  • The first thing that stood out to me was the magical sound of that 12 string guitar, with some really elegant, delicant chord-work by the one and only Sir Brian May. Freddie's vocals complemented the guitar so well, and his subtle variations in vocal delivery really exemplify the emotions evoked by the song. When I started putting the pieces of his vocals together at the end I could barely hold it in. This is is pure art, pure poetry, pure love!

In Rock in Rio 250,000 in attendance sign the song to Freddie.

Brian now plays and singsthis during their shows. On the last verse after he's asked everyone to turn on their phone's lights, Freddie comes on screen and sings the last verse. It's very emotional. If you get a chance, look up a recent video. They just finished their US tour and it was incredible. Freddie was celebrated during every minute.

I love how Freddie sings not only by the vocal chords, but with his whole body. Great reaction, thank you.

Freddie wanted to be able to perform this song live but the original version was too elaborate to do so. Freddie asked Brian to design an arrangement that would be able to be performed live and this is what he wrote. This version is still used in shows today and all of the crowds still sing along, Brian is a master at creating emotion with his guitar choices. He says he has always thought of his guitar as his voice and that is so apparent with this performance. Thank you for a great reaction.

Freddie was able to use his vestibular folds as well as his vocal cords to sing which accounts for some of the differences you are hearing when he sings. I'm not sure if any other singers can do that. LOVE this song, watch the video of it in Rio... the audience chants Brian's name.

Thank you for your thorough review from a musician's perspective and from the enthusiasm and appreciation of the finer details. Well done. Congratulations on your new relationship as well.
Freddie said he wrote this for Mary Austin, partner for 6 years, and life-long friend, whom he referenced as his common law wife. She has cared for his estate faithfully for all these years, until auctioning at Sotheby's in September. She is in her 70's now.

Freddie never said, that this song is written to or about Mary. It's still a question, there are theories only.

This song is so beautiful that all its performances are magical, but if you want to see great interaction with the public you need to check out this song at Rock in Rio 1985, around 300,000 people sang practically the entire song for Freddie and Brian, that was unique ❤

Brian is wonderful here … … Freddie wrote this amazing song and knew how it should sound blending Brian’s guitar with Freddie’s voice. Seems like a simple little love song but it’s perfection and not so simple at all. If you want to see and hear something amazing watch Freddie and Brian do this song Live in Rio with 250 thousand people singing back to Freddie and Brian and chanting Brian Brian Brian when Freddie takes his short break… and keep in mind English was not their first language 🥰💛💛💛

Wow, you’re right it sounds deceptively simple when there’s a lot of nuances to it. I’ll have to hear the version from rio!

This is such a sad but lovely song. Please listen to the studio version, also. It is loaded with instrumentation and harmonies. Freddie wanted harp so Brian learned to play harp!

Subscribed! Great reaction! The Rock in Rio performance is just as moving… 250,000+ non-English speakers singing the song to Freddie 💛 The studio version is very different. Brian learned to play the harp and John played the upright bass..and the spectacular Queen layers and harmonies. Such a beautiful song

Thanks so much! Brian was indeed a guitar genius.. but I hope you get into some of his vocals, as well.... not just with Queen... appreciate your reaction! (p.s. the album version was based on Freddie's piano, but Brian also learned to play HARP for it)

Freddie wrote “Love Of My Life” in 1975 while still living with Mary Austin. However, it’s said that he wrote the song as a tribute to Mary, who was a significant person in his life. He also referred to her as the love of his life. In a 1985 interview, Freddie stated that he wrote the song for “someone very close to him” and that it was “very personal.” He never mentions David Minns in the interview specifically. It’s possible that Minns publicly claimed that the song was written for him, but it’s not clear. The true inspiration for the song will remain a mystery, forever .. yeah forever! IMO?? I think the song was written from Mary’s point of view .. just sayin’ 🤔

Hi Debra, I am inclined to think that the song was written for Mary too, but I think it is from Freddie's POV because he was so afraid that Mary would leave him that he bought her a house across the street from him where he could see into her home from his window when they split up, and also hired her to be his personal secretary and assistant so she would be with him always even when touring. Freddie did say to Mary that the reason he was leaving the bulk of his estate to her was because if things had gone as he had wanted them to, she would have been his wife and it would have all been hers anyway. Freddie definitely loved Mary and I think the reason he came out to her as "bisexual" was because he was hanging on to the hope that she might somehow be okay with him leading a double life and that she would not leave him. Many claim that Mary was just a beard but I have never believed that for a moment. He told all the men in his life that they could never replace Mary, so there is that too. Either way, the mystery of the "person" in this song remains to this day.

@@sherryheim5504 Yessss totally agree, too! I often get trolls who comment that the song is for Freddie’s fans (that doesn’t make sense) or the song was written for David Minns (nope, don’t think so) .. it’s definitely with Mary in mind!! Thank you!

hey if you want to see Freddie in his vocal prime, you should react to Queen performing "Now I'm Here" live at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1979. In my opinion its the bands most energetic and fun performance, definitely a must watch.
