- The BMW 2-Series is the smallest BMW in the family currently sold in North America. It is a 2-door coupe or Cabriolet and sold with two different engines. The M240 is the purest car in the BMW lineup, with a small size, low power tao wight ratio, a powerful 340hp turbo 6-cylinder and sold with a 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic. The BMW M240 can be ordered with all wheel drive or rear wheel drive. The manual transmission is only sold with RWD and this model has a 10mm lower ride hight. The BMW M240 is roughly the same size as a BMW E46 from the 1990s and as car models get bigger this really is the choice for buyers who want a small, nimble, fun to drive car with a pure attitude that is missing from many German cars today. This is also the bargain in the BMW line with a starting price of $47,000 CDN and the AWD model starting at $51,000. Compred to the much more expensive M2, with only 25hp more, this is the BMW to choose if you want to have some fun without killing the bank balance.

I love that Sunset Orange Metallic colour. Great review Zack! I lusted after the M235i a few years ago, but it was slightly out of my budget. I have a Golf R now, but I hope BMW still makes these small straight-6 coupes when it comes time for me to upgrade.

I have the previous gen to this, the M235i and can testify this car is amazing. With the gear box the only thing I will say is the auto, makes you faster, improves the efficiency and drops the revs down on long motorway journeys.

I have the M240, awesome car. The M2 is a more noisy, less subtle track version. I'm happy with the M240i and yeah the M2 looks meaty but I don't think you're missing anything in regular driving. The M2 has the LSD which I do kinda wish I'd added for when speccing mine as cornering on tight narrow roads can be a bit dodgy - careful of those alloys :D Definitely tick the adaptive suspension option on the M240.
Amazing car, acceleration uphill is effortless, the M240 just keeps pulling and will more than match anything else on regular roads.
A lot of people go for the MP exhaust. I don't think you're gaining much from that kit. I have the stock exhaust and believe me it is loud enough, the pops and rumbles in Sport+ are great, especially when rolling slowly through a quiet town haha.
The cabin is really well insulated so you want to have the windows all the way down to appreciate the engine sounds.
And there is a lovely wheezing sound when you accelerate as the turbos kick in.
For the price, the fuel economy, the ride and looks there is nothing really that compares, sure a V8 Merc is nice if you have the money, but the M240i is a no brainer.
The M2 competition is the best 2 series and probably the best BMW in production today.
I drove a 2018 M2 and 2018 M240 before deciding on the M2. The M240 is a better car if you need a daily but the M2 is quicker and more fun being RWD. It was not possible to find a M240 around me which was RWD. I was specifically looking for a RWD manual vehicle to replace a 2015 camaro and the M2 IMHO was perfect. The M2 was definitely more expensive but rarer and will likely hold it's resale better than a 240. Not like it matters I will likely end up modding this one into the 500+ RWHP range and enjoy it.

I was thinking of buying a used M240i with manual then buy a Kaaz or Quaif 1.5way LSD for it. And for suspension I think Imma go for KW Coilovers 😂😂

Excellent review! Very nice to know BM still has something to offer of the sort that I have always loved them for, I have little use for the bigger, over weight units that I can't much afford anyway. BTW--how much does this car weigh!?...every time power is quoted weight should be also.

I was looking at one of these to lease but ended up buying an 2012 135i. You can pick these up for under $25k with fairly low miles (bought mine with 65k miles) and they're every bit as fun. Not to mention that if you get a 2011-2013 its either a six speed manual or 7 speed DCT.

Yep, call me old fashioned, but this car is what I think of when thinking BMW. Despite chasing sales in other segments, I respect this car in a way I don’t with other BMW products.
I hear you. I've never owned any BMW product and I tend to frown upon the douchey badge-snob attitude attached to the brand but the M240i has me very excited. It's simple, driver-centric, no-frills fun and power in an elegant classic BMW tight frame. It doesn't overflow like an obese SUV trying to look cool. It doesn't yell bourgeoisie-tries-to-look-20-years-younger like 5/7 series. It's what it is and not trying to be something else.

I think the interior is perfect. It's driver focused, the way any sports car should be. You don't need any bells or whistles distracting you. I respect BMW for keeping it real.
Hey Zack great review. I agree with everything you said. You know on the BMW USA website the 0 to 60 time for the M2 is 4.1 seconds, M240i xdrive it is 4.2 seconds. I'm assuming it's the same in Canada :). I think it's great value for a car that quick that you can also drive all year around.

awd makes a bid diff lol, sole purpose of an M2 is the driveability not the 0-60, for the money ya the m240 is a great car, but for the experience the M2 is a much better, i've driven both and i ended up getting a M2 6 speed and it's possibly the best car i've ever owned, and so great to look at!

M235i and M240i are essentially the same. 240 just a slight bump in power and digital dash. But I have the JB tune some make way more power.
I might sell mine in the next two years and get the next gen Z4 or possibly next gen 2 series should be released in that time!

Great review Zack. My problem with the M240 is that you can't have a manual with the all wheel drive. What other cars have all wheel drive and a manual option other than M340, A4, Golf R, Focus RS (RIP) and WRX/STi? Currently have a WRX and a desire for more power..

Hey Zack great concise reviews as usual. Can you comment on steering feel especially on center responsiveness? You mentioned in a previous video that early electric steering is numb which I agree. Has this changed with this 240i?

Talk about a blast from the past...I could swear that is a leftover E46 M3 "clown nose" inside rearview mirror. Looks like the actual clown nose portion is clear now instead of red but I would recognize that shape anywhere. Might be worth pulling up the part numbers on Realoem to see if my hunch is correct!
The M240i reminds me of my e-46. These smaller bimmers are really the last real BMW's that made their reputation as the ultimate driving machines, instead of the new generic efficient dynamics. I'll take the smaller bimmers all day long over the bigger bloated BMW's that are over teched and take away the pleasure of driving today.
I absolutely agree. My M240i is my 8th beemer. It is the most thrilling car I've ever driven: incredibly quick, very direct steering, corners well with amazing torque instantly on tap. Compared to the 330i I traded, the M240i is on another planet. I'm so pleased I've bought it before electric cars take over.
No, unless you’re in Sport +, Traction Control is Not Activated. So, for Eco, Comfort, & Sport modes, holding that button 5 seconds Deactivates/Turns Off Stabilization. To complicate matters, Activation means Maximize & Deactivation means Minimize (they are not fully off).
This car is basically the modern version of the E46 M3. Driver's car and for purists.
It sure sounds like it, fantastic to know there is still something offered that attracted me to BM in the first place.
I have this car and absolutely love it! I drive it in comfort mode when sitting in traffic through the week and put it in sport mode for the weekend and it feels like two completely different cars!
How is it like M3 without LSD? :)

In Canada while disabling the Rev match in the winter time you lost the stability control so this manual transmission would be great only during summer IMO
That rev matching feature would be the best feature in the world on a tractor trailer.
I had a 2003 M3 6-speed. I believe that it had 335 hp way back then. If this car drives like my old one, I'd be happy.
The only point I would make is that I think the M2 would hold it's money alot better, that being said this is a great review
I spent the first weeks trying to find a way to deactivate or override the automatic rev matching. Called dealership, "product specialist" had no idea what I was talking about (shame on them). I called BMW Canada, no help there. I read the manual, nothing about it in there. I browsed numerous forums and posted the question, and was told there is no way to deactivate it. I eventually gave up and just got used to it. Then tonight, I'm just watching this video for unrelated reason, and suddenly this guy solved my automatic rev matching thing!

@@Motormouth... So, question for you: which driving mode does it leave us in when we use that? I ask because I was in sport mode when I applied your 5-second trick, and it seemed to override the Sport mode selection. Then I tried it in Sport +, same thing. Although the steering still felt like Sport, but the throttle did not. Does it just default back to Comfort? Or is there a hidden mode that we've uncovered?
If Toyota chooses a BMW engine to put in their new Supra, I sure as hell wouldn’t mind this engine. But maybe there’s still hope we get a 3JZ with an optional manual...

Can't recommend this car enough. Of all the BMW's i've owned this is far and away the best one ever made. It is a pure drivers car, looks sharp, super fast, and gets 24 city/32 highway if driven conservatively. i drive mine like I stole it, but for those of you looking for a gas sipper with very serious performance numbers and comfort, this car can not be beat.

Two things stopping me from "recreating" my old Dinan supercharged E36 M3 with an M240. No LSD, and no Android Auto. Hate one wheel peel, and hate Apple (hmm, there's a peel thing in common there...)
What about the variable ratio steering that you have to have? I've tried racks like it in other cars and find it horrid.
Zack, have you since driven an M2? I assume so and was wondering which you would choose. If they offered a 240i with a limited slip, I would choose the 240i. I drove one (2wd) and it seems to have too much power for. 2wd.

One point you slightly missed when comparing M2 is that due to the extra weight of the M2 in comparison to the M240i, the power to weight ratio is only 2bhp difference.
So basically in a straight line the M2 isn't any faster.

Do it mate , Audi , which is a flash VW and those stupid DSG gearboxes just sold my Golf R which is a S3 with a different body on it as the DSG shit itself due to heavy traffic drive . The gearbox in these things are 8 speed and have a torque converter so you can roll up behind people rolling with your foot off the brake, you dont get the shunting feeling and discomfort. You will not even feel the gear changes in the BMW and it get 5l/100 on highway cycle, best my Golf got was 7l/100 at best . It way nicer can i think

I have been considering a 2 Series, but have heard some purists actually prefer the four-cylinder 228/230 variants because they have better balance in the turns because the nose is lighter. (I recall a video or article somewhere out there online that compares the 228/235/M2, and they liked the 228 the best). And for ~$3K CAD, a BMW-approved Dinan tune, upgraded intercooler, intake and exhaust can make the 228/230 produce ~300hp (up from 240hp stock). (My wife's 328i with the same 240hp engine is pretty darn quick -- just 0.5 seconds slower to 100kph than the 335i.) I'd love to see a video or know your thoughts on the M235/240's little brother/sister. Thanks!

Sure does. Here’s the thing, I have a 2018 m240i xdrive (auto) and I’ve driven the m2. Because of how much more track focused the m2 is, it feels a lot faster. In reality it’s not, the m2 is only 1/10 of a second quicker than a fully optioned m240i (xdrive and auto). I chose the 240 because it was literally 14k less than the m2 at my dealer. Not worth it, even if it were the same price it’s not worth it because the m2 must be rough to daily... anyways It’s not the quickest car ever but it’s a lot of fun. My next car will no doubt be a tesla, but I’m sure I’ll look back when I’m older (I’m only 19) and remember all of the fun I had in this car.
@@Hunterdietzman I don't think I could ever go away from the sweet inline 6 engine sound from the B58! I guess you're fine with it, but engine sounds just adds to the whole experience of a powerful car!
@@germanengineering204 I completely agree, I’ve driven a couple of Teslas actually and I can say without a doubt there is something missing... but that acceleration and instant power that literally throws your head back against the headrest makes up for it. Have you driven a Tesla yet? Not trying to come across as rude of course, but you should really drive one, you’ll see what I mean.
I can’t speak for everyone (or you) maybe you’ll find that the sound is irreplaceable by any degree of exhilaration you get from the Tesla’s instant power. Nonetheless, I love my BMW, and I’m thinking of keeping it as a second car, at least until the CPO warranty is up.

Hey Zack, great review. I am not sure if you have driven an M2, but although it has only 25 more hp - to me, it’s night and day , the M2 is a whole different animal. The M2 just feels like it’s on an entirely different level especially when equipped with the MPE. The M240 feels like a sporty car...the M2, like a sports car and it’s so much better looking with the flared fenders and aggressive bumpers. I would be keen to get your feedback and/or review of the M2. Love your reviews!
M2 with S55 engine is the real M2
They definitely drive and feel very different. Plus, the M2 comes with alot of things that are extra on the M240... the exterior also looks much more aggressive. Resale value should also be better on the M2, as there were much fewer sold.
340 metric horse power correspond to 335 mechanical horsepower; the first are used in Europe, the second in the USA
BMW fudge their numbers... For the better. I bought my wife the 228i.. 0-60 in 5.9
On the Dyno test before any mods, it registered 279 bhp, and we clocked an average of 5.3 on each run....

I have a 2019 M240i auto RWD and am getting the M performance exhaust fitted. I can't seem to get a straight answer from BMW about whether this alone will increase the power i.e. without any changes to ECU etc. Any ideas? Thanks.
M Performance exhaust is just better sound. No performance increase.

Top tips, if you were to buy this car, finance it instead of leasing it.
They give you a much lower residual value at the end of the lease than the actual end of lease market value.
So you ends up paying much more than the depreciation, and you are almost "forced" to buy the lease damage coverage.
This car could be the last BMW in Canada to have a Manual Transmission.
It would be a hot item in a few years time in the preowned market.

I wish the auto-rev match feature is off by default. And the fact you have to turn off TC to deactivate it is a bummer. What kind of customer would prefer a manual transmission but wouldn't want to rev match and heel-and-toe themselves? It makes little sense to me.

I don't know where you get your information from, but the M240i with xDrive is 4.4 seconds to 100km/h (4.6 with rwd) and the M2 Competition (which is faster than the M2) is 4.2 seconds to 100km/h (4.4 with the manual). Not 4.8 seconds and not 4 seconds.

The M2 would probably be the better purchase if you are going to keep the car longer than a lease term. It will have a way higher resale value than the m240...prices on m235s are already pretty low and its basically the same car, same generation. Not to mention it looks quite a bit nicer. My cousins 330ci zhp was 53k new... my zcp m3 of the same year was 59k. He has put 55k miles on it and would be lucky to get 12k for it now on the used market. Had he sprung for the m3, he would be sitting on a 30 or 40 thousand dollar used car. Real M or nothing.
Nah. Drove both the M2 and M240. Could have afforded either, but "settled" for the 240. Better street engine and adaptable suspension. Save enough to buy another BMW (an R1200GS motorcycle).
Zack, here is a question for you: I know these are 2 different cars but you happen to like both very much. For the same price a base M240i (no option) you can get a Mustang GT with the performance package, Magneride suspension and the interior upgrade (including sat radio and android auto, Sync 3 with large screen). Which one do you find is the most fun to drive between these two?

I think this engine in the upcoming Toyota Supra is going to be the best combo. They have released a few specs and the car is only going to way 3200 lbs. It also shouldn't cost anymore than the m240.

Hatchback exists, but they don't bring it to the north american market - M135i /M140i = M235i / M240i. With Mercedes bringing the A250 to Canada, maybe we'll see BMW options at some point in the future as well.

So many poindexters out there trying to justify this over the m2. The point is it's not a proper M car and hence won't hold its value. That M badge is worth its weight in gold. M cars are timeless, iconic pieces of BMW history and this car just isn't that. In Australia you can't buy any used M car with less than 100K miles for less than $35K and I'm talking even old E46's. My point for saying this is that I can buy a used 2016 M2 with 30K miles on the clock for $56K or I can buy a used 2019 m240i with 20K miles on the clock for $49K. In 15yrs time the M car will still be worth $30K (at least). The m240i wouldn't even be worth half that so you tell me what's the better buy? It's a no brainer.
BMW always undercuts the real/actual horsepower. If you measured at the wheel, this car probably has 375+ easy.

anyone knows REAL fuel consumption of this car?
In eco pro on long trips with cruise control, I get 34 mpg. In hard driving, I get 25 mpg avg.
On cruise control in eco pro, with higher octane petrol I get 44 mpg. With my foot down in Sport Plus it registered 5 mpg!
