Ink Circles Mixed Media Digital Art - Creative Process for Abstract Art in Procreate for iPad

  • Today’s tutorial is for a mixed media piece that was inspired by a supporter who was curious about my “creative process” and asked me to make a video explaining it.
    Canvas Dimensions: 3000 x 2000 pixels
The brushes (including stamps) and palette I'm using are from my Mixed Media bundle for Procreate, which is available for sale at the following link: shop.alainajensen.com/b/u2Cj9
The piece I am doing for this video is unplanned. I just have a vague idea of what I would to make - “blobby” is the word that comes to mind! We will simply go from there and see what develops.
Part of my process is to look at the blank canvas and think about what kind of a shape I would like to create. I visualize colors and white space and get an overall “feel” for it. A large part of my process is done by feel - visualizing something, and then playing around with it until it feels right - like a satisfying click in my brain.
Sometimes I do spend a long time on the background or different aspects of a piece, only to end up disregarding or covering it up. However, this is all part of the creative process. I never know just where I’m going until I arrive!
I do love a neutral mixed media piece with a hint of color. What I enjoy about mixed media is that it’s almost like designing a room in a home. Some script here, squiggles there, and a blobby ring in the corner with some flowers growing out of it. Not quite right? Add some off-white texture until your brain starts to hum and sing with the “rightness” of it all.

Thanks so much for doing this, I found it really helpful. Even if you just “feel like it needs something here”, that’s helpful to know. Knowing that you look for (or avoid) symmetry is useful. I’ve done a fair amount of landscape photography, so I tend to think about things like “the rule of thirds”, but art is sometimes a little different when you’re presented with a blank page instead of a mountain range (although I can see positioning focal points could follow that rule). It looks like you try to repeat things, too, presumably for cohesiveness across the piece? It’s always nice to see an accomplished artist decide they don’t like something they’ve done and go back and try again!

Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment Vicky, I really appreciate it! And that's very generous of you to call me an "accomplished artist" 😅 I definitely don't see it that way as I'm still learning all the time! As I made this I realised afterwards I do often visualise the rule of thirds as I'm making abstracts, though I don't always do it consciously. I will definitely keep exploring this and try to keep bringing videos that can help others with the composition process, and as always I appreciate your feedback.

Thank you. Loved the idea. I have my grandma’s autographed book going back to the 1800s. And this might be a nice way to preserve words and the beautiful calligraphy they had back in those days.

What a wonderful idea! I love that. You could take a photo of it and import that so that you could move it around the page like putting it in an album 🤩

Thank you so much for showing how just starting a blank canvas and letting your intuition take you can have such beautiful results. So subtle and less is certainly more! That's where I struggle so this was really valuable. I only just found your site and YT videos today from recommendations on Jennifer Nichols FB page and I'm really glad I have! The brush sets look amazing so I'll consider those too and although I am only 6 months in to using my iPad and Procreate don't want to buy loads of sets and then not use them. I've found already that love making and experimenting with my own brushes too and your art has given me much inspiration. Thanks again!

Hi Sally, thanks so much for your comment and I'm really glad that you found the video helpful! Jennifer Nichols is great, I love her artwork 🤩 If you are interested in making your own stamps to use on a composition like this you can absolutely do that as well, the sky is the limit! I have a tutorial on how to make a stamp here if you are interested: czcams.com/video/LxV1Xxu-qZQ/video.html

Hi there! Most of my brushes require Apple Pencil for pressure sensitivity, and I don't think that second generation iPads are compatible with Apple Pencil unfortunately :( So, if you have the Procreate app, the stamps brushes would probably work ok but the dynamic brushes wouldn't.
