    somthing worth mentioning about this ep. When Misato grabs Shinji's head at dinner, Its parallel to when the Angel grabs Eva-01's head during the the battle.

      ***** I want to say this to you, about this review. Basic stuff first and then more advanced. The concept of using flashbacks and past setup takes away from basic setting of the city of Tokyo and what is later New Tokyo from the ashes. The concept is meant to provide a sense of distortion but is flawed in that it takes away from the current scenario. Although avoiding a traditional setup, this is merely a glamorized technique to buy time, and is used in trilogies to provide mystery, but no promise of substance: thankfully this show has substance, but that is beside the point. References in the city of its economy, of nerve, and angels would have had the same effect if interrupted by the unnatural angel that would disrupt this atmosphere, had it would have been in episode 2. It does not make sense to provide inciting action before setup of an environment, and although this technique is rare that does not make it genius. As for the bases of emotion and physical conflict idea, well, it is redundant, as any good setting provides a base that sets atmosphere, and acts as a hub for events (Ex: Club room, haruhi suzumiya)-We all knew that Shinji had to survive the first episode.This takes away any tension from the battle itself, making it a simple fireworks display.-Learning what was at stake.Because we could not learn before, and it would not be more realistic to.Everything else is simply good basic writing with foreshadowing, and subtexting. I believe you have commented that you were a writer, so, you should know this. Your personal insight on the viewer "moving in" with the main characters is perhaps could only be unique in regards to providing information of the main character and the emotional base in the same episode, since we know nothing about him; the problem with this is that one crazy killer angel before or after emotional setup does not change any substance; mystery could have been acclimated to the setting either way.I believe a descent review mentions technique upon technique to reveal the uniqueness of the story; not redundancy upon technique or vice versa.

    one aspect I like about the angel fight is how the viewer feels like they lost consciousness with shinji and only recall the traumatic second half of the battle when there is nothing else to occupy his mind while he is supposed to be sleeping. it's a similarity I've noticed and thought the parallel was interesting.

  • @theminimanx
    @theminimanx Před 9 lety +161

    I'm really enjoying these Evangelion analyses. Most people who talk about Eva talk about it's characters and themes, so it's nice to see some discussion on the directing of the show.
    Another thing I really liked about this episode is that the sudden cut to the aftermath really adds to the confusion Shinji/the audience feels at this time. He's just been thrown into this immense conflict, and he hasn't really had time to process it all yet. This sense of wrongness established throughout the episode helps prevent the victory against the Angel from feeling heroic in the action movie sense *cough*Rebuild*cough*.

    • @kuribo04
      @kuribo04 Před 9 lety +2

      I don't understand the jab at Rebuild. The battles from 1.0 feel like the ones from the early episodes (sadly the unique thing from the first battle had to be cut because it wouldn't have worked in a film)

    • @theminimanx
      @theminimanx Před 9 lety +1

      kuribo04 Okay, maybe I'm being a bit unfair to the Rebuilds. Anyway, my point was that not cutting the battle in two makes it resemble your standard action movie climax. The hero is in an impossible situation - he pulls some bs trick out of nowhere - he proceeds to curb-stomp the enemy.

    • @kuribo04
      @kuribo04 Před 9 lety

      Theminimanx Yeah, it becomes something more traditional, but still, it's not Shinji doing all the fighting, so it's still...weird. What really bothered me is that the eye scene isn't there. :/

      Anything important to watch besides the main series? End of Evangelion?

    • @BlueScarabGuy
      @BlueScarabGuy Před 9 lety +2

      AlexanderRM1000 To fully experience the original Neon Genesis Evangelion, you MUST watch End of Evangelion. It's the official epilogue to the story. The original final 2 episodes are good in their own right, but they really only provide a conclusion to Shinji as a character, and not to the plot of the show itself (though the original main goal was technically met, it doesn't really feel conclusive unless you watch EoE).

    • @AlexanderRM1000
      @AlexanderRM1000 Před 9 lety

      BlueScarabGuy
      OK, thanks. No need to watch Rebuild, Death/Rebirth, any of those things? Thus far I'm honestly not that enthusiastic about Evangelion, so I'd just as soon wrap it up and not watch extra stuff.

    • @BlueScarabGuy
      @BlueScarabGuy Před 9 lety +2

      AlexanderRM1000 Death and Rebirth is an hour or so of nothing but compilation of the series, an intermission, and another half hour that is literally the first 30 minutes of End of Evangelion, so no, skip Death and Rebirth entirely, you'll probably watch EoE shortly after finishing the series anyway.
      As for Rebuilds, the first movie is literally the first 6-8 (can't remember the exact amount) episodes of the series squeezed into two hours, but the animation is drop-dead gorgeous and the voice acting in both English and Japanese is better. I personally think it's worth a watch, but it's not necessary, though honestly you could watch Rebuild 1.11 in place of those episodes if you wanted and didn't mind the animation difference.
      Rebuild 2.22 is really good, and has enough changes from the original version of those events (including a completely different ending and a brand-new character) to merit watching, though if you're only interested in the original continuity, you can skip it as well.
      3.33 is completely original and you won't understand it at all if you haven't seen 2.22. It's also still not out in the west/in English yet.

    Another nice touch is that how Misato grabbed Shinji in the apartment mimics exactly how the first Angel grabbed Unit 1's head in the battle.
    This subconsciously hints at the Angels' ancestral relation to mankind which will be revealed later in the show.

    You should've mentioned how scenes between Shinji and Misato in her apartment further laid down the foundation of its theme of communication - the disconnect between the two despite Misato's efforts, inner monologues on how to exactly behave, how she talks to Shinji without crossing the threshold of his room as he lies on his bed looking in the opposite direction (feigning sleep?). Good video, it's a great episode.

    Seeing the scene where Shinji and Misato play Rock Paper Scissors to decide who has to do chores made me realize how I'd assumed that was a Western game, but I just looked it up on a whim and imagine my surprise: it actually originated in China and Japan, and the version adopted in the West is directly based on the Japanese game jan-ken (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sansukumi-ken).

  • @tehawsumninja
    @tehawsumninja Před 9 lety +2

    This might have already been said by someone somewhere before, but I honestly feel that the second episode of Eva was basically a Kara no Kyoukai in my eyes. It placed event sequences out of order to get the audience interested in the ending/beginning of important events and also used said out of sequence events to give us a look into the lives of the characters.
    Sort of like how in the first Kara no Kyoukai movie, Overlooking view, when Shiki is eating ice cream or drinking water, she seems so normal, yet later we see her completely (basically) crazy and murderous. Eva does the same in this episode where we see Shinji and Misato do normal, human, and relatable things, but, as the series continues, we get to see them act inhuman, or illogical, and perhaps in ways we can not understand.
    In that respect, I honestly give a lot of credit to both of these series in portraying such contrast so well without it feeling like they are even trying to. It's natural and...comforting? to watch, and really shows how well a show can grip peoples attention by just changing a few things and putting thought in how a story should be told and in what order.

I was so confused as to how someone who had such a good taste and knew what he was talking about had a simple show about cute girls doing cute things at number one. Never could I say I was so wrong. I just finished watching it and it was absolutely incredible. Coming from someone who has watched a lot of moe I thought I knew what I was going to get when I said fuck it and watched it, but I got something completely different and you managed to sum up what's good about it perfectly, Thanks, I have a whole new level of respect for you now. Loving the Eva videos,can't wait for you to talk about one of the moments of introspection. I wouldn't call any of this mind blowing or genius, just really good. But the end of this episode is one of my favorite moments of the show (last 10 to 30 seconds) just because of how well directed it was. Not sure if I would recommend you to make one video for every episode. I would be happy by just seeing something from key episodes like episode 9 (the one with the musical sequence) or some of the later ones.

    when I watched eva, I remember having the same weird feeling I had when I read Watchmen. I could see it was incredible, and done VERY well, but the actual experience I had while consuming it was...pretty meh. Neither really left an impression on me, beyond the fact that I could tell there was INCREDIBLE talent and brilliance behind them.
    but the more I think about it, the more I re-read or re-watch, the more I listen to other critiques of them, the more blown away I am by them. And no matter how many times I revisit them, there's always SOMETHING i didn't notice that blows me away. it's like I have to learn to love these works. i come back to them because of their ideas and skill, to try to figure it out, and as I do, I really fall in love with them.
    Watchmen is now my all-time favorite book. yes, BOOK of any kind. But I am SO FRUSTRATED trying to figure out why the HELL I felt so 'meh' on the first go. is it just what happens when a story has been so carefully constructed? is it something about my own judgement of stories? is it something else, something I feel is missing from these masterpieces?
    I just don't get it. but I feel like that's my big "art goal" is to figure it out for myself. and people like you help me sort through it, while also helping me understand the madness of art!
    Brilliant analysis, I feel like I have to rewatch all your analysis vids on eva multiple times just so I can really digest your points. You do a great job communicating your perspective, and it's very well-thought out AND enjoyable to consume. apparently in my life, your channel is 'better' than fucking evangelion. BRAIN WHY??

Girls in shorts product placement, action etc. 3 the setting for this anime is in Japan 2015! Eventhough this anime came out two decades ago it holds up so well today in the actual year 2015. The cloths Misato wheres really are not too different from the cloths girls wear today. 4. Neon Genesis Evangelion is a wonderful, well crafted, thought provoking peice of art that I highly enjoy.

The scene where EVA 01 just rips apart the ripcage of the angel and then stabbing its core(?) with it leaves the audience a question, reinforced by the first episode. What are EVAs? Are they just robots portrayed by normal mecha anime or something much more? The question is then answered as you progress along the series, which can only be described as amazing storytelling and pacing.

    I found your point about the apartment being a home base really interesting, and it got me thinking about how other anime also have the same feeling, Naruto has the leaf village for example. I was however wondering if you think this type of setting was fundamental to a stories success, a counter point might be that Avatar never really had a home base, but rather they would travel around the world.

    Spoilers ahead:
    I think Rei is both Shinji's "Guardian Angel" (in a thematic context), as well as her soul being the soul of Lilith/Lilim/Humanity (in the context of the series). Her mental breakdown in the episode and targeting of the scientists is reminiscent of Percy Shelley's Frankenstein's monster targeting his creator for giving him life, and thus, suffering. I think you hit the nail on the head in this analysis when you say that the Eva pilot is having an existential crisis finding her raison d'etre, which I think is a recurring theme in the show. Rei, having no soul of her own is the doll for which Lilith's soul is reborn, much like how Kaworu is the doll for Adam - that's why there can only be one of her every time, because Lilith's soul will be reborn into her each time, despite retaining none of the memories. Her plight represents humanity's plight to find meaning and purpose in their existence, and it makes so much sense how the scene in her room solidifies the concept that Rei lives in a way that she does not care for herself (she doesn't take care of her living standards, gets by on bare necessities etc.) and lives entirely for Gendo - she loves him because he cares about her. It is quite possible that she is the only one that can see his goodness (apart from one other character... Yui... coincidence?). Of course, this is all just my opinion. It's quite possible that Rei has no soul - or that the existence of her soul is proof that a soul is forged through the trials of existence. Either way, I think it works, both thematically and story-wise and I think it speaks to the genius of Anno, being able to depict such concepts through such short and key frames.

Usually I feel like *Evangelion* is over analyzed but in this video you touched the one thing you find in all really great anime, world building as apposed to a "good" story. The relationship between character and setting should drive a story not the other way around.

    So you're probably scrolling through your inbox for the latest comments but what you DIDN'T know is that THIS person commenting wants a video on the Endless Eight and how each episode builds up to the amazing payoff in the final Endless Eight episode. You've been talking a lot about different individual cuts that make up a structured whole but what about similar individual cuts and how they affect the outcome? There are various amount of obvious differences in each episode such as the clothing they wear that represent the character they are (Koizumi is always wearing casual clothes, Kyon doesn't really care, Haruhi is always wearing bright and light clothing, etc.), or even the tone of Nagato's voice each episode becomes more monotone after every repeated cycle (this can be best seen if the first Endless Eight is compared to the last Endless Eight). You could even go as far as stretch out the details at the end of each episode where Kyon is wanting to stop Haruhi but doesn't. Endless Eight is not the most popular aspect of the Haruhi franchise and many could even say the most hated, but if someone like you could show an audience what the directors did differently each episode and portray how it adds up to the whole, then I feel the Endless Eight would be regarded more as a directorial success rather than Kyoto Animation screwing around for 8 episodes. Keep up the good work, your stuff handers my balls.

    Idk I feel like this episode is a little biased maybe because this is his first episode I don't fully agree with. His arguments this time around seem more like justifications I mean most critics try and balance out their praise and critique. He talked so much on how the editing was "genius," but it just seems confusing for someone who didn't instantly fall in love with it. He also goes into such great lengths about the feeling of home, but that is biased in so many ways it depends completely if you can relate with the character or what your sense of home is. He does mention that in the first viewing it may not seem much, but I had trouble finding inventive to watch it a third time just to try and understand what the hell you people are talking about.
