  • As persecution raged in Rome, Mark wrote his gospel to remind suffering Christians of the Messiah who had come into the world to redeem them from destruction. In this sermon, R.C. Sproul begins his exposition of Mark by helping us to see this book through the eyes of its first readers.

I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. This passage from the Gospel of St. Mark is read every 3 years on The Second Sunday of Advent, which is from December 4-11. This passage, along with Mark 13:24-37, are the only two passages from Mark that is read during the Advent/Christmas Season. We don't see Mark again until January 7-13, which is The Baptism of Our Lord.

There’s no way John the Baptist could be dipping people in water as a sign of Jesus death and resurrection because Jesus hadn’t gone to the cross yet.
And John certainly had no idea that was going to happen.

@@rockycomet4587 haha. Yeah. They weren’t dipping people in water like the Baptist do today. They were doing what is called procelyte Baptism.
It’s something they did at that time. The apostles continue to do it after Jesus but then they quit.
What we do today by dipping people and water is not what they were doing.
