Shore Fishing for Salmon | Catching Coho / Silver Salmon on Spinners in Oregon

- Spent Labor Day Weekend at the Oregon Coast where we did some fishing and crabbing. Everything we did was from shore. In 2 days of casting spinners for coho, we hooked 6, landed 2 and kept 1. We had to use barbless single hooks, which makes landing coho very difficult since they are usually quite acrobatic. Hope you enjoy this video. Take care everyone.

Love you're videos man, for information and entertainment purposes, keep on doing what you doing
Thank you. Really appreciate that.
Great video and footage thanks for sharing and taking us along to enjoy
Thank you
Barbless hooks make it so much of a challenge . Some heart breakers lost . Great vid.
River Right Outdoors - barbless hooks are tough with coho because they are so acrobatic, it’s not as bad with chinook. But I would still prefer using a barbed siwash hook.
Awesome to catch them off the shore...I loved Coho fishing on Lake Michigan growing up
Nothing between you and a chrome bright coho but a rod and reel is pretty fun.
So cool you can catch fish like that from shore!!!
Blessed for sure
That's cool brotha! Always a good day to be fishing!
You know it. Cant get enough of that stuff
Nice job getting it done from shore!
Thank you
I love that kind of fishing. Beach fishing is so enjoyable. Too bad you didn’t land more. That was a lot of fun.
Thanks for watching Adrian. Nothing beats that salmon take when you’re reeling in a lure. But yeah, the single barbless hooks are brutal for that river.
Never been out there would love to give it a try one of my favorite bites is a spinner bite ! Great video
The spinner bite is awesome. Love that feeling
Nice video brother! Beautiful fish!!
Thanks man. Felt good to get that tug
Great video! looked like fun being out there.
Thank you! Always love being out there
Man seeing that hook come flying out had me feeling your pain sir. Glad you got one in the 🎣🙌🙌👏👏
Thanks. Yeah it’s painful to finally hook up, just to lose it. Glad I was able to at least take one home though.
I've been fishing that bank for 30 years. You should definitely be using treble hooks on your spinners. My preferred hooks are Owner Stinger Trebles size #1. Pinched barbless of course. Be well, fish on!
Thanks! I’ve been trying to find a good treble hook replacement to try.
The time is upon us! Good video, gets me pumped
It’s go time
Nice job! Looks like a lot of fun.
Thanks David! It was a good time for sure.
Wooo fall salmon is here! Nice job!
Thanks Mike. They are here
Great video friend
Thank you
Awesome catch!👍 hopefully we’ll catch our first salmon before the end of the year 😁
This year has been tough. I’m taking time off work just to get out a few more times on the coast before the end of October. There are coho in the Sandy and Clackamas, but I can’t catch them.
Northwest Open Season we are planing to try Sandy this week. We’ll let you know how we do : )
Man you have much better patience and persistence then I do! After losing a couple I’d be way to pissed. Some nice catch there but man too many rules out there that can be confusing. I’ve been doing a lot more barbless hooks as of lately definitely can cost more fish then non barbless.
Our refs are ridiculous. You have to check online for updates before you go because they change so much.
Northwest Open Season yea that’s some bullshit lo
Good shit!
Steven Hong - Thanks!
Nice vid!
Thanks man. Yeah, single barbless on the Columbia this year
I use the big river bait hooks from gami and they seem to hold much better and not pop to many fish off. You should give em a try.
I actually have some of those, I’ll have to give that a try. Thanks for the tip.
i see fish get caught on that beach quite a bit. pretty cool your gettin coho on the bank makes it nice!
Thanks bro. It’s one of my favorite things to do. I actually don’t really like trolling, I get too bored 🤷♂️
Northwest Open Season there are times when not catching I get bored. Just gotta be on em. But then again that’s why there’s beer and your buddies
Fishing The Odds - True and true. Plus a boat makes filming a lot less awkward.
Good job
Thanks
Just saw this video. One of these days I will make it up there to fish from the beach. Those Yakima Bait 3.0 Spinfish stuffed with tuna worked great last year for coho casting in the bays. Haven't tried this year yet, but hope to.
I’ve wondered if casting spinfish or brads cutplugs from shore would produce. Do you add a weight or are they heavy enough to cast as is?
@@NorthwestOpenSeason I add 1.5 oz banana weight about 24" above the lure. I do change my hooks to 5/0 double hook setup. I got them trolling the bays too behind a 360 flasher. In two years, I have landed 2 Chinook and about 8 coho. Of course I couldn't keep but 1 coho, because they are wild. Hopefully they will let us keep wild coho in the bay this year. I fish mainly Siletz Bay, Nestucca Bay, and Columbia between Portland and St. Helen's for fall. Occasionally Tillamook Bay, but haven't for several years.
@@stevepreston7030 Great info, thanks Steve
Awesome! Looks like a nice weekend altogether. How'd you cook up the crabs and salmon?
Thanks. Baked salmon with mayo. Crabbing video coming soon for that weekend. Just been busy since we got back with wildfires and helping family out. Stay safe.
@@NorthwestOpenSeason nice! Look forward to seeing that vid. Hope everyone is safe around you guys. Very scary stuff right now :(
Dang those hooks are selling
I was talking to a guy when I was fishing for summer steelhead and he was telling me about this kind of fishing at that spot he said he got two jacks.
It’s a lot of fun. Lots of people though.
Awesome video man! How do you go about finding these spots to fish from shore?
Brian Balba - I spend a lot of time looking at google earth. There’s not too many secret spots left out there though, usually when you find something you wanna try there’s already people there.
Thanks y'all! I'm from Texas and use google maps to find certain structures to fish. I just moved to Oregon 2 weeks ago and I'm not really sure what to look for on google earth, in terms of structures or points.
Put ruler markings on your fishing rod with paint pen.
Clear nail polish over top to keep for years to come
Good idea
I wonder if the squid skirt might have had a negative impact upon hook penetration.
Kevin Bushnell - Possibly... But I use siwash hooks with these spinners a lot and don’t have the same problem with barbs. Some times I will add a barrel swivel, but that really drops the hook back pretty far.
@@NorthwestOpenSeason I was thinking that maybe moving the hook back a little might help, or, using a spinner that doesn't have the hoochie, such as a Blue Fox. Those Squid Stingers are hard to beat though. What I've found to be the most effective for keeping barbless hooks in is a bungee; although, I have no idea how one might incorporate a bungee into shore casting spinners. Using bungees, when fishing barbless hooks, has more than doubled my catch rate. Maybe someone will see this and invent a spinner with a built in shock absorber. 🤔
Great video! Thanks for the inspiration!
Kevin Bushnell - interesting concept. I love these spinners and I have more success with them than others, so I will stick with them. I’m intrigued by the idea of a snubber system for the hook, might have to look into that a little.
@@NorthwestOpenSeason If you come up with something, please let me know.
You mentioned your problem with barbless single hooks and fish loss. Why didn't you try barbless trebles instead?
carl astoria - I haven’t tried barbless trebles yet. I’ve heard that coho can throw those easier, but I can’t prove that. Maybe some day I will give it a go. Do you have experience/recommendations for barbless trebles?
@@NorthwestOpenSeason I use mustad 3551 BR 3/0 which comes stock at the 9/16 max gap requirement. Then I pinch the barb and w pliers bend the hooks slightly inward. I also use the owner stinger 3/0 trebles and do the same. The stingers are slightly more hardened than the mustad and thus not as pliable. More care is needed when bending inward. I carry a hook sharpener and keep the hooks touched up. I replace the hooks when I touch them up too much over time. My hook up ratio to landing fish is about 50% to 66%. In other words half to 2/3 of hookups are landed. This all strictly spinner fishing. I play the fish with looser drag like others here recommend. I am intrigued with trying circle owner hooks next season at ft Stevens. I think that might be a better ticket.
carl astoria - Wow! Thanks for the info. I definitely will look into this.
You fish incoming tide right?
Most of the time incoming seems to be best.
What pound test are you using
Kostabum Fishin - 30lb braid, barrel swivel and 30lb mono to spinner.
Northwest Open Season thank you I’m using 30 braided line than 30 pound line for a leader what a spoon or spinner
Kostabum Fishin - I use squid stinger lures. You can also use flying C’s or Vibrax spinners. Stick with either chartreuse or pink for colors.
Northwest Open Season ok last year in Michigan I was using neon spoons and it worked
Yea those single burbless hooks suck that s right but its nice to catch some it worth it a lot of people been snagging where I ve been going fishing lately what a disgrace!!!
Snaggers ruin it for everyone. Too bad
I'm a little confused here bro... if you were fishing the 4th & 5th, it was non-selective and unclipped fish could be retained. ????
One of the tricks to landing Coho with barbless hooks is to loosen the drag after the hook up and let them run and get tired while just keeping light tension on them, just try to keep up with the slack and feel the fish. They are very acrobatic and if you try to reel them in, you'll lose the majority of them. Try it my way and you'll be landing more fish than you lose. Thanks for the vid, I didn't make it out and missed out on some hot fishing... KS
PS: Switch to Octopus hooks and sharpen them up... Not sharp enough out of the package... No hooks are....
There was a 2 day opening for chinook on the Columbia in that area and you could keep anything, coho is hatchery only. I usually keep my drag pretty loose, as you can hear on my hook sets, but maybe need to go lighter yet. I have tried octopus, sickle siwash, straight siwash, all sorts of hooks. I actually like using a single hook with spinners, but not barbless. The only thing I didn’t do this time that I normally do is add a barrel swivel to allow it to spin more freely. Thanks for the tips though, definitely appreciate your insight.
@@NorthwestOpenSeason Right! Drag is too heavy! You're fighting the fish. Let it have it's head. The way to wear a Salmon out is to let it run. That keeps them head down and pulling away. Instead of head up (to you) and flopping and fighting. I watch you in the river and you are too aggressive with them. You want to bring them in when they are still green. Let the fish do the work. Just stay engaged... Cheers! Luv you bro...
King Slew - Makes sense. Thank you. I just get so excited when I hook one 😂
@@kingslew1866 Great advice. I struggled with that too. Just because a fish is taking line doesn't mean it's getting away. I had to learn to be patient. I learned on steelhead though. The only exception is if you're bank fishing and you can't afford to let a fish get into fast water or someplace you can't follow. Then you have to use as large a hook as you can get away with and pray.
@@stevet8121 Yeah... I was going to mention hook size, bigger is better, but it looked like a 6/0 or 7/0 Siwash on the spinner, so I just mentioned offset...
Ive seen people fish there in videos before I always wanted to go there but idk what that place is called can I direct message you for the name of that place? I live way out in Eastern Oregon and would love to fish that place.
No need to DM, it’s called social security beach. It is no secret, and it is already popular. Just be careful and respectful. If people are plunking, don’t cast spinners in front of them.
@@NorthwestOpenSeason do people bobber fish it?
Adventure Angling PNW - I did see one bobber, but I’m not sure what he was doing. It was stationary and he was not casting and drifting. Maybe it was some kind of hybrid plunking set up.
Can you fish the OR coast right now for salmon with a fishing license and a tag? its 10/11/20 and id love to give it a shot!!!!
Coty Parker - All of the Oregon coast rivers and bays should be open for fall salmon until Dec 31. You need a fishing license and combined angling tag. Each bay has different regulations though for what you can keep, so make sure you look at ODFWs website first. The Columbia has a different set of regs that changes all the time, and you have to look each day before you go. Good luck and be safe out there.
This is litterally the most complete, and accurate response I have ever gotten on the internet. Liked, subscribed. Thank you.
I just a tip suggestion those kind of hooks your using you tend to want to kind of bend them off to the side a bit. Also if I were you I'd rather use a barbless circle hook a little bit harder to lose a fish.
rogelio salazar - I put a bend in the hook originally when I lost the first fish, and then I straightened it back out. I think adding a barrel swivel can help too. I’ve never tried a circle hook on a spinner, but I will consider that in the future, thanks for the tip!
Last tip suggestion keep your rodlo I put my tip and water special for barbless hooks Schleich River fishing. I love this videos got me pumped I'm trying to head out there this coming week
rogelio salazar -Thanks. Good luck and be safe.
Don't get stuck any forest fires
Trying not to. Keep finding myself getting called back in to help remove stuff from houses though. It’s pretty crazy
The fact that you have to use single barbless hooks so gill netters can have more fish is a crime.
Amen brother
stop blaming the hook its your technique(handing the rod side ways Like you are bass fishing, keep that rod tip up and your fish should almost never come off .
We’ll try to remember that, but we were there again today and went 0 for 4, everyone using different techniques. We are using high quality or Gamakatsu and Mustads. When I fish other locations even with single hooks and barbs, I NEVER lose fish. So yeah, the barbless hook is the only different variable.
