    Please click SHOW MORE!
    I drove about an hour or so to a junk yard to get a 2013 Nissan Leaf electric motor. (EM57)
    I decided to get the gearbox (transmission) and Inverter with it. This is really the entire Nissan Leaf driveline.
    I'm hoping to be able to use the motor on the electric tractor conversion project, but of course, the devil is in the details!

    Ha Ben love your vids so informative. I want to ev a Ford ranger 4x4 my question is I want to hook up a 35 ac hpevs induction motor. My thinking is I dont need a transmission the motor is 10k rpms to hook directly to the transfer case. Do you think I need a transmission.

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  Před 4 lety +3

      You don't need high SPEED to go straight to the driveline, you need high torque.
      A motor that spins at a lower speed, but with higher torque is a good match for a "direct drive" type setup.
      At home, I have an Azure Dynamics AC55. That motor is designed to go straight to a driveshaft. It was formerly mounted on a 13 passenger van. That motor provides 280 newton-meters peak torque, and 140Nm continuous torque. It also runs at 2,000 RPM nominal.
      Looks like the HPEV AC35 provides about 120 Nm peak and 55 Nm continuous. (Go to the following for charts: www.hpevs.com/hpevs-ac-electric-motors-power-graphs-ac-35.htm)
      In other words, it looks like an HPEV AC35 would provide about half as much torque as a motor that I know to be appropriate for direct driving a vehicle. Even then, it's not like the Azure Dynamics motor was squealing tires....
      It also looks like the AC35 peaks at about 82 horsepower. My old Chevy S10 had about a 100 HP 4-cylinder engine in it, and was fine for regular driving and light towing. I bet a lot of people would prefer more power in a truck.
      If you want to do a conversion with the AC35, you would want to use it with a transmission/gear-reduction. More likely than not, you would like a more powerful motor than that.
      A quick look through the EV Album shows that trucks using HPEV brand motors only used the AC50 or AC51 motors.
      www.evalbum.com/mtrbr/HPGC
      I think another really fun option for a 4x4 truck would be to buy TWO Nissan Leaf Motors with matching inverters and gearboxes. Put one on front, one on back. Boom! All electric 4x4. No transfer cases needed!

    • @twoeightythreez
      @twoeightythreez Před 4 lety +2

      If you use the LEAF gear reduction unit (just spool the diff) you could probably hook directly to the transfer case.

  • @1dh11
    @1dh11 Před 4 lety

    You will need a Govenor to maintain motor rpms as the load on the motor changes.
    Input shaft of the trany should turn close to the same rpms as it would do with the gas engine.

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  Před 4 lety +1

      The inverter converts DC power from the battery to variable frequency AC to turn the AC motor.

    Can you please tell me where I can find building instructions for the open Revolt five hundred amp and 1,000 amp speed controllers? The website has links that don't go anywhere. I'd really like to learn how to build speed controllers myself. Thanks

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  Před 4 lety +1

      Here's a download link of the files that I included on the ROM disc of the original BUILD YOUR OWN ELECTRIC CAR DVD set. It includes some information on the Open Revolt controller, including a 47 page assembly guide. Unfortunately, the Wiki is web-based, and most of the information for posted by individuals who did NOT maintain where the data was stored. Some of the links will work, some won't. It's a shame so much of that was lost.
      Try this link for the build document. spaces.hightail.com/space/yAgjus2F8L

    • @BenjaminNelsonX

      @@BenjaminNelsonX What was the purpose?

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  Před 4 lety +2

      @@inso5078 I couldn't tell you exactly why Nissan chose to make this look so similar to a gas engine setup. Perhaps it was just to make people more comfortable with electric motors. Maybe it worked better at their factories in terms of how the drivelines were handled and installed.
      An electric car really can be designed in so many ways. I'm sure that in the future we will have electric cars no longer limited by traditional automotive designs based on engines and driveshafts, but for now, electric cars will still pretty much look like the gasoline powered ones.

    Are you going to build a custom 3 phase controller or re-purpose the one that you bought with it?

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  Před 4 lety +2

      Building a 3-phase variable frequency drive from scratch would be beyond my skill level. However, there are a few ways to MODIFY the existing inverter to make it simpler to use with common DIY components. I'll probably be looking at either modifying the Leaf inverter, or possibly modifying a Chevy Volt inverter.

      @@FirstLast-tx3yj The Thunderstruck VCU just allows you to use the inverter and motor as though it were still in the Nissan Leaf. It's essentially stock. You can tweak the regenerative brakes and a few other tricks, but it doesn't change the main character of the motor, including its maximum power.

They did NOT have photos of that when I ordered my parts. I think they must have taken photos of the battery after removing my parts from the car.
