How many cups of DE powder do I need to add to my filter after cleaning/backwashing is such a common and very important question. This video goes into the dosage of exactly how much D.E. to add.

I use a 1 lb orange scoop for my DE filters. And I was advised that if my size grids is a 48
Sq ft, I would pour in 5 scoops of DE.
If 24 sq ft. I pour in 3 scoops of DE.
60 sq ft., I pour in 6 scoops.
So what gives and how do you really determine the amount?

Hey Erick, this has also been a confusing topic for me since the beginning but I would always say that if what you've been doing has always worked for you and you've had good results then don't overthink and continue using that method. The orange scoop is the standard that most often gets used and that's the one I use. The way that I determined the amount is by using the chart on the back of the DE Powder bag. I put up a quick picture of that in the video and you might want to pause and take a screenshot of that. The confusion is that I was always taught that the orange DE cup only "weights 1/2 lb of DE" if you were to put it on a scale. On the back of the bag it has the chart that says pounds (lbs.) and then below it says (scoops) and that's what I've always used. Again, if you have had success using your scoops then I wouldn't change it. I think it shows that there is no exact amount if we are that far off and both get good results.

A 1lb orange scoop does not mean you will get 1lb of DE.
What I did was I put a cup on a scale and zeroed it out. I then used it to scoop up DE and it weighed about 11oz… I did some math and converted oz to lbs. based on my numbers for a clean filter of 48 sq ft, I would need to add 7 scoops.
It’s the simplest way and most accurate way.
Everything else is a guess game. It may not affect anything, but if it gives you piece of mind I recommend that. Just realize every scoop may have slightly different weights.

@@arsevela33 You are the G.O.A.T! What you described is the only 100% way of doing it. Nobody carries around a scale and each scoop might be a little different depending if it is compacted down or not, exactly level, etc. Thank you so much for your contribution

How do you determine the size clamp for your filter? My current clamp no longer tightens. It keeps getting loose as I try to tighten the screw. So
How do I determine the size clamp for my Pentair FNS plus filter.
    48 sq ft.

Hi Erick!! I've had that happen with a different type clamp for a cartridge filter. The threads just wore out. You should just be able to Google or look up on Amazon for "Pentair tension control clamp". Local pool stores might have it but it will have a very high markup on pricing. I believe the clamp should be the same diameter for the different FNS sizes as the top lid appears to be taller but not the bottom or the clamp. Hope this helps.
