I think we ALL kind of wish series 7 & 8 never happened. It has its moments, but on the whole, I see it as something to just get through when I get the itch every few years to watch them all again from the beginning.
I like all the ttheories, they dont diminish Red Dwarf lore at all. If anything it enhances it. Many thanks for broadening the possibities for my next re watch of every episode.

It all comes together, theres even things (that I ended up cutting out to save time) like Lister not being able to pronounce Jane 'Austin', even though Kochanski has said the name in front of him before, and he's even been to pride and prejudice world, twice!!!
Red Dwarf is such a special show. It's has such a surprising level of depth and how everyone scrambled to get it all done and figure everything out. They're all legends!
Well, they woke up by the water tank, wearing the diving bell suits, so either the hallucination started when we all thought - when they emerged from the bell covered in ink (Occam's Razor) and Lister threw a tentacle at Rimmer - or they never woke up at all in B2E. Also, how did Cat bring the second squid to Red Dwarf if Red Dwarf was stolen by the nanobots while the crew were on the Esperanto? If that was the case, the second squid would have been somewhere on Starbug for 200+ years and throughout S6 and S7, and survived that ship's destruction in 'Back in the Red', only to somehow end up in the water tank on G-deck, having not grown in that time... ;)
There is also the possibility that they got trapped in the unreality field in Out of Time, making the entirety of series 7, 8 and Back to Earth a false reality. That might explain why everything seems to be reset by series 10...
Except they can't be still trapped in the back to reality one because we saw Holly trying to snap them out of it whilst they were having the car chase. The 4 of them never witnessed Holly doing that so it can't have been part of the hallucination.
Clue 3 is what got me :) awesome theory and the writers are smart enough to have set up all the clues, I finally got round to doin that Starbug animation, jus uploaded it x
An interesting thought. You've given me another thought, what if Lister never left stasis? If he is indeed outside of space and time while there then he could be seeing pieces of alternate timelines which his mind is organizing into some kind of narrative.
One theory also occurs that Red Dwarf might never have been destroyed and this was part of Rimmer's hallucinations in Stasis Leak from Lister's breakfast containing hallucinagenic mushrooms.
actually... thinking about it... if they ever wanted another dispare squid episode... then having rimmer wake up, pre-accident, using modern deaging on the cast, would make for an amazing episode!
I forgot Rimmer was living again in series 8. He must have died again between 8 and Back to Earth and a new hologram made of him. That seems...fair enough I suppose?
I also think it was blood. It was never mentioned if only ink or also blood itself can trigger the halucionation effect - only the ink. It seems like the ink was released and mixed with the blood a pain reaction, becuse of that we didn´t see any pink stuff in "Return to reality". They couldn´t be in the hallucination more than a week - if you take human biology into account, you can survive few weeks without food, but only week without water (unless the other members of RD were supplying that as liquid food - which we didn´t see). The effect of the ink could be probably just brief, while the leviathan (squid) escaped and it wasn´t necessary to keep them under effect too long. Also, you can dream a very long dream during quality sleep which can last just an hour. So theoretically it would be possible they could experience whole story in just one afternoon. Of course, I can be wrong in every point, but this is what I think :)
im assuming that s8's hallucination was made bybthe dispare squid. mind you, there were plenty of bad moments for the cre in back to earth, so im not actually convinced by Krytens analysis that it produced joy... darn lying androids! 😂
If nothing matters because it's all a dream, if you even start thinking that it's all probably still a dream, what's the point? IMO these things only work when they're reasonably short-term, and when you can still believe that what you're being told has real relevance and isn't just going to be wiped away. Yes, there's plenty that gets wiped away, but you - e.g. the pool with planets episode - but you generally don't know that's going to happen until it does, and you still get to spend some time with the characters, learning more about them that stays relevant. Huge long periods wiped away... well, the characters that they became are increasingly disconnected to what they will be after the reboot. OK, you can still do some butterfly-effect exploring of possibilities, but that has limits too.
Let's rule out theories 2 & 3, it can't be 2 as The Despair Squid wasn't the last episode of it's season, it was meant to be but for anyone who was recording the show off the TV will know it wasn't, it was the first episode of the season, the actual last episode was if I remember correctly Demons and Angels, it's why where they lost Red Dwarf originally makes no sense as they forgot the actual release order and went off the offical list which was wrong, though that will come down to if you follow offical canon or what you saw at original release. As for 3, it can't be Better than Life as they'd all be long dead, the books show pretty clearly what happens to people in better than life they can't look after themselves and waste away (and you see directly what that does to the crew after they escape), Holly and the Scutters could of done their best to maintain them but it wouldn't of lasted indefinitely and they'd of just eventually atrophied to death

I wasn't sure about this, but then you mentioned that the cat hadn't fixed his hair. The writers have been incredibly consistent with his character, so him not fixing his hair as his number one priority would be insanely out of character. He would most definitely fix himself up first, then tell everyone about the danger. Even in series 7, when they find that planetoid that came from Red Dwarf, he leaves the buggy, then comes back for a comb because of the raging storm. In later seasons where he's diagnosed as a psychopath, it makes sense, because yes, he has only ever done things for himself and would betray everyone for fish a la crème. Simply for that, I believe that your theory holds water. The writers have always been sure to be consistent with the characters motivations and actions, so the cat not fixing his hair could very well be a massive clue.
Am I the only one stopped watching that 3 parter when Lister walked down Coronation Street? I didn't want to see the inevitable cringey Lister meets Craig scene so ran away and waited for the next season to be made!
The squid could have been smuggled aboard by another crew member around the same time Liter's brought his cat onboard. It's possible the whole of red dwarf is an hallucination or one of the crew... Alternatively, maybe that's why the drive plate failed and the crew were killed. Maybe Lister smuggled the squid on board and all this is his hallucination (it didn't take 3 million years or the background radiation to die down).. Maybe we're all the crew on red dwarf and we're all in a squid induced hallucination where we are watching our real selves go through various escapades on a TV show.... Maybe, just maybe, Red Dwarf Nerd is starting to wake up and theory pops in to his head.. Only it's not just about the show we are watching...
What would be the point of this, if no one knows about it and it's never revealed, remember at the time this was written, they wouldn't have been certain of getting another series. Without revealing and confirming it, it's pointless conjecture. I think you are looking too deeply into this and coming up with your own story.

that's a very good point. i was thinking... i guess its an extreamly long lived creature, so 200years wassnt too long for it?

When it comes to science fiction the possibilities are just endless, I think that's one of the reasons Red Dwarf has lasted as long as it has!
