  • Motability is a UK wide scheme that enables disabled people to exchange part of certain entitlements / benefits for a car, WAV (wheelchair accessible vehicle), scooter or power chair.
In this video I speak about the car and WAV options of the scheme, how it works, who is entitled to use Motability and our experiences of it.
I don't have any affiliation with Motability and have not received anything from them in return for this video. The opinions are my own.

When i looked at a possible Motability car at age 75 i was told i was too old! and as i can look after myself (although i live alone) i dont as yet require a daily help for my shopping and ablutions and can just about manage 50yds with a walking stick, i have paid to have handrails fitted at my front and side doors and rented a stairlift(cannot go up or down due to requiring new knees ,3yrs waiting!)
My basic state pension is supplemented by an additional small private pension so cannot claim any additional supplementory benefits, and our recent state pension increase altered my tax code so i only got about half of that!! thank you Mr Hunt, NOT!

Why isn't there a motability element to Attendance Allowance? I'm over 75 and on the higher rate of Attendance Allowance, but I can't get a car on the motability scheme. Seems very unfair. So basically, if you are over 75 and not in receipt of the 4 benefits mentioned, you are unable to get a car through the scheme.

Am abit concerned - there's several people who am sure don't have the correct social security criterion nor any relatives that would qualify, yet are getting cars from Motability scheme suppliers (these people have the same or less of a condition(s) than myself). Motability when I tried to speak to them to try getting to the bottom of this, did not even want to 'give me the time of day' and am reaching figurative roadblocks in being able to find out how they're being successful in their claims and whether there is another scheme in place for those who are not directly applicable through the Mobility components of Social Security. Any ideas as to what might be going on here, as am all out of ideas and desperately want to continue my independence as an autistic adult - thanks

March 2024 - if you have just under a year left ask the garage or motability anyway, because of all the delays they are being flexible right now, the man at the car showroom told me at the end of January. I was a bit annoyed as that meant I could've put in for the car 10 months ago. Of course don't take my words as gospel as everything changes in a day at times. But again worth asking.

Rather big waffle re the WAVS! Your first port of call should always be the Motability website. Can’t just go to any supplier as they are located all over the country. My supplier is over 600 miles from my house or over 20 hours return journey. They have visited me on a few occasions. A Motability roadshow is the best way to try out a range of WAVS under one roof and you get the opportunity to speak to the converters. I spent a whole year doing research before getting my current WAV and am in the process of changing it as the lease runs out in several months.

If you own your own car and have to have a driving aid fitted or a conversion to suit your disability. If you have a Blue Badge you don't have to pay VAT on the cost.

Basically you keep on paying without owning the car you pay most of your PIP benefits towards something you'll never owned ever

FYI - It's not most of your Pip.
My friend is on it and it's only your motability. You still get your regular component, plus for some cars it's not the full amount of motability, then minus:
      Insurance
      NO CONGESTION CHARGE
      Breakdown cover
      Tax
      MOT
      REGISTERING FEES
Free parking with disabled badge! Most places 3 hours a time. Gold dust in London.
All you pay is petrol. Result!
You still get more than regular benefits, even with the monthly payout to motability, so what you on about. It's Government money, you never worked for it.
That's like a mini Pandoras box and you're still complaining because you are not entitled to it.
Doesn't compare to HP at all. And you CAN own it at the end. Do your research.

Motability need to improve the range of EVs available and seriously reduce the amount they charge for them! It will be cheaper to lease hire them from other companies and with EVs maintenance isn't an issue as there are far fewer parts to fail. Another advantage is the ability to charge at home and they cost far less to run than ICE vehicles and hold their value as it is now known that batteries are out lasting the car itself ! So Motability come on or you are going to lose out !

Every other person in Northern Ireland has a mobility car, it's the most abused scheme ever. I know a17yr old girl who has a new Mercedes which is supposed to be for her sister (who never uses it because the family have other cars). The sister is not disabled and although she has a dodgy hip, she has no mobility issues bad enough to stop her playing football and riding horses!
Apart from wheelchair accessible vehicles, they should only offer something like a Dacia Sandero or similar budget car, not luxury cars. Also, why hand back perfectly good cars after three years? Kia offer a seven year warranty and more and more manufacturers now offer five years, so let them keep the cars for the full warranty period. It's an absolute abuse of taxpayer's money.

I agree. Know of 2 people who have motability no problem getting around by any of them. Walking around Alton Towers and Bluewater no problem. Swimming and jumping into pool no problem. Was in a dealer and motability customer came in - again no problem walking around showroom for 45 minutes. Only interested if car had apple car play and Bluetooth and was quite happy to look at top of range model.

I think this day and age and because of the Greedy and jealous people the scheme has now become pretty crap in terms of availability all because of public moaning and groaning meaning disabled people shouldn't have nice cars.

Brilliant thing Motobility, but the choice cars of just now is atrocious. All I could get was a small car that I struggle to get in and out of.
