I just noticed the similarity between Rei's blood on his hand and Shinji's yogurt in his hand from The End of Evangelion.
*****
Gigguk ftw.
*****
Evangelion. New every time I watch it.
+Paul Staker
A substance of blood.
Seed of life
both are in shinji's own hands.
Siwoo Kim Exactly.
+Paul Staker amogst juxtaposing of the shots, anno makes good use of the hand as a motiff, think of all the shots involved with hands hes used.
I'm pretty sure Gendo's glasses are just reflecting the screen, because it doesn't make a lot of sense for him to have sci-fi glasses monitoring what is already in front of him. Great video though, I always thought Eva had top tier cinematography.
You didn't notice it...
But your brain did.
+ShootingStarNeo oh yea a red letter* media shout out.
+ShootingStarNeo Mr. Plinkett review of the rebuild movies when??
Is that a mother fucking Mr. Plinkett reference?!?!?
PLINKEETTTTTTTTTT where’s my fucking pizza roll?????
The scariest part about Evangelion episode one that makes me instantly interested was the fact that the "robot" has blood comes out of it when its limb was severed. Before that, I always thought Eva is in the line of Gundam but the ugly "robots" drives me away. When I saw the "robots" has blood, it officially hits me that this show has a lot more going on in the future episodes and not just about its character but also its world, the factions and the mystery. Best decision I made when I was 12. I have seen traumatized young man being force to fight, rejection, PTSD and unforgiving upper command but "robots with blood?" Some shit is about to go down and it was worth every second of my childhood.
I'm honestly surprised you left out the scene where we first see the apparition of Rei. It's chilling at first, then becomes even more so after finishing EoE and viewing the series again
+NosferatuTodd I agree. That shot is the ultimate proof, along with other foreshadowing in the first episode, that the series wasn't made up as they went along.
This shot is ripe for interpretation, since its juxtaposed with the flock of birds leaving I took it as it being that Rei was literally there and had to go off into a bunker, but it couldn't be since she was in medical care at the time as we see later, since Rei has already died then it must be viewed as a manifestation of her ghost, or a hallucination on shinji's part i.e. that he thought he saw a girl, but in fact it was only a mirage (the birds) and it was easiest to represent the girl as one of the other characters. But I see how you are interpreting the initial appearance of Rei as cyclic or foreshadowing all that is to come, since you viewed the end of the story just before seeing that early scene again.
The duplicates of shinji in the many screens behind gendo symbolizes, at least to me, that shinji is replaceable to him
Problem is, he isnt. They need a Berserker unit one and for that they need shinji.
In a sense he is later on once we encounter the dummy plug but this is Ep 1. He really is not replaceable. To me that scene symbolizes that every finger is pointing at Shinji as he is the only one on all the screens. As if looking at him from above in a protective HQ room isn't enough
Gendo's smile is one of the most iconic scenes in anime history in my opinion.
Ayanami's smile...
In case someone hasn't pointed it out yet, when you brought up the framing of Shinji between Ritsuko and Misato, I saw some left brain/right brain symbolism with the more logical Ristuko being on the left and more emotional Misato on the right.
Wow, I never caught that detail about gendo's letter being torn up and taped back together.
I'm sure that scene of shinji's blood on his hands is a parallel of the scene from EOE as well.
+Maztuhmind that was very interesting and well thought out to be honest.
me either, I never realized that before
Maztuhmind wrong color
Instead of death on his hands, he has life haha
Misato is love.
Misato is life.
***** I have several waifus.
And Misato is not one of them. Misato would be a cool aunt ya know.
***** Mango ain't got shit on Misaytow.
kuribo04 I used to love Misato, i really did. She was my favourite character. But her actions towards the end of the series were so upsetting and reprehensible that I just started to resent her. I know shes a victim like everyone else but she just disgusts me so damn much...
***** So Asuka, Ryuko and Bulma suck?
killerofallgames Like all the characters, she gets pushed to absolute extremes. Yeah, she really does wrong. But her speech in the middle ;_;
You can do this for every episode. Even the last 2.
X. Numbers pretty much, the story bitch slaps you with proper framing and scene compositions + symbolism at every turn.
+SoopDwagg Yep, and people who don't get this complain about the "limited animation" necessary to accomplish it.
Another interesting touch is that the series was made with a wobbly splice effect that gave it a semi-realistic "actually filmed" feel. Gainax is on record that this was deliberate.
ADV initially tried to remove the "fault" from the US release by pausing each scene for a fraction of a second before each scene change, which looked absurd (the "cure" was far worse than the "fault", as even the film grain stopped moving, let alone the action).
Some scenes from the series that stand out in my memory...
Gendo sitting at his desk with the window frame casting the shadow of a cross over his shoulder (the cross that he bears).
The Evangelions parked on the street in a kneeling position, facing a church.
The shadows of Shinji, Gendo and the gravestone of Yui forming the shadows of a family portrait.
The series is chock full of these sorts of moments.
A lot of people have been questioning my use of the word "cut" in this video to describe shots. As far as I know, the word "cut" is typically used in Japanese animation to refer to an individual piece of the storyboard which an animator would work on in its own little chunk. Shirobako, which is an anime about making anime, uses the word "cut" heavily, and in the glossary of terms that P.A. Works released with the show, the word cut comes up a lot. Here's a bunch of instances of it in the glossary, as translated by SeHNNG:
storyboards are being cut (絵コンテを切ってる ekonte wo kitteru) - a stage in the production process that indicates storyboards are being drawn.
heavy cut (重いカット omoi katto) - this term is used to refer to cuts that require either a lot of work or very skilled craftsmanship. These cuts are said to be high on “calories”. The heaviness of the last cuts in Exodus! is part of the reason Miyamori struggles to find competent and willing key animators in episodes 11-12.
cut envelope (カット袋 katto bukuro) - a thick paper envelope used to carry materials so as to prevent any marring or damage to them. Even though anime production is becoming increasingly digitized, most drawings are still done by hand―therefore, these envelopes are still necessary. The cut’s number, length, supervisor, number of sheets, camera work and any special contents are recorded directly onto the cut envelope.
cutting (カッティング kattingu) - editing work. Refer to “editing” for a more detailed description.
recutting (再カッティング saikattingu) - when the product has to be re-edited. This usually only happens after a large-scale change in content (whether narrative or visual), or if the broadcast format changes.
length (尺 shaku) - this word, shaku, specifically refers to the length of a cut, or section of film, in seconds.
progression sheets (進行表 production sheets) - a single TV anime episode is composed of around 280~340 cuts. The progression sheet is where each cut’s progress is summarized. Management of the progression sheet is vital to the anime’s schedule. Although maintaining an up-to-date sheet is an elementary practice, many newcomers forget to update it and thereby face the ire of the desk.
bara (バラ) - the photographed data of each cut. The checking and possible re-taking of this data is known as the bara-check.
bara-check (バラチェック bara chekku) - the process of checking each individual cut in the scatter, making sure that the photography has been completed as instructed. Checks if any cuts require adjustment or tuning. Since the cuts are viewed individually in this process, this is referred to as a ‘scatter check’ (from the Japanese barabara, ‘scattered’ or ‘disconnected’).
all rush (オールラッシュ ooru rasshu) - the process of lining up each cut (see: rush) in numerical order and checking to see if they flow as a unit. This is meant to verify that there’s a consistency in the scenes and a logical order to the cuts-something that’s hard to judge from individual cuts.
full glossary translated here: altairandvega.net/2015/01/07/shirobako_glossary/
***** Cool. I still associate it with film editing tho, but i guess you really used the word fine here. Still, frames or shots sounds little more natural, at least for me. Gj for explaination
***** TL;DR
***** Sorry for being a pain in ze butt :V Its not unheard of that terminology is different in different languages so that is probably the case here. I know for a fact that western animation uses the terminology that I'm more accustomed to so I'd wager this is a Japanese, or perhaps even eastern Asia, trait.
***** You don't have to over think this, cut is a general term for working with film or tape of some kind, the original storage medium for film, TV or even magnetic tape for audio. Cut refers to when the film or tape had to physically be cut from one source to attach the next section which would be the next shot or edit. So it's essentially interchangeable with shot. And each shot is represented by a storyboard frame usually.
***** Just so you know, when translating katakana and hiragana into romaji, the letter wo translates as 'o' in romaji. While technically the 'w' does exist there in the alphabet, it is struck out when used in romaji regardless. This is because in the word 'wo' the w is silent and is not really pronounced which is a little strange concidering the fact that japanese is otherwise perfectly phonetic. Ah well..
Gendou's hastily scrawled letter doesn't actually have a "Thanks" on it. It actually says "Ikari Gendou", though I see how you could have seen the ドウ at the end and thought it said アリガトウ.
Kelohmello The mistranslation actually came from the subs I was watching. Duly noted, tho.
+Digibro I think it would be a good idea to add a correction (with annotations or such), since this does change the interpretation of the scene.
+Kelohmello Why does Gendou write with Katakana rather than hiragana? I've seen a lot of katakana in anime and I was wondering if anyone knows why its the preferred script.
+legoman7041 In Eva, every character's first name is in Katakana, actually. It's not really the preferred way to name anyone in anime, just this one in particularly chooses to do so, either for stylistic reasons or something deeper that Anno chose not to divulge. Naming japanese characters with Katakana instead of Kanji or Hiragana is in fact pretty atypical.
Lots of creators use katakana for emphazasing certain things.
I loke the one where Rei is there but when Shinji looks she isnt. It felt very eerie.
It's even more striking on repeat views.
Can someone explain that shot?
PERsecond hackz her appearing in that shot and again in eoe are meant to symbolize the bookends of the show.
+PERsecond hackz I interpret the Rei shots as Shinji being having distant hope for acceptance and happiness. The first shot reinforces the small hope Shinji has that his father will accept him when he arrives at NERV. She's only there for a glimpse because of the small amount of fleeting hope that Shinji is working with. This scene is reflected in EoE because it has shown that Shinji is still feeling this way. Even through all he's been through, he's still far from happiness and only sees it briefly. (I think that's why he chokes Asuka initially, because he's largely unchanged.) Working theory, but that's how I see it.
+Romano Coombs
My mother language isnt english, so Im not sure what exactly you meant. Did I get it right that you mean that Anno made the last 2 episodes, the series-ending, exactly the way he wanted to do it?
Nevermind, I just got it^^ Your "/" irritated me.
Its really getting on my nerves how everyones saying he just made up the last 2 episodes, because he didnt have money. I personally loved the last 2. And back then I wasnt even aware of the financial problems they had.
Finally someone is talking about what Evangelion does well, the direction, not another video talking about Psychology.
Have you seen Wings of Honneamise, Anno did the art direction for that and it could do with a break down.
The word you are looking for is memorable
I am pretty sure Evangelion will always be my favorite anime. I have been searching for years, and have yet to find anything that I can consider to be comparable.
+adastras I have the same feeling. Since 2007, when I first watch the anime. The only anime for me that's like... 60% good as evangelion is Serial Experiments Lain and GitS. Nothing beats EVA, man...
'Neon Genesis Evangelion' and 'Trust & Betrayal' (Kenshin OVA Dir. Cut) are tied for my #1. I honestly can't decide which I enjoy more.
After that? Everything else pales.
Sean Hurley do i have to watch the actual rurouni kenshin show to appropriate the ova? i watched the show when i was younger but it's been so long, i think i might have to watch it again.
Nope! Trust & Betrayal is all about his backstory. The Anime happens after, so you don't need to have seen it.
That said, the anime's great, so rewatch it anyway. ;D
if i want to watch evangelion were should i start i have seen series or seasons i think like evangelion 3.0 something like that but im not sure where to start please hel
Evangelion in my experience really truly does the best sense of urgency and tension i've seen in anime. Possibly every encounter had me stressed even though i know of course they would win, there were still more episodes.
There are no monitors in gendous glasses, why would you think that? It's obviously a reflection of the big view screen that they're all looking at.
+doltBmB You're probably right, BUT do note that in rebuild of evangelion gendo has wierd, obviously computer-y glasses of some sort, which kind of makes you wonder if they were supposed to be more than just glasses all along, especially with scenes like that one and how they have an unusual orange tint
Parker Krakowiak 3.0 is just kinda crazy. We see lots of things reflected in his regular glasses before that. It's just a different way to layout the scene.
it's also important imo that Shinji's view of blood on his hands obscures the person who he's supposed to protect, showing that his responsible nature towards others is a more self centered than altruistic.
also the cut I like the most is actually a fan edit; someone had the whole series of jump cuts of the Eva setting itself up, it activates, steps forward, trips, cut to Seinfeld riff on ending credits
***** My person favorite cut is when Ritsuko and Misato are standing in the elevator with Shinji while talking. It really gives an out look on their different perspectives while giving the audience information as to what Shinji is going to do after piloting the Eva.
I also really like Misato driving the car really bad because, in I way, I feel it symbolizes her character, and the characters of all of Evangelion in a pretty decent metaphor. She's the one sent to go pick him up, which means she has Nerv's confidence in getting him back safely despite her bad driving. Not only this, but despite her driving being erratic and rough, she avoids the destruction caused by the angel and gets Shinji to safety. This symbolizes that Misato has a lot of flaws and may not always get things done gracefully, but she comes through when it is needed and people depend on her. I honestly thought that was done so subtly and great that I rewatch that every now and again just to marvel at some of the cinematography.
Thanks for a cool breakdown Digi! Are you planning on doing some of the other episodes' cuts as well? *crosses fingers* I hope so!
One of my favorite shots is when one of the pieces of metal bounces off of the Eva's hand and smashes in half in front of Ghendo, he gives such a smug look that I love. He knows why it happened, and although we don't know it quite yet, it's a huge foreshadow for the series
N2 mines are some kind of nuclear weapons so they emit a powerful EMP upon detonation. That's why the monitors reflected in Gendo's glasses are white noising, it's because the N2's EMP destroyed the cameras and/or temporarily scrambled the signal
NGE is my all time favorite anime series and you always do a great job analyzing the various different things that make an anime great. So it's really cool to see you making a video dedicated to analyzing one of the things that make eva so great.
Now this is a top ten list I can get behind. I love these shot dissections and reading in to the deeper meaning behind how and why these shots are composed the way they are. Keep 'em coming. :D
A work this obsessively intricate can only be the opus of a mad genius. I'm secretly hoping Arcane will descend into this level of detailed insanity.
I think you mean 'compositions' or 'shots' rather than 'cuts'. Cuts are edits, jumps from one point of view to another.
In his defense, "Killer compositions" doesn't really roll of the tongue
***** Well I don't know much about editing, but Shirobako referred to scenes as 'cuts' so...
Rahkshi Lord I would have to see the quote to evaluate that but it might have been mistranslated. I'm a film student currently working on a feature film so Id like to think I have an idea of what I'm talking about.
***** you almost sounded like an ass there, just almost
***** It's an animation thing rather than a film thing. "Animation cuts" as I understand them.
I just want to expound on shot #9 for a bit, in that it mirrors the famous "so fucked up" shot from The End of Evangelion. There is a purpose to this, which is kind of obvious but still amazes me with it's simplicity and depth.
In GoatJesus' EoE analysis he talks about how the themes of sex and death are physical ways of representing emotional connection and disconnection. To expound on this, consider what the liquid forms of sex and death are, cum and blood. Blood on his hand for Rei, cum on his hand for Asuka. This could very well represent the ways in which the two girls internally feel about their relationship to Shinji.
Neon Genesis Evangelion fucking rocks and it's the little things like this that make me love it all the more.
so much enthusiasm in your voice. made me feel so connected to what you were saying. also, great video. i haven't seen eva in years and seeing this was pretty nostalgic. so thanks
Superb analysis. I greatly enjoy your detailed deconstructions of an anime (like your psycho pass 1 vs 2 videos). I look forward to see more of these.
Awesome video as always Digi
Happy Early Father's day. And get in the robot.
Personally, I loved the part when the elevator door opens, and Ritsuko is revealed behind that door at EXACTLY the same location as the image of Misato's reflection had been visible in.
This has to be one of the best videos I've seen from you and I would love you to do more for the series, the cinematography in this show is one of the best I've seen and rarely talked about, more impressive having in mind the budget. Also I love that you are one of the few that I've seen recognizing the excelent use of symbolism regarding the characters. Great job!
Cool video. Can't wait to see more!
Awesome analysis man.
This is a brilliant analysis of a classic anime. Well done.
Was so long ago since I watched Evangelion. Didn't even even pay attention to this kind of stuff back then. Stuff like this is great, keep it up man.
You have persuaded me to watch the show, thank you.
THIS IS AWESOME
Superb análisis!
This video really struck me. I never really looked at eva in the technical sense. I'm no screen writer after all. I look forward to the other episodes for more insight on these cuts!
I absolutely adore your analysis, have a great day ^^
Yes, more eva please. I cannot get enough of you talking about evangelion.
Nice one Diji! Kinda pulled a leaf out of GJ's book with spectacular results. Love the video and breakdown of the scenes. I look forward to more!
Love your site man. Cool videos
Thanks digi. I like this vid and hope to see more
lol Hi bro
You have a really keen eye! I actually just started watching this and have managed to avoid major spoilers for 9 YEARS up to this very point, hehe. I just finished episode 6 and my two favorite shots in all of them have been the angel exploding into a cross, and Rei's smile at the end of 6.
I remember seeing the note, but I never stopped to really take notice of it's features and the meaning behind them. It might as well have been a clean sheet of paper to me. I can't believe how much consideration was put into the show's minute details, and now I hope to do the same in my own stories.
Very enlightening video :)
If you are spoiled at this point it's your fault, it's 2015. The anime has been out for years.
I got pretty much all these messages when watching & re-watching this episode before, though I don't usually consciously think about 'why' those shots effect me during.
This was a great understandable breakdown of how those shots are effective.
I look at films and tv very analytically and I was literally drooling over how brilliant the direction of this episode was. One of the best episodes of anime ever, and possibly the best start to a series ever
The shot as the train comes out inside the Geofront always gives me chills.
Yay! I've been hoping for more Eva from you.
You've inspired me to try and rewatch this series ^o^
I think this is one of the best videos you've ever done. Right after it was finished I watched the episode and enjoyed/appreciated it more than I ever had before.
Also irrelevant but when I read the title my first thought was that this was going to be a parody video about your favourite character's haircuts, although that may have been what you were going for.
This channel is awsome.
Wow that was pretty great
My favorite bit from the show was in episode two where Shinji first gets into the eva and gets his ass kicked by the angel at first. After damage to the head of the eva and a reaction shot from Misato, it cuts straight to a quiet shot of Shinji waking up in a hospital bed. This was mostly memorable just cause of how jarring the transition was. Suddenly the scene was very quiet, calmer, and a lot brighter.
genial el video
me gusto mucho, gracias por subirlo, esta excelente
espero con ansias ver mas
:3
every shot is iconic
This is one of the best analysis videos of any movie/series I've seen yet. Great work! New suscriber here and I'm definitely looking forward to your other videos. Thanks mate
You are way into it.
Great video. You can notice in the way you talk that you love doing this.
One of my favourite shows. One of my favourite things ever.
Will you continue with these (an End of Eva video in this style would be awesome).
Thanks for giving the original Evangelion time to shine! Ep 23 I believe the Kaworu, has some of my favorite shorts. There is a ton of symmetrical shots and strong diagonal lines.
Also the episode where shinji is stuck in the Sea of Dirac (?) and his mother's spirit visits him. I love how the visual of his mother looks nothing like her, so it can be assumed that what we see is just a visual representation of the love shinji feels surrounding him.
earned my sub bro
Im looking forward to more parts of this.
Wow great video, but I'd say one of the most important shots in the episode/the series is the quick cut to Rei from outside the phone booth. It's super overshadowing and really brings the whole show/movie together for me.
I saw that thumbnail and read the video title as "10 Killer Cuties in Evangelion"
Holy fuck Digi, the letter at #5 made me realize that something similar happens during EoE, in that scene of the creepy dolls where shinji kicks and destroys the pyramid sand that represents Nerv and then rebuilds it, Hideaki is a freakin genius
I really like the shot of the car getting knocked over from the explosion. It reminds me of those old military videos of bomb tests in New Mexico. How the explosion seems to push everything out of its way.
I think seeing the geofront was one of my favorite scenes of episode one. Basically like an underground city for itself and Neev headquarters
Digobro, I'm always watching your videos, because I think anime is a very important art medium that requires analysis, and you always deliver on that.
I just finished watching Evangelion for the first time.
It's the richest anime when it comes to symbolism, thematics, cinematography, design, narrative and pacing...
When Shinji gets stuck in the Sea of Dirac and starts having a discussion with himself, I had to pause it, and check what the Sea of Dirac looked like again, and...It was a shadow. A _literal_ shadow, representing the Jungian archetype of "shadow". At that moment, I had no doubt that Hideki was a genius, and that he was completely invested in his characters and the story he was trying to tell.
And after finishing Evangelion, the first thing I did was open your "Evangelion Analysis" playlist. In fact, your videos had been a huge motivation for me to watch NGE - I _really_ wanted to see them, but I didn't want to spoil myself on anything.
Mainly, what I want to say is that I'm happy people like you exist. And I want to thank you for making these videos! I'm going to have a blast watching all of them, just like I do when I watch your other videos.
its back yeeeeaaaahhhhhh!!
My favorite scene is the one with Gendo looking down at Shinji since the symbolism is heavy (it shows how far away Gendo and Shinji are from each other through a classic metaphor) and the scene explains Shinji's role and Gendou's intention right from the start. I facepalmed when I realized it after watching the entire series since I could compare Gendo to the Devil looking down at Shinji who "is" the Messiah. This is my interpretation of the scene and probably far fetched, but hey - it works for me. :3
Thank you for another great video of my favorite anime of all time!
4:02 Perhaps my Japanese is failing me, but it seems that that smaller text is just Gendou's name, if there's a "thanks" on there then I can't see it.
Huh, odd. The thanks was in the subtitles but maybe a mistranslation?
***** Probably, I'm almost entirely positive that it says "碇 ゲンドウ" (Ikari Gendou). It can be pretty difficult to read handwritten Japanese though.
Yeah, the large kanji and hiragana reads "koi" (come), while the smaller kanji and katakana says (presumably Ikari, I can't read that one), Gendou (in katakana).
Reviewing it like a Boss~
I never noticed the sheer amount of information subtle conveyed in this anime's imagery.
4:23. Oh shit, never thought of that.
Pretty good.
Man not even an honorable mention for when Misato protecting Shinji from the explosion?
2:10 Shinji breaking the laws of physics.
I _hate_ scifi anime because it's usually so damn dull, it hurts. But I will give Evangelion respect for being well made. The guy's a natural at composition, perspective, and camera shots in animation.
I love what the Japanese do with video games, by the way. They've developed a beautiful and under appreciated art in making 3D character models and animation, and world building in an appealing way. And it feels more open and alive than CG Animation.
Very cool
God analysis. The things you're pointing out make a lot of sense
The way he pronounced cicadas is blowing my mind
This. CZcams needs more intelligente audio visual content as this video.
I think one of the most intriguing cuts is the one at the very beginning of your video, when Shinji sees a phantom image of Rei right after he thinks to himself - "I need to find shelter". As if Shinji's "shelter" - where he will find peace of mind - is going to be his care and compassion for Rei.
Importantly can I have another season of it. And why no one wants continue the amazing work.
Just this week I was re-watching it. There is plenty of cuts that sum up the feeling of the scenes. Like in episode 2 when Shinji runs into Gendo at the elevator and it a ground perspective in between the door frame but we don't see him cross that line. They have clear divide between them. And right after this we get Gendo saying Shinji will live alone. This cut gets reincorporated when Shinji moves in with Misato.
random fact. Those Tanks are Japanese Type 74 ones
It is so strange to be reminded of these subtle moments of brilliance, when compared to how heavy handed the symbolism becomes in later episodes - End of Evangelion in particular.
I don't know that it's particularly meaningful or conveys very much, but i do like the giant hand in the background of the elevator ride. It simply looks cool.
The fact they did a great job with the cinematography, in spite of the issues they had trying to use and balance the budget, even in the very first couple of episodes, definitely helps to secure NGE's status as a great piece of visual media for me.
I have to say the elevator Scene when Ritsuko is relvealed via the reflection of misato parting as the doors seperate is one of my favourites, along with the continued conversation as they ride the elevator together.
The Confidence of Ritusko infected by Gendo (Venerally if nothing else) and the Wavering of Misato begins here which leads to the conversation of convincing Shinji, With Misato coming over ot Ritsukos side of the argument.
The entire scene rolls to an inevitiable pressure cooker from this moment the devil and angel on Shinjis shoulder, the ID and EGO. The characters of Ritsuko and Misato are a reflection throughout the series of 2 competing parts of the brain, Misatos Longing for connection and romance and even her own revulsion of herself all purely Reactive and passionate, While Rituskos own logical path and needs driving her to resolve 'Mother' and Gendo before attempting her destruction of the Magi but missing out the Thing that stops her. Mothers own Desire, For Gendo his infection has spread to far to be stopped the third impact is inevitible. A wonderful COincixcence since the whoel thing is an effective flashback of Shinji reconfiguring his trauma and casting his Father exactly as he Sees him, an Insideous Manipulative Madman driven by hes own selfish Needs.
Discuss ;P
Top 10... That's basically the whole episode is killer masterpiece.
You actually show one of my favourite short scenes in this near the end where Shinji is in EVA-01 being synced into it.
Its the random flashes of colour but it never really feels majestic or surreal like many shows and movies that usually use lost of colour in a scene, the way Shinji is positioned in the frame almost shows his pod sinking into a mass of colour.
It adds an incredibly unnerving feel to EVA-01 and solidifies that whatever this thing is, its not just another giant robot.
Damn u really good digi. Woulda never understood what that taped up letter really represented.
I actually _really_ like the idea that Gendo's glasses have monitors in them; would explain why he seems so calm and still, never really looking at a monitor for information.
Would also explain why he even wears the glasses in the first place; as they are tinted and do not appear to be prescription.
My favorite scene in the entire series is the underwater fight between asuka, and the angel.
In an earlier episode you can hear a professor in the background explaining that the 2nd impact melted the ice caps.
So that's the reason the city is underwater, I thought it was so cool that there was so much attention to detail and planning. And it calls back to the first episode with the angel swimming through the ocean ruins of a previous city.
Oh god, now i wanna watch eva again
Such a damn piece of art... and such a damn clusterfuck lol.
Quite a good video. If this show is to receive endless hyperbolic praise, it may as well receive some of it from its direction, and no its 'psychology', like it's often heavily praised for.
gendou's smile doesnt prove that humanity has a chance, it proves to him that he can progress further into the human instrumentality project, which was his only concern from the very start.
