If you were brought up by a controlling parent, you will know that they don't understand conversations. The only thing they understand is cutting them off from your life, which starts with you being 100% independent.

    • @gkennedy2998
      @gkennedy2998 Před 2 lety +15

Very true. A Controlling parent, or a narcissistic parent, can't be reasoned with. The only way to manage that parent is to cut them off. Of course, that parent will trash-talk you to family and friends, but it's the only way. Dave's advice is for normal parents who can understand that they are overstepping boundaries. That's not universally true.

No contact is so unfortunate. I do not get why parents would choose to live in that state rather than simply humble themselves and listen to their adult children's needs which usually are NOT difficult or unreasonable, just healthy boundaries. But many parents just won't let go of their parenting role perhaps because it's the only thing they've had to value themselves by. So frustrating for the younger generations and heartbreaking for the older. Im trying to remember that our parents didn't have access to the internet therapy and advice we do now and change becomes increasingly more difficult as the years go by. I'm 5 years into negotiations with my parents. They don't want to or see any need to change the relationship we have which is a parent and child relationship. I'm 44, married, kids, work, and have been financially independent for 20+ years and they still don't want to let go. I finally just told them I'm taking a break for a few months because it's exhausting trying to convince people that their need to continue in the dominate role is killing our relationship. They just think I'm the one being difficult and "rebellious". My mother even told me she was going to "rise up and battle against the demons that have come between us!" At 74 years old, its like....really, mom? Really? Your gonna go into battle for my soul when all I asked you to do was ask me before scheduling her and my dad for a 7-10 day visit with us to make sure it was within my schedule to do so and to just not share intimate things I used to share with her like when I was struggling a lot after a complication from a major surgery and she decided it would be a good idea to write in the "family Christmas letter" about how I had had surgery, got injured, lost my job and was unable to now work. Or better when I invited her to attend the birth of our daughter and she took photographs without asking me, made a photo album, and shared it with my dad, her entire church, her neighbors, etc. And it had full on graphic shots showing my exposed parts without even a sticker covering them. Found out 5 months after the fact. I wish with all my might that they would just show a morsel of self-reflection or empathy for how it would make me feel. I just always get the "oh well, you're just too sensitive" or "but it's just family and close friends". I once had the audacity to ask my mom if she was going to write about my father's prostate surgery in the Christmas newsletter as well, she bout lost her mind! She was so angry at me for even suggesting that, to me it's exactly the same thing shes doing to me but I figured it's better because at least it would be sharing something about their lives and not about mine. Now, for the past 2 years, I tell her nothing and she non stop complains about it but I'm like.....I want to be able to share things with you but ONLY with you and not everyone else in her world. She just can't help it though I guess. Maybe she needs to attention? Maybe she just needs to be needed so she makes sure to have the scoop on everyone. I really don't know but I'm tired....tired of trying to sort out other people's intentions and emotions. Like, I have all my own junk to deal with. I really don't have a solution for myself yet but I do hope that we can find some sort of way to have a relationship before they both die.

What’s also very difficult, especially in ethnic families, is that not only are there helicopter parents but there are a lot of helicopter aunts and uncles. People who see you as their children and still treat you like it when you’re an adult with your own family. They don’t care. And they push boundaries and it really does affect the relationship negatively. It’s so hard.

It's because ethnics are collectivists while whites are individualists.
Imo, I think it's a mistake for ethnic people trying to make in the first world to recreate their homeland through their kids.
In fact, I think that people whom desire success in the first world shouldn't even think about wanting to start a family.

Absolutely, I also want to throw the mix of the bullshit caste system that Asian families have that I hate: the older you are the more respect you deserve, which translates to, if you're an elder you can say whatever the fuck you want and we the "younings" just gotta accept it, but the moment you speak out against it or throw a quick snappy response that matches theirs snarky remark, all of a sudden you're the disrespectful piece of shit that needs to learn manners. I currently live with my grandmother and understand that there are rules that I should follow because I'm under her roof, I'm not arguing against it. What I don't think it entitles is, she's able to crack open the door to peek inside to see what I'm up to(I'm 23) and when I catch her she either pretends to come In to use my restroom or she quickly closes the door. When I come out late at night to eat because I'm hungry, it's not just because I get hungry but she assumes I'm on drugs. Can a young adult get hungry without being asked if I'm on drugs? I also asked her why my relatives always make the comment that I'm skinny. All my father's children have been skinny, genetics play a favor and circumstance, I survived years off of TV dinners, top ramen, and occasional home cooked meals from my mother(who doesn't like cooking), but you know what my grandmothers response was? "It's because they wanna make sure you're not smoking crack, skinny people usually smoke crack" hollllllyyyyy fuckkk mannnm!

Here’s your choice: You can make your children competent and courageous, or you can make them safe.
But you can’t make them safe, because life isn’t safe.
So, if you sacrifice their courage and competence on the altar of safety, then you disarm them completely.

I live in the UK and in 1992 I was made to leave school at 16 and take a job in a factory. Over half of my wage was taken to pay my keep for living at home. I bought my own car and paid for my own driving lessons. I eventually got to go to university in my 30s, when I could afford to pay for it myself. My parents never paid for any of this stuff for me, I never got pocket money and have worked for everything that I have.
Kids these days are too pampered and some parents are still paying their kids' way in to their 20s and 30s.
It's damned wrong that these people still sponge off their parents.

Most adults are incapable of seeing younger people as individuals. They really are. Children and young adults are treated as eternal pets whose only purpose is to please their elders.
Whenever children voice their desire to grow up, they're called ungrateful/ ignorant because " muh bills and deadlines".
Whenever kids have their own subculture, adults try to criminalise it.
Adults, especially men, do everything in their power to smother the youth into doing their selfish bidding.
Then, they turn around call the young "dumb/weak/lazy".
I'm starting to think adolescence was invented because parents were afraid of being left behind. Anyone whom knows history knows that teenagers don't exist. There's only children and adults. Adolescence is the artificial extension of childhood. Now, adolescence is being extended to the thirties and forties.
It's making a much weaker society.

Oh, boy can I ever relate to this! My parents were never the "helicopter" parents. My mother in law is a different story. My husband and I are both sixty years old. When his mother (who lives out of state) came to visit us for a two week vacaton, she "mothered" us to death in our own home. She treated both of us as if we were incompetent children. She gave her negative judgements and unsolicted opinions about every single one of our life choices. She literally scolded us and ordered us around in our own home. It was so infuriating. The "leave and cleave" commandment for marriage should be taken as a dead serious thing. It exists for a good reason. To protect marriages. Mainly from the interference of parents (and In-laws). Parents (on both sides) need to "release" their adult children to their spouses and take a step back. They need to display respect and trust that their grown children have become capable independent adults that are entitled to make their own life decisions.
