The BMW X1 was first introduced back in 2008, and it was based on the E91 3 series touring, and it didn’t come to North America till 2018. Sales went from 8000 units to 31000 units, it became quite popular. Now Mercedes wants a piece of that, this is why they have introduced the 2020 Mercedes GLB, a competitor to the BMW X1.
Today I am going to show why the GLB will take over the market and why you should pick the GLB over the X1.
The BMW X1 wins over the GLB in only one aspect, the price, the standard X1 starts at 35,000 meanwhile the GLB starts at 36,000 dollars, and there’s a good reason why it is more expensive. The GLB offers 3 row seats, and it offers far more cargo volume than the X1 with the second row seat down, as good as the BMW X3. The 3rd row seat in the GLB is not meant for adults since it is impossible to sit inside.
Under the hood they both offer similar engines, the X1 with a 2 lt 4 cylinder inline twinpower turbocharged making 228 bhp meanwhile the GLB offers a similar engine that makes 221 bhp.

Mercedes always has better interior, however for the price you pay for the BMW X1, the driving dynamics can’t be beat. If you want a sporty feeling suv, go with X1, if you want a better interior go with GLB.
I think the bmw will be getting a full interior update. I’m excited to see how it looks compared with the rest of the lineup.

Pricing. How much if comparably equipped? I heard someone said even moon roof is extra on GLB. GLB appears to better, but how much more?

I agree. I had a 2018 X1 and a 21 GLA35(same interior as the GLB and granted it is an AMG "lite" model). The X1 is a good car but the design, especially the interior just screams "budget model". Very basic/minimal design to the steering wheel, gauges and center stack. The GLA35 is still a "budget model" but it doesn't look that way. You cant really tell that the MB is a budget model until you start knocking on stuff. For me it was when I unbuckled my seat belt and let the buckle go and heard it knock into what sounded like an empty, plastic-y B-pillar.

I actually thought the GLB was funky looking too, think the X1 looks better and the interior of X1 has way better materials, that GLB felt cheap, it doesn’t look cheap but poking around it is. Many forget the details

Is cabin very quieter than GLB? IS GLB ride is bumpy(smoother) than X1? Right now I own Mini countryman and looking for something smoother and quieter.
Glb is boxy so its not going be quite or smoother x1 will be better in those regards it's all about physics
While I do agree that the GLB is better than the X1, I think you are over exaggerating how much better it is just a bit.
1) iDrive is easier to use than even the newest version of Mercedes' infotainment (MBUX). That little knob in the X1 make it so much easier to use than a frustrating touchpad
2) a 3rd row seat in this category is mostly pointless. Way too small, and adds cost unnecessarily. It will just eat more cargo space which is already small. If you need more room, then prob best to go to the next category up.
3) I'm 6'4'' and got in and out of the front seat of the X1 easily--especially with the standard seats (not the sport ones). The back seats however, were definitely smaller than the GLB.
4.) The X1 gets slightly better gas mileage in the 2WD version
Otherwise I agree w everything else. I wish they updated that interior in the X1 just a little bit. a 10.2inch display with a full digital instrument cluster would have done wonders. And also black interior with black trim doesn't do it justice. But i guess since it's selling so well they just can't be bothered?

I was in the same exact situation as you and test drove both. Then came home with GLB :)
I would pick the better driver's car any day - the BMW.
I like the BMW more, partially because of the grill but also I think it’s more stylish in general. And I like how much smaller the X1 feels inside. I’ve sat in both a GLB and an X1 and the X1 felt smaller which I like way more.
You should compare X1 with GLA and all of a sudden BMW is the better one.
Then do the GLB against an X3 and you will end up with a similar result.
Compare apples with apples please.
Compare apples to apples..if that's what you want then the GLC should be compared with the X3 and then see which is better!!!

Ian Minjae Kim in Canada the XC40 starts at about 39,000 the GLb 43000, GLB gets you a third row, newer infotainment system compared to the Volvo which is a couple of years old, the overall space option in the GLB, the driving and I don’t like hybrids.
Sam CarLegion Thanks :) Here in UK they don’t support ventilation seat & no option for five seat ( I don’t have kids so would rather have more boot space) which makes me hard to decide 😭
Glb is my favorite. X1 interior is very old style.
Merc gearbox is nowhere near as good as BMW’s.
Same for the voice control. Merc is terrible.
I own both an X1 (2017) and a GLA (2018) and jump in the X1 every time.
It’s more comfortable, I find entry/exit really good & it fits my iPhone 7Plus 😂
And I have to ask, why be shocked when someone has a different opinion? 🤷🏻♂️
So, you are comparing an up to date BMW with an old Mercedes. The new GLA has just been released and is much better than the old one in every department.
Ewoodster, it definitely needed it because the 2018 ‘box in the GLA clanks and stutters. I’m aware of a new ‘box for the new GLA but believe it’s in the diesel only.
My X1 is also older (2017. Typo in original post. It’s not a 2027!!) than the GLA.

@@mammutpenthouse could be now if it’s just been changed. Our car (GLA) is a 2018 and the ‘box in that not good. It never seems to be in the right gear and particularly does not like hills.

The X1 is louder inside. Very annoying wind sound, even when you drive very slow. It becomes unbearable when it rains or even just wet outside.
My brother owns the GLB and this car is way better than the X1 in all aspects.
Welp, I ended up getting the GLB. I do like it, but I kind of regret my decision. Here's why:
1.) The ride is way too bumpy for a Mercedes. It's more on the sporty end than the luxury end. I opted OUT of the sport package so it would be smooth, but it's still quite bumpy. I wish I got the adaptive suspension (for another $1k extra)
2.) The trackpad is SO ANNOYING. It's been 4 months now and it still bothers me. It constantly changes channels + skips tracks by itself, and it's way less intuitive than iDrive. I miss the turning knob on the BMW but i just try to use everything through touchscreen. Voice commands don't work super well either.
3.) The interior looks great, but after a while you really notice how cheaply built it is. Hard plastics, general creaking, and it just feels fragile. Not what I would expect in a Benz.
4.) The transmission revs too high and acts weird at low levels. It's gotten slightly better though so maybe it's learning how I drive.
5.) The transmission level is annoying, but i'm getting more used to it. Definitely miss a gear knob in the center console area.
6.) I regret not getting the adaptive cruise control / safety package. That would have been $2.5k extra but the MSRP was already 50k without it. That high of a price without the feature on that package is quite annoying. The standard cruise control is really finicky to use.
This was my first mercedes and probably will be my last. I love the large interior, the beautiful interior styling, the gas mileage, the cargo space, and other things. But I think the better driving and better built BMW would have been a better choice. Good thing it's a lease! :)
You should have gone with the GLC. Much better and more sophisticated ride for almost the same price as a GLB.
GLC is built on the E Class platform with interior bits from C Class.
GLB is built on the compact A Class
@@blackcatsarenopussies GLC's interior is worse, is smaller inside, had a more dated infotainment system at the time, was more expensive, and doesn't look as good as the GLB in my opinion. Wish i just got the adaptive suspension.
@@blackcatsarenopussies The GLC's platform isn't just from the E class but a lot of other mercs uses that platform as well, like the C class, CLS.
My husband and I are currently using his father's 2016 X1. I'm 6'3" and I keep bumping my rear when entering the passenger's seat! It's so frustrating! I hate the rubber on the side pillar! Compared to the GLB which we checked out yesterday at our local dealership, it's prettier on the outside and more modern I think, but the inside of the GLB won me over. It feels more luxurious and it doesn't have so much hard plastic. Especially on the doors and...actually everywhere. The X1 is full of it. It has almost the same space overall, GLB slightly more spacious. Very good headroom, you could fit a sunroof in both cars. But there's one thing that annoys us with the X1 ,as bigger than average and tall people that we are and we were happy we didn't see in the GLB : small-@ss seats! What's the deal with the X1; It's only for people with small rears and preferably not tall, because they are not deep enough! Have you noticed? I wasn't expecting them to be like the X5 we had but those are really small! Anyway, since we are going for a smaller car now, the GLB makes more sense. We will take it for a spin next week so I hope it meets our needs on the road,too! Up until last year I would agree that the X1 doesn't hit on the potholes and abnormalities of the road that hard. It felt smooth. I can't say that anymore. Let's hope the GLB drives nice and that it won't disappoint us in any way! 🤞🏽

I got an X1 as a loaner, and it’s fun but I wouldn’t pay $40k for it.
I like bmws, but in this category the GLB has a bit of a lead because of tiny third row, but once it hits $57k for a fully loaded, then its a bit too much, I would prefer the x3 m40i, or a decent X5, or even the GLE.
What do you think of design? Which one is better?
The GLB is good looking inside and out, practical, and even though the third row is only for emergencies like fire extinguishers, it seems to add a lead compare to the competition, until it hits the pricey tag.
X1 is good as a loaner, and that’s pretty much it. It’s small and outdated for sure.

Ewoodster, my preferences are at $100k+ tbh, but you can get a base X5, and a GLE for $59k, and also at that range the X3 m40i is available.
I prefer X1. Bmw has more quality materials inside.

I can't understand why BMW is such an Apple Fanboy! The center console will accommodate an iPhone of course but not larger Android phones! Add to that a second slam in the face is no Android Auto (until (2023). The GLB looks too much like a family station wagon. The features offered by Mercedes are indeed better than BMW but those features come at a higher price. As of late 2023, the GLB isn't available in Thailand.
You missed a big NOT between the “Should” and “Pick”. With the fakest of fake exhaust pipes it makes this expensive benso look el cheapo.
Why people like tablets in a car's interior and call it's modern and luxurious is beyond me. My home is full of flat screens, I don't need no more in my cars. If you want a driver's car, BMW for sure. This GLB, like CarWow's Matt said, is a London taxi with fake exhausts.
