  • The Amiga computer was way ahead of its time. For those of us who lived those days, we know how finicky and resource hungry quality Amiga emulation can be. In this video, we'll introduce you to the Amiga and its odd emulator needs (like Kickstarts) - we'll cover the various ways Amiga games are distributed and consumed (ADF, HDF, WHDLOAD) and we'll show you advanced configuration techniques. We will teach you about M3U and how to handle multiple disks, fix condensed screen graphics, per-game configurations and so much more.
    Almost all of the information here is useful for Raspberry Pi or PC versions of Emulation Station as well.
    Note: We will assume you have EmuDeck and SSH set up and not repeat these tutorials here.

    I'm rediscovering Amiga emulation, again. I delved into Amithlon, AND Cloanto in about 2003-2004. I still have my A3000T, CDTV, and A500/A590, scattered about. ;) Need to clear the schedule and do some battery damage inspections. Great video. I think I need a Steam deck. 🙃

    Hi there, great Video and very helpful. Just have 2 questions, as I don't have the Steam Deck yet but considering getting one in the future. When it comes to whdload games, is there a way to make it a bit easier, more automatic to configure those or do I need to check the configuration for each game separately, for games that are known to run too fast on emulation or might need a different kickstart, as I thought that whdload usually manages that itself.
    Second question is if the touchscreen or the mouse like touchpads can be used as mouse input for games such as Monkey Island and other point and click adventure games?

    • @Darkuni
      @Darkuni  Před rokem

      Most of them work with the default configurations that you see in this video. I like to warn people that it's not a walk in the park but it's really damn close to plug and Play at this point provided you have the right image files. Yeah the touch screen works and you can use the trackpad. It's beautiful. It's the best of me to emulation I've ever seen in a handheld

    @hubert3637 Před rokem +3

    it's overwhelming, now I know why Emulating the Amiga is a dead end. Watching it you can exhaust yourself mentally.
    Emulating Gameboy or other platforms is so simple, while Amiga is a labyrinth of roms, incompatible applications, a lot of clicking, and finally a screen of errors, no working analogues.
    The copyright to Kickstarter, and even if you have one - it still doesn't work - because not this name, not this version, not this color, not this grimace on your face and you will hang when you start.
    When I was young I had an Amiga 600, now I have a gaming laptop and Deck and I found that my sentiment for this platform I have to narrow down to watching gameplay of old games on youtube.
    Reading the comments here, you can get even more depressed, as someone watches it is satisfied, - however, it someone watches it AND starts doing it suddenly turns out that - save does not work, "this does not work that does not work" full despair

    • @Darkuni

      This is exactly why things like Amiga Forever exists. It is literally the only true turnkey solution. Shame I can't get it working on Steam Deck. But if you have a PC ... czcams.com/video/HE-HC2nDYjg/video.html ... I have a couple of follow up videos as well.

    @nhotaku6507 Před rokem

    Excellent video. I can do anything with ADFs on my Deck, thanks to you. The playlist help is fantastic! However, nothing I try for WHDLoad will work. Game won't even allow me to get to RetroArch config via thumbsticks, it just fails after some seconds. I have tried HDF and LHA. I wonder if my old version of Cloanto Amiga Forever (2006 premium ed.) kickstarts are to blame as the MD5 checksum is different than yours/puae guide... They seem to work fine with the many ADFs I have tried, where AROS would have failed.

    Very helpful video. Where I'm stuck is trying to play Pinball Dreams (the only game I've loaded so far, LOL). The current mapping doesn't allow me to launch the ball (I can launch the ball with the virtual KB, but would like button-related solution), or trigger the flippers. I'm just using the Steamdeck's controls, no external controller. I've played with the control mapping but nothing has helped.

    • @Darkuni
      @Darkuni  Před 4 měsíci

      I assume you're launching from ES-DE? This is one of those rare times I recommend creating a dedicated Steam launcher entry for the title. You can use Steam Rom Manager (in EmuDeck) or use my video to create your own - czcams.com/video/rD8q2zJZDKQ/video.html

      Thanks! Not sure if they removed this, but on 1.15.0 I can only find the video settings. No zoom, just a setting for aspect ratios, none of which do the trick. “Custom” lets me define a custom size, which would be great if the custom frame would be aligned to the top left corner of the screen. Unfortunately it doesn’t, which kind of undermines the idea… ;)

      @@itzame Just a warning for other people, above location is not a correct folder. It took me few hours to figure it out. To get proper ROMs from Amiga forever package, you need to install Amiga Forever from attached msi file, start it, enter serial key and finally finish the installation. Without serial key you will not see kickstart folder. And if you try to manually rename from files they will not work. So, install, start Amiga Forever, enter serial key, finish installation and then you will see a proper folder.

    Isn't it faster and easier to use FSUAE?.
    I use FSUAE and I have just one config for cd32. I load one of those Amigajay cd collections and bam, lots of games to play, no disk swap, no extra memory needed, etc.

      The Amiga CD sets are nice too, but often have issues in my experience. The loading screens, intros and such are often missing or off. I have a lot of them but I like individual games in Emulation Station. Preference thing really...

    so there's a MASSIVE issue with this guide, it rightly or wrongly assumes you have a Windows PC to install AmigaForever. If like me, you only have a Steamdeck, have paid for AmigaForever and downloaded to your deck in desktop .... even if I have Unmount ISO installed I can't run the EXE

    • @Darkuni
      @Darkuni  Před 10 měsíci

      I understand the frustration. There are only so many legal ways to do Amiga emulation. The only legal way to get the kickstarts is through Amiga Forever and Cloanto. Or dump them yourself. Currently, Amiga Forever is a Windows only package - that's what we have to work with here. I COULD go through the effort of possibly installing AF as a non-steam game so you can get the ROMs from the package that way (no, AF won't run on Linux - at least I haven't been able to do so). If there is interest in that, be happy to do it. I will reach out to Cloanto and ask if they would be willing to provide a ready made download for Amiga Forever owners for a Steam Deck solution.

    The devs of these front ends and retro cause the most convoluted ways of setup that should be simple. They're all on the spectrum I swear it, far easier to install windows and run stuff from there. I can setup WinUAE in 2min with my eyes closed, renaming kickstarts? give me a break.
