Sobel jumped into Normandy on D-day, assembled an ad-hoc group of troopers and took out a German MG nest for which he earned the Bronze Star. BoB completely leaves this out in order to tell the story. It seems to be popular to slag him off, but the man served his country, retired as a Lt Colonel and had a horrible end to his life in 1987. Thank you for your Service Lt. Colonel Sobel.

Agreed! As much of a hard line Sobel drew based on the accounts of those who were there, they also credited him for their survival throughout the war. The level of discipline he drilled into Easy company clearly paid off in spades🫡

yes there are several mistakes with this "breakdown" this being one of them, the objective was simply to be on time, reading a map and deploying to cover the crossroad. if the old man was the objective the 1st platoon would have stopped and grabbed him, or the second platoon, or the third lol, they all just ran into position including winters after the joke from the old man. second one was "I have a compass" wasn't a password, he had a compass and they figured out where they would be jumping "yup its Normandy every time" i stopped there.

He said “I had a compass” because he used the calculations of time and direction to determine their drop zone would be in Normandy. At that time it was classified. The next scene cuts to it being revealed at the regimental and then battalion and company level what their mission was.

Still my favorite was near the end when they freed the inmates of the concentration camp. It showed how inhumane that human beings can be, and the Americans reaction to it. Now we see similar things happening today with renewed anti-semitism and ignorance of history.

Band of brothers is so damn good and it's what got me into world war two as a teenager in Ireland. I'll never forget this first episode being aired on TV, it actually captivated me and I seen Ross from Friends and thought it was going to be a comedy or something. After 10 minutes Ross from friends was gone! I seen Captain Sobel, his performance was magnificent. Made the rest of the men likeable because Sobel was so unlikeable which worked perfectly. By the end I was totally convinced that I was witnessing the greatest show ever made.

The first time I watched BoB I took the normal view of Sobel. Upon a rewatch I found myself admiring the work he did. Sobel knew he was hated and wanted to be hated. This gave the men a motivation and a common enemy. He also knew not to let them celebrate until there was a real reason to celebrate. When he was promoted for their success, he couldn't share this with them because the job wasn't over, so he went immediately into an inspection to make them hate his success. Even with Winters" promotion he downplayed it like it was forced and not really earned and he still had to prove it. Sobel was failed in his training that he was never fully developed as a field leader. Why were his shortcomings never addressed and corrected?
Sobel was hurt by being fired as CO. He seemed to have a good grasp on human trauma phycology and bringing men together and how to do so but was unable to read people to determine if they ever really understood he wasn't really their enemy but was doing it for them. Most of the men years later did come to this conclusion and credit Sobel for making them the best.

7:15, 8:05, 9:07, 9:49 angrily aware of his own tactical blunders in comparison to Winters' emerging prowess, Sobel sensed Winters could overtake his leadership in combat and formed a plot to discredit him. He issued Winters an Article 15 for not inspecting the latrine, because Sobel had changed the time from 10.00 hours to 09.45, though Winters wasn't informed of this change. Richard was given a choice - denial of a weekend pass for 2 months, or challenge the charge via court-martial.
*Winters, immediately recognizing Sobel's motives and how the imposition of nonjudicial punishment would keep him from the Normandy jump, trumped Sobel with a written demand for a court-martial instead, which would keep both him and Sobel from the jump for the proceedings. And yet they totally ignored it. The when the sargents all offerred to turn in their stripes rather than go into combat with Sobel, the Colonel demoted only one, and threw another one out of the unit. The rest he just told to get out. What was so special about the first two? Why did he do that? It's hard to tell how Sobel would have been in combat since he wasn't in charge of combat troops after leaving Easy Company. However, at least Wikipedia says this, he jumped on D-Day, gathered four men, and lead them to take out a machine gun nest with grenades. His job, after training those doctors, medics, etc. at Chilton, was as a regiment staff officer, eventually becoming regiment S-4 (logistics). Generally moving to staff was considered a promotion, especially in a job as important as supply.
Also, it should be pointed out that most of Ambroses information about Sobel came from Winters, who pretty clearly did not like Sobel. Of course, Sobel's job was not to be liked, it was to train his company.

That scene about signing your life insurance right before the jump is so far off base it hurts to watch it. That stuff is taken care of way before that, it's actually inprocessing paperwork. I know the point they were trying to make but they should have done it another way. As far as Sobel, he deserves way more credit than he got. Maybe a bad leader, who knows for sure, but maybe the best trainer I have ever heard of, for that time.

I think that David Schwimmer deserves great credit for his portrayal of Sobel.. It's great when an actor gets to portray a hero, and perhaps even greater when they can play a throughly villianous character, but Sobel was neither. (He was a bit of a screw-up, really...) Schwimmer really captured who he was, not necessarily a 'bad guy' but just not a hero or indeed a villian. (Shwimmer had to but his 'actor's ego' in his back pocket to play that part...) respect. xx SF
