(Alena) My mom taught me and my sister's that prayer when we were growing up. Later, I realized that my mother edited out a part that many people say "If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take". I remember thinking this version was scary and sad. Why would I want to pray about possibly dying every time I went to sleep? And I'm already going to heaven, so why would I need to re-pray every night for something I already had? Looking back, I see the reason my mom taught us this version. It was faith. Faith and confidence in the Lord that he would in fact watch over us while we were sleeping and wake us in the morning. And if he didn't wake us on earth, we would arise to an even better life-- an eternal life with our Lord & Savior. Now that I'm older, I barely pray before I go to sleep at night--mainly because my mind is cluttered with checking tasks off my daily life lists, trying to remember if I forgot to do something for that day, or even jumping ahead mapping out a strategic plan to tackle all the busyness of the family activities of tomorrow. When I do catch myself putting these temporary life things above the important eternal things, I call out to the Lord. Sometimes I yell out of frustration "Lord help me". Other times I say in my head, "Please stop me. Please stop my mind from over analyzing every situation and worrying too much about the little things in life. Help me to put all my faith in you in everything I do." And then, something unexplainable happens like this: a bible verse pops into my head. Through this-- His word--He gives me the strength to refocus all my trust and faith on Him and all my worries fade away.
