I've heard that dogs can smell emotions from several places but never got an explanation of how. How are emotions measured quantitatively so we know dogs can smell them? Do we produce chemicals/pheromones for emotions that release into the air that we could measure with a device? Can other humans detect them?
How are you Vox journalists so great? Vox knows how to hire them and then when they leave, they become even better as they are able to focus on whatever they want. Howtown, Big If True (Cleo), Johnny Harris, Search Party, etc. all excellent. All great story telling and informative.

I remember learning about this in university, but that explanation didn’t even come close to this summary. I wish I had this back in my university days. Probably would have got that question right on the exam. Future generations will have THIS to view to help them understand a very interesting topic. I really look forward to future videos of whatever topics you decide to explore and explain how we actually know something. Great channel idea.

The way I'm wrapping my head around it, is I imagine that dogs see different smells as different tinges of color, and "sniffing" ups that saturation to make it easier to distinguish. And they can visually remember these smells the way we visually remember what an apple looks like
I can confirm that my thought-to-be-blind 18 year old Cairn terrier (RIP July 30, 2022) could always find her way thru our home despite obstacles particularly navigating her way to the treat cabinet.

Great first episode! One thing that I don’t know how scientists knew were the depth perception and colour blindness of babies. It should be as simple as because the brain is still developing but it’s still amazing how scientists knew nonetheless.
I am so, so excited for this channel. I've been a huge fan of Joss's work for years, and though I'm just meeting Adam I can tell he's got that same incredible curiosity and communication ability. Fantastic first video, can't wait to see what's next.
Very impressed by how far into things you went in such a short time. Given the time constraints I didn't think you would get past just the Dichromatic vision. It did brush over some of the consequences of each element, but that is a tradeoff which allowed more diverse information in the time constraint. You include a lot of personal connections, like using people's actual dogs in the discussion and talking about what they think of things. Not my cup of tea, but for most viewers that likely helps them to feel connected. By explaining it to another person it gives the sense of it being explained in a more personal way to the viewer. Well coordinated and put together. Not that you need my uneducated opinion to know that. Lol

I’m assuming ADAM and JOSS will be working on their own videos (though probably coordinating with each other and helping each other) as we didn’t see Joss in this video other than the cameo at the end? The Vox journalist are the best story tellers and they seem to get better when not constrained by an employer and are able to do what they want.
I just graduated with a BS in Neuroscience & Cognitive science, and while i knew all of the information, this video genuinely helped me connect all the details I’ve learned over the past few years
For anyone who would like to learn more about the “Unwelt”, I highly recommend the book “A immence world” by the British-American author, science journalist and Pulitzer winner, Ed Yong. Every page of this book is a mind blowing
That was a lovely video, and the analogy of parallel world experiences at the end was certainly smile-inducing! Really excited for what’s to come next!
The final part of the video illustrates how, as a species, we all inhabit the same Earth, yet each of us perceives it so uniquely that if aliens were to ask us individually what Earth is like, our responses would be so different that we wouldn’t even recognize one another’s descriptions. It would be as if we were saying, " No, That’s not Earth!" 😅

The discussion around dogs processing smells like we process vision is really interesting as I have a 13 yr old Jack Russell who went blind 3 years ago. While he does bump into things, overall he's very good at navigating the house. Cool video!
@@Howtown a dog doesn’t understand blind so they do whatever to get through life Pansy seemed to like the challenge of a new place. If you have ever spent time with a Westie you’d get it.
My dogs stay on their beds when I go downstairs after showering and applying perfume. They know I'll be going out without them. Any other time I go downstairs they get up to follow me. Side note: Are Adam & Cleo an item? They make each other smile. 😍
The occipital lobe, or visual cortex, could just be the 3D modeling part of the brain. Incorporating sight, sound, and smells into a 3D model of our surroundings.

Our Pansy went blind from diabetes. We were amazed at how well she'd do in strange places.
