I don't use windshield shades to keep the interior cool. I use them to protect my dash, steering wheel, seats, etc from sun damage.
I do it for more privacy and that too

Living in Texas, a sun shade and dark tinted windows are a MUST! I've been using that "$7 sunshade" for the past two years now and the amount of times that I was able to get in to a relatively cool car on a hot day is immeasurable.
Same in southwest Florida. I have dark tinted windows on my back windows and heat reflective film on the front. I can get in the car without scorching myself on the worst summer days down here. Well worth paying for. I needed sun shades up north in the summer as it was impossible to get in the car right away but only need them on the really bad days in summer down here with that film. I expect being as we get mostly triple digit in heat indexes but not that many straight triple digit days like you get that the sun shades are required a lot more even with the film.
Let’s see a test with tinted windows as well...
From my experience tinted windows help a lot, and add some UV protection for your interior.
Depends on the type of tint, too. ;)
Has to be a good ceramic film.
And twst windshield film
Love my 5% 3M tint. Nice and cool and gives me privacy.
You should test different paint colors too. Black, white, grey, red, and blue. Different interior colors? Tinted vs untinted?
do ceramic tint vs no tint also windows cracked vs up
That’s what they’re going to do
They did do different interior colors and materials, they just didn't mention it. The XLT had the advantage from the start with its lighter cloth. I'm sure the shade still would have been effective, but they stacked the deck in its favor.
plmn93 Yep the lighter cloth definitely makes a difference. But I don’t think they realized that.
The only variable here that you guys could fix is making sure the test is done with two trucks with the same materials inside. The lariat and XLT have different materials and thus different temperatures. Otherwise I thought this was very interesting.
drives me crazy when they say "identical trucks" and they arent the same. Black Leather and Gray cloth are completely different
One has a sunroof.....
Try doing that test in South Texas and your equipment will likely fail.
Yup, I agree, spent several years in your part of the world.
Hey, its the BTBR guy. Explain how "..it.." will fail?
I was in Laredo (south Texas) for work. 110 yesterday 🤭
It works. Windshield sun shades have been around a long time. Darkest legal tint and and the reflective shade works great, keeps the dash and most importantly the seat and steering wheel from burning the sh#t out of you. Keeps the interior from fading and the dash from cracking too.
How far south? I'm in Brownsville!
White vehicles here in Florida have higher resale value because they are less affected by the sun. Difference between a white and black vehicle here is very noticeable! Black cars in Florida are much more likely to end up with cracked dashboards over time than any other color. As others have already mentioned tinting windows helps, too, and is a great way to passively protect your vehicle.
Zachary McGraw yeah after moving here its only white cars if i have a choice lol
I went to the junkyard the other day to get a part for my car. I have a 2001 isuzu trooper that I bought in 2014 with a cracked dash. I go to the junkyard with a 2000 trooper and the dash is fine. The car was white and my car is black. Never really thought about it until i saw this
The new crap paint that manufacters use doesn't last either. 2-3 year old vehicles have their hoods, roofs, and trunk lids fading/peeling lol
I live in southwest Florida. When I moved here after about 4 moths I had the windows tinted, dark in back and just heat reflective in front. Makes a world of difference. I had a light beige car and interior when I first moved here but it was totaled by a person pulling off a side road onto 41 in front of me so bought a dark charcoal. With the experience on the previous car I had the film put on the same week I bought it. It is now 6 1/2 years later and the dash is fine, can't say the same for the paint on the hood though. The film really makes a big difference. Aside from protecting the interior I can get in the car after it has been sitting for a few hours without getting burned or having trouble breathing in it.
Living in Australia temp can get high as 48oC or 120oF so you can appreciate shade carpark n even windows cracked open a little can make a big difference I wonder how quickly can aircon can cool both cab trucks down? Great vid fellas👍
Jamie Shields Very good idea. How much difference in 1 minute, 3 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes etc. how much and how quick would be great👍🤙😁
I’ve been doing the window crack trick for a while, definitely helps a lot.
Also when you first turn on the AC you should leave your windows partially down for 30-60 seconds. Car cools off a lot faster.
I live in Phoenix where it’s 125 degrees outside. Getting into your vehicle feels like crawling into an oven.
Can't you eat beef at 125???
@@TooMuchButtHair😂😂😂😂
Just traded my black Ford for a Silver one...the difference is very noticeable here in Vegas! Silver much colder...inside and out.
Living in Phoenix, AZ I can tell you the sunshades make a real difference for sure, cracking the window helps and if you can score shade from something (Tree, building etc...) makes all the difference and worth the extra steps!
Finding shade in those circumstances is like finding gold.
I don’t know why here in Phoenix we don’t have covered parking everywhere made from solar panels. It would shade our cars and generate electricity to run the A/C.
I wouldve liked to see a third truck with the windows cracked to see if the ability to exchange air made a significant difference to inside temps
I live in Arizona, cracking the window certainly makes a difference.
Apparently you don't live in the midwest. :-) If you crack your window, it'll rain. Every time. :-)
And if we do this out on the farm, the flies will find their way in with ease... It is amazing how they manage to find the small opening in the window.
@@TheJustin574 im stationed out in New Mexico right now and i agree it makes a difference, just wanted to see a numerical value difference
@@sconner omg, tell me about it.
Cool video idea, guys! I sure love my reflective windshield shade when it comes to keeping the top of my steering wheel & shift knob cool on the various vehicles I've had over the years. Never thought about it keeping the whole interior cooler.
Now this type of video is amazing ! Please do more car product testing like mats wax! And bug guards ! Things like that
You need to use real quality shade not the filmsy universal stuff. Like covercraft or heatshield. They do make a big difference in the hot summer here in southern GA, of course with ceramic films on side too. Maybe not quite in CO?🤣
Heatshield is the only one I ever use.
I use one and crack my windows open. It helps plus I have vent shades on my truck.
Have you tinted your windows?
@@andrewk8636 no but I want to here its 35% to be legal
@@seamusc508 ceramic tint helps alot. The darker the better. I've never had a car without illegal tint. Never been busted for it. 1 in 5 cars here have illegal tint, but I'm jot sure how its enforced in your area. I live in Portland and cops are amazing here and dont enforce unconstitutional laws like tint laws. Tha law here is also 35 but I've had limo tint all around on one of my cars and pulled over twice and they never once asked about tint.

First video I've seen from you all. This is awesome. Thanks for making these!
6" of snow on the windshield makes a big difference also Andre!
Nice! I use a sunshade when I’m just idling in a parking lot and there is definitely a difference when I don’t have it up!
I run a sun shade and crack all 4 windows for airflow and it makes a huge difference down here in Texas
It would be interesting to compare also what happens when you put the shield before the window and not inside the window. Since the sunrays don't reach the glass, the temperature might be different.
Florida here, use a shade on my Tacoma. Makes an enormous difference. Especially keeping the waters full of ice all day out on the job site. Helps if you can crack the windows a hair as well to introduce some airflow.
It would have been interesting if both trucks were driven to the spot with the climate control set at, say 70°, and then take initial baseline readings. Then after a couple time periods of an hour and two, check for new results.
Other Name yes. The test conditions were not ideal because the dashboard was going to be radiating heat after getting that much sun.
how about you do it for us :)
A sunshade is a must for my truck.
I live in New Orleans. It make a huge difference.
With most modern cars equipped with infotainment screens (that get larger and larger... especially Teslas with tablet-like proportions 😆), sunshades are a MUST to protect the LCD or LED screens/monitors from warping or cracking, or leaking when parking the car under the sun. The IC boards/chips inside them must also be so hot from all the sun radiating from the dashboard surface. Heck, even gauge clusters are nowadays loaded with LCD/LED screens and colored graphics (Mercedes-Benz S-class started the trend using "virtual" speedometers that look analog but its actually fake and digital).
Since I'm worried about these electronics on my gauge and dash, I actually use TWO sunshades (I also find the silver "reflectix" type ones to be better). One lays flat on the dash surface and the other one propped up against the windshield like in the video. Much, much cooler temperatures for the dash in my experience... 👍
I love these kinds of tests. New one could be putting the model 3 in a parkinglot next to a supercharger and running climate control on auto for a number of hours and then charging it and observing how much energy was used by the hvac. I emphasize charging at a supercharger because charging losses are different depending what you use to charge but if someone is concerned about using the hvac because of how much power it uses chances are they are on a long trip and will be using superchargers in that scenario
I mainly use the cover to protect the dashboard and interior from that nasty sun damage to seats and discoloration.
Great vid guys keep them coming. .
Interesting test. Checking the chrome and flat black in this video with the IR Temp gun can cause errors in the reading because of emissivity. Emissivity ranges from 0 to 1 with polished chrome being around 0.03 and matte black near 1.00. There is a lot of information on the Internet on emissivity and your IR Temp gun may have info in its manual. I enjoy your videos and thanks for all the hard work you guys do in producing them.
I use one here in Iowa our summers are hot. With keeping the dash cooler your AC cools down the cab of my truck much faster then when I don’t use it. Not fighting the extra heat coming off your dash board. That’s helps a lot. Plus it helps to protect your interior from the sun bleaching etc.
Great information guys thanks so much.
The infrared thermometer has a bias to read light and reflective objects at a lower temperature than the actual physical temperature. You might need to find something to use that is a consistent color and measure it from a consistent distance (maybe some kind of easy to remove stickers?) because the area being measured increases (think of a cone growing larger from the front of the tester) the farther away from the object you are.
To keep your car as cool as possible, get tinted windows, use sun shades on all windows, and keep your windows cracked down a little to let air flow through.
The difference between a cheap sun shade like used here and a quality one is also pretty big. They do cost most, and they are rigid (they fold up, but dont bend), but wow to they work well. Being thicker and insulated makes a big difference.
Front windshield screen helps, but, for max cooling, side window screen(s) should also be used on the sunny side of the car.
Tha is for posting! Great review.
Useful video! What about difference between silver and white after doing black and white?
Love the new series!
The quality of sun shade makes a big difference. I used the cheap ones like you tested for years. Last year I bought an more quality one for my new Ram. I would say 20 degrees difference. Maybe more. Plus tinted windows makes a difference as well. And I live in southern Nevada.
Try doing that test in Florida with the humidity. I just hope you and your equipment have insurance....
I did a test like this last year when it was 120* (Phoenix) Asphalt 161.4 - Cement driveway 153.3 - tailgate of my 040 super white Mighty TUNDRA 145.9.
I use a sun shield and its a huge difference without it. Also the protection it provides to the dash and seats is a plus .
Been using a cheap $10 sunshade for over 10 years now, best investment ever for the summertime. In addition, a quality tint helps tremendously too, particularly when combined with the sunshade. If you have a non-tinted vehicle, and put the sunshade up, there are still all of the other windows letting in the radiant heat, so its not anywhere near as effective when combined with even a minor tint.
The heat gun you're using to check heat is variable dependent on your distance from the target.
Since the baseline ambient and dash temps were not the same in both trucks, I would like to have seen you create a 2nd test where the sun screen is in the other truck. Then, you could average the numbers for a better test result. Still, your test was a success; and it's very much appreciated!
This is a fantastic video! I’ve been wondering this for some time so I recently got a cheap sunshade. My 2018 BMW X5 is an oven in the FL heat too and literally takes 10-15 minutes to cool it down. I’ve started to use the auto ventilation system & that definitely help lower the temp! I was thinking that a higher quality sunshade might provide better results too? If you have any recommendations please send them my way! Thanks again!!!
Doesn’t your BMW have a max A/C button?
I'd like to see the difference with a front clear windshield 'tint'.
I had this installed for a few days before my windshield cracked on a road trip. I could noticeably feel the difference.
If you talking about the 3m uv protection clear film, they do works, maybe better than shades. I had them on my old mustang, and you will feel cold in winter, even sun shines on you. Also helps a lot in summer. However, for a windshield with big slope like mustang, you can see the waving kinda thing on windshield. That's a down side. Maybe it's better for a more vertical windshield like trucks and Hummer
In Houston, you get that heat wave when you open the vehicle door and so you leave it open and turn on the ignition from the outside to lower the windows. Shades do help protect the dash as well. Shades are worth it in Houston.
You just have to use the aluminium windshield cover for winter to have these effect.
Additional In Summer i put a blanked over the side windows. Yes it looks ridiculous, but it works.
I use a sunshade and front door shades when parked,(rear doors are dark tinted) and sitting in the sun all day makes a huge difference on inside temps.
😂😂 they said 70 degrees. Its usually 74 at midnight here in north Florida.
78 at midnight right now in Central Florida lol. Tint and sun shade are a must for us! Our inside temps get hotter than the shaded dash temps. 70s hahahaha. Must be nice.
In really hot weather I use a furniture pad and cover the top of the can and windshield and that way the glass does not get hot. I keep in place by took in the corners in the doors
Huge difference but then anyone that’s used one knows that 😀
In SoCal this month, all the shopping centers heavily trim their trees in parking lots. It's almost impossible to find shade during the summer. Its ridiculous!
I can answer the moonroof question they mentioned at the end. One of my cars has a full glass roof moonroof with a porous fabric shade and the other car has a much smaller moonroof with a solid shade. One car is yellow with a white roof, the other is completely white. Although I have not measured the difference, there is a noticeable difference getting into the car with the fabric roof shade vs the other car. Living in Phoenix, that fabric roof shade is awful in the summer. But it is better than no shade at all.
Do a White truck & Black truck temp difference
yes white is cooler , I paint just the top of my F-150 white and now I mostly just use AC up to level 3 and I think I save gas too , so it had a pay back.
Great idea for a series, my wife uses one and she swears by it. I would really like to see the difference in all truck colors, I hate white trucks, but if they're cooler, I'd consider it. Great job.
One variable you guys could have controlled would have been the initial starting temperature. Run the A/C until the interiors are at least within a few degrees of each other and have the trucks in the shade to keep the dashes around the same temp as well. If you go check out Newton's Law of cooling, you'll see what I mean. Granted, there is a large enough difference in the results for it to not really matter, but food for thought next time you guys do an experiment.
As an Arizonan, sun shades are required if you want your AC to be blowing cool air before you get home from work
This test will also vary depending on the type of sun shade you get. There are companies like weathertech and many others that make custom fit sun shades for better coverage and fitment than the ones used in this video. BUT, every little bit helps just like in this here video.
One of your best videos.
FWIW I bought a silver f250 knowing I was moving to the southwest. I think there is a major difference esp. at hot trailheads sitting in the sun.
Good info thnx
i use sunshade on dash and on side windows. it makes a huge difference in hot houston texas. i have a black 2018 focus st. so ya sunshade are a must for me
I tested my SUV with the sunroof shade open and closed,...but I won't tell the outcome, until these guys do the test!
You guys do a great job I like your channel, this test you did is unfortunately backwards you should check for the rising temp from a cold starting point and measure how high the temp will go not how low the temp will go if you use the sun shade
In Az you need a sunshade
It's going to be warm either way. I had my bud tint my windshield and all other windows on my tundra. Gotta keep that uv under control
Funny how Andre had to do the hard part. Roman just chillin outside in cool air. Lmao.
Just curious if they both had the soundscreen windshield. That may have been the difference??
Ryan Torres im thinking one truck was more recently driven/ parked prior to starting the tests
I wish they had used the more precise Celsius system. It could probably reach a larger audience too. But I'm glad to hear that these work.
You guys should test what difference tinted windows makes.
Southwest Florida here. It'll still get blazing not inside but the sunshade is worth it just to keep the steering wheel from becoming more than you can stand to touch.
Get custom fit sun shades, well worth the extra money. Remote start from mobile phone will help big time by starting up 10 mins before departure to allow the air conditioner to start working.
If you do the color of trucks thing do silver as well because silver reflects light very well
Do you know if silver reflectix is better or just as good as black, for stealth car camping?
Can yall test tinted windows, standard tinting vs ceramic tenting to see how much cooler the ceramic is?
My first car was a 1976 Pontiac Sunbird. It was dark red outside with a black vinyl interior. You could seriously burn yourself if you tried to wear shorts in that car in the summertime!
Recently found the TFLtruck channel...now watch it regularly. Question for Andre...your accent...what's going on there? Canadian-Russian cross or what? Just curious.
Russian I think
I would really like to know which is better between reflectix or black shades for when camping and sleeping in the car
Chrome sun shade and two cracked windows makes a HUGE difference in 100degree west Texas heat. Quick tip!!! Always park your vehicle with the front windshield and sunshade facing the sun for best results. This way the sun's rays don't heat up the side windows and interior as much.
What did the outside temp change for the hour?
Those infrared thermometers measure the surface emissivity. If the surfaces are not the same or are textured it is easy to get wildly different readings because of different emissivity on the spot picked up by the sensor. Depending on the surface you might see a dramatic difference between readings only seconds apart and with slight changes to point of aim.
For more consistency, take some black electrical tape and stick an inch long piece on everything you are going to measure. When the time comes, measuring the temperature of that tape eliminates a lot of variables.
Except I doubt they want to bake electrical tape on 2 new trucks.
@@johnmoore1495 Then don't leave it on for more than a day. No problem. It's nothing more than matte black vinyl with some temporary adhesive. Vinyl with adhesive... Should sound very familiar.
The WeatherTech sunshade is even more effective. Though it's more expensive and it rolls up which makes it not as portable.
Come to Bama. Only thing a shade helps is your dash not to wear out. It still is gonna get hot. So far from experience the best result is tiny your windows but not too dark and have a tint along the top of your windshield. My f150 is always cooler than any other vehicle I get in with the same kind of interior and I believe that’s why
In Dubai where I used to live and I’m from it doesn’t matter. In the summer it’s 130F so doesn’t matter. In the US we don’t get a lot of sunny days and the weather is cool.
Try those widow vent fans that you roll up and wedge I always do far if those really work or not
What about cracking your windows with the smoker shade add ons
Is it me or is there 2 commercials being played now instead of 1
Yep CZcams is getting more greedy
CZcams red has changed my life I forgot they even had adds on here...
Julian 7160 yeah changed your life by making you more poor
Tinted windows get very hot to the touch, so do they cause in increase in interior temp? Clear glass never gets hot to the touch.
As a Texan, I can promise you they work. When I use it before work I can just get in and leave immediately. If I don’t use it, I have to crank the AC and leave the doors open a few minutes before I get in.
Folks, forget about a reduction in temperature inside the vehicle -- you use a sun shade on the windshield to keep the hot sun off the dash and seats. Without one, you get in and the dashboard is burning hot and so are the seat backs. On older cars, this is why you get cracks and damage. On newer cars, the materials withstand the heat better but over time you get fading. You can make your own sun shades with material from Lowe's or Home Depot or Menard's somewhere similar.
I would like to see another test with the 2 trucks. Another CZcamsr, Bob Wells?, said the interior sun shades allow the thermal energy to enter the truck, bounce off the sun shade, but does not exit the windshield so some heating of the vehicle does occur. Please perform a test with a sunshield on the interior of one truck and a external windshield cover on the other truck.
It appears that one of the trucks in this test has a black interior, while the other has a light interior. In Colorado the daily summer temperature typically doesn't exceed the low 90s and the humidity is low. So if your car is hot from sitting in the sun, you just open your windows and the problem is quickly solved. But if you live in the South (ex: Alabama), the low 90s is a cool day. Some vehicle manufacturers, specifically VW, use interior glue that can't handle the heat experienced by being left in the Southern sun. After about 5 years the headliner fabric separates and drops and the fabric delaminates from the door panels. Sun shades don't seem to prevent this problem from occurring.
Did you say fried eggs? I'd like mine over easy with crisp bacon, white toast with plenty of butter. Thank you very much.
How about testing the truck with the front window shade with auto venshades (AVS)? You can test the same vehicle with widows closed and then test again with windows open 1.5 inches with the auto ventshades. Hopefully the ventshades will let the air circulate some to let the heat out.
I’d be interested in finding out of panoramic sunroofs are hotter, louder than no sunroof at all. Seems the high end models all have them but some seem louder inside.
Why is he wearing a damn sweater
Do you think Roman is hot?
Because Roman, just don't care!
