your hair is kinda similar with Mariah in this performance! loves it! i didn't realize how Mariah really has the swiftest runs until you point them out.

Mariah mastered the melismatic singing style. The number of notes in ever bar she insane. Also, she naturally has a very agile voice, so her riffs and runs are very quick. You have to listen to her catalog over and over and you pick up on something different every time.
I also recommend listening to her studio stems/ a capellas available here on CZcams. Like for ...emotions, Can't let go, Joy to the world, any time you need a friend, one sweet day, so on and so forth.
Her runs are so effortless and nicely done every time ☺️🙌 And I love that people are pointing out the hair haha, I didn’t realize until I read the comments.

Sheree Price on tambourine. She, her sister Kelly Price, and Melonie Daniels are the three women in black in front of the choir. They were Mariah’s main background divas during the early part of her career. They’re also in the 1960s inspired video of “All I Want For Christmas Is You”.

Mariah writes all of her songs, except the Covers, according to her. And I believe that because she talks about how she wrote and produced some of her songs in some of her interviews. She told once that she plays piano, but really bad. However, it was enough to make Vision Of Love and All I Want For Christmas Is You.
Idk if the sound of the audience was lowered cz I didn't hear much cheer after this UNBELIEVABLE performance... If it was nowadays then people will die for screaming how much good it was
The performances get dubbed to lower the audience and other noises and bring out hers and others sound to where it should be.

I've heard this was a benefit concert so a lot of the audience was supposedly businesspeople and professional types.

Mariah looks likes she’s having so much fun and is truly in her element here! It starts out so tenderly and then at the end she’s just…other worldly! You’re so right that typically these classic songs don’t go over as well with a lot of improvisation but Mariah is the exception to this rule lol Great reaction video!

Mariah is a religious person, she definitely cares about the religious aspect of this performance because of her faith, it's just a beautiful modern Gospel version of a Christmas classic, and she more than did it justice.
Yeah, we don't disagree here, I love what she's done with it. I feel that’s pretty clear given all the praise I give her in this video. And I said I don't care about it being religious, because some people will get offended by religious content even though I don’t, but that's not what we focus on on this channel. I didn’t say *she* doesn’t care.

In vocal classical music runs are called Ornamentations/Decorations/or in bel canto it's called Coloratura. Mariah Carey displays these techniques in a pop/gospel style. Very nice job and nice review. Happy Holidays!
Yes, you can definitely use both "ornamentations" or "coloratura". Generally they're used more when talking about the musical aspects of the piece/arrangement, and we often use the word "melisma" to describe the vocal technique itself. But "runs" work too and I prefer to use that word in my videos as everyone will understand what I mean, and as I usually react to pop productions and not classical music :). Love Mariah; her control is supernatural. Her vocal gymnastics are epic. One criticism: too many runs for my taste. She sounds so great but would be better (IMO) if she stayed on the phrase longer without melismatic runs every other bar.
Regardless of stylistic choices, her voice, ability and stamina is spectacular. 🎄✨🎁💝
That's what makes mariah MARIAH she doesn't wanna follow how people usually sang this song she made it her own if she stayed on the phrase longer she will be the same as people who have been singing this song before her that's why she change it.. i didn't know this song was a cover at first i thought she is yhe original...see that's why i love mariah she made it her own and doesn't follow other people version phrase longer thing would be boring for her and sound plain...
But that's what makes Mariah, Mariah.
She mastered the melismatic singing style and it has been her thing since day one. The number of notes in one bar is insane...and of course, the number of riffs, runs and transitions throughout an entire song (any MC song) is also asinine. What surprises me is that no matter how excessive, it doesn't come off annoying in any way - always pleasant. You don't even notice unless you're studying the vocal arrangements.
Beyonce for example, in her DC days and early career would do runs excessivelyyyy to the point you would lowkey lose track of the melody or essence of the song. Thank God she moved away from that.
P.s. I love Beyoncé. I'm just giving an opinion. Ik her hive are psychos - can't give an opinion without them losing their sh**.

Every run that comes from her mouth has a musical purpose and that's what makes Mariah sounds only like herself.
Often imitated but nobody Match her Musicality and tone (IMO).
She really is spectacular! :) I appreciate your input and think it's great that you have your own taste and opinion on the musical and stylistic choices made. And I like that you praise the talent and skill, regardless of your taste, and you don't just write it off as "bad". Personally, I'm a huge sucker for riffs and runs, especially when the singer has a good ear like Mariah and they show musicality as well as agility and control of their instrument. So to me, when it comes to Mariah it's a "more is more" situation :D haha.
