Lakeside Organic Gardens had no input in the making of this episode, nor did any money change hands.
What the farmer said right there, what they throw away can end world hunger, is not an exaggeration. We have developed insanely unrealistic expectations of food while knowing next to nothing about what they are and how they grow. This kind of habit have made sustainable agriculture very difficult. What is sustainable when the farmers cant sell most of the products because of their look and have to throw them out? Food should be valued by its nutritional values rather than psychological values, that is born from ignorance.
I like this series because I study agriculture and I know that society is in dire need of knowledge about agriculture.
YES YES YES!!!!! I'm on a mission to bring our (consumers') expectations into reality. We just don't know better. I'm hoping to share what I learn.
I agree with some of what you're saying, but I also want to mention that a grown crop should never be wasted even if it isn't directly becoming human food. Since the farm in this video is still importing manure to fertilize their field I doubt that they have any truly significant amount of waste (or maybe they just like to double down on their fertilization). All of my crop residue is chopped, blended and fed back to the soil and the crop residues themselves are sufficient to keep the field continuously fertile without external inputs. Composted crop residue has nearly the same NPK as composted poultry manure (I imagine the penguin poop has some similarity as well, not that NPK is the only deciding factor). I never have anything to throw out just things to recycle, which is more beneficial than it is wasteful.
It is knowledge that's needed. Everyone can grow their own food as long as they know how, and if they don't want to eat cauliflower that's any color other than white or any carrot that isn't orange and straight then they don't have to. They can cycle damaged or ugly crops back through the conversion cycle, and only grow the varieties that they want to eat. The farmer's in California can't end world hunger no matter how much food they grow or discard. It's the hungry people all over the world that will have to end the hunger for themselves in their own communities; they just need the knowledge and the confidence to act.
I agree.. so much with u.. its the cost to take them to hunger nd poverty stricken places.. its just cheaper for the farmers to throw the vegetables away
Great comment. I love it when a video talks about food waste. For many years this wasn't talked about.
TRUE FOOD TV We need to make you famous girl!!!!
That yellow cauliflower was absolutely beautiful!
I agree!
I would gladly buy one of them
@@patricksarama4963 As would I!
Yeah it was
Might have more nutrients too. I mean, sun bath, why not?
Even the Farmer said it... "the amount of crop they have to throw away because of cosmetic reasons, they could end world hunger" thats how crazy society has become
If thats true that it could end world hunger someone with authority like a president should load all the edible rejects in a cargo plane and send it in a thired world country to feed that country for a day, but then again who will pay for the fuel, pilot and personel to ship, pack, and send it to that country? I guess the cost cancells out the good
As a vegetable farmer, I can attest to this. I grow Rutabaga and sell about 60% of the crop. the remaining 40% is partially left in field due to cosmetic damage and cost of grading out damage vs marketable, and the rest is graded out at processing time due. it is 100% edible and rots in a pile every year.
He said, "In California (alone).." And yet, they continue to throw it away instead of attempting to end world hunger.
Why don’t they donate it or ship it overseas? I’m sure people in other countries or the homeless or poor people in our country would not be that picky.
i wouldent mind eating yellow
I think the yellow cauliflower looked better than the white. Buyers should start asking for yellow, folks would buy it out of curiosity.
Me too I thought it was beautiful!
inkydoug I sure wouldn't all the chemicals and wild animal feces on them disgusting
i like the yellow and white coliflowers i hope they can hybrid to make a light yellow coliflower
When I have mashed cauliflower to mimic mashed potatoes, yellow is great.
it's ok to boil cauliflower. you just need to give it enough attention, and not leaving it to cook for an hour
steaming is best!
Boiled cauliflower is a great substitute for mashed potatoes. Many people will be fooled if you don't tell them.
HKim0072 exactly. That's all my family eats, and if you through a little bit of instant mashed potato mix in there, it really brings it together.
Yup, I dunno how many minutes I boil it (10?), just cooked enough not to be hard.
10-15mins is fine. What we do in my country (Czech Republic) is par boil them for like 5-7mins, then triple coat with flour, beaten egg and then seasoned breadcrumbs, then deep fry them, serve with boiled potatoes and tartar sauce. Delicious :P
this channel deserves more views
yeh baby
Thank you! We're trying. Thanks for helping spread the word!
While this might be true, it is not doing bad for a channel that has only produced ~20 videos within the past 12 month span, as well as considering the type of video it is. As it is more informational that entertainment, it will, sadly, get fewer views than it should overall; yet it has received a surprisingly decent number of views, considering the subject matter.
Give it time, and I am sure that people who care about more than just buying food of convenience will continue growing the channel and subscription growth rate. The best things come over time, and this channel produces good content, as I can tell from the three videos I have just watched this morning.
Method Man I agree , I'm very surprised that she doesn't have more subscribers.
But she will 👍🏽
Method Man no it doesnt
"What we throw away in California for cosmetic reasons could end world hunger" -___________-
I have a dream that one day, my video presentations will be as peaceful as y'all's, but then again I will first have to move away from the beach, hahaha.
This was absolutely perfect in terms of info and presentation. Thanks indeed.
Where I live (Canada) we sell different colours of cauliflower. Esthetically, it's quite pleasing to see a variety of color within the same veggie.
I love purple cauliflower!
Thank you to all farmers! As someone who has my own garden, I can't imagine the work going into a massive farms that support our country. So thank you farmers for all you do...( and thank you semi truck drivers for getting it to the stores). I appreciate you more than you know.
2:50 wait, what!?! I had no idea! I'd buy it yellow.
Wow that ladybug and natural soap pesticide is great! Better than roundup! That's for sure!
1surftheblue Roundup is a herbicide. The integrated pest management systems shown in the video are for insect control.
Timothy is correct, Roundup is a herbicide and has zero affect on insects. Organic farms must also use herbicides but are limited to ones from the mid 60's like copper sulphate which are 186 times more toxic than Roundup.
@Bam Vill it's most definitely true that Organic Farms often use up to three times more chemicals per acre than your standard Farm! Like was already pointed out the only difference is they Source their pesticides from things that are quote-unquote natural! Now in the end many of these chemicals are still exactly what they sound like they are ....poisonous and some of it has turned out to be even worse for you than regular chemicals. For many years the most popular organic pesticide was rotenone but it has sense been banned in the North America and Europe finally followed a couple years ago because the stuff is seriously bad for you. Worse yet because the chemicals they use are not designed for the purpose they're being used for they have a tendency to kill far more secondary animals that they're not targeting and they have to use significantly more of them to get the job done that's the reason why they end up dumping more on the fields the non organic farmers. About the only organic farmers that can really get by without using any chemicals are the really small 1 2 and 3 Acre Mom and Pop type set up for they can go out there and Target the weeds and pests by hand.
Jacy LB, Roundup is a non selective herbicide not an insecticide 🐞🐞
Well Jacy LB, you just informed us all that you know nothing about farming or gardening. You just spout the usual diatribe from the poorly informed left.
wonderfully informative.. proud to inform you we're aiming to utilize your education in Tanzania
That's terrific news! Keep me posted on how it goes.
"What we throw away for cosmetic reasons could end world hunger" mother of god what are we doing??
You can boil it! Just not long! It has to be timed at around 5 mins. Cauliflower is expensive here so I buy them on sale. They are usually a crumbly partially rotting mess by then. I cut it into 4 pieces and clean them, then boil them for a bit then keep them in the fridge for future use. Frozen is cheaper but those are always a mushy mess :( Cauliflower with olive oil, garlic, and grated parmesan is my favorite!
Mmmm, olive oil, garlic and parmesan -- sounds delicious!
Wow, you are a precious lady. I gotta try the baked Cauliflower. I bake okra, but didn't know about the CF. Thanks!
Always interesting to know how your food is produced! 👍
One of my favorite ways to prep it is steam boiled, then just add some herbal salt (and maybe a little coconut oil), omnomnom!!
Ya’ll should search for roasted cauliflower head, so damn good! 😊
Watching while eating a curry with cauliflower in it
imagine all their works, just not to make it yellow. wtf, now i WANT a yellow cauliflower!
andrea giudici if you have even a small patio you can grow it yourself in pots 💕 purple, yellow, orange and more!
Fascinating series. It's 1.30am and I cant stop watching these vids!
Woohoo! Keep watching! ;)
its very delicious added in Soup
You have such a healthy glowing skin
LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!! Wondered if you ever considered a show on how and where horse radish is grown? Keep up the great videos. Most appreciated, you guys have great production skills! LC
I'd love to do horseradish - it's on the list! Thanks for watching and for the lovely feedback.
@@TrueFoodTV how about mustard?
Did anyone hear, " what we throughout we could end world hunger".
Great video. I learned alot
we use ladybugs in our greenhouse, so true, works great for brassicas
How many ladybugs do you us in relation to the number of plants you grow?
Hey. You came to visit us. I’m about 45min from Watsonville-lots of good veggies here. Castroville has artichokes. Watsonville has strawberries. So much ag. You could do tons of shows around that area.
they should still sell food that doesn't look the same but for 50% off so we just dont throw it away
Great idea. Though it may not be cost effective for the farmer -- at 50% off, after the store gets their cut, it might not be worth it for the farmer, unfortunately.
Maybe just donate it for a tax write off
Checkout Imperfect Produce!
Just getting it to the store costs money
You can buy "ugly vegetables" in some supermarkets in France. They are not half the price though, just cheaper.
Boil some potatoes, add some cauliflower. When they're about 5 to 10 minutes to be ready, add some pieces of cod (one, maybe two, per person). Put a frying pan on the fire with (proportions to taste) a good amount of olive oil and two or three chopped cloves of garlic, when they're starting to become transparent, add one or two teaspoons of paprika (smoked paprika is my choice). You may try spicy paprika but it's a risk if you put too much, try a little tiny bit of spicy paprika and the rest non spicy one. Mix with the oil and garlic while you add some wine vinegar (it will create some vapor). Turn the heat off completely. Serve the cod, potatoes and cauliflower with this just made sauce from the frying pan.
It's, with variations, a tradional dish on Christmas Eve in Northwest Spain.
If the growers could find a way to market **yellow** cauliflower, they would immediately cut down on waste and make a tidy sum. It would be similar to other plants that vary in colour, like capsicum (bell pepper).
Yes!
It should be called 'golden cauliflower'. Along with some bullshit claims about its superior health benefits vs white cauliflower.
Golden cauli, even w/o bullshit claims, would be great
I love growing cauliflower in my garden :) its the best
lots of protein
what he said about ending world hunger with our waste made me cry
It's amazing, isn't it? One of the most important issues of our day!
A channel showing beaitiful natural food with the beautiful host. .. love the combination. .....👍👍👍
Thank you!
Add potato pieces, gew garlic cloves and onions along with cauliflower in the oven. Then cook them a bit with salt, pepper and herbs. Serve with bread or plain rice.
Sounds wonderful! Thank you for the recommendation!
Sunita Gupta That sounds yummy.
Love your work. If cauliflower is fit for a king you are truly a queen.
Cauliflower is awesome! Great video!
Thank you!
The leaves they cut off have a wonderful flavor and cauliflower ferments (lacto-bacillus) beautifully in salt water with beets, onions, etc.!
Very informative , grand performance, an angelly face
angelly lol
Just found out about you and we are hooked! We are based in New England and would love to show you some farms we work with.
I am watching and eating Qualiflower right now .... xD
I love eating the stalks of cauliflower! After peeli g away the tough skin its soo good!
i like my cauliflower soft. but could give baking a try
I find it delicious with Catalina dressing.
This is only my second video from your channel and I'm loving them so far. You're informative; I feel comfortable and not bored listening to you. Beautiful video work as well. Keep up the amazing job.
Thank you!
What's wrong with boiled cauliflower ! I love it
you losse the nutrients
Nice presentation. I liked the way you speak out pronounce. So crisp and clear. Nice voice too. Frankly speaking liked everything about this lady....
My favorite vegetable
Yeah!! cauliflower forever!
When you always boil or steam cauliflower...
I like it that way.
I love your voice. Your videoes have been inspiring me to improve my listening skill, but they have no subtitles, it is hard for me. So would you mind adding subtitles for the next your videoes?. Thank you so much!
YES! We're planning to have subtitles starting with the next video. Thank YOU for watching!
So glad you (and your husband) are doing and have done these series' and this work.
I have to move somewhere where I can grow my own food
When I was a kid I thought cauliflower was “Cali Flower” since California grows tons of em. Lol.
Not sure how I ended up here, but this channel is great
Glad you found us!
Lol I ended up on a mushroom episode just looking for umbrella design ideas... I completely forgot about that until now 😅
Steamed cauliflower keeps all the nutrients, where when boiled, you cook them out. I prefer my cauliflower steamed as preparation and than Dutch style in to a mixture of mincemeat, onion and the cauliflower (+ some spices) in an ovendish, potato slices on top, some creme fraiche and cheese on top and then baking for 30 min. Best dish ever!
Keep making vids :)
+Joel Palo Working on it! ;)
I've always had it steamed/boiled. It tastes Soo good with cheese sauce on it!
try it with sauce hollandaise^^
"What we throw out for cosmetic reasons could end world hunger" mind blown
this is by far my favorite veggie... I dont bake mine in the oven though.. I boil(or steam) the cauliflower until it just starts to become soft on the outside. Then i grab a huge piece of Parmesan cheese and cheddar cheese and make a thick cheese sauce from it. I pour the cheese over the warm cauliflower and cover it up so the cauliflower becomes a little softer but not mushy under its own heat... then eat while still warm.. its food for a king alright... a Vi-King.. :)
Very Informative !!
Are you kidding me? I bought the cauliflower because it was yellow and looked so unique. I will sample the purple next. Glad to have happened upon this channel!
Uhh, if the only thing that tractor is spraying on that field at 2:00 is a natural soap spray, then why is the guy dressed up like he's travelling through Chernobyl?
+Daniel S That's the exact kind of observation we love! And this is the kind of conversation we hope our videos inspire. Question everything! We report, you decide. ;)
+How Does it Grow? Gotchya ;)
I would imagine that it's concentrated and the volume they're spraying would not be healthy for the tractor operator to ingest. The contents of the spray is likely washed away in short time with rainfall etc, so the effects aren't passed on to the plant.
Just a minorly-educated guess, but it is interesting!
He is dressed that way because he is doing it all day. All he is wearing is a thin Tyvek suit and a full face mask. He is getting misted with soap for hours at a time. Especially in a tail wind. Do you like soap in you eyes, nose and mouth?
No, I don't like it.
I Love it.
I am so glad I found your channel! New sub. This was a great episode. I live and grew up in the Salinas Valley. Only about 30 minutes outside of Watsonville actually. I have seen firsthand the amount of food that is thrown out and wasted by countless farms throughout the valley. It is truly sad. Simply because it is "ugly". Awesome channel and videos. Keep it up please!
AND, it's friggin delicious.
Agreed!
I would buy yellow cauliflower. I use cauliflower to make a mashed potato substitute sometimes and that would look fun yellow. I also make mashed potatoes with purple sweet potatoes and they make a hilariously cartoonish purple when mashed. I love it!
Another awesome video!
Very informative and you truly are a natural at this 👍🏽
I truly enjoy your channel thanks.
Thank you so much, David - means a lot!
Stumbled onto your videos by mistake, but I'm glad I did. Very informative. Thank you.
So glad you found us!
I love you, I watch your videos mostly because you're cute. 😂Thank you for helping my food production projects :')
Ya all can i come and collect the cut off leaves i love them!
u your so informative and I like how you give the informative jokes at the end😁
Thank you!
Your welcome
And it's really funny it makes me and my brother laugh
Keep it up! This show is a great service to humanity!
Thank you so much!
I never liked white cauliflower because it just looks like it lacks nutrition. I was so happy to see yellow cauliflower at a farmers market once, that's what I bought. I will not buy white cauliflower.
The makers of these videos should have them shown in schools.
Would yellow cauliflower be more nutritious than white cauliflower?
I think there would be more phytonutrients!
@@TrueFoodTV Please stop the wild idea that importing penguin manure is in any way sustainable. Picture the penguin manure boarding an airplane and flying all the way here, or taking a boat. Not sustainable at all. It's bad practice. If this farm knew what they were doing they'd have other organic manure produced on site from other animals and not need to import manure. That's literally silly. Ordering poop when their own waste product from the plant could either compost or feed other animals who make manure on site. This farm is limited in mentality. It happens with the third to fifth gen farmers. "Well, that's how we do it." Yeah, well, you could create a closed loop sustainable system but you're being silly as all get out. How many workers work those fields? No google nutrient content of human urine. In case those farmers are still to scared to raise a few animals off of products they discard.
Roasted cauliflower, roasted enoki mushrooms and roasted cherry tomatoes served on rice are one of my favourite summer foods EVER!
Oh my, that sounds amazing!!
TRUE FOOD - How Does it Grow? It is! You should try it :) It's stunning! Also thanks for the great content How Does It Grow!
"Dont boil it" WTF! Broccoli and cauliflower are among my favorite foods. Best way to prepare is to boil them together with instant rice then drain and add cheese. I usually eat with fish. Doesnt get much better or healthier.
You do loose a small amount of nutrients by boiling/draining, but the flavor is fantastic well worth the loss. Besides you can always add a small salad on the side to make up for it (I never have). Broccoli and cauliflower were made to be boiled. Dew to how good it taste way more people will eat it boiled than fresh. Which is good because even boiled its still extremely healthy.
Turns mushy when you boil it? How long you boil it for, for that to happen? Throw it in boiling water for 8 minuts, it and other veggies are still crunchy but much better tasting.
End of rant!
Agreed. But steaming has to be better in my opinion. One can always steam multi ingredients, and I always use the nutrient rich liquor in whatever sauce or gravy I'm going to make. All down to personal preference I suppose. I like my cauli with a bit of crunch. When I was a nipper in the '50s (UK) all our veg was boiled to mush. I mean everything. I'm chuffed to discover the pleasure, at last, of the flavours and textures of our everyday veggies!!
She is gorgious and intelligent and eloquent hubby is lucky
omg your eyes... i'm not even pay attention... i'm going to start the video again... so interesting!
Your gardening tips are priceless Thank you
leave the leaves on you fools!!
Joshua bentley id imagine the leaves would just rot and go to waste if consumers got it , im sure they use the leaves in some sort of fertilizer or compost , better than going into the trash
The oven cooked Cauliflower is like popcorn if dressed with butter.
Thanks for such great video. I didn't know much that trick about having lady bugs to kill other bugs. I really hope more people will watch this channel, so we will much appreciate where foods come from.
I boil my cauliflower all the time 😂
No shame! But give the roasting a shot -- you might like it. ;)
One of my favorite cauliflower dishes Include boiled cauliflower and they’re still delicious
Nice
Like some have commented, this channel deserves way more views and attention. For the tens of videos I have watched on this channel, the videos are professionally done, excellent presentation, and very informative (but brief and focus). Liked +++++
Thank you so much! Your support means everything to us.
Does the soap water hurt destroy the ladybugs as well?
Stevy B Great question! Yes, it does. That's why they try to use the soap spray sparingly, and time it when they havent released ladybugs into the field.
Ahh... I see... Thanks for d reply. :)
You are teaching us to love the yellow (and waste less) my lovely friend! Another wonderful video! Cheers :D
Forgot cauliflower....u r so beautiful😘😅
Very well presented. I want to know more about time lapse and reasons florets not forming.

I live in Watsonville this video is awesome, thought I recognized the mountains in the background.
Wow, well spotted!
I'm watching this while eating cauliflower.
One head of cauliflower boiled to mush per one stick of butter. The best.
I have to say: that doesn't sound bad. ;)
i fall in love with this channel
Thank you!
I like these videos before they even begin
I know people who LOVE exotic looking fruit and veggies. Blows my mind that white cauliflower is the only one that gets sold!
Cauliflower in white sauce. Love it.
Caulifornia don't stop the party! ☼ ☼ ☼
Ohhh, I see what you did there!! Nice! ;)
One word to describe this vedio beautiful
You have a lovely way of presenting how things are grown! I subscribed!
