For all the money you spent on high dollar wood and everything to cover that up, you could have built one out of concrete that would have lasted 50 years
I've been in the building trades for 50 yrs & I'm absolutely amazed with the material used, the amount of labor, & the lack of foresight. The planning I'm sure worked out good & the structure itself if built above ground may be a well built idea but this is a waste of money & effort considering the material available today that could be used. In ten years this thing may be there but it's going to rot & decay making it a death trap for the fool hardy. This is an absolute disaster in the making. Has anyone there ever thought about what happens to raw wood buried in the ground? It rots from moisture & this will suck up every ounce of water around it. Mold & mildew will take over this palace first. The rest will be downhill from there. One heavy rain & you may even have an underground pond. You'll say I'm to critical or call me an a** but I have seen this before & sadly in 2024, I'm seeing it again.
Good thing it's a root cellar then. The owners aren't going to spend much time in there sheltering as all the shelves will be filled.
Concrete seems like a better choice
Way more expensive 💰💰💰
Issue number one, being in a low area it will flood, no amount of drainage can handle four inches of rain in ten minutes, issue two any form of wood utilization is a guarantee of rot. Just buy a container, raise it at least four feet above ground on a poured concrete foundation with cables attaching to the ground on all sides.
Doesn't look like low ground to me. In some of the shots there is plenty of ground much lower and not a lot higher.
Soil type, slope and drainage, and water table matter. Looked fine to me. They won’t have issues.
Exactly what I was going to say. Yellow pine sure isn't cheap where I come from.
Cinder block and basalt rebar. No wood at all. A lot of drainage, and pond liners to keep everything dry.
@@edsedlak6827 It's cheap when they are your trees and mill.
Lot of work just for a temporary wooden 1/2 underground storage.
I'm a retired contractor and I would never build mine like that. No where near good enough waterproofing for me. I would bet the farm inside will be covered in mold in a month.
I agree. Looks like mold already at 7:52.
Yep
Yeah that’s not a storm shelter in Tornado Alley, that’s a root cellar.
@@DiabloandaDP 😂 you mean a mold cellar
Good luck with the mold
I agree. Looks like mold already at 7:52.
Thank you for the update, TechFreeze..!! The shelter looks fantastic..!!
That really hurts , seeing someone throwing away money like that 😮 they could have done a better job ,using a metal shipping container , and completed the job for 1/2 the price
It’s not your money, so shut up
It’s not your money is it, Mary?
In Alabama, they use concrete septic tanks.
It seems that they had a ready supply of nice lumber. Also, they didn't have to pay for someone to deliver a shipping container. This cellar/shelter will be good for generations. Also, an underground steel shipping container would have to be reinforced on the top and sides to withstand the distributed force of the ground around and above it. Shipping containers are designed to take most of the forces at the corners, not against the entire side walls and roof.
shipping containers rust, wood can last over 100 years, example, mines in the southwest
Took me eight minutes to realize they weren't making really elaborate concrete forms and were just using wood for the structure.
Thought the same thing...nothing teaches like experience.
I was impressed by the skill of the excavator operator.
Great job! I'm envious of all that #1 lumber going into it! I'd have used exterior plywood and saved the beautiful lumber for interior home use.
Impressive but one thing I noted was that for a storm shelter I saw no Ventilation built in. If just for storage then I guess no need. but as the title suggest it is a storm shelter. Ventilation would be a necessity. Still very impressive!
True that,
This looks more like an underground cellar than like a stormshelter. No seatings for the people searching for cover? Wouldn't it be faster using a seacontainer as a shelter?
Build it out of concrete, longer lasting, safer, might even cost a little less.
You could have just sold off an old school bus, that would have been cheaper.
This isn't a storm shelter, this is a root cellar....
You beat me to it...
No conrete and I didn't see a single Hurricane strap being used to give the walls and roof more strength
Anyone in the tornado belt needs this, I live in Florida can’t do underground but something to think about. Our home was hit by Hurricane Ian with over 220 mph confirmed and a tornado at the same time. Shelters save lives period.
lived in the tornado belt my entire life, def dont need one of these lol
@@josephfernandes5004 until a tornado strikes your home, when your home is targeted you don’t need the shelter you want a shelter to survive then and after. Going on three years now and some people are just recovering from hurricane Ian.
Crikey I thought the concrete will be along soon when they used muck I switched off that is going to be useless in no time
I'm no expert, but all them rocks could be potential missiles while trying to get in the shelter. Think I would have just went with concrete.
Where i live i would've never went with wood. An old bus or rail car yes. Covered over with concrete. Definitely need an established venting system. Either way it was impressive looking.
What is the state of florida?
I believe the building sits on charred 6x6 beams, which sit upon sand
It will be a while before replacement
Great job. The only thing I would do differently is is put tar sealant over the felt paper on the walls
All these people with comments, you do you. They did a well thought out plan in an excellent manner. Guess how many would pray for a shelter like this when it’s tornado season.
If i were a betting man, based on the comments that allege storm shelter was incorrectly built, a waste of money, and contests stability, I am going to say none of the commentors would pray for this shelter during tornado season and thats my final answer regis. i thought hurricane season was over
very nice. in long run. might risk of termites, mildew etc..
Not sure how it's going to work in the future. I think water and humidity is going to be a huge problem in a few years.
Thank you for showing your construction. Time and effort well spent.

Engineering…
I want the cash spent on all that wood!

I agree that I didn't see any ventilation installed, but as for temperature, the earth will keep it cool.
The carpentry skill is excellent. However, embedded wood structures buried below ground with felt papers will fail in 20 years with water penetration.
Sheeet…that untreated wood won’t last 5yrs underground.
No membrane on the roof? Under or over the foams?
You guys think this is impressive now imagine how noah built the ark during the flood or consider how great god is to give the skill to his chosen people to bulid his tabernacle and temple no power tools. Thats impressive
Why not use Concrete?
It's easy to use it's durable over time and pocket friendly (at least here i don't know your prices)
A magnificent cellar! You did well.
Apparently you don't get alot of rain or snow there. Any kind of moisture is going to make it feel like a cave. It looks like a storage room rather than a storm shelter. Is it a winery storage room?
Why not use empty container
well that door is the weakest point and would NOT hold up to a direct hit from a tornado.... but it's better than nothing (and it sure is nice)
Quite a few underground homes in Israel,, less energy usage for heating and air conditioning,, consistent underground comfortable temperature...
Great craftsmanship!
I would build the same thing. What a great job...
That is one solid structure.
Should be building a fallout shelter
I love the door but don’t understand the cutting of excess screws? Did he not measure the length of screws required ?
Gostaria muito de fazer um pra mim.
This will be good for getting out if the wind as long as you don’t care about rotting, flooding, debris, cost, electricity, rodents, insects, and I’m assuming “turkey grit” is gravel….
too much shelving i thought it was going to be a tiny home to get away from the wife
outside NOT fill soil, need be graveö, water go out and keep wall dry. and wall need paint whit hot tar if want inside have dry., this style next winter and rain season inside have full water not water tight room.
If I'm going through all this I'll be building me a tornado/storm shelter next. This is a tool shed/man cave in the ground. 😂 Like 1 of the other comments said waste of money, for a shelter. That being the wood at most. It's only needing built for sturdiness and occupancy of how ever many people or pets. And for a temporary amount of time. 🤦🏻 Not a week stay.
Before you back filled the building you should have gotten some buckets of tar and coated the outer walls.
i think that's too much time and work just to dodge a rare tornado. My grandpa buried a small $400 plastic sceptic tank in the back yard with a ventilation pipe. The only purpose is to get out of harms way for a minute or so.
Didn’t the first bucket digs start on level ground?
would it be a lot easy just to buy a shipping container ?
what the heck is 'turkey grit' ??? do you mean "rocks" lol
Hello people reinforced concrete! Duh!!!!!
This world is full of screwballs😳
Excellent idea.
Surely buying a metal tube and doing yourself would have been way better?
Very good digging🤟
What is the end use?
I didn't see any rough ins for water or electric installations.
Nice! Just curious…. Why didn’t you chat all the wood if it helps preserve?
No gravity drain or stone backfill?
thats a real man cave
Video great hope you make more great videos including car creation
I'm just here for the comments! lol
Alot of work for little return...I don't even know what this is supposed to be. Storm shelter?
Where air vent?
I guess they don’t need it😂🎉
Donde está el hormigón???
I'm not in construction but, damn, that has to be the most unstable, potentially mold ridden structure I've ever seen. Way to rip off the buyer.
Wait .. does Idaho get tornadoes, hurricanes or the like?
why wouldnt you pour a concrete pad over a gravel base with a drain.
Could be easier to use a shipping container? Cost ?
10:36 dip?
why wouldn't you just get a steel shipping container? def way cheaper, less time consuming and probably half the price assuming your average joe doesnt just have an excavator laying around. The gravel alone is no cheap date...great video none the less, just doesnt make sense to me. also you failed to mention yan 811 call before you dug.
Do you think it's 1%useful in atomic war conditions
Great video makers please make even better videos
Do you need approval to build this shelter?
Almost everybody needs a storm shelter these days as crazy as the weather is
Is there a place where wood doesn't rot?
What if there is a flood situation?
Nice shelter good job but I think the front of it is going to fill up with water
Bani ingropati fara rost dupa o prima ploae mai serioasa devine NE LOCUIBILA
Root cellars need ventilation!
They built that with no place to put people. There were no places to sit.
