that you made the effort and took advantage of the opportunity to learn another language!!!
So few English natives do, because it is so easy for us to function without another language when travelling.
Keep the effort up my friend and you will get better and better fast.
I hope you liked Riga in the summer as it is so different in the winter.
All the best mate👌👍
Rīga is probably my most favourite city, it is such a nice place
I agree mate👍👍👍
Justin great video, I see clarifying comments about 1905 wont add to that. About Latvian Riflemen they were not what I would call guns for hire. They were originally formed under the Russian Imperial government. The Duma authorized the formation of them when in WWI. Germany had advanced the front to Jelgava and split Latvia in half. They allowed Latvian battalions to be organized under Latvian command partially because the Duma were convinced that the Latvians would fight stronger for their homeland then troops from other lands. My grandfather was one of them and volunteered at the age of 17. They stopped the advance of the front. When the Russian Imperial army collapsed Lenin recruited them. My grandfather said few riflemen believed Lenin but their choice was to go back to the Russian Imperialist or to the boot of the Germans (remember 1905) . Since Lenin was at least a promise of neither of those many rifles went with Lenin hoping to eventually come back to Latvia and many did. Other Rifles such as my Grandfather remained in Latvia and joined the Latvian national army. They site of the memorial is where they held the bridge against the the Mercenary army of Pavel Bermondt. I might have the site of the bridge wrong but believe that is the spot. The link is an interview with a riflemen on how it got started.

Thanks so much for watching and commenting… I really appreciate the kind words!👍👌
Here’s some info about that monument .
“The events of Bloody Sunday in St. Petersburg on January 9, 1905, when hundreds of peaceful protestors were slaughtered by their tsar, inspired Latvians to show their solidarity with the workers of the Russian capital by staging a strike during which meetings were held, songs sung and demands for greater autonomy made. This ominous powder keg was finally lit a few days later on January 13 when peaceful demonstrators met a Russian military force near the River Daugava. Shots were fired and panic ensued. Some demonstrators were killed by bullets and others fell through the ice in the river and drowned. All told, at least 70 perished and another 200 were injured. A decidedly Soviet statue with two proletarians hoisting a flag now approximates the spot where the carnage occurred and the street is also named after the incident - 13.janvāra iela.”
Fantastic video mate👍. Cheers🍻
Thank you mate... So happy you enjoyed it.

Hey Justin - You bought Yuri Antonov's album 'поверь в мечту'. I still have the copy I bought in Leningrad back in the early 80s when it first came out. I still love it, especially the title track. He was a bit of a Soviet rock star back in the day. Btw -you got a bargain at 1 euro. It sells on Amazon for $49.99
Hi Alan,
I think you and I have many parallels in life and would be super interesting to chat with you.
I have read all your messages over the last couple of days, and I honestly feel they deserve an elaborate response, not just a one liner!!?
But all I can say is that the message you sent me in response to mine was very honest and it takes some level of self respect and high self esteem to respond the way you did. Respect!
Funny how sometimes the best friendships can begin on shaky ground!!!
I will take the time to give your message the response it deserves.
Please consider also connecting with me on Instagram, as I can track the messages better there.
All the best my friend and thank you so much for watchin.
Here is to having a beer one day and listening to Antonov and sharing our stories👍👌
Hi Justin - thanks for getting back to me and all I can say is a very heartfelt большое спасибо for your very kind words (especially given what an idiot I was earlier!)
I would love one day to meet up wih you because yes, now I have watched more of your videos, we definitely have many parallels in life, a love of languages being an obvious example.
I am not sure about 'a' beer, I think we will need an entire brewery on standby for the sharing of stories! A taster for you - once, when visiting a family in Poland, I refused a glass of vodka they offered me. It was 10 o clock in the morning! Seeing that I had offended them I explained that I never drink alcohol in the daytime only in the evening. To which grandma replied 'We will draw the curtains'!!!
I've watched all the Bulgaria videos and now, as you know, I am exploring Riga and Latvia with you. I never quite made it to Riga. When I was in the Soviet Union for a year we had a trip to Riga but I missed out. I spent a month in hospital in a room allocated for the 'Heros of Soviet Labour''. I had a heart problem, I wasn't pregnant! Thanks to your videos I see now why my co-students raved so much about it.
I'm not on instagram but I will sign up and follow you there. For now I will say удачи тебе and, as they say here in Turkey görüşürüz
@@J.E.E I am not sure why you are so obsessed with the soviet era stuff ?, perhaps you should visit the museums that show what happened to the Latvians under soviet occupation, the deportations etc, why do you think the biggest soviet monument in Latvia was taken down ? That stalin statue should be banned, that's the same as selling a hitler statue.
Latvia my home
👍👌
It is so wonderful travel with your explanation!! Thank you for sharing this my new friend!! Greeting from Korea!!😍😍👍👍
Hello my new Korean friend👍👌
So happy you liked it and please stay tuned for plenty more🙏

Great video Justin! Just read Bald and Bankrupt is finishing with his Eastern European vids….Such a shame 😞 so glad you’re continuing to build your channel and bring us fantastic content 👍
Hi Jim,
That news was quite a surprise!!!
Well I will do my best to keep the videos coming
Happy you enjoy them and all the best👌👍
Great to see this part of Riga, Justin...remember there used to be boat tours along there, and to the other side of River( which was then in ruins along the river front)...i believe if i recall, there is/was a museum nearby devoted to Latvian`s deported to Siberia,is that still there?
Very interesting video, Justin! I haven’t been to Riga for a while so it’s nice to see it through a video at least. That flea market had some items we had at home, too. Like that teeth brushing powder and the “calculator”. I remember those from my childhood. And, funnily enough, I just spoke to my mum today and she was going through a box of old badges her mum left. It’s full of badges from different kind of places - each organisation, workplace, university etc had their own badge. Lots of old badges from abroad as well, because my grandfather got to travel abroad quite often due to his work in soviet times (he was a director of a big national company). So my mum was sorting those out and reminiscing. We have a big collection of souvenirs from many countries as well. I think lots of people have a collection of some sort and it just sits somewhere in the attic or storage.
Hi Ines,
Wow that is fascinating... As you know I live to travel and a collection of travel memorabilia is super interesting.
I am happy you enjoyed the video... The market was my favourite part, as I love experiencing the past.
I hope you are keeping well!
Thank you as always for your aupport

@justin Following the shooting of demonstrators in St. Petersburg on January 9, 1905 a wide-scale general strike began in Riga. On January 13 Russian army troops opened fire on demonstrators in Riga killing 73 and injuring 200 people. During the summer of 1905 the main revolutionary events moved to the countryside.
Thank you very much for your input! 👍😃
very nice video, what date exactly?
@29:25 That represents the start of big revolution in Latvia and Russian empire, and that monument is near the shooting site of demonstrators on January 13, 1905.
Thank you very much for your input!
Beautiful city and wonderful video like always TJK
Thank you Javed... Any update on your travels?
The 1905 revolution in Latvia was part of the 1905 revolution in the Russian Empire. It started on January 13, 1905 with the shooting of a demonstration in Riga, the data collected by Vēsturnieku show that more than 2,000 Latvian citizens were killed without a court verdict, the military court pronounced 427 death sentences, sent 2,652 people to Siberia for penal servitude, and about 7-8 thousand were punished with prison terms. This is one of the reasons why Latvian riflemen had so much support for Lenin and the Bolsheviks.
Okay, so after watching Your videos about Riga, I came to a conclusion. There are currently elections going on, and I would love to see an elected major of Riga - Justin himself 😆 So much love and knowledge about such a small town... You would definetely do the job right 😆 Thanks for your vids' Great job there!
Hello mate...
So happy you liked the video and thank you so much for watching.
Mayor of Riga🤣🤣🤣 that would be funny, but I am sure my intentions and actions would be in the right place

Hello mate...

Latvia or Albania, which place do you like better?
Hello my friend.
My character is to find the best out of every situation and anywhere I go... So the countries are so different that it is hard to say!
But I live in Riga and for now absolutely love it
29:38 the date 1905 represents the beginning of anti Russian empire revolution. in January 13. 1905. Bolshevik revolution begun. after tzar-guard shot dead many protesting unarmed people on frozen Daugava. legend say that people didn't run after shots fired. but kept moving forward till no one left to move.
Riga was a big bastion for communist movement. people believed in a dream of free country. and we did it. for good Latvian Rifleman services Lenin granted us independence. but just to take it back few decades later by comrade Stalin. very complicated history in this part of the world. also is not that simple history about Latvian SS legion during WW2. people dreamed about free country, you know...
Hello! Thank you very much for watching and filling me in on the history… very interesting information!👍👌
I was in Lithuania and also Latvia a few weeks ago. And in Lithuania, generally there was a lot more Ukrainan flags than in Latvia. People in Lithuania seems to be even more supportive of Ukraine, than in Latvia to me.
Probably because Latvia 🇱🇻 has a large ethnic Russian minority compared to Lithuania 🇱🇹
In Latvia there is approximately 24% Russian minority, in Lithuania 4% Russian minority, I think that explains!
I noticed the same thing, but our 2 friends that commented cleared it up for us👍👌
Compare with any northern european cities ,riga look boring.
Hello mate.
You should try it!!! Really not boring.
But then again it is not my character to ever be bored, no matter where I am.
Life is too short to entertain being bored
The Latvian rifleman monument is not only for those who were with Lenin. Latvian riflmans should be understood as the time period from 1914 to 1920. First of all, these are the battles with the invading Imperial German army. Latvian riflemen were volunteer Latvian soldiers who participated in battles of the First World War, Latvian freedom struggle and Russian civil war as part of Latvian rifle regiments. In total, about 60,000 soldiers served in eight rifle regiments. So the Freedom Monument was basically built for Latvian riflemens as soldiers of Latvian independence. In this regard, another grandiose but sad monument was built for them. Brothers' graves memorial complex in Riga.
