I could not having made this video without the help of Quasar. Most of the designs, particularly in the advanced section, came from him, as did the details on the technical side of hoiks. He is the reason this video has more depth than the wiki page on hoiks, which is severely lacking. Quasar has a written guide on google drive with some hoik explanations, which may provide more detail than what was in this video. drive.google.com/drive/folder...
ZeroGravitas, the person who originally discovered and coined the term "hoik," has an old video on item hoiks that I got my info on them from. You can find that here: • Item Hoiks! - Move & S... . I am not aware of any improvements in item hoiking aside from conveyor belts allowing size 1 items to be hoiked in more than just rightward ceiling hoiks.
The forum thread on heart statue optimization can be found here forums.terraria.org/index.php...

dude this video is insanely comprehensive. have a visual example lined up for every word you say is so nice. thank you
Finally someone made a video with all the information and now people don't have to search for it in small pieces like before, great job, thank you.
Thanks! That was one of the main things that made me want to make this video, hoik information is scattered and poorly explained. The wiki page is very scant with details and a lot of the guides are years and years old.
@@sorbetcafe can we use hoiks to stop flying enemies in old one's army. Because we can stop land enemies

Incredible work sorbet !
Seeing all those discoveries and design I've worked on displayed in such an easy to understand manner fills me with so much joy, and it is something I definetly woudn't been able to do.
Thanks again for making hoiks accessible to everyone, as they should be.
Thank you for working on such designs!
Do I have any need to watch this?
No
Do I still feel like I need to watch this?
Yes
Damn, even as someone who has been playing this game since the early days, I didn't realize hoiks had this much tech behind em. Seriously impressive work, well done!
This is absolutely something that needed to exist, the old guides never quite clicked for me but so far these explanations make a lot of sense and I already feel like I'd have better luck trying to build anything that is slightly more complicated than a unidirectional hoik.
Rain world + Terraria is something I didn’t know I needed until now. Amazing vid, I’ve never understood this much and will definitely use some of this in my future playthroughs.
7:51 I DID NOT EXPECT RAIN WORLD IN HERE Now I love this video 500% more, thank you for the information!!!
I've heard that Terraria isn't the only game with bugs that allow hoiks! Even 3D games that use "Constructive solid geometry" for terrain deformation, like Deep Rock Galactic.
yea there are some, i used to play hypixel skyblock and there's a term called stonking or ghostpicking used to pass through walls and stuff.
not the same mechanics as hoik but purpose is same.
Excellent tutorial! Very comprehensive and very well presented. But there are a few extra things I should mention:
1. By placing platforms with smart cursor you can get stairs, which can let you attack and move through blocks. This is a lot faster than hammering platforms for walls 3 or more tiles high. You can also swap the stairs for solid blocks, making hammerless hoiks. I used this method to perform Ethyriel's coin door desync method in a skyblock world without wood.
2. At 29:33 The "visual headache" can be avoided by building the invincibility machine near the top or bottom of the world, since the camera won't move there.
And this is why Team Cherry decided not to use slopes at all in Hollow Knight.
Amazing video, this was enlightening!
This is actually really cool. I knew the basics on hoiking, but I learned a lot from the sections on subtile positioning (and how it affects hoiking), hoik collision handling exceptions (hoiks can behave differently depending on player position and hoik configuration), and half-blocks (which, from what I can tell is highly related to subtile positioning). Honestly, this has to be one of the best hoik guides I have ever seen.
I don't know how else to explain this, but with no information beside the timbre of your voice and your speech pattern, I could tell you have an incomprehensible amount of Terraria knowledge
Thumbs up from Quasar means you nailed it! Color coding and block choice were so important to this video to make it so easy to follow.
Never before has finishing one video left me feeling this much like an engineer. Thank you very kindly. Your comprehensive guides bring me joy.
Dude is better than my high school physics teacher. He always said "this is a simplified version, better explanation will be given by your university professor", while you said "this is a simplified version, better explanation will be given in 35:51".
Not even an hour and you've explained more on hoiks than I have seen anywhere. This isn't just impressive, this is absolutely incredible (at least, to me, lol)
Great guide dude, I am definitely gonna try some of the stuff I've seen here!
29:00 to not have the screen move i think it might work if you put the machine near the top or bottom of the world as you don't scroll the screen until you get in the middle of the screen so you have half a screen to make it work
i didnt need this tutorial, i wasn't searching for it, but anyway i still learned how they work and how to use them and for what purpose
absolute 10/10 video. i love the fact that you gave the viewer the option to have base-level, functional knowledge or legitimate fundamental knowledge about why these things occur. the educational methods you use are incredibly well suited for this kind of thing. great work.
Woah you and Quasar are legends for this. Really awesome video! Hopefully lots of people are inspired to join the hoik/ wiring community!!
came here for hoiking into the golem chamber, walked out with a phd in hoik mechanics! (Great video!)
Great tutorial. I love that you accualy try to be scientific and very precise while describing a game feature. Good job in my opinion.
it's so cool how this glitch was discovered by the community.
Thank you for exposing it to so many more people in such a well thought out and easy to grasp way!!!👍
Tnx, great video, i remember following another hoiks guide years ago, but yiu go way more into depth in this video. Looking forwards to trying some of these out!
I’ve clocked about 3,200 hours since 2015 in this game. I don’t know why I clicked on this, but this is by far the *best, most comprehensive* guide I’ve _ever_ seen on any game, ever. Very well done, sir!
This is probably the coolest terraria video on a mechanic that I didn't know was so amazing. I'm using this for the dungeon guardian right now. Thank you for being awesome!
SUCH AN INFORMATIVE VIDEO IT REALLY HAS EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW. THANKS VERY MUCH
Glad to see someone making a full, proper guide. I'll be coming back to this one; I prefer hoiks to teleporters in my builds most of the time.
“Lawnmower only”?? Okay yeah, this guy deserves my sub
Exceptional work, thank you for all nuanced info!
Theres just so much you can do in this game. As someone whose boss fighting areas consist of some platforms and a teleporter at best, these elaborate stages and using of the mechanics are so impressive.
The colour coding is very thoughtful, this will be very useful
Mostly, I'm not going to use this information, but you are an excellent teacher, and i respect that. Have a good day
Great video, 5 minutes in and i feel like i've learned more about hoiks than I have since they were first discovered.
I didn't know someone could make a 50 minute long video talking about and explaining hoiks. An amazing introduction to hoiks🎉🎉🎉
this is absolutely incredible, good job dude.
This is one hell of a guide on scary triangles alright, great video!
With this knowledge, I finally have a chance to reasonably beat a modded hardcore run finally. Much appreciated!
Thank you so much for this guide. You’re the best!
absolute BANGER of a video!! GREAT STUFF
thank you so much for your effort. this a great guide to reference!
Found an underrated channel. Going to share it with everyone I know.
high quality content as always, the cafe will be eating good today, hopefully I will use this information 👍
Honestly the best unintentional feature in the game. Also, this video is really useful. Thanks for that.
THANK YOU, from the bottom of my heart, for making this
edit: saw rain world, subscribed
In theory, you can reduce the screen movement of the invincibility machine by building it either at the top or bottom of the world. The screen lock occurs based on the screen range, so zooming out fully results in the screen locking in a larger range. Not sure if it would reduce it completely but it would reduce it mostly.
Prob better at the bottom of the world since space lowers gravity
@@storm_fling1062 i'm not sure lowered gravity would interfere with hoiks though. And the bottom would be a pain since you'd have to clear out so much lava.
@@oscarlove4394 it would disable the fall damage
Thanks you for the incredible video mate!
Barely two minutes in and I already know I can and should add five block tall hoiks to my NPC houses to allow mounts through. Nice stuff.
i just love the running gag of showing "sloped blocks move things toward the hypotenuse" in different ways
very neat, i just started playing a while ago, i like seeing all of the wacky stuff you can do in this game :3
Slopes are fun. From Hoiks to Backwards Long Jumps to demo derby ramps, a ramp is a wonderful machine.
Thank you, I couldn't figure out why they didn't work, now I do.
Amazingly well made video!
Me who has never and will never use any of this : Interesting.
(Incredible guide though! Super clear and well put together.)
oh yeah 47 minute guide to interestingly bugged triangles my favorite
This is *amazing*. I've been playing terraria for years now, thanks so much for putting so much work into this video for us!
There was this one golfing map I remember playing, I think it was Puttraria by Khaios if I recall correctly, and there is an invisible hoik made out of echo blocks / echo coating on the map. Sure, a teleporter would've had the same end goal, but the *way* they got you into the next course using a hoik is thematic for the hole.
Being vague so people can get the map for themselves and stumble upon it without many spoilers about it.
I've not played Terraria in months
I just stumbled on this video and watched its' entirety
Good shit 👍
technical terraria never ceases to amaze me
this is essentially just mario pipes but with extra steps
Wow, today i was looking for a video that explained hoinks, i look again after some hours, and i see this, thanks
I’ve played over 300 hours of terraria and not only did I not know that “hoiks” were a thing, but I didn’t know they had so much useful tech associated with them! I gotta start using these!
Sweet Jesus this is a big video! I don’t think I’ll be able to apply most of this but it’s still super interesting!
Also at 29:30, if you are a summoner you should be able to shoot a golf ball to freeze the camera while summons attack the boss for you, but I haven’t golfed in a while so that could be weong
I wanted to subscribe because i was amazed how good you explain everything, but i found out i already subbed to you after watching some dancepad video 💀😹
The duality of man
I didn't understand most of this, but did still learn a lot from this
dude the updated invincibility machine actually works thanks
the comprehensive guide to an incomprehensible "feature"
A bug turned feature
Great video. Simple as.
This is soooo helpful. Literal saviour :DD
i don't understand a single thing
but very informational video👍
Didn't expect to see rivulet gameplay in this video, I literally started the campaign yesterday. Oh yeah, cool game mechanic (or bug?) btw.
PSA You dont regen band to regen 3 hp/s in the fall-damage invincibility machine; save those valuable accessory slots! Drinking health potions allows us to generate health, since when we are invincible we dont have to worry about saving our potions for tanking large hits. Campfires, heart lanterns, and honey add 0.5, 1 and 1 hp/s respectively meaning we can reach 2.5 hp/s passively. Lesser health potions generate about 0.8 health per second, bringing us up above 3hp/s with a wide margin to be slow about potion usage. Heart statues work too if afk-ing (~2hp/s best case single statue). TL;DR drinking lesser health potions generates HP a just under what a regen band does, but thats enough to free up a valuable accessory slot.
This felt about as difficult to understand as a college lecture. Good thing I'm not getting graded on hoiks
accidentally fell asleep with this video on and had the best sleep of my life
Thank you for this
Great video! also the url is all uppercase and has only one number, which is very lucky
The Glory of Math and Triangles!
Love the tutorial, I only knew of the invalid blocks, Jesus is this deep.
Oh I'm gonna have so much fun with this
Actually that is incredible, I'm sad I saw after moonlord has been defeated 😶
Really that is incredible work on hoiks.. thanks a lot bro
The Hypotenuse will show you the way
this reads like a college course and i really appreciate it.
Gah! Rainworld spoiler flashbang! (Not really a very bad one but a warning might be nice :p. Really cool video tho, I do quite appreciate the reference!)
I love hoiking into the jungle temple in prehardmode to loot everything and light it up
Best Hoik guide on youtube
My general implementation of hoiks, is using them to expel teleported enemies from the teleporter's active zone fast enough to be able to have the enemies teleporting from the spawn zone at quarter second intervals, and still clear that active zone. It means i run bloodmoon and most things die in under a second from their spawn, since each side usually has 3 teleporter zones, and the 3/4 of a second to cycle, the they get thrown into an instadeath killzone. Nice. :P
You mentioned the time spent walking, apparently your design for the rod of discord farm eliminates this. It doesn't, it does massively reduce it and is quite efficient but the above method using the teleporters as well actually does eliminate the walk delay. Of course, it does require wiring, and not a simple lot. Mine uses logic and this can be replicated in prehardmode with chained timers, but it's even more complex wiring then. Either way the example was a fun one for it's ease of creation.
I'm familiar with setups like that and considered doing something similar, the black recluse lucky coin farm had a dummy engine-powered teleporter setup that hoiked enemies into a box, but I didn't want to add extra wiring for a non-major impact. You could definitely improve on the farm in a few ways, like I said in the video.
@@sorbetcafe yep, many ways for improvement, my main point tho was the hoiks shine when used as a mix with other things. I've even gone so far as using hoiks mixed with minecarts. :P
This is
So much information
Started playing terraria a couple weeks ago. Got this in my recommendations. Now I have a one way hoik to hell. Good video!
Hoik order of operations, oh my days.
Ty bro
Very nice guide, maybe pink/ frozen slime block mechanics and applications next?
I had a friend in elementary school who cannot pronounce r's like you. You remind me of him. 💀
47 minutes? damn hopefully there is some juicy new info i dont know here
I certainly hope so, Quasar and I came up with some of these designs just this past week lol
@@sorbetcafe there was certainly quite a few things i didn't know before that i learned from this, thanks for the great content as always
really fun thing to do: make a smallish hoik loop maybe 6 or 7 hammered blocks on each side. Then, spawn a drone with FPV goggles equipped and fly it around.
Yay, I'll probably never use them but now I know how.
Now I will be a hoik god in pvp thanks!
underrated as hell
29:40 wouldent being in outer space work for stoping the screen movment?
When near the height limit the screen stops following the players y position to stop the screen from showing out of bounds so wouldent that effectively stop the visual headach
