This idea came to me one day as I was working on another video. It was more or less something me and my editing friends discussed as a cool what if story than it was supposed to be an actual AU video. But then I found this song, got a whiff of inspiration, figured I didn’t have to do that much masking anyways and went to work.
If this video looks a bit confusing…it’s because it’s kinda supposed to be? I guess XD. I wanted to make this more similar to an AMV than an actual crossover, mostly because I made very few changes to the original movie’s story.
Also because the song is so short there were things I couldn’t show so lemme get everything out of the way:
Proteus & Sinbad (+ their past):
Much like in the movie, they were best friends as kids. Sinbad, a poor boy on the streets, and Proteus as sole heir to the throne. 10 years prior to the start of the story, Sinbad ended up being so poor he had resulted into stealing from upper class nobles. Proteus finds out about this and is furious. Sinbad defends himself, and this causes a falling out between the two of them. He splits and leaves for the open ocean. When they reunite, Sinbad tries to play it cool but Proteus still deeply resents him for what he did and how he still continues to excuse his actions. Later when Sinbad claims Eris framed him, instead of offering himself for substitution, he offers to be a “babysitter” of sorts, to tag along with Sinbad as he gets the book back.
Monster Attacks:
The sea monster is moved until later in the story (which yes means there’s no action scene for the beginning of the film, but this is on purpose) where Sinbad and Proteus save each other and this has them start to rekindle their relationship. Ideally, while not shown, the fish island and snow bird also happen in the story, but the siren portion is completely removed since that wouldn’t work anymore without Marina.
Marina:
She ain’t here fam XD. Listen, Marina is an awesome female character, one of Dreamworks’ best. But she barely has a role with Proteus taking her place so I just decided she won’t be in the story.
Eris:
Eris’s plan works a little differently here. In my mind it’s pretty similar to the movie except for one fatal difference: Proteus. She figured if Proteus died on the mission (hence all the monster attacks; yes i changed her motivation for this) that this would cause a war between the 12 cities causing “glorious chaos”.
Romance:
Truth be told, I originally wrote this in mind with the two of them just being friends and rekindling their friendship (i like my bromances). But then I edited that boat scene XD. So now apart of the reason Sinbad ran away was because he couldn’t stand the idea of the friend he had feelings for resenting him for his mistakes. Do they get together in the end? Does Sinbad get friendzoned? I think you can figure out which route I went lol.

You're saying you didn't have to make so many masks but then gave us childhood flashbacks + had to insert Proteus into so many scenes xD I honestly think you did a great job, and I don't think it was confusing at all? It seems pretty straight-forward and easy to follow imo, and it shows their development and rekindling really well. I really need to point-out that from 2:18 to 2:48 the scenes work so well with the lyrics it's GREAT. My favourite part being "maybe this is where it ends" with the blade shattering, Eris showing up at "bad decisions that we made" and then "if we're going down in flames, take a bow" with her accepting her defeat and giving him the book like that's REALLY fitting.
Now, am I salty that you took out my fave girl Marina? yes, absolutely. Mabe one day I should edit my own private perfect AU for this movie where she and Proteus end up together xD
I went back to rewatch the movie, in the beginning. There is so much tension between Sinbad and Protues, I honestly wouldn't have been surprised if they were the ones who got together rather than Sinbad and Marina.
oh! if this was the actual plot of sinbad, i'd like that movie. :')
also the song choice and editing is top notch as always. 10/10, will watch again.

I sincerely love this. The editing is so clean and natural with the canon mixed with the manups. and I just love this pairing so muuuxh 😭😭😭 i think this would have made the movie so much better just having them together. I do love Marina and all but Proteus pining for Sinbad got me swooning.

This was amazing Meg I really like the story changes you made and honestly I always found Sinbad and Proteus’ relationship in the movie interesting and always thought it was a shame that he wasn’t the one on the journey for the book!! Super awesome and the ending where they sail off together yes!!!

I love this! I love the original movie but I'm definitely in love with this au, too! Proteus and Sinbad's friendship is so intriguing and it's a shame it's not explored more.

I hope you don’t mind that this idea and the beautiful work you did in this video kind of sparked a lot of thoughts in my head for this AU! ^^; I thought that, maybe, to keep the stakes up, when Proteus volunteers to “babysit” Sinbad, the council (I can’t remember if that’s what they’re called lol) still protests as they do in the movie, so Proteus’ father offers to take his place. Maybe after Sinbad stole from the nobles, Proteus got blamed for it a bit (not that he actually had anything to do with it, but just because they were friends, some people suspected that Proteus, directly or indirectly, was responsible in some way, giving Proteus even more reason to be mad at Sinbad for tarnishing his reputation), so Proteus’ father (I know he has a name, but I can’t remember that either), who has always believed in Proteus’ innocence, volunteers to take Sinbad’s place to prove his trust in his son and give him a chance to prove himself as trustworthy, so this is REALLY important to Proteus, and maybe he even threatens to go and find the book on his own if Sinbad won’t help, but after the first monster attack, Sinbad realizes how dangerous the adventure will be and that Proteus really needs his help and he wants to make up for what he did to him, personally, as well as sincerely enjoying their rekindling friendship.
This is more just personal wish fulfillment, but it’s always rubbed me the wrong way that, even at the end, Sinbad still at best had self-doubts that he would actually go back to free Proteus if he failed that weren’t at all explored in the movie, and at worst actively knew that he wouldn’t do it and thought he could get away with it by lying to a freaking goddess just to look good in front of Marina, so maybe in this AU, there could be a thread of him coming to terms with being too afraid to confront problems, first by abandoning Proteus to take the heat for his theft when they were kids and now wanting to abandon Proteus’ father. Something about where he desperately wants to look like a cool badass at all times because he’s genuinely afraid of having to face judgement, of looking vulnerable or weak by admitting to wrongdoing, so even though he would go back if he failed, he’s so afraid of the idea that he doubts himself and Eris feeds on that in order to make him feel like he’s lying when he says that he would go back, thus forcing him to fail. Through rebuilding their friendship, Sinbad has been dancing around opening up about his insecurities in emotional moments, but this would be the moment he has to finally break down and confess that he’s afraid of going back and admitting that he messed up.
This is out of order, but I also have been trying to think of a way to get Marina in this, and while I haven’t figured out a way to integrate her into the full story, I have thought that she could be tied into Sinbad and Proteus’ backstory by being someone who grew up poor in a similar situation as Sinbad, and when he goes to the party, still planning on stealing the book, he meets her for the first time since he left and she, maybe with some help because she showed promise and Proteus was willing to help out a friend who asked for help, was able to get an education and become intelligent political hotshot with influence and power, and this knocks the air out of Sinbad making him leave to be framed for the theft because what if he could have turned out like this? She can still be Proteus’ fiancé, or not, whatever floats whatever ship you want to ship. ;) I’ll probably continue trying to think of a way to keep her integrated in the story in this AU for a week lol
This was probably disjointed and confusing and I’m sorry, but this really inspired me, and I hope this rambling wasn’t too annoying! ^^;
Wow, this is a lot XD. But in a good way! I’m glad that people liked my AU so much that someone like you wants to expand more on it!
Proteus taking the blame for Sinbad’s stealing habits is suuuupppeeerrrr in character. I imagine that adds more salt in the wound when he sees Sinbad again, as aloof and still being a stealing scumbag as ever. Like, Proteus went through so much effort to make sure Sinbad didn’t take the blame and spend the rest of his life in prison, and now Sinbad comes back and doesn’t really care. Adds a lot of depth to the scenario!
I actually really like the idea of Dymas taking Sinbad’s place. I’m even imagining a scenario where they have this exchange:
“Dymas...you don’t-“
“I’m not doing this for you.”
*Sinbad pauses in realization*
“I hope my son hasn’t misplaced his faith in you....again.”
It definitely raises the stakes and adds more conflict to Proteus and Sinbad’s relationship. It’s also very personal to both of them, ESPECIALLY Proteus, so I love that addition a lot. Great thinking!

The reason he didn’t want to go back was because he genuinely didn’t believe the kingdom would kill Proteus, and a various of other things involving his insecurities. But no, in that scene he did not lie. Eris SAYS he did because she doesn’t want him to get the book. That’s why she’s so pissed at him when he shows up anyways, she was convinced he actually was that selfish. But he wasn’t. After spending time with Marina and reminiscing on his friendship with Proteus, he decides that he will go back. So, you’re alternative to the same scene is actually just the same scene XD.
I like the backstory elements for Marina. Truth be told, I did come up with an alternative where all three of them went on the adventure together, but I personally felt it to be too crowded? There’s a lot you’d have to change about the script to make it where it fit three people. Despite Proteus taking the front helm, I actually changed very little about the overall story. The structure of it remains intact. It’s Proteus and Sinbad as characters that are changed. Point being, that I support any AU where Marina’s involved, just in my own I couldn’t find a good place for her.
Did I ship this before? No. Do I ship it now? Why, yes. Yes I do.
