50 Volts, 3 Amps! That coil is going to get very hot very quickly!
luckily it is more or less instantaneous so with right gauge wiring it might not heat up that much. but i guess this depends on rate of fire (% on time of the coil)
It shows just 14 V on the display though. That's still 40 W of heat (pretty much for a coil that size). But since it only need to be turned on a brief moment during a shot, that will not be an issue even at 150 W (50 V, 3 A) of heat (it will still need several seconds to get a significant temperature rise)
@@Speeder84XL I guess I misheard 15 as 50. Which does explain why there was no visible smoke.
@@BrianG61UK Yes, but he does write "50 V DC to it" as text as well, at 0:22 in the clip. Which is a bit confusing, as the display on his power supply shows 14.
Yes - during the demonstration when the steel bar gets "stuck", he runs it for quite a bit of time as well (much longer than what's needed for a shot).
So at 150 W, it would at least get hot enough for him not being able to hold it with his hands, maybe even start melting the plastic tube in the middle, haha
@@BrianG61UK Another interesting point, is that if it does heat up significantly, we would either see the current decreasing over time or the voltage rising (depending on if he run the supply in constant voltage or constant current mode) - as copper changes it's resistance quite a bit with the temperature.
We even see that now as he apparently run the supply at constant voltage 14 V and the current does decrease slightly from from 2.863 to 2.845 (indicating a slight temperature rise in the coil)
- but it would it would be much more at 150 W.
Make a loop of coils and you get a small hadron collider XD
but with iron bolts instead of hadrons colliding. So its a bolt collider
I don't think they are used to accelerate the particles. Particles are accelerated by 2 Ds (the part of the instrument is called D I forgot what the instrument is called) that are basically two "D" shaped objects(or two semicircular objects placed adjacent to each other that use alternating current to accelerate the particles. I think the big long ring is used to position the particles to crash into each other. Or maybe they accelerate the particles as well. I am not sure. But I am sure about the "Ds"
There's no greater technology than a massive hardon collider. Just think of the incredible new inventions we could erect. Just the thought of how many world changing applications are possible is discumbobulating. Deciding whether or not to use them for peaceful or military purposes is more than just a sementic question.
@kirito they do use magnets but they are very very power full, so mutch they need to be cool by liquid helium
What are hadrons?
What rare breed is this??
A youtube Short that I enjoied to watch?
That's definitely a first.
Exactly. No time wasted.
Exactly, no nonsense.
I don’t think rare breed makes this, they haven’t delved into coil guns quite yet.
@@Z3NITH_ sure, coil guns are power hungry and don't look to be viable at the moment. But have you heard about rail guns? They are pretty much same thing, but way too bigger, and those already exist.
@@GD-mw1kd i was making a joke about the company rare breed, they make triggers
I love how he failed to mention that this isn't bare wire. How many people wrapped naked wire around pvc and couldn't make a coil?
The wire is actually magnet wire that has a thin layer of insulation so that the coils can't touch each other.
I kinda thought of how is bare wire able to make that strong of an electromagnet instead of showing a insulated wire
yeah. enamel coated wire is used for electromagnets, since bare copper will just short.
Lacquer covered wire the same as if you would be winding a transformer.
The Boy Mechanic: 200 Classic Things to Build Hardcover - March 28, 2006
Eg: Transformer coil
Now take a serious lenght of pvc, several seperate coils with relays, charge them at the right time...bolt goes beyond horizon..now that would make a real coil/railgun...
How about reversing the polarity of the electyromagnet at the right time, expelling the projectile while it has some lenz magnetic charge? Has anyone done any real world testing with this?
@@alexandergrimsmo More power!! GRRRR 🤪
yes
would require the projectile to be magnetic and not just a normal bar of steel@@alexandergrimsmo
@@alexandergrimsmo Don't forget back-EMF will prevent the coil's field from reversing polarity instantaneously.
The field in the first polarity direction would have to collapse, then the field in the opposite polarity would have to form.
I did this for a collage project. Instead of figuring out when to turn it off, I just connected it to a huge capacitor and it worked fine. Just that it would take some time to charge.

When your power supply is current limited at 3 amps
😂😂😂😂
So that's why I see the voltage drop when it is loaded. And that's why the wattage showed is the product of the new voltage and current
Why is it limited? How can he increase the amperage?

Great video great Scott 👏
Its kinda funny how many people confuse coil gun for rail gun. Speaking of which... make a rail gun next.
Basically the only difference between the two is the shape of the magnets propelling the rod right?
@KingCreeper85 no, thry are fundamentally different methods of magnetic acceleration.
Coil/guass uses wire coils which produce a melagnetic field when charged, this is set up to pull/push a projectile in sequence up to speed. No physical contact with the barrel.
A rail gun uses 2 conductive rails. The projectile is also conductive and completes the circuit across the rails. You then charge up capacitors to extreme voltages. When you release that energy via the circuit it will cause the projectile to be pushed down the rails until it is launched from the barrel.
bro used the phantom forces coil gun icon no way
Oh yes a PF player
There recently was a story where a guy turned into a coil gun because he thought an unmentionable up his butt was non-metal and he went into an MRI. Not sure if it's a true story but that too was an application of this principle. A weird one for sure.
He had a buttplugg that said it was made of silicone but had metal in it

Ding dong!
(Old school doorbell-tech reference.)
A normaly closed reed switch in the middle of coil would make this work quite easy.
Now i can make my self home-made electric bullet gun
Coil guns currently have a speed limit because the magnetic field doesn't dampen quick enough
There is a suspension system that uses magnets to thicken suspension fluid to go from soft to hard suspension suddenly, It had the same problem and they solved it by having counter rotating magnetic fields four to be exact.
This could potentially fix that limit and make high velocity coil guns
The suspension solution sounds very cool and interesting...
I’m confused on how the suspension system works or what exactly that is/does

It is insulated wire

Magnet shoot as crazy but happily struck wooden case of old TV leaving good dent "only"
It has to be coated wire. Otherwise the windings will short against each other and the electricity will take the path of least resistance. Which is the opposite of what you want to make this experiment work. If you try this make sure you use magnet wire.
"Then cueent will phow phough it" OK bud.

Could you just trim off the rims to the copper wire and keep it wrapped up the way it is? With out having to unwind an rewined it?

Never call a coil gun a rail gun; the two things are entirely different.
if you add more in series, you get diminishing returns. a gauss gun is a thing, limited by poor power storage.
just use photo resistance..make in every part of coil
