Excellent review. I have 7.1.4 Sopras up front and utopia Inwalls on my surrounds and atmos and you have described them exactly as I thought. The sopras upfront are so close to utopias. It's just even more refinement per dollar goes up if someone is into that. Either way that detail if you are into it is stunning.

I've had the pleasure of auditioning the Kanta, Sopra, and the entire Utopia line including the Grande, but never this center channel. Except for the Kanta the premier Focal lines are excellent. However, For a great performance to value I'd say that the Paradigm Persona line, which has Beryllium tweeters and midrange will deliver very close to Focal premier line. Thanks Shane.
I would love to see you review the new 700 series from bowers and wilkins. I heard them in best buy and was blown away. Would like to see what you thought of them in the home theater space

Very good review but out of curiosity what would a good home theater speaker set up be for close to 1 grand? For a good while I have been using Polk audio speakers and while yeah they are still good, I have been looking to upgrade.

Good point on hearing differences between electronics. I usually say that people who say there are no differences, have not lived with a B&W 800 series speaker :-)

Focal speakers are probably one of the best...., if not the best for imaging, soundstage etc. I love focal expensive, insanely detailed and bright sound! Shane, what brand you think comes close to Focal in any price range?
Hi. I had the Utopias floor standing with the center channel (previous model) before. Ive heard the grand utopia also. They sound bright (but rarely too much) and clear. Where they lack however is off-axis response. Its a result of the inverted tweeter design. I never got the dynamics I wanted from them either, they are somewhat easy and laidback in their presentation. They sure look good tough, and with some type of music (and good recordings) - they sound brilliant. Female vocals in good recording can be really high end.
I tried several amps, and played with Dirac. Choice of amp make a big difference indeed, so did EQ, as you can tame them a little bit.
I have active Adam Audio speakers now. More expensive, but they stomp Utopia in room integration, dynamics and generell sound quality. And they are not picky about the music. The AMT tweeter and mid base is almost as detailed, but more forgiving, have an excellent off axis respons and is way more dynamical in every sense. I think the Focals try to push out the details too much, and that goes to compromise on several types of music - normaly summed up by reviewers as "not forgiving".
I know there are other great alternatives also, but they probably do not have the budget for marketing as Klipsch, B&W, Focal etc. ;)
You need to let utopia break in Vitus HQ uses them and says thousands of hrs. Mine took well over a year and no fatigue on anything and dynamics are insane

Awesome review! I would like some advice for new speakers. Im looking at the Martin Logan ESL and ESL C. Or the new Focal 301 as LCR. Which ones will give the best sound immersion closer to the theater.

I’d say they are still a tad brighter than the D4’s. The D4’s were one of my fav speakers I’ve reviewed. I wouldn’t mind owning a pair.

@michaelalfredson4246 if you had to do it again, would you do LCR in Vivas or would you lean towards Scala/Maestro for LR? and Why? trying to make a decision here ... I feel the speaker cone differences + subs will complement each other more. Viva's are 1"/6"/8" with 13" subs, versus 1"/6"/11" on Scala/Maestro with same dual JL F113v2. Thoughts?

We’re these speakers brand new? Sometimes they need a bit of a break in period which may explain the brightness? Great video with some great Focals. That centre though….wow!!!!
They were new but after 3 months they became old 😁😉 Yes the center channel is crazy.

I find focal to be too bright for my ears, its awesome for electronic music but i much prefer sonus faber for that natural and warmer sound.
Shane, haven't you been eating your Wheaties lately? You are complaining about how heavy the center channel is, yet you were able to lift subwoofers totaling over 400 LBS.

These are the budget utopias.
In my opinion, similar brands like focal sound better for music, I don't like movies to sound too clean, I like a bit of noise pollution, I don't think focal is for movies, I think brands like JTR PSa Mtm Klipsch are ideal for movies
These speakers are heavily damped - You need to break them In they take thousands of hours to tame and then they turn sopra to dust - no fatigue (smoother in fact) more bass mic detail the lot …you’re experiencing just what I did with my Scalas for a year & I was crying and wanted my sopra 2 back and now they are blowing the Sopras away…
