    I have heard both sides of whether he is good or evil, and he is a combination of both. He wasn't that evil person everyone thinks he is, because he was trying to protect everyone he could, but he knew, in the end, it would come down to one person to win. He knew at the beginning. He didn't tell them because he didn't want anyone to feel hopeless.

  • @BunniMonster
    @BunniMonster Před 2 lety +676

    People hate him based on the deaths of Ali and Sae-Byeok but both of those deaths were actually very merciful in the full context of the game.
    Sae-Byeok was the walking (Slumping in a corner) dead, there was no chance of her surviving her glass wound even if the games had been stopped (I doubt she would have voted to stop anyway considering her deal with Gi-Hoon, she was prepared for death), Sang-Woo ended her suffering quickly and saved her brother in the process which was all she cared about at that point.
    As for Ali, the complaint is always about "betrayal" (A silly concept in a game of life or death) and viewer's heartbreak at Ali knowing he'd been played but if you really think about it, Ali had the least horrific experience of everyone who died in that game. Rather than sitting around, wallowing in sadness, knowing he's about to die and spending his last few minutes in terror, Sang-Woo was giving Ali hope and a feeling of unity in his final moments. Remember when Sang-Woo told Ali to meet him again at a specific time? Well Sang-Woo turned in the marbles well before that time came, the only reason Ali even found out he'd lost was because the guard took so long to take him out and Ali had enough time to return to the meeting spot. If the guard had done his job as soon as Ali had lost (Like all the other guards did), he never would have known. The real villain of Sang-Woo and Ali's scene was the useless pink soldier who ruined Sang-Woo's dream of a quick and painless end for his new little brother.

    @karlluigi1987 Před 2 lety +38

    SANG WOO is actually my favorite character in the series, he was a great strategist, and the most realistic out of all the main characters, if you're in this type of game, your main instinct is always to survive, some people might think he's a traitor, but he was just doing everything he could so he wouldn't die, and that's why he lasted until the final game.. he's also the reason, they survive multiple times..
    Remember in the 1st game, he even gave Gi-Han Strategy to survive..
    Then when they got back outside, he was even to kind to give Ali money, even tough he's already broke..
    2nd game honeycomb, he was able to figure out the Honeycomb, but he's not exactly sure how the game actually works, so he decided for them to split up, the only problem with this is he didn't atleast inform his team that he think the game involves honeycomb.
    3rd game Tug of War, he's actually the reason they won, the old guys strategy was good at the beginning, but didn't actually work to finish the game, so they tried Sang Woo's idea to step forward, and that's what made them win.
    4th game The Marbles, this is the game where people started to really hate Sang Woo, because he tricked Ali, but no one is Judging Gi-Han, when he was decieving the old man, even tough they both betrayed their partners to survive. NOTE: there's no actual rule on how they should acquire the marbles, aside from no Violence, so basically there's no cheating for both Sang Woo and Gi-Han.
    5th game, people was also angry at Sang Woo for pushing the glass maker, yet if he didn't push him, then they would all waste their time, and they'll all die in the bridge, he's basically the reason all 3 of them survive at the end.
    Next is after the dinner, this is the only thing I didn't like about Sang Woo, because she killed the Sae-byeok for no particular reason, since there's no reason for him to kill her since they're not yet fighting for survival, since they're not yet in the game.
    Last Game, the squid game he sacrifice himself so Gi-Han could win the game, since Gi-Han doesn't want to continue..

In the last game he did kill himself but he was already suicidal, plus it was so that his mother can be happy because if they chose to end the game he wouldn't be able to save his mother but he let Gi-Hun win so that he can take care of his mother with the money

It’s easy to judge from the outside, but he was put in an impossible situation and forced to make a decision on that basis. So not a villain, nor a hero, just human: complicated. And that’s what made him a great character.

Sang Woo brought up the vote leading to 10+ people leaving and never going back to the game, they're still alive. If Sang Woo didn't think of that clutch move in tug of war or didn't push the glassmaker, everyone dies. Gi Hun winning with massive amounts of money and a vendetta against the games, and already taking one of the SG cards means 1 more life saved, and many more to be saved, arguably because of Sang Woo.

    Sang-Woo was a covert narcissist. His friendship with Ali was pure manipulation . Ali's character was loving, but that loving nature also made him naïve. Let us not forget how his previous boss tried to rip Ali off. Like Ali's former boss, Sang-Woo preyed upon him. As for Sang-Woo's suicide, it was because he brought shame onto his family. Even if Sang-Woo had won the money he would have killed himself any ways due to that shame. Yes, Sang-Woo's character does exhibit some level of humanity but that was also shown with all the other character personalities within the story. The Yin and Yang exists within us all; however, when put to the test that is when ones true colors are exposed. The story of the Squid Games sums up the different personality types one will encounter within the game of life. It plays with the concept that even within the most harden and immoral character there was some level of humanity remaining. It makes one question if a persons morals are based solely on an external construct, based on the cards that life has dealt them, verses an internal one. Maybe it's a mixer of both? It's a complex topic but very philosophical indeed! The character development in the Squid Games touches upon the complex 3 dimensional side of human psychology. It was well written!

He didn’t want to risk admitting his faults to society, he didn’t even tell his mother the truth about his debts. He was a coward that manipulated the trust of others to win the game. The reason he didn’t want to win in the end though is because he already was feeling suicidal before entering the game. Think about it. I don’t know if I would necessarily call him a narcissist but I think he portrayed narcissistic characteristics within the course of the series.

    Sang-woo was not a bad person. He obviously cared. He did some cold things but I think this speaks to how complicated people can be. A lot of stories make a "good" and "bad" character but characters like sang-woo was written well with how moral dilemmas can lead people to make decisions that can either be seen as good or seen as cold and calculated. I would say IRL he would not act like this but it was a life and death situation and everyone was only trying to survive.
