Kept my attention the entire time, and that’s what a greater teacher does: educates while keeping his/ her students engaged. Not realizing one is learning, because one is having fun. Just brilliant. • @YaDingus
      @YaDingus Před 4 lety +15

      140 - 150 bpm is where a lot people cap at because your technique needs to change around then. Your hip flexors need to act as suspenders for your legs rather than being a source of power. Then all your power and control should come from foot, ankle, and calf. Basically, at faster speeds (140+), your quads and knees need should be fixed at one position rather than moving up and down. 5:37 is a perfect example.

      @@YaDingus I see this a lot on the internet that if someone can't play fast it's because they are using full leg motion -- that's definitely not the only reason (I'm sure everyone who is trying to figure out how to play faster is more than aware of leg vs ankle). For me - I using ankle technique 100% (i use leg only for extremely slow stuff like 100bpm, anything moderate or faster -- only ankle) and my max is still at around 160-170 bpm (i can do bursts at 200 though). I don't think it's leg vs ankle - a lot of people play with full leg at over 200 bpm (for example watch a studio video of Jay Weinberg playing Unsainted with double bass over the verses czcams.com/video/27iYNJ_huP0/video.html, that's 205 bpm or smth -- full leg motion). I personally sort of solved this for myself by figuring out how to play doubles (heel-toe), so here's an example of me playing a 190bpm song with double strokes - czcams.com/video/sd_rgubqV0g/video.html

    • @YaDingus
      @YaDingus Před 3 lety

      @@antondubkov You're right, there are multiple ways to achieve higher bpm double bass. Once I reach about 140 bpm I began to switch to more ankle movement but I'm still using some higher leg motion for balance and control. It's the same technique Marthyn Jovanovic. The, of course, around 190 I'm all ankle. I notice you keep your pedals pretty close to the thrown which is what I use to do, but now I keep them quite further away which is WAY more comfortable for higher BPMs. Awesome performance, by the way! Does a different drive shaft make a difference? I was thinking about converting my Speed Cobras to direct drive.

    Hey Eugene, Great video, thanks for those advices. I was wondering, I'm not yet at the speed of 170. I'm for now confortable at 140, and sometimes I can reach 160. I was wondering what technique should I use at those speed. I mean, when are you switching to the swivel technique ? I play mostly heel up or flat foot. Do you think It's good to practice heel up until 170 and then switch to Swivel ? I hope I have been clear enough haha. Last question, you talked about endurance, but what about control ? I mean, I'm able to go at 160, for like 1 or 2 minutes, but it's impossible for me to play a song At 160 bpm with stuff like syncopation on the feet or you know, particular kinda jent beats. any hint ?

    I consider that video not only enjoyable to watch, but also the best video about Double Bass on yt. I'm playing now almost 3 years, first two on roland drums, never really practiced speed of double bass as a pure "separate" exercise, it was coming along with practise for songs that I wanted to play ( spend a hell of a time learning painkiller intro for example). I changed electronic set for acustic drums at the end of august this year. On acustic drum you've got to punch harder than on the trigered pad, therefore I didn't had the stamina for fast playing. I starded from 150 bpm (16th notes). At that speed I was able to maintain stable 30 min double bass without interruption. I played at that speed for 2 weeks everyday, 30 min long (preceded by 15 min warmup with various double bass beats) and jumped for 160 bpm. And then there is the list:
    160 bpm - one week
    165 bpm - one week
    170 bpm - two weeks
    175 bpm - one week
    180 bpm - I'm starting second week now
    I'm playing for 30 minutes everyday, and I don't jump 5 bpm faster until I don't feel quite relaxed at certain speed. I'm going for 210 bpm for now, thanks Eugene you've showed the right way, just sit and play :D Ohh and I've got crappy pedal worth about 80 $

A month ago I couldn't do 170 bpm for 10 minutes, now I can do 190 for 10 minutes and 180 for 30 minutes. Now when I practise I start daily with 150 bpm 10 minutes, 160 bpm 10 minutes, 170 bpm 20 minutes and then 180 30 minutes. After that today I did 3x1 minute 190 bpm (rested for a while in-between) and then could do 10 min 190 bpm for the first time. What did I learn? It Doesn't Matter if you don't see "visible" progress every day - what you Can see is that you'll be able to play cleaner and "easier" and with less tenseness and louder with the familiar tempos. At first, though, I just spent hours and hours watching my feet (either right of left, playing with one foot at a time) and tried to make it look and feel and sound sensible when first learning the heel-toe single technique.
    I hope this helps someone. This video is all True. Thank you!

    Damn, this is pretty amazing! the first double bass tutorial that actually covered most things. But most importantly, focused on the training part! that bpm * 30mins! that is so true. you need to get your muscles and legs used to playing! in the past i've just tried to play really fast and only managed for short periods. I'll get right on this! thanks for the awesome tips!

    excellent advice throughout this whole video.
    i played/practiced for 2 years before i was able to hold 16th notes at 120bpm for more than 5 minutes. so for those that think its easy...its not. but its worth it if you stick with it.
    and hes 100% right. doing it correctly at slower tempos is much more productive than doing it wrong at faster tempos..you wont learn anything like that.

      I'vr been playing for a bit less than a year and made it up to like 110 bpm for endurance, but I can get up to 135 sometimes. What do you think is more important though? Practicing double bass techniques, or practicing rudiments. I want to play prog rock/metal, what would be best to practice to play this genre?

      Eugene Ryabchenko Yeah, i'm still learning how to use them well, i've tried adjusting springs but the left one is always a bit harder to use than the right pedal. Also i can only do a 180 bpm pattern for a short time and thats with my feet flat, cant do it with my heels up for some reason :/ Need more muscle im weak and out of shape atm
