      I think these guys are looking for hte wrong contamination. Correct me as needed, but my bet is that there was a lot of diesel and other chemical contamination of the ground around this runway. Looking for carcinogens, that should be the target, not radiation.

    I lived in the area and worked at RAF GC for a number of years at the time of Cruise missiles: Claims of contamination and cancer clusters have been suggested at quite a few old WW2 military sites in the area, not just RAF GC. The claims were repeated regularly by opponents to these sites whenever a particular site was reactivated or returned to sleeper status. Many of the old WW2 areas are now housing estates. private land or public access land. Sightings of 3 legged chickens and 2 headed cows are as common a sight in the area as the Loch Ness monster is in Loch Ness!!

    Hey guys, love the adventures. I see some people have added useful tips. I’d like to add a couple myself. Waiting till after recent rain is a good idea for a few reasons including the ground is soft and easier to dig up. Also I would think if the plane had exploded then pieces of it would have flown all over the place. I very much doubt they would have found them all. You never know there could be radioactive metal material still around there. A metal detector could possibly help you there.
    Good luck guys

    A quote from a site survey not far away. It seems that is entirely natural for the area. I think its a river valley which would explain the gravelly nature of the soil.

If you can contact me, Lord Horus he has a very sensitive Geiger counter that he let's me borrow at work Radio Carbon dating artifacts. I as the father get to use it when we are conditioning our Accelerated Mass Spectrometer to date prepared samples from our lab for carbon dating. Lord Horus says you can borrow this for a couple of weeks if you wish to do a follow video or other project sometime. I'm always freaked out by background radiation - it's utterly harmless, but what's somewhat terrifying about it, is it's age. It's come from distant stars, but some of it originated with the 'Big Bang'. 'Event One'. That small matter. The clicks on your counter, are indications of charged particles. From the Beginning. Of. Everything. Eerier still, the hiss, and crackle of 'static' as you tune an analogue radio, is the background 'noise' of that event. When you hear that static, you're listening directly to the past. And thinking of that has kept me awake at night. It's one of those things that is best not thought about too much, otherwise, you realise how deeply troubling it is.

    During WW2 if there was a accident they used to bulldoze the rubbish off the nearest end off the runway and bury it, I don’t know if this counts and was still done in the 1950’s. It was a case they owned the site and it had its own rubbish dumps. I don’t know if this helps

    I used to fly with a friend, from Popham airfield back in the day & when Greenham was active you couldn't get anywhere near its airspace. After de-commissioning we could fly right over it no problem, I remember the 'mountains' of concrete crush that were present at the time they were vast! We could see for miles, from there we could see the Newbury by-pass being built. Greenham runway, so it is said was 4' thick of reinforced concrete & a mile long, do the math on how much there was in Cu. ft. Plus the peri tracks & roads, buildings, etc. so I think a lot was leftover & pushed out & graded everywhere. Unless there was a major explosion at the time of the incident that directly involved the weapon on the aircraft, I doubt if anything remains of that incident at all as if it was just fire alone fissile material would not be blown everywhere so guys you are looking for a needle in a haystack that does not exist IMHO. but well done for trying! Keep up the good work guys.

    I have not watched this save for the first few minutes, nor do I plan to watch the whole thing. One takeaway: in the first minute or two of this program the narrator states that the fuel tanks were dropped accidentally. The B-47 that dropped its fuel tanks was not an accident. Rather, the pilot had 6 engine fire warning lights and dropped the tanks in a panic, just barely missing the school. The aircraft on the tarmac that became engulfed in flames as a result of the dropped fuel tanks had mechanical problems and was delayed in taking off.
    The squadron commander whose squadron was participating in the exercise requested a nuclear weapon be moved onto the tarmac and be ready to load once the aircraft's problems were fixed. My father commanded the nuclear weapons depot at that time. My father refused to authorize the release of the weapon until the aircraft was ready to take off. The aircraft became engulfed in flames from the dropped fuel tanks before the nuclear device could be moved to the tarmac. There was no nuclear weapon on the tarmac when the aircraft caught fire.

    Hi. I know this is not too much information, my uncle worked at greenham common in the 70s till mid 80s. I remember my mum told me when we was watching the news when all the women demonstrated outside. When I spoke to my uncle, he said that he's job was not important even though he got there by. Bus with other workers. He never told me what he did and now has had heart attacks and strokes and is in a bad way. So sadly I can't speak to him. But I bet he had some interesting stories. 👍

    6:00 it is a path from the original perimeter wall. You can find remaining runway tarmac at 51.376344, -1.273915, would make a great reading I'd imagine. I've always heard rumours that the accident happened on the taxiway near the hangers which ironically is where the runway remains have been fly-tip dumped by the council hypocrites! Hope this is helpful. Here is further info: www.cpeo.org/lists/military/1996/msg00205.html

    Its Greenham common an airbase. Airbases need to be flat for obvious reasons. so I would assume a lot of the levels have been made up hence all the hardcore and gravel you are finding at less than a spades depth. But what would you do if you found a particular part that was high in radiaton?

  • @SueGirling68
    @SueGirling68 Před 4 lety

    Could it be that if an accident did happen then maybe through the years of rain etc that the radioactive particles seeped down into the water table and then into the drinking water, could that not be how the cancer rates are so high in those area's because the water itself contains it ????. x

  • @EQINOX187
    @EQINOX187 Před 4 lety

    When it comes to this type of thing I do not think you understand how it works, the only way you get a contamination zone / fallout is if the device is detonated or ground down into a dirty device and then detonated with conventional explosive to spread it, if it was simply sitting in the plane when it cought fire and even if it was a complete fire that burned the whole plane it would never have been reactive enough or hot enough to melt the core or cause it to explode, so basically if the whole plane and bomb casing melted it would simply have dropped the core onto the ground under the burning plane meaning that only a very small area would have received contamination from penetrating radiation perhaps 8sqm at most, so any clean up would have been in this area only and fairly easy to do and any that was missed would have decayed over the last 60 years and would be pretty much indistinguishable from background.

    The background radiation levels at Hiroshima and Nagasaki today are in line with those any anywhere else on earth. This is after a nuclear explosion. Now i'm no scientist but could we assume an accident involving nuclear material from very early devices not actually detonating would leave any more residue today than actual exploded devices?

    Before I watch this video, as I understand this incident nobody has ever found any actual evidence that there was ever an accident at this base involving the release of nuclear material including many third party studies by universities and whatnot. The "scientists" mentioned claimed that they found a lot and it was well dispersed, but these materials would have been mostly plutonium which doesn't disperse so easily due to ts density. Seems like if there was an accident as described they've done an extremely good job cleaning it up - probably too good...
