Originating from the country of the Holy Kaveri, Tiruttalaiyur was home to Pasupati. He was born into a Brahmin family of great distinction who were committed to studying Veda, and he served the Lord with a heart full of love and sincerity. He sung the Krishna Yajur Veda's central passage, the Holy Rudram, in adoration of the Lord every day. Every day before the sun rose, he descended to a pool that was next to the holy river, where lotus blossoms would raise their heads when they saw the saint coming. He would submerge himself up to his neck in the water, and then, with his palms folded above his head, he would intone the Rudram in a loud, clear voice. He honored the Lord's lingam with fresh drona, lotus, and samyaka flowers, sensitive vilva leaves, and holy darbha grass after each recitation. Within three yojanas, bad spirits were freed by such devotion. At noon and at night, Pasupati continued his mantra, and eventually, he began to shine like Brahma. He was promised eight siddhis, but he was not in the slightest bit tempted by them and continued his recitations without wavering. With an abundance of grace, the Lord led him to the gates of Svargaloka and beyond, to his residence, Sivapuri. The saint gained worldwide recognition as "Rudra Pasupatiyār."
