- San Francesco in Assisi is an Italian Gothic building begun c.1228 and consecrated 1253.
"The sequence of events for this seismic event is as follows: At about 2:30 AM, a 5.7 magnitude earthquake hit the basilica. Coincidentally, Ghigo Roli, a photographer who had been photographing the Upper Basilica’s frescoes for months, happened to be in the basilica during the event. In his testimony of the first tremor, he recalls that immediately after the first tremor the air was filled with dust, and the floor was littered with chips of frescoe paint. Upon his initial inspection of the church, Roli notes that a large crack had formed on the great arch along the south face of the transept and a large stone had fallen from the double lancet from a column on the North side of the basilica. This was all of the damage witnessed by Roli that night, which by his testimony, seems to have been limited to non-structural damages. The next morning at about 11:42 AM, a second tremor of magnitude 8.5 hit the basilica. This time, Roli was just outside the doors of the Basilica and a camera crew from Umbria TV was at the front of the nave videotaping. Roli reports that the jambs of the Basilica’s doors rose, then fell while “lurching first forward then back...”

Much of the fresco on the vault's surface (St Jerome, early 1290s by the Roman Masters of the St Francis cycle) was recovered and was partly reconstructed. The structure has been fitted with devices that allow the facades to flex in any future quakes, and the roof above, largely of masonry and reinforced concrete (latter of 1953) strengthened with steel.
Four people died under this collapse, two surveyors and two friars.
Two Franciscan friars and two surveyors which were there assessing the damage caused by an earlier earthquake were killed in that collapse. More died in the surrounding area.

I lived in the area. that day they took us out of school to do an outdoor lesson, it wasn't the first time I felt an earthquake, living on the top floor of a four-storey house felt even stronger than those who lived in smaller houses. but feeling the earth, a mountain to be precise, shaking like that... we were children, although it might seem funny some of us burst into tears and the sensation when the earthquake was over was really strange. the crazy thing is that to get us back to school the teacher made us cross an 80 meter high bridge, a Roman aqueduct. after the earthquake. absurd.
As a young Franciscan Friar I spent the previous summer of 1996 in the Sacro Convento showing people around the basilicas, I knew the Novice Master killed in this video. Due to a complete lack of health and safety these people died.

I count more than 4 people under the direct area that couldn't have made it out in time before the collapse. It's amazing that 6 of them survived, I'm sure they had lung issues after inhaling all that debris.

If you set the playback speed to 2x, you can see how fast it actually happened. Terrifying in that there was not much time to really react once the second earthquake hit.

@@k90v85 For whatever reason, this video is being played at only half speed. 2x speed is actually "real" time. There was an NBC video that covered this story in the Related Videos section, and they play the footage back at the correct speed.

They probably would have used one in 2024, but unfortunately 1997 was a bit early for an affordable and effective remote operated vehicle.
Also I don't think they expected to have a much larger earthquake follow during the survey. Edit: And the second one was reported as being 8.5, which is about a 1000x greater than the earlier 5.7 in terms of its magnitude.
I've seen movie scenes of falling debris but this is nothing compared to that

I had to do research to see if this was real. With so many people making fake content these days, you have to double check everything. And the footage almost looked like it could have been faked. Unfortunately, this is real and people did die when this happened years ago.
It's absurd not to be able to trust the news anymore but we've reached this point and I understand it. I also trust videos less and less. being a gamer sometimes you notice certain things but the further we go the more difficult it will be. in this case, since it was an important event in Italy, it is easy to document it but I imagine it is not so easy in other more remote areas.
