  • The Silver Wilkinson is a very well known pattern and really comes into its own for grilse and fresh salmon, usually the first fly on my cast when going down a pool in June/July.
This one kind of goes against the grain a little as far as Irish shrimp flies go as it uses hen hackles rather than stiffer cock hackles, a couple of years ago i started using hen hackles on some of the tube flies that i was tying as i wanted a softer more webby fibre for a bit more movement, the tubes worked quite well with hen hackles so i since progresse to using hen on some of my shrimp patterns on doubles, over the next few years i caught enough fish to realise that they didnt really mind wether it was a soft webby hen hackle or the stiffer hackle from the cock bird.
I hope your enjoying my videos and if theres any patterns I can help with jus tfire away in the comments section and i'll see what i can do.
As always, i really would appreciate it if you could hit the subscribe button, its a great way to keep up to date with my latest videos

Great fly! I am wondering why you cut the fibers off of the jungle cock feathers. Is it just because they are fragile? Just curious. All the best and thanks for sharing. Sean

There's 2 reasons really, the first is that with the small junglrcock feathers sometimes when you just pull the fibers off it can break the stalks as there so fine and then you don't have enough left to double over and lock in and secondly it helps keep all the fluff away from the eye which can sometimes get trapped between wraps of threat at the head becoming unsightly and awkward to trim off, hope this helps and thanks for the question

Hi Michael, what brand and type of cape are you using for hen hackles? They look fantastic.
