About the Three-Ways Series:
Some people like their chicken wings sweet while others prefer them scorching hot; either way, you are eating chicken. Magic the Gathering is a game with many different rules and building a Commander deck that works takes some time and strategy. Understanding the commander of your deck will help inform a deck-building plan that works for you. In this series, Joel discusses different ways to build different Commander decks. This broad-strokes approach will give you a basic breakdown of the commander and three different ways you can build your deck to work with its abilities, without providing a full deck-tech.
What is Commander:
Commander, officially recognized on June 17, 2011, originated from a format called EDH (Elder Dragon Highlander-- there can only be one). The first time we played EDH was around 2009. It is easily the best way to play Magic: The Gathering. The idea was to have a casual format with 100 cards and only a single copy of any one card, with a General: a singular Legendary Creature card in its own zone that can be cast any time, once you have the mana for it. If your general is removed, it goes up by a casting cost of 2 for each time it is removed. Once WOTC officially recognized the format and printed the first Commander product, your General was instead called your Commander and instead of the format being called EDH, it instead became recognized as Commander. If you ever hear anyone say EDH, they are talking about Commander. Make sure to know the cards that are banned in the format before building your deck (listed below).

Composite Golem is an absolute underrated house in this deck. Any Zirda or Training Grounds effect can make infinite mana with Kenrith and the Golem. You can then draw out the rest of the table. Even without, it generates infinite ETB / LTB triggers to use with Altar of the Brood and or Impact Tremors.
Another way for infinite mana is a sac outlet and enough artifacts / enchantments around the table for Dockside Extortionist with an ability cost reducer for best effect.
Deafening Silence, Kenrith, Seedborn Muse and Glen Elendra Archmage is an absolute lock on noncreature spells. And Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir locks out responses.
And hey, considering the number of creatures, why *not* run Triumph of the Hordes to smash your opponents out of nowhere?

This is EXACTLY the video I’ve been looking for. I’m working on a Kenrith Knight Tribal atm, with Training Grounds, Zirda, Biomancer’s Familiar, and Heartstone in there (I’m running the four just in case Training Grounds or another gets removed) plus a few tutors so I can get those out quickly and reliably. I’ll probably build two other decks out of him based on this video and switch out depending on what I feel like playing. He’s easily my favorite commander right now. I think building Kenrith with a heavy discard/sacrifice mechanic plus Training Grounds and Biomancer’s Familiar would be fun. Discard strong creatures or sac them to pull of strong card effects, then cast them back for one black

Same. I love Kenrith too but all Kenrith decklists are cEDH infinite combo or politics (And I don't like both of them) but the legends theme is very powerful and fun. I will be building it. Thanks for the video man!

I’m currently building Ken with activated abilities in mind trying to focus on ones with good etb effects or blanket effects. Like urza, Bonder, and golos. It’s very tempting to just use my food chain and break it but I wanna have fun activating every turn with seedborn muse.

I've been running an adventure version that uses castles, basic lands and has 80% success on getting all 5 colors within 5 turns.

This deck is Fun and relatively easy to build, my version has the basic lands blinged out and im working on all foil showcase versions of the adventure cards.
Estimated build cost is 150$
Completed build worth is around 500$ (Bling and best versions of all cards is around 750$ worth)
It is easy to alter deck plan as long as the color packets are maintained, (if i remove a black card it should be replaced by equivalent black card etc.)
The artifact/multicolor packet is easiest to alter and ive been using Hexproof/ shroud artifacts to help my commander or key creatures.
Also cards with double mana pip do have a harder time to cast so some spells are questionable mainly because of this and Reaper of Midnight often undermines Robber of the Rich.
Overall this deck concept is functional and a bit janky but is playable and has a decent win rate. It's a beautiful deck in paper and I tried very hard to keep it within an eldraine theme however most eldraine artifacts are cost/cast prohibitive and using a King for my commander I felt he would have quested and collected a decent amount of artifacts so that aspect of the deck has allowances for variance.😁

I also hope the mana base/color packet concept is helpful for newer players on a budget to brew 5 color decks, playtest to check consistency and trial run without fetch or shock lands unless they somehow miraculously get affordable. 25$ and up for a card is ridiculously prohibitive. Even i scream every time i see brazen borrower foil showcase cost- it will likely be a card i will have to deal without- and it is a gorgeous card. Luckily i was able to pull just a single showcase frame version😮 so not entirely painful. I dont even want to know what Priz Vista foil price is lol- out of my price range i bet. Fabled Passage as well and the ELD Leg Artifacts. Lord knows I want a Foil Ex Art Embercleave and Great Henge- may the boosters be ever in our favor!
