    50 Volts, 3 Amps! That coil is going to get very hot very quickly!

    • @kopazwashere
      @kopazwashere Před rokem +79

      luckily it is more or less instantaneous so with right gauge wiring it might not heat up that much. but i guess this depends on rate of fire (% on time of the coil)

    • @Speeder84XL
      @Speeder84XL Před rokem +43

      It shows just 14 V on the display though. That's still 40 W of heat (pretty much for a coil that size). But since it only need to be turned on a brief moment during a shot, that will not be an issue even at 150 W (50 V, 3 A) of heat (it will still need several seconds to get a significant temperature rise)

    • @BrianG61UK
      @BrianG61UK Před rokem +17

      @@Speeder84XL I guess I misheard 15 as 50. Which does explain why there was no visible smoke.

    • @Speeder84XL
      @Speeder84XL Před rokem +14

      @@BrianG61UK Yes, but he does write "50 V DC to it" as text as well, at 0:22 in the clip. Which is a bit confusing, as the display on his power supply shows 14.
      Yes - during the demonstration when the steel bar gets "stuck", he runs it for quite a bit of time as well (much longer than what's needed for a shot).
      So at 150 W, it would at least get hot enough for him not being able to hold it with his hands, maybe even start melting the plastic tube in the middle, haha

    • @Speeder84XL
      @Speeder84XL Před rokem +2

      @@BrianG61UK Another interesting point, is that if it does heat up significantly, we would either see the current decreasing over time or the voltage rising (depending on if he run the supply in constant voltage or constant current mode) - as copper changes it's resistance quite a bit with the temperature.
      We even see that now as he apparently run the supply at constant voltage 14 V and the current does decrease slightly from from 2.863 to 2.845 (indicating a slight temperature rise in the coil)
      - but it would it would be much more at 150 W.

      I don't think they are used to accelerate the particles. Particles are accelerated by 2 Ds (the part of the instrument is called D I forgot what the instrument is called) that are basically two "D" shaped objects(or two semicircular objects placed adjacent to each other that use alternating current to accelerate the particles. I think the big long ring is used to position the particles to crash into each other. Or maybe they accelerate the particles as well. I am not sure. But I am sure about the "Ds"

    • @HalcyonVoid
      @HalcyonVoid Před měsícem +1

      @KingCreeper85 no, thry are fundamentally different methods of magnetic acceleration.
      Coil/guass uses wire coils which produce a melagnetic field when charged, this is set up to pull/push a projectile in sequence up to speed. No physical contact with the barrel.
      A rail gun uses 2 conductive rails. The projectile is also conductive and completes the circuit across the rails. You then charge up capacitors to extreme voltages. When you release that energy via the circuit it will cause the projectile to be pushed down the rails until it is launched from the barrel.

    Coil guns currently have a speed limit because the magnetic field doesn't dampen quick enough
    There is a suspension system that uses magnets to thicken suspension fluid to go from soft to hard suspension suddenly, It had the same problem and they solved it by having counter rotating magnetic fields four to be exact.
    This could potentially fix that limit and make high velocity coil guns

      there will always be résistance no matter what material you use, you can never be 100% efficient
      more current = more wasted power = more heat

      Given the figure of 50V and 3A (=150W), the coil is going to get very warm, very fast.

    Never call a coil gun a rail gun; the two things are entirely different.

    if you add more in series, you get diminishing returns. a gauss gun is a thing, limited by poor power storage.
