It's an incredible literary experience at any rate. These new films are basically pretty good but they totally whiff on the Dune aesthetic. Everything is too antiseptic and monochromatic where Herbert intended his universe to resemble 19th century aristocrats in space with all the colorful costumery and pomp that implies. The desaturated environments and simplistic costumes don't feel very "Dune" to me. Maybe I will pleasantly surprised when I see Part 2 but I doubt it.

    • @maazahmed506

@unk4790 I think that has to do with the massive burden that has been placed on Villeneuve's shoulder by both the book's fans and the studio. He's not only trying to appease to the book fans but also making the very niche lore of Dune more accessible to the casuals so that the movie makes money because this is obviously not a charity fair and making movies is a business model at the end of the day.
What pisses me off however is Villeneuve's restrain. He's so terrified that he'll kill the pacing of the movie if he goes all out that he harshly edits out hours worth of scenes from his original cuts that affect the movie negatively. The first Dune was plagued by this problem and the second one is too but to a lesser extent. I hope this movie performs so well at the box office that WB urges Villeneuve to release extended cuts for his Dune movies with at least an hour or two of added runtime. I think that will most certainly mitigate many of the issues that can be found in both of his Dune movies.

It was a tragic moment in the books when their son dies but it really existed to further demonstrate how detached Paul was becoming due to his visions of the future because he knew that their son would die ahead of time and he acts extremely cold when their son dies, only showing the subtlest hints of mourning/rage. Part Two does a good job of making up for that by making it very clear how cold and calculating Paul become after he gains full control of his powers as there is a stark contrast between him prior to and after drinking the water of life.

It is so rare to see movies like the Dune films, where every department of the films is just firing on all cylinders. From the cinematography, to the acting, to the soundtrack, to the set design, to the choreograpy, to the VFX, etc., etc., every part of these movies have been excellent and its so hard to find flaws in them. These movies have been a masterclass in filmmaking and I'm so excited to see how they approach the next entry in the series because we very well could get a trilogy the likes of which we haven't seen since Jackson's Lord of the Rings' movies.

If only. What people don’t realise is that adding deleted scenes and unused footage back in takes a lot of time and money to finish off the special effects work, it’s almost like making a whole movie all over again, and since Denis has a strong no deleted/extended scenes policy, it’s safe to say we’ll never see any of the extra stuff that was cut from the theatrical release, which is heart breaking. Even if we got an extra half hour of footage in the home release, it would amazing 😢

@@MoonWeasel23 Yes actually, that is true. About an hour or two worth of scenes were cut out in the first part one alone. Scenes that added so much depth to the characters and political intrigue to the story. I also believe that the inclusion of these scenes although would've increased the runtime of the movie, they would've kept the audiences more engaged across the span of the entire movie and eliminated most of the complains of the movie feeling dry or too slow.
It's hard to believe that part two wasn't flattened in the editing process either. Specially when Villeneuve himself confessed that he got rid of all the scenes involving Mentats (which includes Thufir Hawat and Hasimir Fenring) in the second movie because he wanted to direct the focus at the Bene Gesserit and Paul's journey. No can tell what else he chopped in the post-production.
Denis has been quite steadfast over his stance on not releasing the deleted scenes or extended cuts but I hope that the success of Dune two can urge the studio into convincing him to do otherwise.

Watched it twice in Imax. It’s my new favourite film ever made.
The darkest moments are the ones that really seal the deal for me. “Target the weakest.” “Lead them to paradise.” “Grandfather, you die like an animal.” The Fremen being the ones burning the mountains of bodies at the end…

5:26 Which makes it better, because D.V. knows when to cut and not overstay a scene's welcome, whereas P.J. has never met a scene that he wants to cut, resulting in a frankly tiring and repetitive battle scene that quickly becomes dull.

Just got back from seeing Dune pt2. Its an incredible experience in the theater. Excellent Direction, Cast/acting, script, and plot. But the best thing about this movie is the excellent sound production, music, and lackthereof when it doesn't need it. Its the best theater experience I've had in years.
