Damn if he just accepted his role as Pierce, he would’ve had a similar comeback that Danny Devito has had. Honestly still wish he knew there is a ton of people that would thank him for the 4 amazing years of Pierce we got
Danny DeVito needed a comeback?... The man is a legend.
@@ShortHandedNow Not necessarily a comeback, but it definitely rejuvenated his career. Many, including me, consider Frank to be one of best roles he ever had.
Shasha Rahman pierce was probably the funniest character in the show!
TRUE!!!
There’s definitely a difference between Danny and Chevy. Danny was still making a lot of stuff up until he was cast in the show in 2006, Chevy’s last leadings role in a mainstream movie was Vegas Vacation in 1997 after that he was doing guest star appearances, failed TV shows and straight to DVD stuff for kids
Why does this have HUGE Bojack horseman vibes. Chevy is Bojack and the reporter talks about him the same way Diane does ghostwriting bojacks biography lmfao

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve got my opinions about Chevy and know the stories, but this reporter is awful. He’s not bringing anything new and making his interviewee feel isolated rather than actually exploring who he is.
Completely agree! He just kept pushing Chevy into a corner, reminding him how much he's despised by others and playing back recordings of the lowest points in his life. What kind of human being does this, especially after being invited into their home?
I think perhaps Chevy is a bit more complicated and that is a simplification of how hard it is to open Chevy up but I definitely there is some truth to your statement. I think ultimately we would have gotten maybe a few more inches beneath the surface but Chevy is pretty set in his ways and closed off.
Google "chevy chase article long" and click on the Washington post link (Sober and ready to work) for a good longform piece on Chase from two years ago. Prob tells more about Chevy than anything else.
I felt the exact same way about it
I couldn't agree more. It seemed that Chevy might have been ready to explore some issues, but that's not really possible when the focus is always on how much people hate you.
This is so ironic and sad. Just like his character in the sitcom, Community, Chevy felt he’s the outsider and always left out by the group. He just wants to be like and to belong.
Then he needs to work to actually connect with the group instead of lashing out at them, I wouldn’t want him in my friendship group if he constantly made racist remarks about a friends skin colour like Chevy did with Donald
I read a bio on Chevy once. He actually was abused as a child, had a terrible family life. At the time of the book, they said he still was trying to work through those issues . I have to think that subconsciously that is where the anger is from.
@@terrymanuszak7118 that's very sad to hear. But it is still his responsibility to deal with those feelings and seek help rather than alienating everyone around him with hurtful comments, etc.
@@carlyreagan6744 a lot of people that deal with situations like that, especially as kids, really don’t know any other way than how they act and they see it as “that’s how it’s worked for me, this is how I get by”

@@alexbeats6741 The weirdest about it all is that he didn't even noticed.

Ah, very clever
@Shannon Darring So the shirt is wet and they can't chop it up. If it's dry .. then wet... Then dry then you will notice the edits. So they can't make him look bad.
That would be clever if he said anything negative before the spill but it was wet from the gate. Definitely the Alzheimer’s. They got what they needed.
This interview is absolutely horrendous! Whatever Chevy Chase may or may not be, he invited you into his home only for you to antagonize him, remind him how others think negatively of him, and overlay the entire segment with the most degrading narration possible. This is exactly how you turn any human being into an arsehole -- by pushing them further and further into isolation, giving them no choice but to become the most extreme version of what they believe others already perceive them to be.
I honestly feel terrible for Chevy just watching this. You exploited him in the worst way. Just disgraceful!
Ricky Couture 100% agreed such a strange interview
I don’t worship him but the interview clearly does not like him and it seems that he is trying provoke him, I do wonder if he spilt the water on him self to stop them editing the footage to make him look bad. All in all the interview is a bit disrespectful.
@igeto12 Anyone should be able to exercise prudence and politeness in a project featuring another person. What was WaPo trying to achieve with this interview? Because it seemed like they just went in there to bother Chevy Chase without accomplishing anything. This interviewer and the editors involved just wasted this man's time, theirs, everyone else's, and they subjected everyone to a more selfish and gloomier picture of the world.
Fcuk the media! Chevy Chase is the man!
calm down, lmao! chevy's fine.
Watching Community, you'd never know he didn't like his part being written the way it was. He knocked it out of the park every time. I've watched interviews with McHale and he is incredibly careful with his words on Chevy. I think McHale thinks Chevy has some valid points about how his part was written but doesn't want to upset Harmon either.
Yeah I just don’t think he fully got the humor of the show unfortunately. It’s understandable that he didn’t wanna be the butt off the joke, but Pierce was kinda the scapegoat of the group. That’s not to say he didn’t have his good moments though, and it was clear that he just wanted to be accepted and included.
True, but I will defend Chevy's assertion that Pierce was being written a bit too horribly. Like he said to Glover, the character was becoming too racist and intolerant, and it felt out of place for him
@@cameronhodgetts920 and too many small parts for Pierce... Chang and Pelton were getting more screen time. Did those two deserve it? Yes..but they could have fleshed Pierce out better than they did...include him more after he made it clear he wanted to be included after Advanced Dungeons and Dragons.
I think you hit it right on the nail. Even when the drama was at its freshest, Joel was always careful in interviews to be watchful of his words about Chevy the person and never said anything bad about him. I also saw when Joel was doing the press run for the movie "A Futile and Stupid Gesture" in 2018 (in which Joel literally plays the young version of Chevy Chase and his time with National Lampoon, SNL and his first few movies) that Joel said he talks to Chevy often to just catch up and see how he is. He even showed Chevy the final version of the movie for his approval and Chevy reportedly was very please with how Joel played him. I think Joel was one of the only (at least publically) people from the show who was actually on Chevy's side and felt that he was not in the wrong to be upset, but knows Chevy could've handled it a little better
He and Ken Jeong got a pretty raw deal, I think. Everyone got to grow and become more three-dimensional, but they just became more and more absurd and unlikable. I totally get that there were issues behind the scenes with Chevy not liking the long hours and being difficult... but it's also clear Harmon punished him in the scripts, and that just made it worse. Toxic goes both ways sometimes.
He’s human, he’s not an untouchable perfect sweetheart actor. This interviewer portrayed him as only an actor. “They’re focused and obsessed with his reputation as a villain.” Thats literally what the interviewer did this entire story.
yeah pretty much washington post at it's best.
The fact he said it without irony, bro thats EXACTLY what your doing, this reporter sucks, he actually makes me like Chevy and hate him
I actually kinda like his image. To me, it's pretty badass that he's not trying to look like a goodie two shoe. He's rebellious: a very unique trait for an actor and I'm actually kinda peeved that they did both Chevy and Pierce an injustice by not using his character to his fullest potential. He was the only character to make me laugh out loud on Community even though the show was more of a feel-good show than a comedy to me.
I mean most of the people he worked with hate him, says something about his character.
Well that's not true at all.
Chevy HAS to be in the Community movie. There's no way Pierce is above faking his death. Haha
At least in flashbacks
Also the fact that he “masturbated himself to death” is definitely something Pierce would come up with because throughout the show he’s constantly insecure about having erectile dysfunction. I wish him, Dan, and the cast would make amends and do a movie together.
To be honest ever since cooperative polygraphy (the episode where pierce bequeathed his belongings) I felt like they were setting up the fact that he did fake his death. Because I have a hunch that the movie will have a scene wherein the tracker that abed put inside pierce's body will move and that's how they'll know where to find him.
But hey, that's just a theory. A community theory!
Dark timeline Pierce faked his death after being shot, and it'd be funny if they made it seem like Chevy didn't change between the timelines and he's not above faking his own death.
Well....they’d have to address how Abed tried to get the tracking device he secretly placed in Pierce’s body which is now in the ground somewhere
I feel sorry for him. He’s a damaged person. I can feel the pain emanating off him, even through my screen. It’s wild.
I feel this too
I see it too. My heart goes out to him, I imagine he's hurting a lot and this maybe makes him hurtful to others, I dunno.
same, very much so :(
This is why despite how hate-able Chevy has been, I just can't hate him. There's something about him, like there's a piece of him that's broken inside so that he could never fully function as a human being. I have so much respect for his wife. It's tough to love someone like him. She's surely been through a lot.
Don’t. I waited on him in 2010. Him and his entire family hate each other and they’re drunks. He drank a ton of red wine. He was an as shole. And I was obsessed with him…
4:22 “I don’t wanna see it. It’ll just hurt. It’ll just hurt.” Wtf omg 😢 idk the full story about him but all I can say is THAT IS SAD. this man is old, I feel so bad for him 🥺

Anna Espinosa religion aside, I agree. For decades most of the population said that bill Cosby was an amazing man… He is the only example we will ever need to refute people’s claims that people are good because they see them on TV yet they don’t know them at all.
He would not made it back then if it wasn't for his good looks. Times changed, one get older, and more difficult to meet the competition from younger people. There are many funny young and pretty people out there in the que outside the Hollywood studioes. If one in addition to being 'old' is a bit 'difficult' to work with, it doesn't help. Show business is hard.
@@Rimrock300 yeah I do see that, but its the antagonistic approach against him that is apparent. Even in this interview, questions seemed preloaded to make him feel embarrassed or awkward. It's exploitation. Someone at the top wanted him dragged through the mud. What you see here is the end result. A defensive person is never going to be a crowd pleaser.
Planet Duh I must admit I don't know much of the story with Chevy since the 80's to now. I grew up back then and remember well his movies from the height of his career. I don't want to judge or something, it's not of my buisness, but it struc me a bit seeing the interview that why didn't his wife, or who she is, at least made him shave and put on a shirt, when being interviewed. Maybe she did, and he didn't care. Fair enough, looks like he is relative okay, cozy house, not living alone, doing his life not caring too much what others might think and say negatively about him
This interviewer was obviously trying to make Chevy Chase look old and petty, but to me the interviewer was the one who looked petty.
I searched up Chevrolet but chev Chase come up so I clicked it lol
I thought he was just trying to speak clearly and get his points across without wasting Chevy's time.
Oh dude that's not what I got out of this at all! If anything he was being completely honest, and did not make him look bad at all!
I saw Chevy chase as someone the media stated was hard to work with, but thanks to this, I am reminded that he is a man like everyone else! We all get old, we are all going to get old... And even though he has a bad rep now that outweighs his good deeds....
He's still Funny. And he still did those good deeds... We must remind ourselves that perfection is only a disappointing farce, and we are so far from it, that its presence would actually bother our very existence...
Yet we continue to thrive for it, "Trying to catch the end of the rainbow" a literal impossible task... Maybe he wont change who he is, but that's not for us to decide anyway so why do we care what he does in his personal time?
No. He's a good interviewer. He asked him what we were all thinking, and Chevy handled it like a wise man.
Finally.
I dont think so. I think the interviewer likes Chevy and prob wished he could talk to the young Chevy and not what he has become. He didnt have to make him out to be old and petty. He is old and petty. I hate to see what he has become and I wish he was on screen more today, but I still like him even now.
"You're not funny. You're okay." is somewhat along the lines of what Bill Murray said about Chevy when they were on SNL (medium talent).
I think that stayed with him for all these years.
Chevy Chase is inherently funny. It's inborn thing. Understand? He thinks funny and talks funny. He has a great sense of humor. Never mistreated women. You feel me? Are you smellin' what I'm steppin on?
I know Chevy. I worked with Chevy.
And I'm a foreigner who was hardly good in spoken English. Bill whom I had also the pleasure of working with is the 2nd most miserable man I've ever met. Seth MacFarlane takes that honor. Chevy was huge box office superstar in the 80s. Chevy can open a movie by himself. Bill needs co stars. Chevy can write. Chevy can play music. Bill can complaint and bitched.
@@ltcolumbo9708 this whole comment sounds like something Pierce would write, pretending to be someone else.
Bill and Chevy are both extremely talented.
@@Tmanowns difference is though Bill could adapt with the times and got comfortable in a type of role that suited him whilst Chevy just keeps digging himself further and further into a hole
"I think that stayed with him for all these years." He's said Bill was being immature. So nah.
I’m not sure it was exactly that way. Chevy started on SNL in season 1 and became a huge star overnight. Murray wasn’t even on SNL in the first season, though they did work together at National Lampoon. Chevy left after the first season and Murray took over his role on Weekend Update. I’m sure there was a lot of pressure for Bill to be just as hilarious as Chevy, causing tension between the two. When Chevy returned and hosted SNL in 1978 they actually fought each other right before Chevy took the stage for his monologue, but I doubt Murray was telling Chevy he wasn’t funny since at the time Chevy was a much more popular comedian than Murray.
Honestly Chevy just seems like a hurt man. And I hope he feels better soon.
If you were a kid in the 80s you cannot lie, Chevy Chase was the Dad we all wanted to be and still want to be to this day. Thanks for the inspiration Mr.Chevy Chase!

Many years ago my grandmother was at a doctor's appointment at a famous hospital in Los Angles and I was with my father waiting for her in the waiting room.
I noticed a guy walk into the room from the outside hall, and sat down right next to another man. It caught my attention because we were the only people waiting, there were plenty of seats so it was odd for someone to choose a seat right next to someone else.
Then the guy took his hand and put it on the guys knee and started moving his hand up his thigh.
The guy waiting jumped up suprised and realized it was Chevy Chase, Chevy glanced at me and had a sly smile on his face, and I was laughing pretty hard.

It’s kinda heartbreaking seeing something like this. All these big new names felt fine kicking around a broken old guy, who really did revolutionize comedy. Old people get grouchy, and sometimes you just have to deal with it. Posting the voicemail for thousands to see after you mock him? That’s just horribly insensitive.
He was a dick when he was young and he's a dick now. We all pay for our sins when we get old.
I think guys like Steve Martin and Bill Murray had a much bigger effect on comedy during this period. Chase now comes across like Jerry Lewis during his very bitter years.
Harmon regrets leaking the voicemail but he thought he was doing it for a small audience. One person just happened to pull their phone out and record it.
I'd put Chevy in the same bag as those guys though (from late 70's to early 90's), even though somehow Bill has continued to stay active and relevant to this decade.
To be fair Harmon's a pretty broken guy too, and he's not even old. Not that that justifies his actions, but I think there's plenty of forgiveness to go around.

That his experience on the tv show doesn't define him and isn't the sum of all he is and has done. He stumped the interviewer there and ended the conversation his way.
Someone here recommended the recent Netflix interview with Norm MacDonald interviewing Chevy Chase. I totally recommend that one. Chevy Chase was hilarious in it and it's a much much much better interview than this in my opinion. This interview was basically looking at the sad things that have happened to him. While sad, it was certainly a one sided interview and it didn't look at all aspects of his career.
The Norm MacDonald interview certainly shows Chevy in true form. He's relaxed, he's in a great mood, he's funny, and Norm asks him all sorts of questions on his amazing career. After watching that, it's very very very clear to see that Chevy has had wayyyyy more positive times that bad ones.

From 1975 to 1989 he was THE MAN! His star fell after that, but I'll always be a fan. He more than paid his dues and has made MILLIONS of people laugh over the years and for that, I thank you Chevy.
Chevy Chase should be known for how funny of a man he was. This entire interview was made to antagonize him. He had a few rough years, but it's hard to come back when people only want to see you fail so they can get a exclusive interview or something. He deserves to be known as a great comedian, dont try to take that away from him
I don't think this interview is antagonizing him I think it's trying to show that he's human and not the monster he's made out to be.
I don't see him as either funny or horrible: I think he is charming. I've only known him from Community but something about his demeanor attracts the eye. I am not gay either but he's fun to watch on screen.
It's just showing for who he really is. Honestly idgaf about all the drama, I really really want him on the movie. Community is not the same without him
I am certain Chevy knew that he would be asked these questions, pre warned if you will.
And yes I 100% agree he will always be known and indeed seen as a great comedy legend/actor we can't change that, but he is a miserable bagpuss as well, which we can't deny also.
Dude he was so funny and likable on screen people put up with his bullshit
Very weird interview. Chevy Chase is brilliant and criminally under appreciated.
Veronica Vaquer diva attitude though, little out of touch with the times he’s my favourite but he’s not pc a reason I like him.
If he is 'brilliant', then who sucks?
Say what you will, but he will always be one of the greats! His unique approach to comedy has influenced so many of today's comedic actors.
4:24 "I don't want to see it, It'll just hurt." 😢
Chevy will always be streets ahead
I know
Hes not a bad person hes just really really old school and that doesn't really translate well anymore
Yeah, telling AIDS jokes at the height of the AIDS crisis to the first openly gay SNL character. "Old school"
Smile, I think your right.
I guess he made it in the 70's much because of his looks, quite handsome back then, and had a kind of humor that was a hit back in the days. Without his looks he would never made it. More of a kind of superstar with in a niche, which was quite big back then but the fans have been fewer and fwer/grown up. Not something that one could float on for decades after decades. He was not able/willing to 'call it a day' when the 'game was good', and change work.
that's called being funny
@@BrodieChree you are the definition of beta male......cry some more plz....
Okay, okay we like you. Now close the refrigerator door!
Okay okay... you must go get some help
IKR
he's a good dude deep down. he just seems sad
Most of the people who have actually worked with his, and spent time with him will tell you otherwise.
Larry Lee Moniz elaborate
Michael Osorio he’s saying that people who have firsthand spent time with Chevy would deny him of being a good dude. Joel McCale who plays Jeff has said that Chevy was nice although he admits of him having bad remarks. Some people who have met Chevy would think of him as a good guy.
Chevy is the type of comedian that makes a mistake and makes sure to never make that mistake again but creates new ones and it’s heartbreaking cause he has talent
This interview is a load of rubbish.
Chevy Chase is part of that cast that once made Saturday Night Live the best on TV. I hope he gets a chance to make another great movie or appearance.
He says what he wants and doesn't feel a need to be PC(a requirement for today's comedian in a crowd intolerant of a politically incorrect comedian)
Django Fett lmao... why do you think I didn't watch the first season of Saturday Night Live? Did you?
I'll make no assumptions.
I do not recall the episode with Paul Simon.
Cheeburger Cheeburger Cheeburger! You got too much of that special sauce buddy.
Visteo, Chase had literally nothing to do with the Cheeseburger Skits. he did the opening prat-fall, weekend update, played the president, and did land shark. that is pretty much it. a few joke commercials as well. Chase's entire contribution to that show can be put on a 1 hour highlight reel. hes NOTHING compared to his replacement bill murray, and hes nothing compared to his original cast mates.
what about last laugh?
I will always have big love for Chevy Chase as i grew up watching his films & he's a childhood hero of mine & his hilarious films have gotten me through some hard times, a true comic legend
Why does he feel the need to still prove he's funny? He's already achieved so much. I'm surprised he even cares what people think.
When people get old like him, their mind can go wrong or not be in touch with reality. It will happen to us all if we don't die other ways.
Chevy Chase was one of my hero’s growing up along with Steve Martin and robin Williams (Rest in Peace) and he helped shapes my life in ways unimaginable. I love him in community and to this day. I’ll still go back an watch old SNL’s and movies with him in them for happiness and inspiration. Thank you Chevy ❤️❤️
I like this from an article earlier this year:
Speaking to The New Yorker about his time on Community, Glover said he viewed Chase as a legend who refused to recognize he was at the nadir of his career. “I just saw Chevy as fighting time - a true artist has to be O.K. with his reign being over,” Glover said. “I can’t help him if he’s thrashing in the water. But I know there’s a human in there somewhere-he’s almost too human.”
Alot people have a hard time having multiple viewpoints on one subject, one person because they don't perfectly match our ideological preferences. We don't have to make up excuses for Chase to understand he is a genius, and understand the man is also angry, borderline hateful.
Well said. He is a legend who is deeply flawed and has a complex history to say the least.
can't thumbs up enough
He doesn't care if he is not who he is expected to be.
He can't be accepted just the way he is.
He is misunderstood and thats not his problem.
Or he's just chilling and doesn't care about social conformities
I like Donald but he keeps saying the same ole BS about Chase. Truth be told PC came and Chase jokes were made to be an example.
He’s acting like that cause he’s old, he complaint about the hours on the show, and it shows that they didn’t consider how old he is.
Damn he was literally Pierce incarnate, bro was made for that role
Man this interviewer pissed me off. Chevy chase has already proven himself he is true comedy
He's crushed. A confident genius smashed and stepped on and doesn't know what to say or how to act. They are jealous Chevy, they are jealous.
No one is jealous of a well known pervert prick
I like Chevy but if it’s jealousy why doesn’t this happen to all talanted people?
@Fluke Exactly. People too stupid to accept valid criticism always write it off as "jealousy".
That's what he tells himself hes a narcissistic prick who wanted the spotlight and didnt get it and wouldnt accept he did anything wrong
I feel like every community actor was actually the character they were acting,
WallFlee except Donald glover
No, Danny Pudi is definetly not Abed
It’s basically just Chevy and John
@@paddymurphy7209 You mean Joel (McHale), right?
Peter Parker ya lol it’s not
Like he’s funny anyway
No matter what, I will always love and respect Chevy Chase! He may have an ego and temperamental issues, but I know he's not a perfect person. He is a hilarious comedic actor and a tremendous staple of my childhood.
~Dutch
He's still my favorite Community character.
He is literally a real life Pierce. He wasn’t needed to play, just be yourself Chevy 🤣
@j mula yep, everything went downhill after they his role in season 4 lessen. Then he finally left season 5, Donald follow and then Shirley on season 6.
Community was great for 1, 2 and 3. After that its a bit meh.
@@tekunachikushi9847 5 was great , 6 had a few good moments.
Man I miss community
6 Season and a movie
@@killerqueen1501 a movie without chevy isn't worth watching.
I dont care what they say about him, I love him for the movies he gave us especially all the national lampoons.
He already had an incredible career. It just could’ve been so much more... He will always be Fletch and Clark Griswold to me.
I'll always look at him as Clark griswold.
Watch him on the new Norm MacDonald show on Netflix, very sharp and funny
The John Belushi impression had me in stitches
'scuse me, we're talking
Jordan Campbell loved that
AH! I was kinda wondering why all these Chase hit pieces were coming out lately, including this one. This is why. He went on Norm's show.
That was the best episode. Couldn't stop laughing
7:04 You know he’s a villain because he leaves the refrigerator door open.
He got so good at acting pierce, he became pierce
Actually Pierce became Chevy. They wrote Pierce's character around Chevy's personality, that's why he becomes more of a villain as the show goes on.
What Chevy doesn't get is that people want to love him. It's not that they're jealous. It's that the reality is just such a disappointment. Of course, that could be said of a lot of Legends. Don't meet your heroes, right? That's definitely something he could fix if he really wanted to. He just needs to get over the fact that he's Chevy.
7:14 - I can just hear my father screaming "close the fridge!"
You too, eh? Happens to me every time I open my own fridge, even 45 years after I last heard those screams.
I hate your picture
He is hilarious 😂. Some of us never stopped loving him and finding him hilarious. Glad to see he is human too. I kind of figured he was more than a comedic legend.
Community just wasn’t the same without this guy ngl
You're a great guy Chevy! I love every single show you're in, you're super talented and funny. You still make me laugh to this day.
This tries to paint Chevy as a some sort of criminal when he’s just trying to live his life
Didn't help himself to be fair though
TheStrober Well put yourself in his position
@@wasppaul3707 Okay, I would make more of an effort to be on the same wave length as my colleagues and not make racist comments in front of Donald Glover
TheStrober Ya just skim over his entire life and career and pluck the parts that paint him as a criminal
@@wasppaul3707 he could simply not to dthose actions
I think he’s insecure and he’s always been insecure and it just got covered and worsened by his fame
this man has an ultra confidence and one of the thickest skins ive ever seen i dont think he s insecure but i do think he regreted alot of things and wishes he would change some stuff in the past ...maybe
@Blind Brazilian Tex Atlantis yeah beside the movies i meant how he talked to people maybe he thinks that he shouldve been nicer to them ... maybe i dunno
