The lowest songs on the list still depict pretty terrifying situations: the cops confronting them, Paul almost dying during We're Great Again, but those numbers all had the same thing in common. In each of them Paul was not alone. It was interesting that you put Cup of Poison Coffee lower on the list than Roasted Coffee, even though Poison Coffee has a more explicitly sinister tone. As soon as he sees Emma frightened he takes up the role of protector. You see it in Not Your Seed as well, when he is with Bill. Wether he knows it or not, he feels a need to be strong for his friends, and that makes him brave.
On the flip side of that, he is at his most vulnerable when he feels alone. In La De Da Da Day and What Do You Want Paul he is constantly trying to talk to the people around him and get some glimpse of normalcy, to show him that he's not alone. When he goes to Beanie's after What Do You Want he's not looking for a coffee, he's looking for someone to help him be strong, which is what makes it all the scarier when the one person he wanted to see comes out singing.

In not your seed I don't think he's scared he looks completely heartbroken. That's his best friend's daughter and i dont think there was a place in him to be scared cause he was just feeling utter defeat at seeing this girl he's known since she was little and shes gone.

i mean, as a previous comment said, that's only because paul wants to brave for emma and his friends and protect them bc you see him take on the leader role and always putting himself in the line of fire instead of his friends and he's more vulnerable when he's on his own. paul is such a good, well-written protagonist honestly.
Also the prospect of the unknown. In the lower-ranking songs he knows what he's facing: a race of aliens that could infect people to make them sing. In higher ranking songs he's just out for a normal day and confronted with his worst nightmare, which is that the world had become a musical, so of course he's like wtf is happening?

I just noticed how absolutely devastated and/or heartbroken Paul was during Join Us (and Die), seeing his friend be invaded by one of the aliens. At one point, he looks to even try to talk to Charlotte, like hoping she'd return back to normal, but instead immediately decides to protect Emma. Near the end of the song, it also looks like he was about to breakdown overe his friend's fate.

The best part of this show is Paul’s casting. You can tell the moment that he started singing and it was WAY too good that it wouldn’t end happily. No way they’d leave that smooth voice to only one number.

I think what's so great about, Paul is that even though this scenario is his worst nightmare, when he was in the most danger he really stepped up and showed courage to protect those he cared about because he was worried for their safety more than he was afraid of what was happening.
