  • Wild camping with a bivvy bivouac bag in rain and misty weather
    My original plan was just to use the MLD FKT bivvy bag and no tarp, as it happened I had just received my DCF Monk tarp so thought let's play pitching it so it gave a bit of cover but given it was facing wrong way it gave very little to no actual cover against rain ingress and I had to do it up or try to do it up... Bivvy bags are ok if used under a tarp. Having it fully zipped up is an issue - not only for condensation but if you start farting you'll end up gassing yourself...😂

    Huck Middeke suggests that we should sleep with the sleeping bag/bivi snugged up around our necks with a balaclava and hat as necessary. This allows you to turn over etc without heat loss and avoids moisture building up inside your bag/bivi.

    Its called anxiety. no doubt brought on by the thought of being clubbed in the night confined in a body bag.
    Yea, thats how I feel so keep my head outside no matter what.
    Good tarp always handy when using a bivi.

      Ever since I woke up in the small hours to the sound of someone playing with themselves outside my tent, I`ve always used a tarp in order to be able to quickly confront any weirdo I might encounter. I was in a small 2 man tent at the time and thought if the guy hears me pulling door zippers open, he could simply pull out a couple of pegs and make the tent collapse with me stuck inside like a fish caught in a net, so I waited until he left before looking around for him (didn`t find him unfortunately).

      @@HelmutSchmacker. You really need to camp far away from everyone

  • @thedaftestnameicouldthinko8233

    As you know, the Soul bivvy has a zip-in piece of mosquito netting. With that in place, I'm happy to close the bivvy bag. I've never tried sleeping without using it because I always have a tarp or a Trailstar to block the wind when I'm bivvying so rain is unlikely to get me. On my most recent outing, I was woken at 4am when an updraught blew, for a few minutes, straight through the mosquito netting. I rarely close my sleeping bag (inside the bivvy bag or in a tent) because my breath condenses on the outer fabric if I do. There was no condensation anywhere when I was rudely awakened by that 30mph blast coming straight uo the cliffs off the North Atlantic.
    How much mat do we really need on soft British turf? I'm stunned by what people carry these days - two mats, one of them inflatable, and a blow up pillow weighing on its own as much as my Pocket tarp. I started camping back in 1968. Karrimats might have been invented by them but, if so, I hadn't heard about it so I slept matless and continued doing that until I discovered bothies with their hard sleeping surfaces. I have a NeoAir and an Apex Thermarest, respectively for summer and winter bothy trips, but I usually just take a torso sized piece of foam matting. It's enough if the turf is good. One significant benefit of a piece of closed-cell foam is that it tends to reduce the amount of movement of the bivvy in the night. Using the NeoAir inside an MLD Bug Bivvy, I tended to wake with the NeoAir on top of me. That doesn't happen with foam.
    BTW, does anyone know how to spell bivvy? My spell checker objects to everything I've tried, including bivy and bivi.

    • @TonyHobbs
      @TonyHobbs  Před 29 dny

      I'm a southern softie I definitely need an air mat or similar lol absolutely agree you probably seen all my Soul eVent bivy bivvy bivi who knows lol camps mesh is perfect. I never use it under a full tarp not needed imo but as part of a tarp over head set up it's perfect. The MLD SUL bivys are perfect for a full tarp . Some do like just foam but not for me lol

    I've got a highlander hawk bivvy bag with a bug net that you zip in. I haven't used it yet. I'm a bit worried about the amount of times I will have to get out of it in the night for a pee now that I have have turned 53 my bladder isn't what it used to be 😮😢😅

      I'm 52 and basically stand up and stand on bivy usually foot end and go overboard saves shoes or hassles just careful with drips but tbh I don't worry if odd drop lands just give rinse at home and or rain helps. Same in tent I go in porch. Just no real need to get out. Poops different 😆
