  • In This Video We Are Covering The Basics Of Salmon Fishing With Spinners, Specifically Choosing Your Rod, Reel, Line, As Well As Salmon Spinners. If you are new to salmon fishing or looking to start fishing for Coho or Chinook Salmon, this is the video for you.
We will start off by covering what it is you are looking for in a salmon fishing rod (fishing rod specs) so you can choose the correct rod length and power that will have you casting spinners and lures most effectively. With our rod selected, we will then cover the types of fishing reels and what it is that we are looking for in a good salmon spinning reel or salmon bait casting reel, again covering the specs on a reel and what they mean when it comes to fishing monofilament, fluorocarbon, and braided line.
Knowing what to look for in a rod and reel, we can now cover the types of line and what is the best line for targeting coho and chinook salmon. Each line has their pros and cons and the conditions as well as the body of water will dictate which may be the bast line to use. I'm a fan of using braided line and you will see that I use braided line on all of my salmon fishing setups.
Lastly we will cover salmon spinners and salmon lures, specifically the sizes, weights and different styles that are always effective when it comes to producing a fish.
Bank fishing for salmon with spinners is a VERY effective technique and can produce fish when all other techniques are failing. Some of the biggest salmon I have caught have all been on spinners!
If you haven't seen the first video in this series which covers how to select a rod for salmon fishing, then give it a look. This video gets more in depth about the actions, lengths and uses of different rods for different techniques for Salmon fishing. • Salmon Fishing Rods {W...

Quality video and love the way you step through the options, even if you have a different preference. I’m also a huge fan of your budget friendly gear recommendations. I know I prefer a variety of rods and reels and it’s easier to accomplish that when the setup is under $200.

Do you have any problems with line twist when you use spinners without a swivel?

M SN - Thank You, and I agree, I’d prefer to have a variety of “mediocre” rods over 1 or 2 expensive rods. I’m rough on my gear and prefer being able to toss my rod on the ground if I need to without giving it a second thought. I don’t think I’ve ever spent more than $100 on a rod or reel.. there are plenty of budget friendly options out there that will get the job done.
I get asked a lot about whether or not I use weights and what kind of braid, etc, so it was nice to just cover what I’ve been getting asked about, especially with coho and chinook fishing picking up. Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it.

Rod type for me would totally depend on the season im fishing. When spring salmon are running im usually fishing the river for summer steelhead and the river i fish is medium width with lots of space and long runs and a steelhead rod (8-12lb-ish) works perfectly fine and I've never had an issue...however when im targeting fall salmon on the coast I wouldn't even think of taking a 8-12lb rod. Coastal river, narrow in spots, super rocky/snaggy, short runs, lots of debris fish will run for to hide when hooked...the salmon I've caught gave me fits with a 10-20 rod and you would be best outfitted with a rod you can put the brakes on a 20-30lb or bigger fish. 12-25lb rod is what i use...80lb braid main line and 40lb mono leader. 50-65lb braid works ok but the sharp coastal river rock ledges cut braid so fast!

Hey Lance! I just finished getting your order together. Since there is no mail pick up today it will be in the mail tomorrow (tues) and you should have it the following day. I've always been a big fan of the blue fox spinners, I just didn't like how hard it was to get them deeper in the water, that's why i started making the bullet spinners. Though i do still fish with blue fox every now and then... I wish i had some of this type of info when i started fishing as well lol, i could have saved myself a few years of struggling to figure things out, but honestly i think trial and error was the way to go over someone telling me how to do something. Time on the water, in my opinion is the most important thing of all.

Nick, at Barview a few days ago a guy just down from me landed a magnificent 30" wild coho on a blue spinner. It was both sad and hilarious; no one around could decide whether it was legal or not, only because ODFW's website is so absurdly useless. And I have two advanced degrees! I assume inside of the tips of the jetties is not ocean, but river. And we all were of the belief that wild ocean coho was closed. But beyond that ... ???? Do you have any idea what the current regulations are for both coho and chinook landed in the channel? And perhaps more important, where do YOU get your current salmon regulations?

Hey, I feel you about the regulations not been clear. I tried to pull then up myself yesterday after catching and releasing two wild cohos. The third one finally was a hatchery and I kept it. There is literally 0 guidance about coho in rivers or at least the Sandy.

@@NK-np1he, ODFW's website is abusive. It is so insane that activities that can carry massive fines if you make one tiny mistake are provided with such pathetic guidance. It's as if they _want_ us to be criminals. It truly makes my blood boil.
Oh, and one more point, how do you like the 7 pixel photos used to ID fish? Google any fish and there are trillions of stunning, crystal clear photos. But ODFW's photos -- like those for identifying salmon -- are as bizarre as they are absurd.

@@NK-np1he, no, I know my fish. I've been a salmon fisherman for 40 years. My point was simply that ODFW has totally crappy photos that are almost useless to someone who is not clear. Why? What's the point? Why not have high quality photos? Pixels are free.

How much drag do I need for coho?

    • @AnglingAddictsPNW
      @AnglingAddictsPNW  Před 3 lety

Really depends on what kind of line you are running and what lb test.. i'm usually fishing 30lb braid with 15-20lb fluorocarbon, and i know that will hold up with my drag set tight enough that i can just barely pull line from the reel by hand. Coho are super active when you hook them and it's better to be too loose than too tight, since you are more likely to brake off with a really tight drag.... you will know after you hook into one whether you are too loose or too tight...... then you can dial your reel in :) Good luck out there

I have a Trophy koho 9ft spinning rod...rated 8 to 15 lbs as i get springs too.,its probably medium action and almost the whole rod bends which i like, saves the shoulde.....oh in my experience a good braid ratio is 8lb mono is the same as 30 lb braid and 12 lb braid will be 50 lb braid

Awesome videos and you are obviously living the dream. I would like advice. Trying to get into Salmon fishing. I met a fellow fisherman willing to help teach me, but as far as the equipment they can only say they have a 9'+ Heavy / Fast Action Pole. I think I found what I want to use and I am trying to marry it up with a reel. This is what I am looking at and could use some sage advice. To me they seem to have similar features.
    - Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifier 2 Spinning Reel - PQF4000 on sale now $48.99
    - Pflueger President Spinning Fishing Reel - PRESSP40X - AMZN $69.99
I'm still flipping back and forth between a
Okuma SST 9'9" Heavy / Fast Action Cabelas $99 or
Okuma Guide Select Pro 9'9" Medium / ??? Action On Sale $109

That Pflueger PressP40X is well worth the money. I still have a couple of them. They were my go-to reels for quite some time. As for rods, I don’t think a heavy rod is the way to go. A medium is much better. It will work better for different setups. Though it’s a bit more, the guide select pro would be a better investment in my opinion.

@@AnglingAddictsPNW Thank you. I will go with the Pflueger and the GSP Med/Med. I hope to have some success with Salmon. Sad that I have lived 6 Miles from this river and never fished it. Mostly because during the season I see shoulder to shoulder Anglers (Flossing). FYI I do some Surf Fishing (Copalis Beach, WA) and your videos are helping me refine my rigs.
