- Welcome to Tick Creek Ranch. This channel was created to show the daily ins and outs of life on a small ranch. We are a family of eight, our lifestyle has taken us from the deserts of Idaho to the wilds of Alaska and back to the lower 48. We followed our dreams and finally settled in the Ozark’s of Missouri. We have owned and operated our own businesses over the years, ranging from carpentry and excavation to commercial and residential landscape. The children and ourselves have developed a passion for learning new skills which include leather work, welding and fabricating, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, roofing, painting, equipment operation, timber sawing, blacksmithing, horseshoeing, flatwork and concrete, timber framing, cattle ranching, horse training, and many more. Please follow along on this journey as we build our new home and delve into the ways of regenerative ranching. So stick around and watch us create our dream using old world construction techniques and style reminiscent of an era gone by. Thank you and enjoy the journey.

We just posted part 2! Thanks all…
Thats ok up north but here in georgia termites would eat that like candy unfortunately. Cargo containers work best with concrete poured around them.
@@KidChaosH2O I bet they would
May I inquire where (what state, not location specific ) this is? Sadly, I so need one of these badly where I live(FL) but no possible way due to sea level preventing. So decided to move as I can’t handle it anymore. Open to any safe state. Thank you! Oh! Excuse me, I forgot to say congratulations as your amazing! Wonderful construction!
@@treegallagher9562 We are located in the Missouri Ozarks. Good people who love freedom and an old way of living but, don’t want and won’t let outsiders change their way of life here. Must assimilate if a person moves here. It’s still let’s say, a little wild here…oh, and lots of ticks:)
SUBSCRIBED! Dude I've been mulling over a build like this for years, watched a ton of vids, but this one really fills in all the gaps.
CONGRATULATIONS ON CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF BEING TOGETHER.🙏🇺🇲🎉👍🏻
Damn, you guys made this look so simple. Amazing what a good crew and machinery can do!
My crew is my kids and my father. They’re pretty good;)
@repentandbelieveinJesusChrist9 Gross. Comments like this are why everyone is turning away from your God. Stop proselytizing on CZcams.
Found your channel yesterday and watched every video you have for my Father's Day present lol. I think I speak for more than just myself when I say that if you put out more parts to your build series showing more of the process we wouldn't be disappointed. I know it's a lot of work but you guys are true craftsmen and it's a pleasure to see what you produce. Have a great day!
Wow! We sure appreciate the support! We will get out some more vids of the daily in and outs around here. Thank you!
Err What? Fathers day present is watching someone on youtube? Err What???
@@spaaggetii lol. My present to myself...
Someone has there thinking cap on!!! Great job
I realize "TO EACH HIS OWN" but I would have treated the wood with at least roofing tar before I put the tar paper on and I would have put a silcone in the joints to prevent water from getting to the insulation and wood. Also, I would have put another wraping of tar paper over the insulation. Still all considered, You did a good job.
Congratulations on 25 years together. Thanks for the video.
Thank you Marcus! Can’t believe she hasn’t killed me yet lol
Dude, that’s not a root-cellar/storm shelter,” THAT’S A FREAKING BUNKER” which I am very ok with
Naw fam, it's my root cellar.
Common storm shelter style from the 1930s.
If worried about tornadoes, you need a bunker. Anything less, the tornado can tear apart. Tornadoes have been known to peel asphalt right off a good condition road.
👍
If you’re gonna do it. May as well do it right.👍🏻
That’s what a storm shelter is
Awesome build. I took notes. Sane steps in an insane world.
Thanks Mike
Love that you used all lumber you milled yourselves. That's it right there. I can tell from watching yall how much heavier it is but in the end it's so worth it! Keep up the good work.
Great idea leaving the roof off to install the gravel. I certainly wouldn’t have thought of that haha! Work smarter not harder, as they say.
Gotta figure out easier ways when you get old and decrepit
Good idea. Much safer to have a good storm shelter. Nice.
Acceptable construction. Okay video. Thanks for sharing. 👍👍👍
Outstanding piece of work. Congrats to you and the wife on 25 years.
Brother I am an old guy that has done a lot of equipment operation and it was either great editing or you are an absolute wizard with that mini excavator. Good stuff and thanks for sharing.
Thank you sir. We used to own and operate an excavation business so we have a little seat time around here. We appreciate you watching! Thanks again Mark
I was an operator over 10 years and I know skill when I see it ❤️
@@Ruffbone85 just really good editing;)
@@tickcreekranch 😂 nah. I know better. Nice project
@@Ruffbone85 sure appreciate the support!
Really appreciate getting to see this whole process. Thank you
Just brilliant! Now that’s a real Anniversary gift!
Congratulations on 25. Less people are willing to work on a marriage.
I do love the fact there isn’t pressure treated wood to produce fumes.
Thank you! She definitely wants to strangle me at times, somehow she puts up with it:) If we can get 10 years, it will have served it’s purpose. Definitely didn’t want PT around our food plus this was extremely affordable considering we mill our own lumber👍
Congratulations to you both on your Anniversary an God Bless great work man!!!
Thanks Tommy!
That is AMAZING..
I have real issues with these shelters that have such limited access and look like death traps ultimately. This is a beautiful and safe, well thought out place of safety. Thank you.
It’s at least better than laying in a bathtub praying you don’t do the Mary Poppins
pretty great to see a family working together, hes pretty much like a surgeon with the excavator....nice content!
Thanks Keith 👍
Equipment is God's blessing to the rancher...
Happy anniversary and thank you for sharing this video with us.
Thank you Hilary
Very hard working young man !!! Be proud !!
This gal loved watching every bit of this build. You have great ingenuity, skill, cooperation, and communication skills. I look forward to part 2!
Wow, thank you!
How much in materials did this cost?
@@conniepr just under 2k but we milled every board from a log ourselves.
@@tickcreekranch Hard work!
Would love one of these if I lived in a rural area. Multi-purpose and extra storage too. The above ground style is definitely a bonus.
What part of Oklahoma I would do it in okc or Tulsa
Congratulations on 25 years!
You guys did a very nice job, I take my hat off to you all...
Thank you. Now for how well it works. Lol
Congrats on your celebration and thanks for sharing...very inspiring and I'm already seeking 2 do something similar ❤
Befy great craftsmanship men
Great build, guys. I'm generally 100% metric when I do anything (that's one-hundred-and-eleventy percent in Imperial.... 😉) but I do love the penny nail system. It's deeply rooted in British history and even further back. The "d" symbol is used for penny (and was still used for British currency until 1971) because is was shorthand for "denarius", dating back to Roman times. But it goes back even further when you consider that the penny system *almost* runs in Base 12, which pushes it back as far as ancient Babylon. Also the reason we count time the way we do! Fascinating.
Absolutely! I have an inquiring mind myself. I just had to know also so, 6 or 8 years ago I did my research on (p). Google…it’s a love hate thing:) Thanks Shaw
Wow! Very impressive! We live in tornado alley Oklahoma and my kids and I survived the big May 3rd tornado in Oklahoma. I was the liaison for Bridge creek and Newcastle I worked the disaster and it was horrible from homes, trees, pets, livestock it was bad. I have a shelter for my pets as well. The best place to be is underground in my opinion. A nice place to store your food.Have a blessed week! Wendy🙏🏻❤
That had to be a harrowing experience! I’ve never experienced a tornado, I strangely want to but, also don’t. I’ve been through many arctic cyclones but not a 🌪️. I love the fury and power of storms, it reminds me how insignificant we really are. Glad you didn’t end up like Dorothy. Thank you
@@tickcreekranch Good evening! You really never want to endure a tornado. An artic cyclone would be scary! I would love to have a root cellar and shelter like yours I was very impressed. I am glad I found ya'll
@@hardnackfarms1736 Thanks we appreciate your support!
@@tickcreekranch Your so welcome! I hope ya'll have a blessed week!
@@tickcreekranch. Come to the top end Australia mate. All the way from Western Australia coast to the eastern coast, massive wet season storms and Cyclones. Beautiful but deadly
It looks fine to me. I notice lots of experts commenting, most do not have a clue. They probably couldnt drive a 40P spike or grow food to put in the cellar. Great video
Too true! At least they can Google and masquerade as an expert anyway lol Thanks Rick
Looks excellent. Great work!
Happy anniversary, God bless!
Cool! You're building a shipping container. Cool!
Thoroughly enjoyed this video.
Well done and thanks.

Happy Anniversary to you and your wife. Many blessings.❤
Thank you Anndrea
Great work. Should provide years and years of safety during storms.. Good job guys! Better safe than sorry!.
Happy belated anniversary!
We are building a new homestead. You get me. I keep telling my hubby that my biggest concern is the root/storm cellar and bunker.
I will say it is built to last most if not all disasters, good operator on the excavator.
We hope so but, then again we’re no experts
Congratulations on the 25 years...
Very impressed! great job!
Circular wood cutting is a forgotten art. Nice dome affect too. Will be waiting for more.
Thanks J👍
Love it! Peace and Blessings
I love the the wood dimensions being a carpenter the cheap stuff we get now.
It’s sad, the only way is to mill your own now👍
Cool bunker/root cellar. Enjoyed this build so far. Stumbled across your channel & subscribed.
Thanks for the sub!
Your video popped up on my feed. That was fun to watch. I'm going to show my husband this and going to watch the next video. Hello from our homestead and ranch in Central Texas.
Please do! Welcome, and thank you for watching Jessica
Good job!
Holy cow well done
Heck yeah that should work great. We live NE OK and we see a lot of Tornadoes here. 👍
Not sure how well it would endure a “big boy” like you do, we seem to only get the 1 and 2s here ( never really know though) At least we’ll have cool veggies and canned goods lol. Thanks for watching folks!
You got a new subscriber after seeing part 2 for 30 seconds. Now first this part. I had read the comment of that lady who lost her husband. Got me tears because i live in the same trouble. But i'm strong and never give up. US Marine SC Veteran.
We really appreciate the support! Every time I think it’s tough, I remind myself someone somewhere is going through something much more difficult than I. Semper fi…

Congratulations on 25 years. Oh ya, and the build.
Thanks Ken. I can barely live with myself, don’t know how she has all this time lol
Nice to have real tools I'd be using a hand saw and drill some reclaimed nails from a found pallet and a butter knife. It came great thanks for sharing.
Life goals and good asmr
Cool great job
Took me a minute.....Guess you're in a much warmer climate than I am. Our shelters traditionally go a lot deeper but our frost line is like 18 inches down.
Thank you for sharing 😊
My pleasure 😊
Well made video. Subscribed and excited for part 2. Getting some good ideas from your channel. Good work dude!
very nice, great job
Great video!! Not something we will tackle soon, but when we do we will be back to make sure we get it right. Like y’all did. Be Safe!!
Thank you for watching!
Congrats on 25th anniversary to you and the miss's. Amen :)
Thank you Brent!
Excellent job, just found your channel...great video
I know it's wrong to be envious of others but dang it I am,😂.
Also I thought I had the most Ticks .
Beautiful job 😊
Thanks Darlene we appreciate it!
Love your work Bozz 🎉
Thanks Danny!
You can make that into a Tiny House. Great job on building a storm cellar
Thanks Brad. We’ve been discussing building a couple small cabins with walk out basements. It’ll sure help beat the heat
I been watching videos of Russians and hippies doing the same thing. I'm impressed with how much (10x or 100x) more productive y'all are! Got a better result a lot faster. Good work.
This is Awesome!
Great work🌺👍🌺👍🌺👍
Hard to think that the ridged insulation won't rot over time. Even walls that are partially underground give me water/mold issues. Will be interesting to see a video after a few years of weather.
Typically wood doesn't hold up to F3 F4 F5 tornadoes either. Need Concrete storm shelter.
You can design pretty much any material to withstand a tornado, given the members and attachments are strong enough. I'm more concerned about the wetting/drying cycles of the walls and roof causing rot, and if those rafters were only toenailed in (it's not a strong connection for uplift).
@@jakebredthauer5100 Who gives a crap about code, things can be built 20 times stronger than code but in a way that doesn't meet it's criteria. Having said that this really lacks in strength and longevity due to the likelihood of rot.
@@jakebredthauer5100code? Didn't realize there's a code for storm shelters and root cellars...
@@jakebredthauer5100 ventilation !!!!
I work in architecture as a technologist…putting drawings together for permit or construction up here in Canada. Looks good from here 👍
This was awesome! I live to far south to build a root cellar it would be a mud hole over night as to close to sea level. Why I want to move to the ozarks or Appalachia to get the 4 seasons and ability to have a root cellar/bunker
Thanks for videoing it, way cool. I love it, but I would not call it a root cellars, most fruits and veggies require a 70-90% humidity for long term unrefrigerated storage, thats why Grandfathers root cellar had a dirt floor, thats where the moisture for the humidity came from.Anyway wine cellar sound better. lol
We will add the moisture needed with open containers of water. It’s easier to add the humidity than to eliminate it. That’s the plan anyhow 👍
Be sure to post a follow up in 100 years when this thing is still standing. Amazing build from folks who definitely know what they’re doing!
Lol! Thanks Drew. I hope we get some good service life out of it. If we can control the moisture it should last. We appreciate you
What a fast moving video. A lot of work from a lot of people. Really nice equipment didn't hurt either. You got to work smart and you did. I'm a new subscriber.
Thank you Janet! We sure appreciate it:)

Good editing lol
Congratulations
BRILLIANT...🙂
Hats off to that operator
Got a couple hours in the seat😁
Very nice, family project
Try the ancient britons roundhouse style so the wind flows over and around!🤔 Good Luck!🤞👍
we had one when I was growing up here in Idaho. It needed some redoing. It must of been as old as the farm 1900s. My dad was thinking to redo the outside like this
We moved but my dad would of loved doing it this way
We hail from Idaho via Alaska! What was you cellar made of? Thanks
Rocks. Paved flooring. It looked like it had steel on all four corners that I could see and remember. steel top then dirt. Shelves were wood or whatever dad found some steel. Outside steps was steel and rocks. Doors all wood and on an angle. We wanted a different door too hard to open when it snowed and froze.
i like your build.
I've seen where a tornado cut a deep path in the ground as it broke trees off like they were balsawood. I believe that I would've had my storm sellar below ground level ! That sellar is just like a dirt mound sticking up in the middle of a flat area witch could get plowed up by a big enough tornado ! Just wanted to tell you that. Hope if you have to use it it holds up.
Thankfully there is no history of powerful tornadoes around this area but, you never really know.
Nice work, very professional!
Not too bad for a old worn out guy, a half worn out guy and a couple kids lol. Thanks for watching
you're a pretty descent operator, good vid.
