- Assisi, Italy - the cave of Saint Francis, St. Francis' cave in Assisi, Italy - full tour. Let's visit The Eremo delle Carceri which is a hermitage complex located in a steep forest gorge in Umbria, in central Italy, four kilometers above Assisi.
In the 13th century, Saint Francis of Assisi would often come to this place to pray and contemplate, as did other hermits before him. When Saint Francis of Assisi first came in 1205, the only building here was a tiny 12th-century oratory. Soon, other men followed him to the mountain, finding their own isolated caves nearby in which to pray. The oratory became known as Santa Maria delle Carceri after the small "prisons" occupied by friars in the area.
Saint Francis of Assisi dedicated himself to a life of preaching and missions, but throughout his life he would frequently withdraw to the Carceri to pray.
In the centuries that followed, various buildings were added around St. Francis' cave and the original oratory, forming the sizable complex that exists today. Today some Franciscan monks live there and visitors are welcome.

Hello, thank you for your comments!!
The mother of St Francis was named "Pica" , she was french. St. Francis was bilingual, they called him il 'Francesco because he spoke french. His baptisimal name was Giovanni Di Bernardone. His father's name was Bernardo. I do not know where in France Pica came from. Assisi is beautiful, serene & a very holy place to the Italians. My mother is from Italy & I can say that Italy is the most breathtaking country I have ever had the privilege to see. Perugia is nearby as the town of Vinci where Leonardo was born, (his house still stands)..........thank you for sharing this beautiful video w/ the world . St. Francesco is the patron saint of animals, the most beautiful of all living entities are animals, this is why St. Francesco is my favorite saint.
Hi Anna, thank you for your comments. I agree about Italy and I spent a few days in Assisi, what a beautiful city!
Pica de Bourlemont, about whom little is known except that she was a noblewoman originally from Provence
Birds singing is so lively to hear.

I have been in Assisi twice. The first time I was really impressed and very touched by S.Francesco and Clara presence. But I have not been to the monastery where he started his order. Maybe next time.
Hello, thank you for your comments and for watching my videos!! 👍👍👍
The cave at 8:24 may be that of Brother Leo, according to the sign "Fra Leone". Brother Leo was St. Francis's closest companion and scribe. He was with St. Francis when he received the stigmata.

Thank you for sharing this. I was blessed to spent five days in Assisi back in 2002, and managed to spend an afternoon in this beautiful place. A young friar also allowed me to pray in their private chapel.
What a beautiful place, I am so glad I decided to visit.. I was virtually alone and I will never forget the experience f walking around the whole area...
Thank you so much for sharing...
Hi Darlene, thank you for your comments!
Thank you very much for this really lovely video, and so happy that there was no distracting music, but beautiful bird song, so appropriate. Stt Francis has long been very close to my heart, though I'm not a Catholic and have never been to Italy. But my father was an Italian prisoner of war, over here in UK, he was born not too far from Assisi, though he had sadly become a non believer and was a cruel man. But I loved Jesus from an early age and St Francis was a truly Holy man of extremely rare quality. I loved your video, it's touched my heart deeply. God Bless 🙏🏻💖
Hello Hannah, thank you for these wonderful comments! 😊😊😊 I must admit that visiting this place was one of the most wonderful experiences in my life, I am so glad I got a chance to record my visit... I hope I can go back one day soon!

Hi Eddy, thank you for your comments. I am still in Africa.......
At 6:37, on the right hand side, directly opposite the bronze figures of Francis and two of his "brothers", you can get a very brief look at the successor of the oak tree where the saint preached to the birds. I was in Assisi in 2004, and saw it myself during a visit to Eremo delle Carceri...
Interesting comments.. Thank you! 👍👍👍

Thank you so much. Looks like I will be comment 113, my favorite number. (112 comments before and after... Hmmm...) I grew up in Pennsylvania America. In the 80s I was in High School as a teenager. I used to always keep Murray Bodo's book on St Francis while I walked through Hell. God Bless. Hi, thank you for viewing my videos!! 👍👍👍
Thank you for the video, is there an easier way of getting to the tomb,,rather than going up hills and steep steps.
Unfortunately no.... but the number of steps is not that great...
Pax et bonum!
Francesco = di Francia (of France)
Thank you!!
I cannot believe they placed an ad @6:37!!!
Unfortunately I do not control over the ads, youtube decide where to place them regardless of subject....

Hello, thank you for watching my videos!! 👍👍👍
Hi Vic,
How do I get to the site of the caves from Assisi? Is it possible to get there by car or is it better to walk from the town?
Any comments are most welcome. Thank you.
Hi, the site of Eremo delle Carceri is about 5 kilometers away from the centre of Assissi, it is easier to take a car than having to walk around 10 kilometers distance there and back from Assissi..
This is the prison hermitage. It is not a sanctuary or a monastery. The Friars Minor built not monasteries but convents. It's just a detail but important. Nice video.
Hello, thank you for watching my videos!! 👍👍👍
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Hello, thank you for watching my videos!! 😊😊😊
It's called Eremo Le Carceri. Originally it was occupied by Syrian hermit monks fleeing persecution from Muslims in the 9th Century but St Francis occupied it early in his vocation and later on. St Bernardine of Sienna reformed the Order and had many of the current buildings made for the friars (they are not monks).
Hello, thank you for your comments!!
His fahers name was Pietro and got very angry with Francis when he left to start his new religious life😊
Hi, thank you for this information and for watching my videos!! 😊😊😊
Vic have you been to the other country's in Central an South America ? Oh an are you a historian ?
I have been everywhere south of Mexico with the exception of Bolivia, Paraguay, Colombia and Venezuela..
Vic Stefanu - World Travels and Adventures what were your favorite places in El Salvador an Ecuador ? An by any chance do you have any pictures ?
I have a slideshow from the Galapagos islands (Ecuador) on my channel and you can find my new videos from El Salvador by typing 'vic stefanu el salvador'
I always understood that St.Francis was 47 when he died. 20 years after his conversion @ the age of 27. This I discovered in my study of Franciscan History. 44 is the recorded age here.?
Hello and thank you for watching my videos. Wikipedia mentions that St Francis was 44 years old at the time of his death. Here is the actual text: 'Francis of Assisi (born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone; Italian: Francesco d'Assisi; Latin: Franciscus Assisiensis; 1181 or 1182 - 3 October 1226), was an Italian Catholic friar, deacon, and mystic. He founded the men's Order of Friars Minor, the women's Order of St. Clare, the Third Order of St. Francis and the Custody of the Holy Land. Francis is one of the most venerated religious figures in Christianity.'
Cardinal OMalley Sean, Cardinal Manning
